Disney Songs in German

Disney songs from some popular Disney films dubbed in german! Music is a brilliant way to immerse yourself in your target language, and what better way than the Disney way? Many of these songs are from our childhoods, so it’s some nice nostalgic immersion.

*The english titles next to the german is not necessarily a translation, but rather the english title. Also the year next to the title of the film is the year that the initial english film was released, not necessarily when it was released or dubbed in german.

Some notes: I apologize if your favourite Disney film or song didn’t make the list, I definitely didn’t get all of them. Maybe a part 2 is in order? Also, I tried my best to find videos that had subtitles and a translation, but unfortunately not all of them have it. You can always do a quick google search if you want the lyrics and/or english translation. Be sure to check the descriptions as well, some of them have the lyrics in there. Some videos are better or worse quality than others, but they’re all generally listenable.

I’d also like to give a huge thanks and credit to the creators who translated and subtitled these videos! They did all the work, afterall.

Enjoy!

Mulan (1998)

Pocahontas (1995)

Dornröschen [Sleeping Beauty] (1959)

Tarzan (1999)

Cinderella (1950)

Note: While the german name for ‘Cinderella’ is ‘Aschenputtel’, she goes by Cinderella in the german-dubbed Disney version. Aschenputtel is also an alternative title to the film.

Aristocats (1970)

Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge [Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs] (1937)

Note: Disney’s Snow White has been re-dubbed a couple times in german for some reason, so the particular year a song is from may differ from another. They’re all from the same movie though.

Arielle, die Meerjungfrau [The Little Mermaid] (1989)

Note: Same situation as Snow White.

Aladdin (1992)

Der König der Löwen [The Lion King] (1994)

Der König der Löwen 2 – Simbas Königreich [The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride] (1998)

Küss den Frosch [The Princess and the Frog] (2009)

Rapunzel – Neu Verföhnt [Tangled] (2010)

Die Eiskönigin – Völlig Unverfroren [Frozen] (2013)

Das Dschungelbuch [The Jungle Book] (1967)

Alice im Wunderland [Alice in Wonderland] (1951)

Hercules (1997)

Grabbing your third glass of cold, cheap champagne for the night, you laugh at a joke that Hercules had just told that wasn’t even funny. He seemed so enthusiastic about it that you couldn’t help it, but even sober, you couldn’t comprehend the punchline or how it was supposed to work out to be as funny as everyone made it sound like it was. You take a sip and walk off, trying to find the person who had dragged you here in the first place, Lafayette.

it was about half hour till people began arriving. i was in the kitchen helping ema bring out some finger foods. “so how’s auston been?” she asked breaking the silence. “he’s been good, was stressed during the off season” i laughed awkwardly although she nodded agreeing with me.

“tia!” was yelled from across the room. all i could see was the blonde hair of a litte girl running through. “hola bonita niña” (hi pretty girl) ema spoke in spanish to the little girl, she just smiled in response. “do you want anything to eat kayla?” ema asked and she nodded. ema brought kayla outside to the backyard for some food, i stayed in the kitchen to cut up some more vegetables since someone brought in an empty tray.

“i always thought a girl who knew her way around the kitchen was hot” i heard the deep voice that sounded all too familiar from behind me. i turned around and saw auston standing there with open arms. “where have you been?” he asked after i accepted his embrace. i took a look at the clock and saw i’ve been in here for forty five minutes.

It had been a particularly draining one, a case that involved human sacrifice and a much more rapid timeline than you were used to, and while you were glad that it was now relegated to the realm of case files, you weren’t off the hook just yet.

“Honestly,” you sigh as you turn from your laptop to face Spencer, “this guy kind of ruined my idea of a fun Halloween. I had visions of Rocky Horror, boatloads of candy, and fake blood before this case. But now, all I can think about is human sacrifice and real blood. It’s disturbing.”

“Initially, Halloween was celebrated on the one night between autumn and winter when the barrier between the living and the dead was thinnest and often involved rituals that included human sacrifice. So, if you think about it, that’s part of what Halloween really was. Not that I condone human sacrifice, of course,” Spencer informs you as he glances up from his case file.

