or that it's worth a try to find more people for the band

hi i wanted to write a post about BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) because ive never ever seen it discussed and i would like more people to be aware of it and maybe, some other people will realize they have it and not feel so messed up like i did for a long time

BDD is a disorder that makes you hyperfocus on your appearance, a lot of times its a specific part of your appearance. you obsess over a perceived ugliness and it preoccupies a lot of your time & makes daily functioning/social interaction very hard. its linked with other anxiety disorders (specifically OCD which i also have) and sometimes is thought of as being a subset of OCD

heres some symptoms in no particular order:

  • hiding/masking yourself (needing to put on a lot of makeup, always wearing sunglasses or baggy clothes, in my case i have to wear band-aids on my face and sometimes have to wear a literal face mask)
  • intense anxiety/suicidal feelings if “mask” isnt available
  • need for reassurance about appearance, but then immediately disqualifying any compliments you receive (”theyre just saying that to appease me, its because this picture was in a certain lighting/edited, i was wearing makeup” etc)
  • self-worth largely tied to appearance and thus feeling worthless very often. as a consequence it becomes really hard to talk about symptoms because preoccupation w/ appearance is seen as “vain”
  • withdrawal/fear in close or intimate relationships for fear of being seen as ugly
  • avoiding social situations for fear of being seen as ugly
  • looking in the mirror a lot (or avoiding mirrors), analyzing appearance daily, picking at skin/face/etc
  • comparing your appearance to other peoples (excessively and constantly: “people think this person is pretty and i look nothing like them so im ugly. people have called this trait ugly and i have it so im ugly” etc)
  • missing school, work, other events bc you feel like everyone will be staring at you and judging your appearance. this contributed to me dropping out of school
  • obsession with changing appearance or “fixing” perceived defects (personally i was obsessed with skincare for a long time and was always trying to find the perfect skincare routine and spent so much money on products trying to make my acne go away)

theres probably more but yea, this is getting really long! i would really really appreciate if people reblogged this so other people can know about it, also if you have any questions or just want to talk about your experiences feel free to shoot me an ask!

Texts Between Strangers

Note: female/woman ‘reader’

Hey, it was really nice meeting you last night. Maybe we can grab lunch tomorrow? This is Cisco btw.

The text pops up on your phone screen as you’re scrolling through social media. You’ve been lounging in bed on this rainy Saturday morning planning on doing absolutely nothing for the rest of the day but binge watch The Walking Dead and order thai take out later. You just stare at the text for a minute, blinking.

You definitely didn’t give your number to anyone last night because all you did yesterday was pull a double shift at Jitters because they’ve been short staffed lately. A long day at work usually left you looking a bit wrecked so you’re damn sure there wasn’t anyone slipping their digits your way either.

This person has the wrong number.

*curtsies* Duke, I need some help here. Just noticed that I have a huge lack on my character creation. I only write the "warmey hearted and happy" characters. How can I... "fix" that? I have interest in writing different characters but... I just... can't. It's like I didn't understand them enough. How do I write a cold and calculist character? Without making it either a "happey heart" or unrealist, or even the "completly feelingless stereotype"? Please help me!!! I have no idea of what to do!!!!

*Curtsies* First big rule of writing that Tumblr brainwashes out of people because we tend to balk at anything ‘problematic’:

You need conflict in fiction.

If everybody is nice to each other and agrees about everything and never miscommunicates, you don’t have a story. You have slow-burn fluff fic and that’s fine if that’s what you’re trying to write, but if you aren’t, you need to spice things up. You need problems. You need conflict. You need more than one personality type.

Writing good characters is hard. You are literally inventing a human being from scratch, and that kind of complexity takes months (if not years) of work to create, so that’s the first thing I want to be clear about:

There are no shortcuts to good character.

Writing is, in every sense, an iceberg type of art form, and what a reader will eventually see on a page is only about 1% of the work you actually have to do to make that 1% worth reading. Character, like plot and setting and everything else in fiction, requires long hard nose-to-the-grindstone hours of work. It also requires research. You can’t skimp on any of this or your characters will come out feeling like paper dolls.

As for how to actually excavate a character: I’ve talked a lot about this under the character development tag and especially this post here, but here is what I think should be the first step for everyone who’s trying to turn a paper doll into flesh and blood:

Start with the moment where your character first appears in your story, and work backward through every remotely significant event of their life until you get to their birth.

By ‘every remotely significant event’ I don’t just mean when their mom died or when they lost their virginity. I mean every event that was remotely significant to them, even if it was just getting their braces off or listening to their favorite band for the first time. If you really commit to this, it’s going to raise a lot of questions along the way. How long did they live in Kenosha? Where did she get that dress? Why did her dad lose that job? Who introduced her to that author? Here’s the crucial thing:

Nothing you learn about a character is insignificant.

Even if it’s just what their least favorite vegetable is. 99% of this information will not end up in the final manuscript, and that’s fine. What’s important is that you know it, because a character (like a real human being) is the sum of their parts, and even their childhood aversion to cooked carrots will contribute to who they become. I recently got a question on my author blog about why I can spit out so many random trivial details about each of my main characters. And the answer is because none of it’s random and none of it’s trivial. If you’re trying to bring a person to life with prose, you can’t afford not to know every little thing about them. Want to know why?

It is a hell of a lot easier to write a character you know as well as you know yourself than to write a character you only know as a player in your story.

Characters have lives before and beyond the book you’re writing, just like real people have lives before and beyond the moments you interact with them. Our life experiences shape who we are and how we behave, so if you don’t know everything that has occurred in this character’s life prior to this moment, how could you possibly know how they would respond to a question even as simple as “How are you?” So. Spend the time. It will not be time wasted. Writing requires patience.

Writing also requires research. Because you can’t just write a bunch of characters who are vague avatars for yourself, you will have to venture out of your comfort zone. If you do that thing I suggested where you plot each person’s life all the way back to their birth, you will inevitably stumble across things you don’t fully understand–and that’s where the research comes in. You have a hard time writing cold, calculating characters? Start with the basic questions: Why is this person this way? Coming up empty? Find some real-life examples. If you’re writing a serial killer, go buy every biography of real-life serial killers you can get your hands on. Watch Making a Murderer. Take a criminal psychology class. Writing about a chef? Read chefs’ memoirs. Follow chefs’ blogs. Go to restaurants. Learn to cook. Don’t steal any real person’s personality wholesale, but pay attention to patterns and details so that when you create your own character, they feel real.

Use the real world for research. Learn from life.

The most important lesson you can learn from life is that very few people can be easily categorized. Most exist somewhere on a moral/behavioral spectrum that doesn’t fit neatly into those Myers-Briggs boxes everyone here on Tumblr loves so much. People are complicated and often conditional. A character who is warm-hearted and loving is much less interesting and much less believable than a character who is warm-hearted and loving but only towards children, because we immediately want to know more about her and why she doesn’t have the same sympathy for people her own age. And let’s be honest: no real person is warm-hearted and loving all the time. Figuring out exactly how this person’s life has gone will help you decide how they behave in any given situation.

We all have quirks and idiosyncrasies and learned behaviors that may, at first glance, defy explanation. We have hopes and fears and secrets and none of that is stuff you’re going to discover by taking another MBTI test on a character’s behalf. Rifle through the stuff of their life until you know not only exactly which magazines are lying under their bed but also why they have five credit cards they aren’t telling their wife about. When it comes to character, you can never know enough, even though writing in broad strokes might look a lot easier at the outset. Nothing about writing is easy, characters included.

People are messy. Resist the urge to simplify them.

Put the work in. I promise you, doing the digging and the research and learning who a person is before you try to put them on paper will make every word you write about them come more naturally and make more sense. And though a reader may never see those notebooks crammed full of every minute thing you learned about their life, they can intrinsically tell the difference between paper dolls and characters who are three-dimensional and fully formed and have been turned inside out by their author.

Really all this advice comes down to one thing, which is that you can’t half-ass character. You’re creating a person.

Commit.

Bellarke Fic were Bellamy finds out when Clarke’s birthday is and makes her her a ring or bracelet or picks her a flower or something?? :) - cause she should still celebrate her birthday even if it’s the apocalypse :) THANKYOU

Wow, k, so I saved this ask in my drafts and now it won’t post which is super cute. Sorry, anon. Anyway, I wrote this fairly quickly? It was just fun to write lmao. ALSO ty @bcnightsquad for inspiring me with the drinking game vignette you sent <3

Bellamy shouldn’t have expected to beat Clarke at pong. He saw her obliterate everyone at every alcohol fueled game during their time at the Dropship, but for some reason he still agreed to play against her tonight. He’s not bad, and she’s had to down a few of her own cups thanks to him, but Clarke has hardly missed a shot. Before he knows it, Bellamy is chugging his last cup in defeat.

“You know,” he says, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, “seeing as I’m a member of the guard, the legal drinking age is twenty one, and you’re only seventeen, I could arrest you right now if I wanted to.”

With a roll of her eyes, Clarke aims the browned, bent ping pong ball they used to play at Bellamy’s head. “First of all, age restrictions stopped being enforced the day one hundred kids were sent to Earth without adult supervision,” Clarke reminds him. It’s not a written rule but Bellamy supposes it’s true. Age is obsolete when all that matters is survival. “Second,” Clarke continues, “I’m eighteen.”

“Still not of age,” counters Bellamy. He tosses the ping pong ball back to her.

“Must we revisit my first point?”

Clarke’s age has never been something Bellamy focused on. She’s wiser than the oldest Arkadian and more mature than most adults. If her youthful features didn’t play a factor in Bellamy’s perception of her, he would assume she’s the most ancient person on the planet. It’s easy to forget that in reality, the only reason Clarke is on Earth at all is because she was just a kid.

And now she’s not.

Age isn’t important on the ground, birthdays even less so, but people are important. Clarke is important. Especially to Bellamy.

How could he have possibly missed her birthday?

“Since when have you been eighteen?” Bellamy asks.

Clarke shrugs, walking over to the other end of the table to stand with him. “Since Mount Weather, I think. Could have been before that. The council forgot to supply us with calendars.”

“Typical.”

“Not that Priamfaya would spare me if I were still seventeen.”

