or the greatest tv game show

The #FIDMMuseum in L.A. had a great exhibit featuring designs from period & contemporary TV shows on last summer. They displayed costumes from some of the greatest shows during ~peak tv~ and gave insight into the costume designers vision. Being so close to outfits faves have worn is seriously mind blowing - check out the FIDM’s website for current exhibits or jut stop by the gift shop for dope AF souvenirs!

tell us about holster when he played for the schooners!

oh my god. thank you. i will literally talk about this anytime, anywhere.

his nickname is holt and sometimes holtzy and he’s actually SO RIDICULOUS. people don’t really know what to think about him because in postgame interviews he’s grumpy and pretty serious and like, obviously tired with 0% patience to talk to reporters who ask him the same question over and over and over again

the schooners have an AMAZING social media presence - think the canadiens youtube videos and the snapchat of the detriot redwings. people get to know the players incredibly well, and holster goes from this grumpy rookie to this lovable dork who DESTROYS at movie trivia and is always singing in the background of snapchats from practice. they mic him up during a game and it’s pretty much him singing ‘under pressure’ and quoting TV shows.

there’s a youtube video of him that’s called “every time birkholtz looks into the camera like he’s on the office” and it’s a beautifully edited compilation of game footage and sure enough he does the jim face when he’s sitting in the penalty box, before face offs, when he’s on the bench, literally ALL THE TIME. no one knows how he always manages to track the camera

tumblr loves him. i don’t make the rules ok. he’s always quoting tv shows and musicals and grows up literally in front of people and i’m not saying ransom has a sideblog dedicated to him but he honestly might

So that whole ‘Spider-Man is about youth’ thing

I know some people place a shitton of stock into the words of the professionals so let me just throw a few things at you.

Peter David is one of, possibly the, most accomplished writer under Marvel’s employ in terms of the breadth and acclaim garnered by his bibliography. This includes the critically acclaimed Death of Jean DeWolff storyline and the fan favourite Spider-Man 2099 series, which is about a very much ADULT character who is the Spider-Man of his timeline. He doesn’t think Spider-Man is about youth or that there is anything wrong with him being married. In fact he stated that the series as a whole spinning its wheels from the time of the Master Planner Trilogy up until the marriage when something really different happened. He began reading Spider-Man at some point before the original publication of Amazing Spider-Man #100 back in the early 1970s.

J.M. DeMatteis has written both critically acclaimed Spider-Man stories and stories which are the most layered and dense in terms of their theme and depth of human psychology. This has included the iconic Kraven’s Last Hunt. He also does not think Spider-Man is about youth or that he should not be married. In fact he made the marriage a vital part of his most revered storyline and utilized it a lot in his various other stories. He began reading Spider-Man at some point during the original John Romita Senior run of Spider-Man.

Tom DeFalco is former Editor-in-Chief of Marvel comics, former editor of Spider-Man, has written a very well regarded and vitally important run of Amazing Spider-Man in the 1980s and followed that up with two more runs (on Spectacular and Amazing Spider-Man) in the 1990s before embarking on a near (unbroken) 150 issue long run on fan favourite Spider-Girl. The latter by the way is currently the longest running (at least without substantial gaps) Spider-Man spin-off character and also the female Marvel character who’s had the most consistently longest running solo title ever.

He is also the author of the well reviewed 2001 book ‘Spider-Man the Ultimate Guide’ which was for it’s time the single most comprehensive information book about Spider-Man ever published. During his tenure as writer of Amazing Spider-Man he and Ron Frenz he established Mary Jane Watson as knowing Spider-Man’s secret identity and introduced readers to Spidey’s black costume, later establishing it as an alien symbiote. These and other elements from his run have made their way into other media and been constants in the Spider-Man series ever since.

Tom DeFalco has inferred on more than one occasion that his favourite era of Spider-Man was when Spider-Man was in High School. This makes a certain amount of sense because he first began reading Spider-Man in the early 1960s…specifically with Amazing Fantasy #15.