(1/2) hello! i read that you guys aren't specialized in Asian history, but bc i couldn't find promising results from my search, i have to try and ask - in 17th century Japan, there were the Emperor and the shogun, the latter of which was a military leader and was often seen as the center of power instead of the Emperor, and i'm wondering how titles work with this system?

(2/2) i searched for Japanese honorifics throughout the history and there were terms like King/Princes if translated to English, but there wasn’t info on who those were addressed to. could the shogun also be called ‘King’? if so, would their sons (both by blood and by concubines) be called ‘Princes’? were the shogun and their family considered as royalties, monarchs, aristocrats, or etc.?

Sorry for the long wait and thank you for your patients!

First of I need to make a disclaimer! I’m not well versed in Japanese history (my knowledge is rudimentary) and I’m not very familiar with the culture or that good with the language. (My two years of studying Japanese 10 years ago doesn’t get me that far, really.) There’s simply a lot of history that hasn’t been much of a part of my education because it’s such a vast field. Therefore, this information that follows is not to be taken as absolute fact. (So if anyone is educated in Japanese history or has Japanese as their first language, do feel free to correct any mistakes I may have made!)

So, to try and answer your question, anon!

There are a lot of difficulties trying to even relate Japaneses titles to a European concept since Japan did not have the same kind of peerage as, say, England. In fact, they had no similar peerage until the mid-1800s; when the court nobility (”kuge”) and feudal lords (”daimyo”) were combined into an aristocrat with titles corresponding to the European peerage.[1] (More on the European, specifically English, peerage can be fond here). Being a shogun was heredity and the shogun would name his son as heir and it was the noble families (the landowning feudal Lords “daimyo”) which fought to hold the title and political power that came with it. The title as such was no hereditary noble title, though.[2]

When it comes to formal titles you’d have “no kimi” for Lords and Ladies. It’s used as a suffix and though not really in use today, it was common during the Heian period. You also have Tono (pronounced with a “d” rather than “t”), which means roughly “master” or “lord” and has a usage similar to the English “milord” or the French “monseigneur”. A polite title rather than a mark of nobility. You’d use “sama” for someone who outrank you. You’d use “san” for someone you don’t know very well, who are of the same or lower rank than you. “Kun” is often used for boys but can be used for girls, for example daughters or employees by their parents or seniors. When used by male friends or family, it’s a more familiar way to address someone than “san”.[3]

I am not sure how the shogun would be addressed exactly since I can’t seem to find information. I would assume that they were addressed as their title and “sama”. Or with their name and “no kimi” or simply by the word “tono”. It would likely depend on who is addressing them and in which setting. It’s a rather complex system for an outsider to be honest.

What this means is that the sons of a shogun would, if addressed in a formal way, be addressed with “san” if they are children and, maybe, “sama” as an adult. Possibly “no kimi” for an adult son of a shogun. It would also seem that the word “shogun” was not used during the Tokugawa shogunate - which is the one you are interested in. They used “kubo” (short for “kuge no kata”, “people of the noble houses”), “taiju” (great tree) or “taikun” (great prince/lord).[4] This means this is what you’d use in formal settings for other characters to address your shogun character. The Tokugawas did use “king” (kokuo) but that created problems in their dealings with China, as it suggested subordination to the Chinese emperor. Thus the usage of “taikun”. Unfortunately this still created problems in their dealings with both Korea and China and the Tokugawa shogun went back to the title of “king” with the added “of Japan” (”Nihon kokuo”).[5] Despite these different titles, they weren’t monarch, kings or princes the way a European would be a king. The words don’t carry the same connotations. They were the ones with political power, absolutely, but they were not divinely chosen as European kings were chosen by God and Chinese and Japanese emperors were Sons of Heaven. They were feudal lords (”daimyo”), similar to those in Europe.[6]

That’s the best I can do, hope it was helpful! Good luck with your writing!

Signed, Captain.

“I dare you to make Howell wanna date you.”

Phil sputtered, nearly choking on his school lunch (a bland chicken sandwich with too much ketchup to actually taste nice); his airway closed off a bit around the food as he tried to dislodge it from his throat, gasping for air while his friends slammed their fists on his back to help. “Excuse me?” Phil asked once he could properly breathe again, squinting at Chris with a discerning look.