“You’re literally turning a conversation about your birthday into a discussion about the end of the world.”

“My birthday was months ago, Bellamy.” Any humor Clarke wears slips from her face as she steps into his space. She stares him dead in the eyes when she says “the apocalypse is now.”

Trying for comfort, Bellamy slides his knuckles along the path between her elbow and shoulder. “You really know how to lighten the mood, Princess.”

Frowning, Clarke conks her head against his shoulder and rests it there. Into his sleeve she mumbles a halfhearted “shut up.”

I was on the Daily Mail site for a random reason and ran across this.  It’s not in the article itself (the one on 1D’s net worth), but it’s the thumbnail for it.

It’s 2017 and we still have these ridiculous stereotypes.

Niall as the “wholesome” one?  Are they forgetting that he’s the one who cursed so much that he was quiet in interviews because he wasn’t sure he would remember not to swear?  Are they forgetting all the women they’ve claimed he dated while they already had other boyfriends or that supposedly left their boyfriends for him? (No, he didn’t really date those women)

Harry as the hot one?  I mean, Harry’s hot, but even my coworker who knows nothing about the boys and isn’t particularly interested was surprised at how attractive all of them are.  They definitely kick the boy band cliche of having a few hot members and a few that aren’t so much.  They couldn’t come up with anything more specific for Harry?

Liam as the “sensible” one?  It’s like we’re back to Daddy Direction which hasn’t really been a thing with the boys for years.  Plus, I find their definition of “sensible” interesting since they’re claiming that Liam was up for having a baby with a woman he’d only been dating for a few months who had 2 failed marriages and was still married to the last one. (No, it’s not really his baby)

Louis as the wild one?  Louis is definitely rebellious and mischievous, but they’re clearly capitalizing on the airport thing to try to make him look reckless and violent when he’s a level-headed sweetheart in reality.  He was super reasonable and peaceful in that airport debacle.  Many people would have engaged after being hit at, but all he did was break up the fighting and escape the conflict as soon as everyone was safe.

And Zayn.  It’s an absolute farce how much Gigi is in Zayn’s business where she doesn’t belong.  It’s to the point where even in this photo, she takes up 75% of it when it’s entirely about Zayn.  (No, he’s not really dating her) Also, the “brooding” one?  Just because Zayn has resting gorgeous-and-pensive face doesn’t mean he’s brooding.  He’s intellectual, principled, artistic, loyal, dorky, goofy, sweet with fans, and has a smile that lights up a room.

An anonymous asker wanted me to comment on a certain analysis of Dipper and Mabel’s relationship, encountered elsewhere on the Internet, which interpreted their bond as a destructive and unhealthy one. Anon shared the original analysis with me in full, but was kind enough to provide me with a point-by-point summation of the poster’s arguments, each of which I will address herein.

A) Mabel may learn lessons, but she easily forgets them later on and doesn’t actually tangibly change as a person and doesn’t actually learn anything as her behaviour is still roughly the same.

Mabel’s a more static character than her brother, I grant you that. Dipper’s the protagonist, and as such the character whose growth is the series focus; he’s an avatar of creator Alex Hirsch himself, so there’s a lot of gentle self-deprecation in the way he’s written. But I tend to think that, in terms of story, it makes sense for Mabel to maintain a certain childishness, because that part of her comes to a head during the Weirdmageddon arc, when she has to choose between eternal childhood and the hard reality of growing older.

Dipper himself doesn’t change much during the series; he learns various smaller lessons to the effect of “just let things happen and don’t try to rush them,” but, until the finale, fails to fully imbibe the larger lesson about growing up. The events of Weirdmageddon give us Dipper at his best; he sheds the pervasive need to be seen as an adult that has characterized him from the beginning and in so doing appears at his most mature. He becomes a realist. He stops getting in his own way. At the same time, Mabel relinquishes her selfishness, the world which revolves around her, and her unwillingness to move forward, even granting Dipper the freedom to stay with Ford if he so chooses. They each grow in a far more definite way than they did over the course of the series proper, in which their character flaws were excellent plot fodder. (It’s also worth noting that in the show, as in real life, maturation is a process; we tend to revert to type, and it’s rare that one definitive “lesson” alters our tendencies. We have to learn again and again.)

5SOS bassist lit a cigarette.

Calum Hood, 19 year-old rockstar, was seen out and about 130 days consecutively.

Calum Hood’s rumoured to be cheating…

Calum angrily threw his phone across the empty hotel bed as the headlines started to add fuel to his rage. 3 years. He had been dealing with all the bullshit the media had thrown at him for 3 years. Not once did he flinch. He was reminded everyday that the consequences of living his dream might be costly but it was worth it, with all the people rocking out to the rhythms he composed, screaming at the top of their lungs to the lyrics that was so personal to him.

But the people who were wearing shirts with his face on them, the people who claimed to be his “biggest fans” stabbed him the hardest.

Special Affair (Bruce Wayne x Reader)

A/N: Remember like a month or two or however many ago when I was on a jealousy kick? c: This is just a little intermission snack for some Bruce/HANK (I MISS HIM) requests I’m workin’ on~ ♥

Word Count: 1936

“Again, I can’t express enough how thankful I am that you all came here tonight and how supportive you’ve been. I just wanted to remind everyone that the charity auction will be ending shortly, so don’t forget to place any last bids while you still can! Enjoy the rest of your night.” I stepped away from the mic stand and went back to all of my guests. I was hosting a sort of thank you dinner for Gotham Outreach, a non-profit organization myself and some college friends started to help the youth of this city. It was also the celebration of our first year running and I couldn’t have asked for more success for a starter organization.

I was enjoying a laugh and champagne with my co-founders when I noticed a guest freeing himself from an older set of donors. “Bruce Wayne… I haven’t seen you all night, thought my invitation got lost in the mail.”

“I was stuck in meetings all day but made sure to carve out my evening for this very special occasion.”

I smiled. Never for a moment did he fail to be charming. “You know Mr. and Mrs. Dunham?”

“They were long time friends of my parents. I grew up around their grandson.”

 “I see.”

“This is an amazing turnout. I believe congratulations are in order.”

“Thank you, thank you. Yeah, it’s beautiful isn’t it? I never imagined things would be this great.”

“And I see some of the kids you’ve helped here.”

I shook my head and looked around the event hall. “No… We all helped them. Everyone here, every donation, every helping hand. We all changed their lives.”

“Y/N?” I turned around at the sound of my name from a vaguely familiar voice to see the face of an old friend.

 “Oh my G- Teddy??”

He laughed and reached for a hug. “It’s so good to see you, Y/N!”

“Yes yes, it’s been so long! Oh my goodness!”

He turned to Bruce before extending his hand. “Bruce Wayne, a pleasure to meet you.”

“Oh my gosh- Bruce, this is Tedd- I’m sorry. Dr. Theodore Durant.”

“Nice to meet you, Dr. Durant.”

“Please, call me Theo. The pleasure’s mine. It’s not everyday you get to meet Mr. Wayne Enterprises himself.”

“I thought you were still in Syria?” I cut in before this became a boys club meeting.

“I was up until two days ago when I remembered I had a very important charity event to attend.”

I rolled my eyes. “Please, tell me you didn’t stop saving lives for champagne in Gotham.”

“Champagne in Gotham with a very dear friend. Congratulations, Y/N.”

“Thank you, Teddy.” I felt my face burn and took a sip from my champagne glass in attempt to hide any visible redness.

“Saving lives?” Bruce asked, eyes suddenly staring dead into mine. If I wasn’t red before his stare would surely do the trick.

“Oh, umm- Teddy’s busying himself lately doing some Doctors Without Borders work overseas. His latest venture was in Syria.”

“Doctors Without Borders, that’s amazing. What kind of work are you doing?”

“Pediatrics,” Teddy answered. “You know in another life, this one would have been right beside me doing the same thing,” he spoke, pointing his glass in my direction.

“Oh no no. You see, I thought I could handle pediatrics until I thought of another more suitable way I could help out children.”

“And here you are today…” The way Teddy spoke those words…  I looked at him and it seemed like he was in absolute awe of me. I wasn’t used to people being in awe, being proud of me. It was an unfamiliar but amazing feeling.

“So you two… met in med school?” Bruce questioned.

I snapped out of my haze, looking at him. “No, we met in undergrad school. We started dating a little ways through our second year.”

 “Oh. You two dated previously?”

“Yes, but ended it after about five years and some change. Teddy was completely swamped getting prepared for med school and I was working with the co-founders here trying to plan the future of the Outreach. Two very busy times in both our lives, it wasn’t fair to either of us to try to carve out time for a relationship.”

“I see. Admittedly I’m familiar with that unfortunate predicament.”

“Billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, relationship struggles? I wouldn’t believe that if I saw it with my own two eyes,” Teddy said before chuckling, shaking his head and drinking from his glass.

“Trust me, it’s not as easy as some think.”

“Teddy’s been generous enough to donate and send families in need of help to the Outreach. He’s been a great help, even all the way across the world.”

“Well Gotham’s home. I don’t have to be here to want the best for this city. The best for you… Besides, you know my upbringing; I wish I had a Gotham Outreach when I was coming up-”

“-Oh please, because you just turned out so terribly-”

“- Hey, just because I turned my coal to diamonds doesn’t mean I didn’t wish I had more help along the way, alright?” We laughed together, Bruce silently huffing a laugh to himself before Teddy parted ways to make his rounds. He was only in town for a short while and had more familiar faces to catch up with, and while he insisted I refused to hog his time to myself.

I shook my head to myself. “I can not believe he actually came. I thought it was wishful thinking sending him that invite, thinking word would ever get to him…”

“Don’t think you’re worth the trip?”

I rolled my eyes and made my way over to the bar to grab another glass of champagne as Bruce walked with me. “He came here for the same reasons everyone else did: to support the Outreach.”

Bruce nodded to himself. “Perhaps. Then again, maybe he gets a little lonely all the way in Syria…”

I laughed. “Sometimes it shocks me when you let your sense of humor come out to play.”

 “Oh, am I joking now?”

“What is it, Bruce? You wanna be the only handsome philanthropist in my life?” I teased.