But did you know that Tom DeFalco ALSO doesn’t think Spider-Man is about youth. In fact he once specifically said Spider-Man isn’t about youth but responsibility, going on to say that the more responsibility Spider-Man has the more interesting the character is. When Spider-Man was originally married in the 1980s Tom DeFalco was against it…at first. He then changed his mind and became one of its biggest champion among other Marvel creators.

Tom DeFalco’s disbelief in the ideas that Spider-Man is about youth and that the marriage was antithetical to the character are evident in the fact that he proposed and implemented a storyline intended to make Spider-Man a parent and his creation of Spider-Girl (Peter Parker’s daughter) was partially done as a fulfillment of this idea.

Finally there is another Marvel creator to be discussed.

His name is Stan Lee.

Stan Lee is the co-creator  of Spider-Man. He also co-created the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, the Avengers and many other Marvel characters and properties which have endured to this very day.

His Spider-Man credits include literally the first 100 issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Amazing Fantasy #15, and various Spider-Man annuals.

Within those issues are stories which are regarded as undeniably the most iconic in Spider-Man’s history and the unquestionably most adapted source material for various Spider-Man media adaptations.

They include:

The origin of the character adapted and referenced in…pretty much every film and TV show about the character

The Master Planner Trilogy, regarded by many as the greatest Spider-Man story of all time. It inspired parts of the Playstation game Spider-Man 2000 and an episode of the Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series, both of which were critically acclaimed.

Amazing Spider-Man #42 the introduction of Spider-Man’s most famous love interest Mary Jane, an introduction so iconic it’s been homaged, parodied and referenced ad infinitum and adapted into two different cartoon shows

Spider-Man No More which once again has been referenced numerous times in various comics and other media (Marvel affiliated or otherwise) due to how iconic it is and was the major inspiration for Spider-Man 2, regarded as the best Spider-Man film of all time as well as at the time one of the best superhero/comic book films of all time.

Stan Lee for a number of years also wrote the Amazing Spider-Man Newspaper Strip which has remained in syndication ever since.

Stan Lee has to my knowledge NEVER  claimed Spider-Man is about youth.

It was in Stan Lee’s run that Spider-Man AGED  to the point where he graduated high school and attended college.

In a letters page Stan Lee in response to a statement about Spider-Man’s hypothetical child joked that the character wasn’t even married yet.

During Stan Lee’s run Peter Parker considered proposing to his girlfriend Betty Brant in only issue #30 of the series. Much later around issue #100 Peter was seriously considering marrying his girlfriend Gwen Stacy and was making plans for the sake of that future.

Stan Lee has gone on record numerous times that he created Gwen Stacy to be Peter’s ultimate love interest and because he believed she’d make the perfect wife for him.

Int he 1980s Stan Lee when asked by a fan if Peter and Mary Jane could get married opted to make that happen in the Newspaper strip and inquired about making it happen in the comics too.

Before the abolition of the marriage in the comics, Stan Lee in an interview was asked if he felt that Spider-Man being married in any way negatively affected the character. He didn’t feel that was the case.

After the marriage was abandoned in the main comics universe the newspaper strip did the same thing…temporarily. It eventually went back to featuring a married Spider-Man and has remained so ever since.

Now…call me crazy…but it seems to me that all of that would seem to possibly imply that maybe…just maybe…

Sense8 is the greatest tv show in history that is all about diversity.
There’s action, all types of love and sexualities, people all over the world that have a really cool connection full of action and funny moments and heartbreaking ones, it’s everything we all ever wanted but it doesn’t get any publicity so please watch it, its on Netflix, there’s two seasons, you won’t regret it.

midnighthotline  asked:

okay so arya and sansa were playing littlefinger.. then why did arya threaten to kill Sansa? Littlefinger wasn't in the room then. NO ONE was in the room at the time. it was just them. what was the point of that scene other than to misdirect the viewer? it doesn't make sense to me

Me neither, mate. Me freaking neither.