Chris rolled his eyes, taking a bite of a chip before throwing it at Phil, watching as it landed in his cup of peaches. “You heard me, loser. I dared you to make Daniel Howell want to date Philip Lester.” He dragged out the names as if Phil was deaf, causing the latter to glare accusingly at his friend.

So basically “if the dialogue reads like this” it’s in French. Also, the reader is the daughter of a Virginian Plantation owner, so there will be mentions of slaves in this.

Mademoiselle,” Captain Desrochers greeted, bowing low and accepting the hand you offered, gently kissing your knuckles.

Capitaine,” you responded unenthusiastically. Your father was a general in the American army, a few ranks above Gaston, so obviously you were used to men trying to earn your affections through flattery. This handsome foreigner wasn’t worth your time.

“Now, Captain Desrochers,” your father began in English, placing a gentle hand on your shoulder. “This girl is my pride and joy, so I’m trusting you to look after her in my absence.”

Obviously, I’m home right now (despite what some mid-report sentences will suggest) and I did some editing to the original text I wrote on the train. The second half of the report was completely written after I came home… btw. excuse me for the possible but-load of spelling mistakes. (or even any memory mistakes) It’s midnight, and I just want to sleep by now!

Intro to Upper Class Culture, Part 1: The Opera

Alright so one thing I did when I started sugaring is I tried to become more “cultured” and “sophisticated”. I took some art classes, I read, I watched, I lived and breathed in culture. I see and hear POTs talk about how much they love various upper-crust cultural things all the time so I’m going to start writing mini lessons on various elements of high class culture, because honestly they aren’t as intimidating as you think!

So tonight’s lesson will be: The Opera! I thought I would absolutely hate opera when I was forced to attend a showing of it for a class in college, but I ended up loving it. Why? Because the opera is melodramatic and at times ridiculous and it makes no apologies for that. It is an art form intended to be over the top and as an Eastern European woman I can appreciate gaudiness when I see it.

A brief history: The first opera, Dafne, was written in 1597, during the Renaissance, in Italy. Its writer, Jacopo Peri, was a humanist, which is very significant to the rest of opera’s story. If you don’t know what a humanist is, I’ll break it down for you. Before the renaissance, during the “dark ages”, little worth was placed onto the individual, life centered around God and if God made you into a peasant, you were supposed to stay that way. Then, humanism (which was inspired by Greek and Roman philosophy) took hold. Humanism places worth on the individual and an individual’s autonomy: now people are worth something, even if they are born a lowly peasant, and, they can change their fate. To us this sounds obvious but back then it was pretty cutting edge stuff (they call it the dark ages for a reason). You’ll find a lot of the stories behind great operas reflect humanist ideals! (As a matter of fact, one entire genre of opera, a verisimo, is defined as: a realistic style of opera that depicts the seamy underbelly of life.)

Why is this important? Although, like many art forms, opera began as entertainment in the court, it quickly morphed into an art form for the upper middle class and, eventually, the working class. Yes, that’s right, snooty white glove opera was the art form that championed the middle class. And, like Shakespeare’s plays just before them, they were often very funny, and quite vulgar. As a matter of fact, operas were banned in Germany for a while because of their vulgarity (as if we didn’t already think Germans were wound a little too tight).

Now, assuming you’ve gotten over your preconceived hatred of the opera (good for you, try something new!) you might be a little nervous about actually attending your first opera. Lucky for you, there isn’t really too much etiquette behind it!

First, there is the dress code. You don’t have to dress that nice to go to the opera. You can! If you want to wear a ball gown and a fur coat and diamonds go for it. More than likely there will be other people there doing that, especially if it’s opening night. My friend told me that her grandmother took her to the opera every year and they dressed to the nines and it was her favorite part about going. You do you girl. But if you want to be more low key, that’s ok too. I would say don’t wear anything you wouldn’t wear to church or a nice brunch; keep it decently classy, no yoga pants.

Second, what do you do during the show? Make no noise. Seriously. Zero noise. Why? The singers use no amplification, and it’s amazing how much sound they produce. But, if someone makes a noise (whether it’s with a cellphone, you rummaging in your purse for chap stick or your fancy little binoculars or whatever) it’s super distracting for everyone within earshot and can drown out the amazing performance. So sit back, and relax. And don’t. Make. A sound.