 “So you think he’s handsome?”

I laughed again. Of course he’d ignore the fact I was calling him handsome, too. “Here,” I said as I handed him a glass of bubbly, also grabbing one for myself. “Have a glass of champagne, maybe two. Loosen up and enjoy yourself, okay? I’m gonna go personally thank a few more people, check on the auction. You owe me a dance before you leave, you hear me?”

“Well, can’t end the night without a dance, can we?”

I grinned as I slowly backed away from him before turning around to tend to some of my other guests. When the time came for the winners of auction bids to be announced I took to the podium with the other co-founders and called names. As I walked down the stairs of the stage to return to the party, my partner Micah made his way back to the mic. “What better way to top off a beautiful evening of charity than to say that not only have we met our goal for tonight, but we are nearly twelve grand over! That being said we’re very grateful and are closing donations for the night; of course, any donations after tonight can be received through the Gotham Outreach website…” I listened for another second before hearing a familiar name. I looked around the room, at everyone applauding, before finding Bruce sipping from his glass. Once we made eye contact I made my way over to him. He rested his glass on the bar before I grabbed him by the hand to pull him to the floor for the dance I told him to save for me.

We stared at each other and said nothing as we swayed side to side to the music the live band was playing. At least, we said nothing until he smirked and said a polite congrats to me.

I shook my head and rolled my eyes. “Thank you, Bruce. And you can relax now. You know he brought a date, right? She had an emergency surgery and had to leave shortly before we ran into each other.”

“A date when he clearly came to see you? What a fool.”

“Well he wasn’t the one that donated an absurd amount of money to score some extra points with me. I know you didn’t bid in the auction, and I heard Micah mumbling your name after announcing we reached our goal. I’m sorry, we far surpassed our goal”

“What you call absurd I call the least I can do.”

“Now you should be ashamed of yourself, Bruce Wayne. Using a time like this as an opportunity to strut like a peacock.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about; I was moved by a good cause.”

“If we’re being honest, a charity event isn’t the worst place to have a pissing match…”

“There we go, finding the silver lining.”

“Jokes aside, you know money doesn’t impress me. He’s donated just like you have, and you’ve both helped in other ways, too. This isn’t a who does it better contest, especially when you’re both so great at different things.”

“Who said I was trying to impress you? I’m just as interested in helping Gotham’s youth as anyone here.”

“You know, I’m in such an amazing mood tonight that I’m gonna choose to believe that.”

He smiled. “I’m glad to hear it. Now how good of a mood are we talking?” he mumbled after dropping his voice an octave or two, leaning closer to me.

I chuckled. “You’d like to know, wouldn’t you?”

“If I were a lesser man I would have kissed you here in front of him and everyone else already, although that’s not to say I don’t want to…”

“You know I’m not kissing you in public. The last thing I want is to be plastered on the front of a newspaper as Bruce Wayne’s next conquest.”

“Fine, then kiss me in the car on the way to my place.”

 “Ever the Lothario.”

“Always a gentleman first. You’re in such a great mood, I can only think of one way to finish this night… ”

I sighed. “You make a strong argument, Wayne.” His grip tightened just enough for me to look up at him into his eyes, kind but something less gentlemanly lurking behind them. Something feral. I had to look away if I was gonna stick to that no kissing in public rule. “I can’t just leave them to wrap up here.”

He brought his hand from my waist to my forehead before his brow furrowed slightly. “You know… I thought you were looking a little green, but now…” He nodded to himself. “Now I see you feel a bit warm, too. I think you may have had a bit too much to drink, don’t you?” The corner of his mouth turned upward a bit before he winked at me. I laughed and shook my head. Who would have thought, Bruce of all people telling me to play hooky and ditch clean up duty.

“… Tell them you saw me dash for the bathroom, looking pretty bad, then come get me.”

“I’ll text you when the car’s outside ready for you. Now go.”

“You’re fun when you misbehave, Wayne,” I purred as I pulled my bottom lip between my teeth, backing away from him to head to the ladies’ room.

“You haven’t seen me in action yet…”

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #144 - Coraline

Spoilers below

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: Blu-ray

1) Director Henry Selick is probably best known for his work as director on The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I personally think (and this may be considered blasphemy) that Coraline is his magnum opus. More on that coming up.

2) In both horror and animation, a well done score can boost the tone of the film remarkably. And composer Bruno Coulais is able to turn in a score notable for its subtlety and tone boosting. It is able to be ominous, child like, fantastical, and creepy all at the same time. That is actually a perfect way of describing this film.

3) Animation fans with eagle eyes will notice that the movers in the beginning in the film are the “Ranft Brothers”. Joe Ranft was a legendary animator, known mostly for his work at Pixar until his tragic death. His brother is a noteworthy animator too, Jerome Ranft. The movers are animated in the likenesses of the brothers (you even get a glance at a name tag reading “Jerome”), with Joe being the mover who gets the crummy tip and Jerome Ranft voicing his counterpart.

4) Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones.

Coraline is not your typical animated heroine, which is exactly why she is such an amazing character. She’s a bit of a snot actually. She’s bratty, shown to be mean, overdramatic, sarcastic, winey, and it is all amazing! Because she’s not ONLY those things! She’s also fun, intelligent, clever, imaginative and adventurous. For most of the film she is at odds with her parents but she risks her film for them because, well, they’re her parents! The best way to describe Coraline is as a kid. An honest portrayal of a kid! Not totally one thing or another and not nearly as oblivious as some people may expect. Dakota Fanning (who was attached to the role when the film was meant to be live action even) is perfect in the part, able to portray all of Coraline’s qualities with wonderful ease while totally losing herself in the role. Coraline is the title character which means we - as the audience - NEED to be invested in her for this film to be any good. And the filmmakers did an excellent job making sure we were just that: invested.

Coraline [after seeing The Cat]: “Not talking, huh?”

6) This film is a little more adult than your typical animated fare, something which is established pretty early when Coraline refers to Wybie as her stalker. It is a decision in tone and content which works wonderfully for the film.

7) Wybie.

We don’t get to see much of Wybie in the film. Well, that’s not entirely true. We don’t get to see much of Wybie compared to CORALINE, who is the lead and is therefore in every scene except for the one that plays during the opening credits. But in the time we see him it is very clear that this is the neighborhood weird kid. And it’s done accurately too! He’s not the butt of any joke, he’s not someone who’s supposed to be a creep or a plot device. Just like Coraline, he’s an honest representation of the kids out in the world who are sort of strange.

8) Dang, Coraline can be mean!

Coraline [after someone calls for Wyborne ‘Wybie’s’ name]: “Oh I definitely heard someone, Why Were You Born.”

Like, sure the dude is sorta weird, but he’s been pretty nice so far. But that’s part of Coraline’s character, and we see that side of her go on a bit of a transformation throughout the film.

9) Film is first and foremost a visual way of storytelling and animation can do that better than live action can if done right. Through animation you are able to portray the character of things (not just your characters but places and items) through design. Through your visuals. Take this film for example: the real world is marked by a more subdued color palette and look. Everything - including Coraline’s parents - look grey, tired, and worn down. Something which creates an immediate visual conflict through Coraline, who from the very start gives off these incredible vibrant and lively colors. It is a visual conflict which is reflective of a textual one that works wonders for the film.

10) It would have been easy to make Coraline a total brat and her parents good parents who try their hardest, but Mom and Dad aren’t perfect either. Mom particularly shows us where Coraline got her attitude, sarcasm, and occasional brattiness from (and I know “brat” has negative connotations to it but I love Coraline so when I call her a “brat” I’m doing so with love because that trait is something I think is a great writing decision for her character). It also gets to the idea that a friend of mine told me once: parents are just kids who have kids. Parents don’t know what they’re doing when they have kids, they’re making it up as they go along. Which means they’re not perfect. They can get tired and impatient and mean too, and showing that in this film continues its honesty streak. That honesty - in relationships in characters - is what helps make it so great.

11) I can’t IMAGINE what animating the tunnel sequence was like.

I mean stop motion animation is moving something a tiny bit, then taking a picture. And you repeat that process over and over again with puppets until you have a moving image like this one. So the tunnel on its own - with the lighting and the fabric - must have been a pain to animate. But then Coraline walking through it? And jostling it around, but the animators have to make sure that jostling is perfect in every frame? I do NOT have the patience for stop motion animation, I tell you. Or the fingers. I don’t have delicate fingers.

12) The Other World.

Going with the idea of visual conflict, there is immediately more of a peace between Coraline’s vibrant colors and the creative rainbow like Other World she finds herself in. This resolves most of the visual conflict ON THE SURFACE, but everywhere there are these black buttons. These little dark specs that just liter the world in hard to see places, things which can easily get lost in the magic of it all but are always there. Hiding in plain sight.

The Other World - both in its dream and nightmare phases - show off Selick’s wild imagination. The best animation directors have a penchant for imaginative visuals, using the medium to do things live action couldn’t (something I observed in my The Book of Life post back in November). Selick as not only animator but production designer on this film is able to create some wonderful and memorable images of dream like fantasy which makes the transition to nightmarish scenes in the back half of the film all the more powerful. It is truly wonderful.

13) According to IMDb:

The band They Might Be Giants wrote 10 songs for the movie, but a change in tone from a musical to a darker production meant that all but one was cut; a scene in which Coraline’s other father sings along with a piano features John Linnell’s voice. The band has said they will release the other songs created for the movie in other projects, including albums.

14) It is worth noting that the initial dinner Coraline has with her Other Parents is more of a Norman Rockwell, classic/idyllic image than her dinner at home (in both the food served and the look of the place). This relates to the film’s almost critique (I say almost because I do not know if it was intended, but it very well could have been) on expectations vs reality. How we have let certain fantasies shape our expectations in the real world and if we find something that fits those expectations perfectly it’s probably a lie.

15) Teri Hatcher shines in this film, particularly as Other Mother. There are three sort of phases to her performance as Other Mother which I will discuss individually as they occur. The first of these is the initial encounter with Other Mother. The sweet sing-song tones filled with love and warmth which can trick someone into thinking its honesty but when you listen there is DEFINITELY something false about it. A faux kindness which can catch you off guard. No one is really that kind, that nice. That’s the face you put on for company when it’s over and not one you can sustain forever.