I think D&D said in an After Thrones video or in an interview, they did it to build tension over the ‘which Stark sister will kill which?’ plot, but otherwise, there was absolutely no purpose to those scenes if Arya and Sansa were in cahoots the entire time. It was all a contrived way to build anticipation over the course of a season.

This is the thing… Put aside ASoIaF, those who never read the books fell in love with Game of Thrones because it was a TV show that catered to the plot and the characters. Their sole focus was the story and only that. Of course that was mainly due to the fact that the source material they were going off on (ie GRRM’s novels) were largely subversive of fantasy/adventure tropes in and of itself. But the fact remains people started obsessing over the show because they were tired of the way network television continued to disregard plot and characters for fanservice or ratings. People were sick of long drawn out convoluted plots designed specifically to grip people through a season when there is literally no need to drag out said plot for that long. Game of Thrones was different, or at least it started out different.

Over the years and as the source material ceased to exist, GoT began to show signs of being just like every other network television. There are still elements we recognise that still make it a step above other shows, like CW shows which solely cater to fans and ratings, but its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. GoT is what it is because of GRRM’s story, but now that they are sailing on their own as they no longer have any source material to base things off of, GoT pales considerably in comparison to GRRM’s story.

I’m not saying I’m not still entertained. I don’t hate the show. I’m disappointed by it and annoyed by it, but like I said, there are still elements to GoT that I still love, characters that I’ve invested a lot of time into understanding and adoring and a storyline I’m interested in seeing conclude. But the consolation at this point for the show is the fact that GRRM gave them the conclusion to ASoIaF and in spite of how contrived the route they choose may be, they’re still going to have to end up at that conclusion somehow or another. And I have faith it’ll be a narratively satisfactory ending because of GRRM.

Anyway, this is a very roundabout way of saying, yeah that fucking sucked. Hahaha xD

Thank you ! I noticed Kit talked about Rose in a couple of interviews, I didn’t plan to post them but here are some bits for those who are interested :

“Now 30, he has certainly gone through many milestones during the last few years while playing Snow. “Well, yes. I met my girlfriend on the show (Rose Leslie, who plays Ygritte) and that has been the greatest gift of all.”

“The cast has grown up together in many ways. Having worked as a team for so long, he can’t imagine the cast not being a part of his life. “Well, I certainly hope one of the people who will remain in my life is Rose,” he laughs.”

“I think that’s the really special thing about it is that we met on this show and here we are seven years down the line back here promoting season seven,” Harington told ET’s Carly Steel at Wednesday night’s premiere. “I mean it’s mad. It’s such a special thing. I’m so privileged.”

Could castlevania be one of the first "video game to animation" adaptions that is actually good??????~!!!?!?!?!?!!111one

Are you implying that the Super Mario Bros. Super Show wasn’t the greatest video game adaptation of all time? With scenes like this?

But in all seriousness, it does look promising!

It’s been quiet….but with good reason!

Hey friends, fans, HWU family and the all of those all rolled into ones…

It’s been quiet over here on all forms of social media and in particular our forum! But I can promise you that it’s for a very good reason.

Originally Hollywood U was going to be an online series of around ten episodes or more.

But we’ve been getting some momentum and now we’re looking at a Series of twenty or more episodes!! This means that our writer is having to re-write a lot of the series so that we can make the storylines last longer, add in more characters and bring in some of the series two script into series one, which we are really excited for as it means the opening episodes don’t need to be so rushed now that we have more time to introduce you to everyone in the Hollywood U world.

We are working on opening up our website to the public soon and we can’t wait to share it with you and start getting you more updated with the Cast, Crew, Costumes, Designs and Sketches on the lead up to filming…

Thank you for your patience, you truly are the greatest fan base in the world ❤️🙌🏽

I am buggered by some of the recent writings (reviewers) against the latest season of Game of Thrones this year. They all seem to profoundly steamroll the show’s “lacking” of logic and its frequency, judging it by the lack of characterisation and the poor movement of the plot that we are left with staggering questions regarding the misuse of the shortened episodes.