Third, when is it ok to make noise? Before, during intermission and after, lol. And also when clapping! When should you clap? you might be wondering. Generally, when everyone else is clapping, at the very beginning when the conductor is on stage, at the end of an act and at the end. And when you’re clapping it’s appropriate to yell “bravo” when celebrating a man, “brava” for a woman and “bravi” for a group.

Alright, a little opera vocab for you and then we’re almost done.

aria: An emotion-expressing song in an opera; the big number.

bel canto: A style of sweet singing, taught to singers even today, that emphasizes breath control, a beautiful tone, and great flexibility in dynamics

cadenza: A moment near the end of an aria for the singer alone, with lots of fast, high, difficult notes, designed for showing off. (bonus tip: use this to sound fancy, it’ll impress your date)

libretto: The script of an opera.

opera buffa: Funny opera, especially from the 18th century.

opera seria: Formal, serious opera, especially from the 18th century.

prima donna: The singer who plays the heroine, the main female character in an opera; or anyone who believes that the world revolves around her.

recitative: (“ress-it-uh-TEEV”): Speech-singing, in which the singer semi-chants the words, imitating the free rhythms of speech.

Singspiel: (“SING-shpeel”): A German opera with spoken dialogue (instead of recitative) between arias.

Tips On How to Make the Opera More Enjoyable:

1) Read the plot of the play beforehand. Read it fairly thoroughly, not just a two sentence summary. I promise it will make it more enjoyable if you know what’s going on.

2) In the US a lot of opera houses provide translations on some sort of screen behind the singers (since most of us don’t happen to speak German/Italian/French etc.). But if they don’t it’s ok. I know the idea of sitting through a series of odd sounding dialogues in a language you don’t understand may sound frustrating (welcome to my first year in America!) but it really isn’t that bad. Enjoy the sound of the opera, don’t worry about the dialogue. The music is what is infinitely more important.

3) Appreciate the other elements of the opera! Whether it’s the lighting, the set, the costumes, the acting, there is so much going on in the opera! Opera, fun fact, literally translates into “work” because it takes so much work to put on an opera (that very last part might be a joke from my opera singer friend, but it might be true).

4) Appreciate how much effort goes into opera singing! It is AMAZING. It is the olympics of breath control. It’s athletic and beautiful and artistic and takes so much practice and work you can’t even imagine. My friend has been singing opera for 17 years and still considers himself an amateur. They project their voices without any amplification and use every single inch of their body to make that much noise and if you don’t find that impressive then I dare you to go try opera singing and come back to me.

Anyway, that’s all I really have! So whether it’s for a date, or a class, or just because you want to try something new that’s outside your comfort zone, hopefully this post will leave you a little more educate on the opera and make you want to experience it for yourself!

Now go get yourself a ticket and impress someone with all your newfound opera knowledge!

You practically skipped through the streets, going to meet your courter. The Frenchman, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. Of course you and your friends called him Lafayette. He had been courting you for 3 months now, though the two of you had been close friends for much longer.

“Lafayette!” You shouted happily. He had been looking the opposite direction of the way you came. He spun and smiled widely.

“Mon cheri!” He wrapped his arms around you, picked you up, and spun you in circles. This was habit for the two of you as it always made you laugh. He loved pulling a laugh from you, and you loved the way your laugh made him smile. Your friends always teased the two of you.

Disney songs in Arabic

More Disney songs! This time in Arabic~

Some notes: I tried my best to find the correct Arabic title, but it’s possible that there may be an error or two. If you notice, I couldn’t even find an Arabic title for some of the songs, so I apologize for that! But again, I did try my best. Most of these are Egyptian Arabic, but there are a few MSA versions scattered throughout. The english titles next to the Arabic is not necessarily a translation, but rather the english title. I apologize if your favourite Disney film or song didn’t make the list, I definitely didn’t get all of them. Also, I tried my best to find videos that had subtitles and a translation, but unfortunately not all of them have it. You can always do a quick google search if you want the lyrics and/or english translation.