16) Ian McShane as Mr. Bobinsky.

I observed in my recap for the Selick directed The Nightmare Before Christmas that the film was able to create unique characterizations within seconds of introducing us to said characters which lasted consistently throughout the rest of the film. In this film - especially with Coraline’s neighbors - the same holds true. We are able to get a sense of what kind of fun weirdo Mr. Bobinsky is within seconds of meeting him, someone who’s a bit of a nut but also a generally nice guy, and that lasts through the end of the film. Ian McShane does a wonderful job as Bobinsky and out of the three neighbors (Bobinksy and the two actresses), Bobinsky is my personal favorite.

It is also worth observing Bobinsky’s character design here. As I said before, animation tells you a lot through its visuals about a character. Small elements in Bobinsky’s design make him a bit more human than say your average Prince Charming or seven dwarfs. The ratty shirt, the unkempt body hair, the big gut. All of it gives Bobinsky not only a sense of character but a sense of realism, as life is not always as pretty as we expect. This plays DIRECTLY into Other Bobinsky’s appearances, notably how he is better dressed AND his torso is upside down. Instead of having a large stomach, he has a large chest suggesting strength. THAT is your fairytale version of Bobinsky right there and - like everything else in the Other World - it’s a lie.

17) Similarly, the two actress neighbors of Miriam Forcible and April Spink are established as weird but lovable dog ladies as soon as we meet them.

I mentioned before how this film plays with the ideas of expectations vs reality, and that becomes pretty clear after we meet Coraline’s neighbors. This is not some fairytale for Coraline. In a fairytale Mr. Bobinsky would run an incredible jumping mouse circus, not be a vaguely crazy man trying to create a jumping mouse circus (I say with love). And the pair of Miriam and April would be elegant world famous actresses, not two washed up has-beens (I say with love). But you know what? This is EXACTLY what they are in the Other World! The fairytale versions of themselves that is meant to be exactly what Coraline wants. And just like the change in design for Bobinsky in the Other World, Miriam and April get similar beautifications.

Now they’re as pretty as any fairytale princess with a waistline to match, because that’s the “better” version of this isn’t it? Except it’s not real. It’s a lie, meant to entrap you and keep you from having a good REAL life. I sort of love that about this film.

18)

Coraline [after Other Mother asks her to get her father]: “You mean my other father?”

Other Mother: “You’re better father, dear.”

Red flag! Red flag! That’s a creepy thing to say Other Mother! (It is also here when we start noticing the fakeness of Other Mother’s nice voice.)

19) I keep mentioning how you can detect a slight hint of fakeness in Other Mother’s face. The hint is not so slight in Other Father’s voice. There’s nothing real there, nothing honest. Just fake honey that’s meant to entice Coraline. And I think that’s because Other Mother is the mastermind and she’s making Other Father BE like that. It’s a nice choice on the part of the filmmakers and actor John Hodgman I think.

20)

Other Mother [about Other ‘Silent’ Wybie]: “I thought you’d like him more if he spoke a little less. So I fixed him.”

If anyone says they “fixed” a person, turn around and run like crazy away. That’s creepy.

21) Hmm, wonder which of her parents Coraline takes after…

Mom: “I did not call [Mr. Bobinsky] crazy, Coraline. He’s drunk.”

22) The. Freaking. CAT!!!!

Can I just say first and foremost: I love Keith David. Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog is my favorite Disney villain of all time in no small part because of Keith David’s voice over work as the character. And his role as The Cat is just as good. I love The Cat, which is saying a lot because I’m a dog person. David is able to work with the writing and make the character both wise and mischievous but in a unique, dark, sarcastic way. He’s also the first hint of trouble and the only character other than Coraline to travel between worlds. The animators do an excellent job making sure The Cat’s characterization is clear and consistent, even when he can’t speak in the real world. He’s an excellent addition to the film and a wonderful companion to our hero.

23) Everything gets real freaky real fast.

Right after Other Mother asks to put buttons in Coraline’s eyes (or, more accurately, REPLACE her eyes with buttons) this film turns into a horror film. Full on Stephen King, Poltergeist, “Stranger Things” horror! (Not that I’ve seen or read any of those things because I scare too easily.) And it is born not from jump scares or gore but from tone. The atmosphere becomes notably chilly and ominous and everything just becomes so FREAKY. THAT is why I think this is Henry Selick’s magnum opus. Because he can be as scary as he want to be!

24) For me, one of the most powerful scenes in the movie is when Coraline walks around Other World.

The simple decision to have her walk through a white abyss then find herself back in the Other World the Other Mother created just really works for me. It’s a simple yet elegant concept.

25) Other Mother’s truer form (her true form comes later).

This is when Teri Hatcher and Other Mother start really shining as villains. There is still an attempt to be motherly, to be warm, but the creepy factor is turned up. There’s a sick playfulness there at times as well as terrifying anger. But this form is most marked by the cold reservedness. The chilling tones the Other Mother uses when taking to Coraline about the game they’re going to play. It’s crazy freaky and I love it for that!

26) There is no scene quite as haunting or quite as sad as when Coraline talks with the ghost kids.

Through its use of haunting visuals, eerie sound design, excellent writing, and top notch voice acting from the child actors, this one scene tells you perfectly what exactly the stakes are for this film. What exactly will happen to Coraline if she can’t succeed. And it’s terrifying.

27) I did not remember this line from before and the way Coraline describes the ghost kids to Wybie had me laughing my butt off.

Coraline [about the doll]: “It used to look like this pioneer girl, then Huck Finn Junior, then this ‘Little Rascals’ chick with hair ribbons…”

I don’t know why, but something about hearing her call the kid, “Huck Finn Junior,” is just wildly funny to me.

28) The entire idea of the eyes of the dead children being hidden in the “three wonders” Other Mother crafted for Coraline is not only an excellent way of juxtaposing some of the dream like imagery from earlier with its now nightmarish quality, but it also gives plot relevance to scenes which could have easily just been entertaining and excellent eye candy (Bobinsky’s circus, the garden, and the theater scene). It helps push the writing of this film from good to great.

29) So Coraline thinks she has lost her game with Other Mother and she’s going to end up like the ghost children, when a dead rat with the last eye falls in front of her and The Cat shows up.

The Cat: “I think I’ve mentioned that I don’t like rats at the best of times.”

Coraline: “You may have mentioned it.”

I love these guys.

30) Can we just take a second to appreciate how incredibly frightening Other Mother’s true form is?

Teri Hatcher gets to totally let lose as an actress with this final form of the Other Mother. There’s no more fake niceness, no more hiding, no more tricks. Just sheer, terrifying villainy in all its glory. It’s so creepy and evil and I love it!

32) I find the web that Coraline falls into with Other Mother perhaps the most frightening visual of the whole film. I love it.

But the way Other Mother shouts after Coraline makes her way through the door is almost equally as terrifying to me. Just the desperation and madness in her voice gives me chills.

Other Mother: “Don’t leave me! Don’t leave me! I’ll die without you!”

33) It is a classic rule of suspense, an almost Hitchcockian rule (although I don’t think he invented it), that the story is never over when you think it is.

The entire final “battle” with Other Mother’s disembodied hand, how it drags Coraline away, how Wybie has to come and save the day but it still keeps going, is all a great final horror movie moment. Just the creeping crawly uncatchable-ness of a spider and how you have to work really hard to squash it. I love that.

34) The final scene of the film resolves the visual conflict Coraline was having with the real world. Everything - hear parents, the neighbors, the flowers - is a bit brighter. A bit closer to her but not so perfectly as the Other World. Things are resolved, but everything is still in the real world. Everything is still honest and it may not be perfect, but it is a happy ending.

It has been a while since I’ve watched Coraline so in all honesty I forgot how good it was. It is an excellent piece of not only animated filmmaking but filmmaking period. The visuals and imagination is incredible, it is truly frightening at times through its use of atmosphere and (again) the visuals at hand, the writing is top notch - ESPECIALLY when it comes to our titular lead - and the voice acting is there to match (Hatcher and Fanning being the clear standouts). It is an incredible film I think everyone should see. It’s just that good.

The Reid Effect

Requested by @21lanes: Reid and the Reader have been best friends for years, and she harbors a secret crush on him. When he starts seeing someone else, she’s jealous, but when he asks for her help in surprising his new girlfriend, all hell breaks loose.

It’s not fair, the effect Spencer Reid as on her. Her heart rate speeds up, her palms sweat, the air feels too warm, and she immediately forgets whatever else she was supposed to be thinking about the moment he walks into view. Similar symptoms occur at the sound of his voice, or when she receives a text from him, and of course when he appears unbidden in her mind. No, it’s not fair. And yet, she can never bring herself to mind much when he makes her feel so good.

They met at a criminology conference in DC. As a mystery writer, she wanted to do some in-depth research, and while she left with new material for her book, she also left with a new friend. Spencer sparked her interest almost immediately, and they became fast friends. Even from the start, he had a way of making her feel comfortable and putting her at ease. For three years he was her best friend – and still is – but last year something shifted, and one day she looked at him and realized what she felt for him went so much deeper than friendship. That’s when it began, that nervous fluttering and anxious happiness. It took weeks for her to realize what she felt for him was love, and she’s never been able to admit it out loud.

What if he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings? What if it ruins their friendship? She can’t imagine not having him in her life, even if it means never acting on her feelings. And yet, when he smiles at her, the rest of the world slips away. Does he even realize it, the effect he has on her?

Zig x MC - A Playlist

Background Info: In the spirit of slowly returning to sharing things with the world, I thought I’d post the playlist that I’ve spent approximately one month procrastinating on diligently working on. I’m not completely satisfied with the blurbs, so I will definitely come back (after exams *cries*) to edit.

Started as a 30 song playlist, and cut down to 8 tracks. All the highs and lows of our entire The Freshman Book 3 relationship with Zig, with lots of angst and introspection. Some songs pertain to Zig x MC; others to each individual character.