And I am floored that people are agreeing because: have we been watching the same show these past six years or have we all of a sudden found a way to disenfranchise ourselves from the greatest written (and executed) television show in history?

No? Then what’s with the bull about characterisations and how the plot used to unfurl in a way that felt real and now just feels somewhat rushed? We are now down to the most important characters of the show, culled after a tumultuous six seasons; with every single bit of character development needed to unleash them in these final two seasons of the show.

We know each of the character’s motivations: Dany to rule the seven kingdoms and break the wheel, Cersei to avenge, revenge, and rule over in fear, Jon to rally the realm against their true enemy in the North, and Arya, Sansa, Jamie, Tyrion and the various secondary characters whom we have come to know and understand throughout the freakin’ six seasons past that there shouldn’t even be a question as to why the story is moving forward as fast as it is seemingly going.

I, for one, think that the seven episodes is going by quite nicely. Why? Because we don’t need the niceties of knowing these individual characters anymore. We already KNOW who they BLOODY ARE. We know their motivations, their objectives, their personalities, their triggers, etc. and so the story is set for them to be who they are as the situations turn against their favour or not. So, Daenerys becomes a little angry with Tyrion after being asked about her successor - she was cursed to not have a child for “death pays for life” so excuse her for being a little sensitive about it.

So Arya acts funkily “out of character” for threatening Sansa. Did she really though? Or was she simply playing the game she’s played and has been played with the many years she was away from home, seeing death, destruction and being ruthlessly trained to kill in Braavos? Did we somehow forget about that?

I can name every single characters’ “out of character” moments but it should be blatantly obvious to those who really watch the show that there is no bloody need for it.

If you want character development and unfurling plot, watch the last damn six seasons from season 1 to now. This season, season 7, and season 8 are the final, conclusive seasons of the entirety of the show. Now, we see ice and fire come together; long has it been prophesied and symbolised and harkened to in the past six seasons. Now, we see the wight walkers army trudge closer and closer to the wall, the great battle to come. Now, we see the final key players of the game come together in Westeros to fight, one last time, for what they all want, believe in, and are desperate for.

There is no need to untangle these characters anymore for they have already been untangled. They are already made bare for us to see, season six having done that great conclusion to their final characterisation arc at its peak. Now, it’s the monstrous season 7 of taking on the monsters from the North, and in themselves as they play the game one last time.

So stop writing about stupid things like everything’s going by really quickly, and the plot just fast-forwards. It has to because the the board is finally set and all the players are in position. There is no need to waffle on anymore. There is war, there is death, there is the game to be played one last bloody time.

Deafening Silence (prompt: Unreliable Narrator, horror)

Hello, and thank you for your time!

For my creative writing class, I wrote a short story for the prompt “Unreliable Narrator” where we had to reveal the narrator’s lack of reliability as the story went on: it ended up being a short horror story, as I had the idea for a while already.

I liked how it came out, but something feels… missing. I would highly encourage any feedback, no matter how critical it is, so long as its constructive! I feel the story could benefit if I added more at the beginning, building up the narrator as a sympathetic figure before the rest rolls. I feel “something” is missing, but I can’t tell what.

This is OK to reblog if you wish: while I’ll likely delete this version in time, if it can help get more feedback, I’d appreciate it!

This story is roughly three pages long, thank you for your time!

SNS Secret Santa: “Dragon Riders”

Here’s my Secret Santa gift for @georgeyani, with the theme of “Game of Thrones”! Mildly NSFW. Blatant geek ranting which may be coming from me, not Sasuke, *cough*. Enjoy!!

“Dragon Riders”

It was their weekly Game of Thrones night, an important tradition they’d established years ago and one that had been fiercely protected by Sasuke, lest Naruto replace it with one of his aggravating sitcoms. His boyfriend didn’t have the greatest taste in TV shows or movies, that was for sure- it was lucky he had other skills to make up for it.