Annabeth Chase Appearance Headcanons

Per request of tubular man (Sorry if some of these sound a bit repetitive since i’ve talked about Annabeth in another post but oh well I could talk about her for days)

Warning: This post is basically just me ranting on about how gorgeous this girl is and are you even surprised because Annabeth is an absolute queen come fight me

  • Annabeth Chase, to put it simply, is mesmerizing. She glows with a stunning vitality - her skin is smooth and unblemished, her hair lustrous and full, her teeth pearly and bright, her eyes radiant and vibrant.
  • Her beauty is natural and distinctly memorable - the type where she still sharp in your mind even long after she is long gone.
  • She has a heart shaped face that is made up of smooth, clear angles. Her nose is upturned and her lips are full with a healthy rose hue to them. She always bites her bottom lip when she concentrates (something that drives Percy crazy) Her eyebrows are defined - not thin but not thick - with a natural arch to them.
  • Her eyes consume you. They a large and captivating, framed with long dark lashes, piercing you with a swirling thunderstorm of grays. Her eyes seem to reach far beyond your own, almost as if all of your inner secrets are drug out and laid bare to her.
  • Her smile is positively one of her most wonderful features. Her smile just lights up her face in a way that’s purely magical, her eyes brightening and features softening. She looks so breath-taking and carefree and enchanting and whenever she smiles that smile you can’t help but smile back.
  • Her hair is a pale golden blonde and is very long, tumbling down all the way to the small of her back. If it’s cut too short it poofs and frizzes, not to mention she secretly likes how princess-like it is when it’s long not that she’ll ever tell anybody that. Her hair is only her feature that she takes considerable effort to make look good on a daily basis so it’s described as “princess curls” and “wavy” and not a rat’s nest. Her hair is parted neatly on her right, and the length of her hair weighs the strands down into soft curls.
  • Everyone, and I mean everyone, absolutely loves her hair. Percy loves to run his fingers through the strands and muss up the curls. Piper will plait braids into it to match her own and when Silena was alive, she used to practice complicated hairstyles on Annabeth’s hair.
  • Her go to hairstyles are high ponytails, french braids, double french braids, messy buns, or just leaving it down.
  • Her body type is lean and toned with a slender frame. Since she has to rely solely on her intelligence and body to fight monster she resorts to agility and stealth instead of brute strength, resulting in slimmer appearance rather than bulging with muscle.
  • Don’t get me wrong though, she is very toned and tight and when she flexes hot damn.
  • Her body figure is to die for - slim long legs, hour glass figure, moderate bust - it’s pretty nice to say the least.
  • She walks very lightly on her feat - this once again results in her relying more on stealth and agility to fight her ability. Not to mention the repetitive use of her invisibility cap ensures her nearly silent footsteps.
  • She’s one of the tallest girls of camp, just reaching 5′9″ - Her height is one of her favorite features as it helps to make her more intimidating. She had most of her growth spurts in the beginning of the series and received faint stretch marks on her legs and arms from growing so quickly in such a short amount of time.
  • But dude were there some awkward phases in her childhood where her legs grew faster than the rest of her body and she kinda looked like a baby deer it was fantastic.
  • Her everyday fashion style would have to be considered an attractive, clean-cut simplicity. Her wardrobe is broken down to 25% tees, 20% jeans and shorts, 15% sweaters, 20% exercise clothes, and 20% stolen Percy clothing. There’s always a appealing neatness to her clothing - no clashing colors, no frayed hems, no messily-done patches if any at all. When the need comes to dress nicely she can more than easily rise to the occasion and even enjoys those days when she does put more effort behind her appearance but fashion has never been on the forefront of her mind.
  • More specifics of her wardrobe are formfitting or skinny high-waisted jeans and shorts that are often accompanied with a loose, tucked in short-sleeve shirt or tank top. Her go-to shoes are always tennis shoes or converse.
  • But Annabeth could literally pull of any style it’s not even funny - everything from leather jackets to floral dresses to lopsided button-ups she can rock it all.
  • Her voice is clear and direct. She doesn’t have any accents as she moved around from state to state with Thalia and Luke during those developmental stages. (But boy is she fantastic at copying accents it’s the funniest most cutest thing you’ll ever see)
  • Her appearance is captivating, you might even go so far as to consider her features delicate, if it weren’t for the way she carried herself. - The stereotypes that are brought along with being a “pretty blonde” are far from the ones she wants to be applied to her and she makes sure they never will be. The neutral resting position of her face is already intimidating - aka resting bitch face - but the way she holds herself adds even more to the intimidating factor.
  • She walks with sure steps, her shoulders back, her head held high and you’re pretty sure this girl could dominate the world by three this afternoon.
  • Her intimidating persona comes from these main factors - the way she carries herself (as mentioned before), the neutral position of her facial features, her reputation (hero of olympus, indomitable warrior, bad ass, intelligent af, scary af, her friends, her boyfriend), her height, her eyes, and her beauty.
  • Basically, Annabeth is scary beautiful and beautifully scary and you don’t want to mess with her but at the same time you want to be her best friend and wow you’re never sure if you want to be her or if you want to date her it’s just amazing.
Forever Yours (Lafayette x Reader)