Photos taken from Pexels, and edited by me in Photoshop. Hope you enjoy listening! 💕 Click on each song title for the link. I highly recommend listening to each song while looking at the visuals, lyrics, and analysis. 😉

1) “Heart Out” The 1975
An upbeat, atmospheric alt rock anthem to teenage love, personal issues, and monotony.

And once we started having friends round
You created a television of your mouth
—–
You got something to say
Why don’t you speak it aloud, instead of living in your head?
It’s always the same
Why don’t you take your heart out, instead of living in your head?
—–
It’s just you and I tonight
Why don’t you figure your heart out?

We are reeling from suitemate drama and uncertainty when we stumble upon the enigmatic barista at the Hartfeld coffee shop. He shoots us knowing smirks, flirtatious remarks, and oh, it is working.

The curve of his half smile, the curl of his deep hair, the heat of his toffee-warm skin washes over us. Risk is nothing when there’s endless possibilities in his gaze.

The start of the quarter is the perfect time to step away from the televisions (or books) inside our minds and take risks, to ground ourselves in new realities. Zig is something new, and very real.

2) “Smoke Filled Room” Mako
A tropical, uplifting EDM track about the unstoppable girl who walks into chaos with her chin held high.

Isn’t it a little late?
Shouldn’t you fly away?
—–
Take a step around the room
And every head keeps turning too
Little dove, you fight ‘em back
Show ‘em you’re so much more than that
—–
Walk into a smoke filled room.
Oh no one could keep their eyes off you.
Have a little drink or two
Oh how could you be that girl I knew?

Soaring vocals brim with adrenaline, courage, and tenderness. That night, we head out into a strange world of dusky romances and dangerous people. Yet somehow, we always prove our past selves wrong.

Fragile. We walk into the Gutter Kitten’s crowded show only to be met with icy stares (and ice queens). We stand our ground, telling off the rude band members and turning up the charm to an 11 with our coffeeshop cutie. We fight ‘em all back.

Magnetic. In our “little black dress” at Madison’s birthday party, Zig is transfixed. He craves complexity, the satisfaction of stripping apart a problem layer by layer. Our fire, our loyalty, our three dimensionality captivates this lover of permutations, logic. In the smoky magic of our late night bar escapade, he takes us apart. Slowly. Tenderly.

3) “Livewire” Oh Wonder
A poignant, sparse piano and beat-driven ballad, contemplating two individuals who have become intertwined.

Counting my losses as I let them go.
Heavy the water as I sink below.
—–
I’ve been pretending all my shots are blown.
Cover my heart up, never let it show.
I’m shaking it off to find a higher low.
—–
So hold me when I fall away from the lines.
When I’m losing it all, when I’m wasting the light.
And hold me when I put my heart in your hands.
—–
Oh, won’t you be my livewire?
Make me feel like I’m set on fire.

Covering up hearts, igniting fires, and letting walls down: how fitting that the themes here tie in with those of the other songs. As the relentless yearning to explore one another in dimly lit rooms and memorize each other’s complexities simmers down, our relationship spins into something deeper.

Grazing touches and gentle murmurs become even more fleeting, soft. When we hold each other tightly, slight frame on top of strong, sturdy, in the backseat of his old car, we realize that somehow within the span of weeks, we’ve become inseparable.

His confessions topple our own walls. As the night goes on, we mold ourselves into each other. Our dependence on one another is intoxicating.

4) “Breaking the Habit” Linkin Park
A hypnotic, downtempo rock song that depicts the gritty reality of addiction, dangerous habits, and resentment.

Memories consume
Like opening the wound
I’m picking me apart again
—–
Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
—–
I’ll paint it on the walls
Cause I’m the one at fault
—–
I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
So, I’m breaking the habit tonight

Things begin to spin out of control. One moment, he’s brittle, too quick to snap, to accuse others of false play, to push them away. In a split second, he’s soft again, murmuring gentle reassurances and apologies.

We cannot understand his volatility. Fresh from the burn of an unfair, one-sided fight, we crack under the pressure. Everything gushes out.

The last thing we see is his back, taut with hard-earned, unwanted strength, tense with years of the strain of helplessness as his loved ones are damaged permanently. He has been cornered for so much of his life that running is a luxury.

For him, the anger gnaws and carves away at his insides. All his adrenaline, his sadness, his quick temper feeds the addictive kick. He knows no existence without it. For us, everything dries up. What hurts more, his leaving, or the ease, the relief, with which he leaves? We sink into the deep, because we don’t know if he’ll be coming back. If he even wants to.

What we don’t know if that he’s the one tearing himself apart again.

5) “Nothing” The Script
A stricken, pop rock ballad lamenting a damaged relationship and one man’s anguish.

Oh, sometimes love’s intoxicating.
Oh, you’re coming down, your hands are shaking.
When you realize there’s no one waiting.
—–
Cause I’m shouting your name all over town.
I’m swearing if I go there now.
I could change her mind turn it all around.
—–
So I, dialed her number and confessed to her
I’m still in love, but all I heard
Was nothing.
—–
I wanted words, but all I heard was nothing.

We did not get the chance to see Zig’s perspective after MC leaves for California. For me, this song fills in the blank spaces. I wonder what emotions must have been running through his mind. Resentment? Regret? I imagine him playing the fight over and over again, and beating himself up for lashing out.

We know that whatever he felt, it was strong enough to compel him to dial MC’s number–and, to be completely crushed when she ignored his call. It was the final straw: the confirmation that MC did not care about him. Her silence hurt infinitely more than a punch in the face. And so, the walls go up. He hunkers himself down behind defensiveness once again.

But to finally find someone who loved him for who he was, and to lose her in an instant, stings. He knows that things could have gone differently.

6) “Poison” luhx.
A stirring, indie and electronica track about apprehension, toxic relationships and choices, and the road to self-forgiveness.

I’ve been on either side of letting someone down and
I don’t know which one is worse
—–
Your toxin takes its time to settle in
When you said how much my skin reminded of home
Time seemed to numb my sins
—–
I laid down all my walls so you could lay here next to me
I know now…
—–
Too much of anything is poison
And it’s laced upon your lips
But the cure is in the venom, so I keep on coming back
My soul is stained with your poison

Admittedly, this toxic relationship is a bit too dark for our reunion. Yet, there is something promising about the song’s raw honesty.  It speaks of newfound wisdom, awareness, all qualities that make for a future of healing. “Poison” then captures Zig’s relationship with his past, his demons, and his journey to self acceptance.

Anger was Zig’s poison. It gave him what justification he needed to hate the world that dealt him this hand, to fight back against bullies, to have tasted and now expect rejection, and to avoid disappointment by putting up barriers around all of his relationships. In time, his numbness to his own aspirations became part of him.

Too much anger, however, and everything crashed. Inside, all he wanted was to be free. To believe in himself and his dreams once again. When he first met us in the coffee shop, he caught a glimpse of that brimming courage he once had, many years ago.

He fears that he is broken beyond repair. Perhaps this anger is now laced within his veins, toxic vines twisting around his heart, skin stained with bitter rejection.

There is beauty in his fear and newfound awareness. We are hopeful.

7) “Love Somebody” Ta-Ku ft. Wafia
An evocative, soulful indie-edm ballad and duet whose lyrics speak of a relationship on the mend.

Darling understand, my faith wavers when I can’t see the end
And I know you truly believe that our love will keep us from the edge
—–
I know we’ll never get it right
We only ever seem to fight
Anyone else would walk away
When you love somebody then you stay

The end-of-the-quarter dance dazzles with the promise of new beginnings. To our joy, Zig is about to embark on his college journey! And, amid blushing and stammering confessions, he’ll do so with us–his favorite girl–by his side.

Under the blossoms of the fairy light-strung cherry trees, we twirl about on the dance floor, hearts light and gazes warm. He can’t stop staring at us, but this time, he knows that we’re his. And he, ours.

The future can come with all that it brings. As his hands make their home on our waist, we are content to press our face into his broad shoulder and just breathe. His hope is sweet as the air.

8) “Arrest Me” Shy Girls ft. Tei Shi
A sultry, electronica ode to wandering hands, the playful battle for dominance, and waves of pleasure.

You got me tripping on my walk like I’m a novice.
Something about you on the top, if I’m honest
Running in circles around me, cuz you know I love it
—–
I’m gonna let you tie me up tonight
And you can read my rights, if that’s alright
I’ll loosen up your ropes and let you bite
I wanna feel your touch
—–
(Arrest Me)

Like our bedroom escapade, this lush, achingly sexy track needs no explanation. Teasing, probing, begging. Surrendering and asserting have never tasted so perfectly together.

Zig makes us crave something deeper, almost animalistic, and we can’t control the hitch of our breath when he crumbles under our touch. How is it that we render him speechless in the coffeehouse, in the car, under the night sky, on our bed, one body pressing into the other, moans echoing against the walls?

There is heat everywhere. His gaze smolders, sends one quake after another shuddering through our pinned frame.

After, we lay together, nestled together among the bedsheets, his arm still draped over us. His hands feel rough, but his caresses gentle. As much as we love the storm, we relish the calm. The steady rising of his chest, his soft snore, almost childlike, as we drift away.

Whenever I make playlists for characters or stories, I always try to base the songs off of the feeling, rather than the actual lyrics. “Smoke Filled Room” and “Poison” felt the most ‘Zig’ to me; “Heart Out” and “Arrest Me,” the least. Regardless, I hope you liked my rambling musics and sound bites! Now back to my exam preparation… 😭

6. Serenade // Nurseydex

« {Part 6 of my Valentine’s collection.} »

a/n: Musician!Dex AU where they both still go to Samwell, but they don’t play hockey. Dex plays guitar and Nursey is a poet. Enjoy!

There were lots of downsides to living in the dorms. Communal bathrooms were one. Then there was the shared kitchen, the drunk freshmen tramping through the hallways at 3 AM, and dealing with roommates. One of the things that Derek didn’t mind, however, was being close to the dorm’s practice rooms.

The practice rooms were small supposedly sound-proof rooms were dorm residents could practice musical instruments without disturbing their neighbors. It was a good idea, theoretically—except whoever had designed he building hadn’t apparently had a very good understanding of acoustics. Not only were the walls of every dorm room deplorably thin (Derek really shouldn’t have this good of an idea of how often his neighbor got laid), but the practice rooms were also not nearly as “sound proof” as advertised.