“This is ridiculous,” Sasuke muttered, arms folded across his chest, leaning heavily on the couch cushions. “Why are we even watching this anymore?” In Sasuke’s opinion, his favourite show had taken a huge turn for the worst this season, and he was very, very angry.

“Because it’s awesome!” Naruto declared, shoving another handful of popcorn into his mouth and grinning. “Look how big the dragons have gotten this season!” Oh yes, all that flashy stuff was all he cared about.

Sasuke pouted. “Big deal,” he retorted. “It’s all wrong!! I don’t know what the writers were thinking!” They’d made so many changes this season, he had no idea how they were going to get themselves out of this mess.

Naruto’s grin widened and he slid over on the couch, draping his arm over Sasuke’s shoulder. “Oh, wait, are you gonna go on another geek rant? I love when you do that! Hang on, let me just pause the TV-”

“It’s wrong!” Sasuke scowled, trying to shrug Naruto off; this was not the time! “None of this stuff even happened in the books, I don’t understand why the hell Sansa is marrying that guy-”

“Yeah, that’s pretty sucky,” Naruto interrupted, wrinkling his nose and ruffling Sasuke’s hair. “He’s awful. Poor thing, but, you have to admit it was-”

“No!!” Sasuke interjected, ducking his head away from Naruto’s hand. “She’s not meant to be there!! And where on earth is Harry the Heir, because-”

“Aww,” Naruto said, reaching out and poking his cheek. “You are so cute when you’re angry about this nerdy stuff!”

Sasuke growled under his breath. Cute?! Well, forgive him for caring about accuracy. All the writers had to do was read the damn books and follow the rules. “That’s enough for tonight,” he said, switching off the TV. He was just too annoyed!

“Oh, is it bedtime?” Naruto asked, his eyes brightening, running his hand down Sasuke’s face to his neck and down his shoulder. “That sounds nice-”

Sasuke slammed the remote down on the table and stood up. “I’m so angry!!” he exclaimed. “I can’t believe this shit!”

“Good, get mad,” Naruto said, standing up as well and wrapping his arms around Sasuke from behind. “Get really mad, kitten. God, I love it when you get vicious-”

“Even I could have done a better job of this show,” Sasuke said with a scowl, storming off to their bedroom and dragging Naruto behinds him. “Ugh, I don’t even care anymore, they can do what they want-”

“And we can do what we want,” Naruto purred, nipping Sasuke’s ear and slipping his hands under his shirt when Sasuke paused to open their bedroom door.

“Distract me,” Sasuke said to Naruto. “I’m so mad!”

“Oh, I’m gonna distract you, alright!” Naruto declared, smirking and running his hands down to Sasuke’s thighs. “Let’s play dragon riders! I’ll be the dragon, and you-”

“Anything’s better than watching that!!” Sasuke shrieked, ignoring the way Naruto’s face lit up at that.

Yes, that was enough of all that unpleasantness for one night; and who the hell cared anyway?! It was just a TV show. He had his build blonde boyfriend eager to distract him, and really, wasn’t that so much better??

…well, he might be mad about it all again, in the morning.

2: Sugar cones or waffle cones?

In the UK we have wafer cones (made with 100% real ceiling tile) or waffle cones. I dunno if sugar cones are the same as wafer, google images suggests not, but I’m rather eat a paper tube than a wafer cone!!

5: Is there a food you’ve never had but always wanted to try?

I’d love to try Hawaiian food, I only ever visited Oahu with relatives who were allergic to flavour so I never got to try any and I really feel like I missed out.

21: What snacks do you usually get at the theater?

Baskin Robbins!! Gimme all the ice cream. I’m gonna eat it during the adverts but at least it stops me swearing at the screen!

22: What’s an underrated video game/ movie/ show you love and think it needs more recognition?

The Lost Room is one of the greatest TV shows of all time. I think everyone should watch it at least once. Dogma is probably my favourite movie no one talks about any more.

24; All plants are great but do you have a favourite?

One day I’ll grow lilac for the 25th of May :)