Supernatural x Hamilton (whhhaaaa???)
Title: Forever Yours
Characters: Sam, Dean, Cas, Sister! Reader, Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens, Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, Hercules Mulligan, Aaron Burr

Word Count: 11016 (what the actual fuck happened! Sorry in advance)

Warnings: shitty google translate/GCSE French skills haha, angst, fluff, supernatural violence.

Summary: To complete a spell a special feather is needed. Unfortunately, the only person who knows where to get it died two hundred years ago! However, this is not a problem when you have a time-traveling angel on your side.

A/N: Recently I’ve become OBSESSED with Hamilton so I decided to put my two favourite things together in this wonderful mess of a thing. It was meant to be kinda short but now? I kind of ran away with this idea and didn’t want to stop writing ‘till it was perfect, hence why it’s so late! I hope you enjoy because I had a great time dancing around to the soundtrack thinking of ideas. I cannot wait for it to come to London!!!! As always, hope you guys are alright, check out my masterlist and let me know if you like this! Thanks babes

“And you’re sure you’re okay with this?” Sam asked again. I laughed and nodded.

“What’s the worst that can happen? I’ve already died twice Sammy. I think I can handle a bit of time travel.”

“She will be entirely safe and I can bring her back as easy as I sent her away,” Cas said. The brothers looked nervous. They had a right to be, after all, it wasn’t every day your sister gets sent 200 years into the past to find a secret ingredient!

“I don’t see why we can’t go with her!”

“You are more likely to be killed than I am! You’d get drafted into the war and shot by an English soldier. That’s not something I want to deal with the repercussions of.”

“And what if you die?”

“I’m too pretty to die!” I laughed. Sam raised his eyebrows and laughed. “Seriously! I’ll be fine. A bunch of redcoats aren’t going to scare me, Sammy.”

“If you’re sure.”

“I’m sure.” I laughed again. “Now, can we get on with this? We haven’t got long before the equinox.”

“Three days,” Castiel confirmed. “That should give you enough time to find it.”

“Yep! How hard can a fancy feather be to find anyway?”

“Seeing as we have to send you back in time to find it? I’d say quite.” Dean said.

“Cas can we go now? Before those two bite my head off?” I joked, Cas smiled and stepped towards me. “See you later boys! Bon voyage!” I gave a small salute then I disappeared.

hi!! I have a question about vento aureo. At the part before narancia swims after buccellati and everyone in the boat, he see's trish's hand/wrist, and in the english translation says something like "trish is just like me, we're the same, she has the same wound on her hand like me!!" This part always confused me and I was wondering if it was different in the french translation, or am I missing out on something that clears up this scene?? thank you in advance!!!

If you were to write up a list (of any length) of your personal favorites or best recommendations of Catholic fiction, what would be on it?

There are a couple of interpretations of “Catholic fiction” that are worth exploring.

  • The author is Catholic.
    • The work may or may not be Catholic.
    • Example: For at least part of his life, F. Scott Fitzgerald was Catholic. Would you consider The Great Gatsby Catholic fiction?
  • The work is Catholic or has Catholicism in it.
    • This can mean A) the work is in line with Catholic teaching/themes/events/etc., OR correctly presents Catholic teaching, etc. in the book, intentionally or unintentionally; or B) Catholic teaching, etc. are in the book, but they are inaccurate.
    • Much of C.S. Lewis’ works fall into category A.
    • Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code is firmly in category B. Dan Brown wrote about Catholicism in the same way that L. Ron Hubbard wrote about science.