Derek’s dorm room was right above his building’s practice rooms. There were a lot of people who complained about the noise, but Derek found himself enjoying the quiet melodies that leaked up from the floor below him most evenings. It wasn’t like the sound was keeping him awake—the practice rooms were closed after eleven, and Derek was never asleep before midnight.

Tonight was an unusually quiet night. Someone had been practicing Bach on the clarinet a couple hours ago, but since then the floor below had been silent. It was starting to put Derek on edge. He had two different poetry assignments to finish tonight, and the words just weren’t coming to him. Nothing he wrote down seemed worth keeping.

And then, like a Godsend, there was music—a guitar.

anonymous asked:

who is pete wentz writing songs about?

mikey way. okay, here we go.

so, in the summer of 05 is when most people think it started because fob and mcr played warped together, but, they had also played the year before and thats when i think it started. as many know, pete single handedly wrote the entirety of from under the cork tree, which was released may 3rd of 2005, which means he had been writing some of it the previous summer. most of the album is quite cheery, depicting the emotions of someone who is battling some darker force within themselves, but is also experiencing a happiness from someone else they dont think they deserve or should have (short version: an emo is in love). also, theres the parallel between dance dance and favorite record- dance dance depicts a literal and emotional dance, and then in favorite record you have “i cant remember just how to forget the way we danced”. so, based on research and educated opinion, i believe that the petekey fling started in 04.

then, the next summer both bands were again picked for warped, which only intnsified the relationship. after weeks of spending excessive time with each other and attending each others shows, the media took notice. in an interview that summer, when asked about it he responded “me and pete wentz arent dating. we are both heterosexual males… sort of… maybe… umm… next!”. on may 16, 2005 mikey was spotted at a fueled by ramen show watching fob at house of blues wearing a white jacket that allegedly belonged to pete. a few days later, pete posted a list on live journal of things that get him hot and bothered. on taht list were a.having a crush on a person i speak to nearly every day and b.white denim jackets….

on tuesday, june 28, 2005, pete posted the following on livejournal: “Amazing New Mexico sunset. im hanging on a bridge with my friend mikey from my chem. its all orange and pink above us. we went to another water park again. i love high fives again. totally back in love.” on july fourth he posted an entry that ended with “hot and miserable but totally back in love”. on july 15 he posted “Though I am over hearing your thoughts on haircuts and pants. I’m over us trying to be perfect tens for your little eyes. We don’t care what you think of us. Listen to a song and time your heartbeat. Let it be okay to fall asleep slow tonight. Think about a good friend. Think about god. Think about death. Think about someone elses hand clumsily on your belt in the dark. Think it will be okay. No more rants. No more poetry. Not tonight. True love for the believers”. on july 17 he posted “wrote you a goodbye note (you just wrote me off) on your arm when you passed out. bestfriends, exfriends- better off as lovers not the other way around. racing through the city in the back of yellow checkered cars. the takeoffs are the worst but the skin from your shoulder to your ear makes it all worth it. and im sorry the way my moods flicker on and off like old light on your porch, but i know you wouldn’t have it any other way. sneaking in your window instead of out. the way you hold a cigarette cause you don’t know what to do with your hands when we are sitting this close. the way the waists of pants feel better at the ankles. the way you always were my best excuse for calling in sick on everyone else. i miss you”. which later became the song bang the doldrums, which was origionally titled summer of like (pete mentioned this in a rolling stones interview), which is now what fans call the relationship between pete and mikey in 05.

during that summer, fans claimed that mikey and pete didnt want to be photographed together, which is kind of suspicious…. but there are a few circulating the internet, and quite a few of mikey wearing clandestine (petes clothing line). at this time it was also common for fob and mcr to trade band members, mikey would play bass for fob so pete could take his mic into the crowd. pete also frequently watched mikey play with the stupidest smile on his face….

there are also fan reports of them being seen together. “ at my warped date i got there early in the morning and hung out by the fob bus because i wanted to get a pic with patrick and around 10 am the door opened and a very tired looking mikey stepped off with pete right behind him and they appeared to be holding hands until they saw the people around and they both refused to have their pictures taken together ”. and “during Fall Out Boy’s set (they were one of the closing bands that night) they dedicated one of the songs to Mikey, who was watching from the side of the stage. Pete said, “This song is about revenge. Right, Mikey? Revenge!” Mikey smiled and nodded, and during “Grand Theft Autumn/Where is Your Boy” he mouthed along to all the words.”

pete also posted at one point “i wish you were my bass, not just my friend”. on august 19 he posted “ Warped tour was fun. Since being home I remembered that showering and sleeping are fun too. My real feelings on the sunburst bass. I loved that thing. But then it started cheating on me with mikey way. I had to hit it. Its not my fault- spousal abuse is an ugly thing. I’m in therapy that includes playing lots of warcraft online. Writing messages on your arm for someone to see at a show is the new away message - stealing peoples real diary is the new livejournal”.

on september 4, pete posted “on the getaway car, the rush of blood to the head: it’s strange to find myself again back at the feelings of the blue cover after going through the red and the gold. its kind of always like that. i am sorry if i am not making any sense. but everybody likes to take chances and make bets. i always put my money on the longshots. and no matter where my head was in the world i always dreamed of waking up next to the biggest brown eyes i have ever seen/’meandyouunderneaththehoneymoon’. “go back to what it meant back then”: and you imagine yourself moving deep into the summer and disappearing, and for me it was always with you. and then things got crazy. you stopped calling me back. i stopped trying to call but not in my head. and then you got malicious but i’m guessing only because you learned from the best- take back your taste and all. i never thought it would be just me again. but that’s okay. we’re gonna hole up and wait it out. i feel like i can see for the first time, like i was born just in the last minute. wake me up. baby boy, you’re gonna be okay. hearts between our knees sticking to the summer sheets. are you catching my drift…. its gonna be alright. your love would be hell but its just not hot enough baby.” (Note… baby BOY)

after petes nudes were leaked, hey chris wrote him a public letter which contained the following: “you know the friends i have and you know how we feel about loyalty. you know who im talking about and you know they’re not happy either.” and shortly after chris posted pic of him and mikey saying he’d “found new love”

the summer of 06, peter once again had some interesting things to say. on july 7 he posted “im so sorry, but not really. (‘straighten up and die right’) i said i want to be rebuilt like a frank lloyd wright only without all of the water damage. or painted over like a monet only less blurry. she said “no, youre something different”. like what? “something better”. it gave me the rush of warm blood like you see in cartoon dogs right before their eyes pop out and all of the bells go off. my head is spinning like a car off of an icy guardrail. show me what you are made of. your eyes were always rolling but youd tilt your head so they were somehow always still stuck on me (have your cake and eat it too). i feel safe but not like a bet more like the way mothers feel when the lock the car doors in bad neighborhoods. i am blue waves across the red rootlike veins in the bodies drawn flat in medical books. i wonder at the way that someone can write thousands and thousands of pages about my insides. when i met you i gave you a name- not your own- but in my head so i wouldnt ever mix you up with anyone so ordinary- i cant tell you- but to me it meant salvation. you only wanted reaction. but i cant be bothered. not anymore. ill see you in the spring. first pew on the left. wear your white veil and dont forget the words. warped tour. sun drenched days. bestfriends. new roads. so long salvation. dont worry your pretty little heads. i am sleeping safe tonight.” then the next day, on the 8th, he posted “the fraternal order of the handsome boy. ive been watching you from afar. my breath on the inside window as you walk in from the carcandy caned lies in red and white against clashing patterns bending in and out of understanding. ”youre the stranger ive been dreaming of”, stranger than any ive ever known. love through a telescopic lens. when the air is clear i can see how perfect you are for me. late at night when the city sleeps i cast a spell on you to make you think of me the very same way i think of you. i only love how the words feel in my head when i write them. fireworks over the valley. how can i tell you i gut people for a living. that everything you say is likely to end up as evidence when i rewrite history. over and over again. how everything you do reminds me of something else, someone else. how i get paid to be humble and arrogant at the same time,to be chased and never caught. that i just want to stay up late and wake up early to talk to you. that i want to show you all of my jealousy and insecurity and have you not care. youre like a light switch and i just want to turn you on and watch them all shrink away. the words come out of my fingertips on impulse. it is instinct. my head cant keep up. i envy the comatose. i admire the bedridden. i am addicted to the way i feel when i think of you. ”im blowing smoke rings around the moon….” i wish i was the exact opposite of how the world knows me.”

then, there is infinity on high, which is basically completely about mikey (especially bang the doldrums, because it was born on live journal right after that summer of like…) and ab/ap, due to the constant reiteration of a past love, my favorite being fourth of july with “you are my favorite what if, you are my best i’ll never know”

also othe fact that neither of them can hold a true relationship with women without it ending badly. perhaps because there is someone out there that they are simply destined to be with….

so yeah. pete wentz writes a lot of his music about mikey way.

Exo react to you being excited for Valentines Day

My first exo post! Fun fact exo was the first kpop band I ever stanned. Thanks to the person who requested this. I hope you guys enjoy it - Em xx

Minseok: Xiumin being quite shy would find your excitement quite cute but a bit overwhelming, he would laugh. “Calm down jagi,” But on the actual day he would have a huge teddy and lots of chocolates to give to you to show you he cared.

Junmyeon: “Ah not this again, every year. Every year!” Just because people think I’m rich doesn’t mean I can buy five thousand valentines presents for you jagi! I’m twenty five, I’m to old for this.” But much like Xiumin on the actual day he would make it very special.

Yixing: I think Lay would be just as into Valentines day is you. Because it is cute like him. When he realised how excited you were he would sit with you and plan out what you guys were going to do together to make it special.

Baekhyun: He would keep making subtle hints as to what he had planned to make you even more excited. You would ask him what he was gonna do but he wouldn’t say in some odd attempt to be sexily mysterious. “I can’t tell you y/n, that would ruin my wonderful surprise.” He would have a stupid grin all the while.

Jongdae: He would find your constant excited ramblings about it amusing and would try to tease you about it because he was nice like that. “Who said I was doing anything for you on Valentines day. I am a busy man Jagiya!” But ultimately he would do something nice because he loved you. (Get you a guy that looks at you the way Chen looks at Suho)

Chanyeol: ‘I haven’t got time for this incessant rambling see you on valentines day baby!” On the day he would be great, before hand he was to busy dealing with Chanyeol things.

Kyungsoo:  He would find it very cute. “Im glad you are excited about Valentines day. Its a day to celebrate us and we are the best thing that ever happened in my life so thats worth celebrating.”

Jongin: “I’m happy your excited, I will receive my payment now for how great I will make Valentines day for us. I take payment in kisses did you know?”

Band Of Brothers Preference

Can you do the reader or the guys distancing themselves from being with them? Like the slow dancing one? Gifs please! Requested by Anon

Richard Winters:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Winters was always being selfless and you began to worry that would the end of him. What was the point of loving someone if there was a huge chance you could lose them at any given moment? That just wasn’t something your heart could take. But once he heard your reasoning he took you aside and promised you that he was never going to leave your side no matter what happens. He was going to be there.

Lewis Nixon:

Who distances themselves: him from you

What were you trying to do being with him? He was only gonna end up hurting you or disappointing you, he thought. When you entered the room he would leave immediately or try to look busy to stop involving you in his life. Once you approached him about it he just let it spill, he thought you deserved alot more. Safe to say, you stayed around to make sure you proved just how amazing her was to him.

Carwood Lipton:

Who distances themselves: you from him

When Lip loves he loves wholeheartedly and he loves everyone. So when you continually declined his offers or just waved him off it just made him want to know why even more. Lipton was not one to let go off people, he was going to make sure he got over those walls that you kept so tightly around your heart and he was going to stay there.

Denver “Bull” Randleman:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Did you think you could just walk away from him? Aw, that’s funny. Bull would not let that happen, let alone you even think about it. You try to do it subtly but he catches on quick and pulls you aside making sure to take every bad thought out of your mind and let you know that after all this, you’re gonna be stuck with him.

Joe Toye:

Who distances themselves: him from you

What’s the point in getting to know someone who can screw you over? Or worse, someone who can just die and leave you alone. Toye was known to be someone who didn’t open up but you wouldn’t allow that. You pushed and pushed and pushed until he finally snapped. He didn’t want another person in his life because he didn’t want the hurt that came with it. And if you knew more about him, he would become attached to you and that itself was the worst pain. There was no thing he made clear though. That was that if you knew him and truy knew him, you would have to stay, and that wasn’t even the slightest of problems for you.

George Luz:

Who distances themselves: you from him

If there is one thing everyone knows about George Luz, that is that he always cares. Doesn’t matter who it is or what they do, you deserve to be happy. And you were someone he really wanted to be happy, more than anyone. Luz doesn’t shy away from anything so you better believe he up and calls you out on it as soon as he knows for sure whats going on. He makes it a point to look you in the eye and tell you he is going to stick around until you open up to him and nothing that you do will change it.

Eugene Roe:

Who distances themselves: him from you

Roe would not speak a single word you let alone even look in your direction. That only made you want to get to know him more. When there was a time you were both alone, you let it slip, ‘I’m not going not hurt you.’ He cleared his throat explaining that he didn’t want to be the one to see you get hurt. It was sweet honestly but that wasn’t a valid reason by you. ‘It’s okay. Because if I do get hurt, I know who’s gonna save me.”

Joseph Liebgott:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Lieb had his eyes on you and he would literally follow you everywhere. He never realized it truly bothered you until you called your temporary or just another girl. The next time you were together, he stood up in front of everyone pronouncing his love for you. The thing is, he was already attached. And he knew what he wanted. You and only you for a long time.

Lynn “Buck” Compton:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Buck was liked by everyone and always tried to be even with everything he had been through. He deserved something constant something whole in his life and you just didn’t believe that was you. Those words broke Compton’s heart because somehow you didn’t see all his cracks and how you were the only thing that made HIM feel ‘whole’.

Donald Malarkey:

Who distances themselves: him from you

This sweet thing craves acknowledgement but there is also a chance that things can go wrong. With everything that happened, he only needed one thing to go right. What’s the point in rolling that dice again though? Better to be alone and content than together and then heartbroken. Soon that became frustrated, you forcefully had to make Malarkey be around you and grabbed onto him. ‘I’m here. I’m always gonna be here, no matter what you do. So stop trying.’ That’s all he needed to hear.

Warren “Skip” Muck:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Skip is such a sap oml. Ignore him all you want, you will still find flowers, love notes, hugs, compliments, etc., all coming your way. He doesn’t give up easy or with you, at all. In the hell he is in, you’re the only thing that makes him feel safe.

Bill Guarnere:

Who distances themselves: him from you

Aww this giant teddy bear. BIll gets hooked super easily so once you walked in he was like “abort abort abOrT”. One thing that scared Bill was depending on people and not having them there one day. Being away at war, he only thinks about you but God knows what you’re thinking about he just hopes it’s him. He needs reassurance every once in a while to know you’re the only one for him.

Darrell “Shifty” Powers:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Shifty would not let you go, not even for a second. If you’re what he wants, he will get you. He’s one of those guys who is super sweet constantly and soooo polite about it, how could you tell him no? He’s also super upfront, he will tell you straight up, he will get you. no if’s and’s or but’s.

Frank Perconte:

Who distances themselves: you from him

You want to keep your distance? Can’t do that if he’s everywhere you go. *inserts meme guy* But seriously Perco will make sure he is always around you, at some point you’re gonna have to open up. He’s so stubborn, you will give up before he does I can promise you that. Frank also follows you like a lost pupper looking for some love and affection.

Ronald Speirs:

Who distances themselves: him from you

He will not get close to you. He will not open up to you. He will not lose you. That’s what goes through Speirs’ mind. He figured everyone else in the company tries to avoid him, if he’s rude to you maybe you’ll just avoid him too and he won’t have to worry about it. If anything, it only intrigued you more which really worried him. Everyone noticed how he began to snap at you easier and even the officers began to suspect something. If you hated him, he couldn’t catch feelings. But soon enough you crawled right under his skin and he could not even think about being without you.

Edward “Babe” Heffron:

Who distances themselves: him from you

Poor bean has been abandoned too often. babe doesn’t have much regard for himself, but you saw the world in him. He didn’t regard himself as much of a suitor or someone people are interested in. Why would he want someone to be with him if there’s a chance they could find better?

Chuck Grant:

Who distances themselves: him from you

Chuck has this whole reputation of flirting but it terrified him to have something real. Once things are real then they can be destroyed and more than anything he doesn’t want the pain of being destroyed. He will not give anyone the opportunity to hurt him. Pick at him, find out quirks, make a joke, compliment him. Small things slip out and before he knows it, Grant has created so much space for someone he didn’t want around in the first place.

Floyd Talbert:

Who distances themselves: you from him

Everyone knows how Tab can be. His little flirty moves, his suggestive comments, it’s all really in fun until he finds someone who really peaks his interest. and not just their body no, their mind, their movements, their banters. It’s stuff that makes him want to know every part of someone. But of course if you don’t know that side of him, being with Tab is something really hard to imagine. But if there’s one thing he tries to get across its that, ‘Honey, I’m gonna be the person who makes sure you don’t get hurt again.’

David Webster:

Who distances themselves: him from you

If you love people you have more to lose. That’s how he sees it. Web has witnessed his closest friends get wounded and it hurt like hell. One more person was not worth it, he was not meant to fall for you and did his best not to. But we all know this doe-eyed boy. Look at him once with those innocent eyes and wide smile and damn it. He’s a fool for you.

Harry Welsh:

Who distances themselves: you from him

This hopeless romantic. He was always out there first and always in the way of danger. He doesn’t even worry about the matter, he is all smiles and grins when he sees you because he knows at some point you’ll be in his arms and everything between the both of you will be right. And everything before that won’t matter. He just has to wait.

Tyrion plays a little game of “Make up people’s lives”, and for you, the classic Assassin Bard. However the game goes a little awry when Jaime notices you acting suspicious, and someone ends up dead in the morning.

“That bard is an assassin.” Tyrion slurred, his cup wavering as he pointed at you relaxed on your perch, eyes closed enjoying your own sweet melody stringing from your finely crafted lute.

Jaime turned to the band and scoffed. “Is she now?”

“Oh yes! You can see it in her shoes, in her hands,” he wiggled his fingers for emphasis. “She’s got the eyes of a killer.”

The gala had been incredibly boring all afternoon, most people too afraid to be the first ones to leave as a show of political prowess. Jaime should have been doing the rounds, guarding his King, but what could his King be doing other than burying his face in some moxie woman’s bosom while he and his sister fume at the nerve. At the very least, Tyrion was the only person worth talking to and rightly entertaining about it, designing secret lives for everyone. And no doubt of course the sweet bard with a gentle smile was an assassin all along.

“In her shoes hm?”

Tyrion glared at the curled up toes of your brightly colored poulains, his slumped shoulders doing very little to stop him from tipping. “I don’t like those kind of shoes. They’re weird and…suspicious. Only the emptiest of hearts would wear shoes like that and not be ashamed.”

He then almost got dive-bombed by a migrating goose.

“Whoa! Not today, buddy,” he said from the shelter of a nearby shrub. “It’s too nice out for that.”

Once the goose stopped rustling through the branches of the shrub and flew off to reunite with its herd, Blaine emerged, grateful the motion of the branches hadn’t caused him to get pricked by any of the leaves. He’d seen the Big People barely even flinch when they accidentally got jabbed by one of the bushes, but for someone his size, a wound from a pricker bush could do some serious damage.

Blaine started heading for the edge of the Dalton grounds, where the woods were a little less well-maintained than they were at the front of the stately building. There were usually mushrooms growing in the more wild area, and he and his band were in need of a little more food in their stores before the winter hit. They should be safe, but after Trent had heard one of the students say an early snowstorm might be on its way, the Warblers knew they couldn’t be too careful.

“I hope the geese didn’t eat every - oh, good!” he said, clapping his hands together a couple of times when he reached the mushroom patch and saw that there was still plenty of food to be had. He started picking the mushrooms that looked small enough to carry yet big enough to be worth eating when he heard movement from behind him and whirled around to see-

hey i’m currently in the honors college at my university and here’s a list of things that i regret/am happy that i did in high school in relation to college. don’t mess up like i did!!!!!! heres my casual high school advice guide

  • take all honors and ap/ib classes, if you are able to (mentally/physically)!!! these look super rad. take all the honors classes you can, and ease your way into ap/ib classes. i personally don’t find honors classes much harder than regular classes, but every school is different. ap classes are, however, way harder than honors, in my opinion. i love ap classes though, cause, no matter your score on the test, it counts more towards your gpa!!!! you get an A in that and you are set, son. and ap classes count towards college credit!!! double whammy of awesomeness. by the time i started college, i had racked up enough ap credit to almost omit my freshman year. once again, super rad.
  • drop the clubs you don’t like!!! i truly wish i could go back in time and deck myself for signing up for crap like hosa since i have/had zero intention of goin into the medical field. i just wanted to have a pretty resume but!! you know what!!!!!! its not worth it!!!!!!! WHY WAS I IN HOSA!!!! but!! more importantly drop the clubs you feel pressured to be in. im so serious about this. i started out doing drama and band in middle school, and i felt obligated to do them until my senior year because my teachers and peers expected me to. what was i thinking!! i hated band (and cut class sometimes oops) and my school’s drama program was broken. i dreaded going to them, and i thought theyd look good on my college application. honestly? continuity looks good, but you dont need to stay in everything especially in your senior year. you’re allowed to drop what you hate. instead of signing up for a bunch of random crap to seem well-rounded, find what you enjoy and become dedicated to that.
  • don’t be friends with people you don’t like. im gonna be real with you and say that i wish i couldve trashed like a dozen people in high school that treated me like crap. but i went to a small school and was scared to. also i was pretty introverted/had social anxiety. (!!!!) even if you don’t have the courage to call someone out, don’t bother yourself with staying friends with them. it’s not worth it, and as soon as you graduate you’ll never talk to them again. don’t do this to yourself, drop their asses!!!
  • following that, you won’t be friends with your high school friends in college. well, some, but not near as many as you think. the people you consider your best friends may fade out of your life, and that’s fine. i’m still friends with about… 3… people from high school. what i’m saying is, don’t feel pressured to make a ton of friends, and focus on those 3 friends that you’ll still talk to. once again, don’t be friends with people you don’t like.
  • try your best to have a great gpa. i reallllllly messed up my freshman year with mental shit and etc, but i bounced back in my junior/senior year. its not too late to raise your gpa. those ap classes really help here. in the end, what colleges care about the most is probably gonna be your gpa and test scores. if you have a 3.5, it’s fine if you don’t have a million clubs on your application.
  • likewise, do your best on the sat/psat/act/etc. most colleges only require you to submit either your sat or act score. take them both, see what you like better, then focus on that one. i seriously bombed the sat, but got a 30 on the act without trying. i didnt need to retake it either, because i was….
  • realistic about my college prospects. would it be cool to go to yale? sure. was i gonna even apply? nah. my parents had done the prepaid college thing, and couldn’t afford to send me out of state or to a private school. so!! in-state i went. i’d known that i’d go to where i currently go to since sophomore year, and i was familiar with the entry requirements. the most prestigious of schools aren’t necessarily the best either, cause
  • you don’t need to go somewhere amazing for undergrad. that’s right i’m giving away the secret!!!! if you plan on pursuing a masters, which I recommend tbh depending on your field, then work your butt off in undergrad and have a great application for a masters program at a better school/program. you’ll have to take english and math wherever you go, so why pay 50k when you could pay 15k.
  • here’s another secret, your high school accomplishments won’t matter in college. it sucks but you’re starting from square one, friend. i say this because nobodys gonna give a crap if you played juliet in the school play, so only do what you like in high school. don’t force yourself into hosa (me…..) cause you think its impressive.
  • LEARN HOW TO WRITE!!!!!OMG!!! you will have to write a crap ton of essays for ap exams, college application essays, college papers, cover letters, etc. learn how to write well as soon as you can, because it will be useful for the rest of your life. a well-crafted essay could get you admission to college and a good cover letter could get you a job. I went from barely getting a B in English to being one of the best writers in the school. try your best to improve on even the smallest of assignments, and go to your english teacher for help.
  •  it’s ok to suck at stuff and mess up. i was an all A student for most of middle school, but late in 8th grade I had depression and an eating disorder–it destroyed my grades. i was crushed by pressure to perform until 10th grade, where something in my head just clicked, and i did a 180. you won’t be good at everything, and you can bounce back from mistakes. i always got c’s and b’s in math because i honestly hated it and sucked at it. i had horrible teachers, too. but that’s fine, cause I ended up being really good at english and history. you can always become a better student, whenever you decide to.
  • finally, relish your high school experience and be social. some of it will suck, but i guarantee that there will be moments you treasure. sometimes you’ll be crying in the parking lot, but then you’ll get 1st place in a competition and you’ll be smiling for weeks. one of my BIGGEST REGRETS is not being very social. i was very introverted and had anxiety, and i was the person who ran to the parking lot at the bell to get off of campus. i would rarely hang out with people and i’d just watch netflix and etc. don’t do that. no matter how hard it is, do your best to hang out with people. i always hated the lead-up to plans, but i rarely regretted going out when it was done. make as many memories as you can, and treasure them.

I came across this letter written by Jeff Mangum about why he stopped performing with Neutral Milk Hotel.  I found it really beautiful, so I thought I would share.

“i think its time that i made a few things clear.
first of all, i am not in hiding, as some have said. where i am i supposed to be hiding?
behind the coach? in the cat box? under the bed?

i wake up everyday, i walk out into the world and i say hello to the people i meet.
the sun shines, the birds sing, the dogs birth out of the old womans eyeball, the
afterbirth overwhelms me, swimming with strange creatures, etc. living in the great mystery
is enough for me right now.
also it has been said that i dont like people listening
to my music, that i dont like playing live, that i stopped playing because people heckled
me at my shows, called me names, etc. if you really think im that pathetic, then you should
burn my records, and forget about me. but its not like that. not that i thought every aspect
of being in a semi popular
rock band was totally healthy, but im not knocking it either. but when i hear people bitching about
being famous, i always wonder why they keep doing it. if you dont like doing interviews
anymore, then dont. its that easy.
but anyway, im getting off track here. what happened to me
comes down to two things.

1.immune system breakdown. i was getting sick every two months for a year, and finally in
the spring of 99 i got hepatitis and mono at the same time, which turned me into
a vomit tornado with yellow eyeballs for two months, and gave me chronic fatigue for the next
two years. which led to number two.
2.spiritual breakdown. this little nervous breakdown, which lasted about two years, was
one of the best things that ever happened to me. it turned out great in the end, even though
it was a living hell for a long time.
in our society, we are supposed to feel ashamed of ourselves when we breakdown,
were supposed to go to the shrink to “fix” the “problem”,
so that we can come out as smiling productive members of society.
what a load of crap.
we must live in the loneliest society on earth, one that has taken the spiritual
aspect out of becoming a healthy person.
in other cultures, spirituality, human
phycology, physical health and meditation are all one thing. you cant separate them into
compartments. i didnt know any of this a few years ago, and my breakdown forced me
to begin to see through the horrible mental boxes that our society imposes on everyone.
two years ago i was a mess, every belief i had was disintegrating, everything
i had based my life on seemed shaky. i was tired, confused, and i just didnt think
i could simply sing my way out of it this time. and i was right. the songs i did write
were confused, very dark and not anything i thought anyone needed to hear. they were
more for myself, to help me to work through my mental problems. so, doing shows seemed
inappropriate, since anything i would sing would instantly end up on the net, for
everyone to hear. im not knocking people sharing my music on the internet, but
at that point, it didnt seem right.

so where am i at now? well, all my belongings are in storage, and i am leaving for spain in a
week. dont know whats going to happen. life is better that way. my attitude has always been
to remain open to all possibilities. maybe i’ll write a song, a story, a tape piece,
learn meditation, capture a beautiful event on tape, make a friend, see something i’ve
never seen before. and if at some point, if it all adds up to be something worth
releasing to the world, i will do it gladly. i dont give a fuck if it
“tops aeroplane” or not. thats just another mental prison. anyone waiting for an album
to top the last one should look somewhere else, because you’ll inevitably be disappointed.

when i wrote aeroplane, i spent 90 percent of my time screaming nonsence
into my little tape recorder, or chopping up sounds with my sound blender, or
just making noise,
and 10 percent of my time writing songs. it was very liberating,
because i never thought about what i was doing, and a week before we went to record i didnt
even think we had a half finished album. but i didnt care. i figured if we went the studio,
and only recorded one finished song, then that would be fine. creating just one minute of
something inspiring is an incredibly fun thing to do. so next time you hear that neutral milk
is recording, dont get your hopes up. it may only be one minute of music.
and if i ever release my korena pang peices for you to
hear, you’ll soon find that
its just liberated dada to free the mind. if you want more neutral milk, dont buy it.
you’ll hate it. i for one love music that makes my brain freeze, like the shags, or art ensemble
or maybe some chanting and
banging and confusion from bolivia that makes me forget myself for awhile.
major organ was just a bunch of friends putting music together for fun. it was a project
that changed hands at least a dozen times, and most of the time you didnt even know who was working on it,and you never knew where it would go.
released mostly to inspire other dreamers and home recorders to do the same with there friends.
we weren’t trying to create a masterpiece. trying to do anything is the of death of creativity,
and if we can encourage people to not try, but to just do, then we have accomplished our goal.
the jittery joes show should be out in august or september. it was a show i did in 98 before going
to denver to record. i think the video footage makes it worthy of release, since lance bangs
did such a good job. we’re putting it out to encourage people to stop paying alot of money
for second generation live shows. but again, dont get your hopes up. its really not a big deal.

so thats it. thanks to everyone for listening to my music. now i need to forget myself again,
so you may not hear from me for awhile. forgetting yourself is freedom, and i need to be free.
happy travels. jeff”