Read and recommended

  • The Father Brown stories, G.K.Chesterton. There are 5 collections of Fr. Brown short stories: The Wisdom of Father Brown, The Innocence of Fr. Brown, etc. Also worth looking at is Chesterton’s novel The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare.
  • Notes from the Underground, Fyodor Dostoevsky. This is a novella (or short story?) that may give you a nasty shock. I have always been unnerved by how much I have in common with the narrator. The Brothers Karamazov is also an essential. Make sure you get good translations of Dostoevsky’s works!
  • The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas. So many subplots, but the book hinges on forgiveness, and how to forgive.
  • Silence, Shusaku Endo. Do not read Silence and The Power and the Glory back to back, like I did.
  • In This House of Brede, Rumer Godden. I know that I can make some sweeping, melodramatic statements, but I just want to say that this is easily one of the best books of the 20th century.
  • The Power and the Glory, Graham Greene. I hated this book when I first read it, and I resented its popularity. I reread it last year, and I was aghast to find that I enjoyed it tremendously.
  • The Little World of Don Camillo, Giovanni Guareschi. Very funny. Mercilessly mocks fascists.
  • Les Miserables, Victor Hugo. Ponderously long, but Catholic in its understanding of love and the relationship between the self and the other.
  • Shadow in the Dark, Anthony Barone Kolenc. This book is for younger readers, but it’s still a delightful read. A murder mystery unfolds in a 12th century English monastery. Good writing, good characters, and a well-paced plot.
  • The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis. Also worth looking at by Lewis are the Space Trilogy, Till We Have Faces, and The Great Divorce.
  • The Princess and the Goblin, George Macdonald. He also wrote one of my favorite fairy tales/short stories - The Golden Key.
  • The Edge of Sadness, Edwin O’Connor. O’Connor and Spellman are never on Catholic fiction lists, which is a total tragesty. I recommend this book especially for cradle Catholics. O’Connor gets under your skin and pinpoints assumptions about the Faith and about people that you may not have been aware of. It’s one of the best portrayals of depression, too.
  • Quo Vadis, Henryk Sienkiewicz. I read this ages ago, and do not have fond memories of it. Nevertheless, it has been recommended by those whom I trust.
  • The Foundling, Francis Cardinal Spellman. I consider myself an expert on “essential Catholic fiction!” lists, and I have never, ever seen this book mentioned. That is a crime. I think this is the funniest book by a Catholic that I’ve ever read. Literal laugh-out-loud moments, as well as heatbreaking moments. The book can be hard, because the rules about adoption and denominations are not as rigid now. (The book hinges on the fact that non-Catholic parents cannot adopt a Catholic child.)
  • The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Also worth reading is the novel The Hobbit, and the short story Leaf by Niggle.
  • The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Leo Tolstoy. A short story about a man on his deathbed. Painful, bitter, uncomfortable, but important.
  • Sun Slower, Sun Faster, Meriol Trevor. Time traveling kids! Hunted priests! Medieval Catholicism!

Not yet read, but critical to the canon of Catholic fiction

  • Lord of the World, Robert Hugh Benson
  • Diary of a Country Priest, Georges Bernanos
  • Death Comes for the Archbisop, Willa Cather
  • The Spear, Louis de Wohl
  • The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco
  • Thomas Mann
  • Ralph Mcinerny
  • Michael D. O’Brien
  • Wise Blood, Flannery O’Connor
  • The Second Coming, Walker Percy
  • The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, Ellis Peters
  • Kristin Lavransdatter, Sigrid Undset
  • Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh. Waugh also has a hilarious short short story (it’ll take about 30 minutes to read, if that) called Love Among the Ruins. [AN: Please don’t ostracize me for not finishing this yet.]

Serious reservations, but worth knowing

  • Regina Doman. Doman writes fairy tales; she reimagines them through a Catholic lens. I wrote about her elsewhere, but here are my reservations: I heard her speak before I read her, and I loved her argument for evangelizing the imagination. When I actually read her works, I was wildly unimpressed. Her writing is not for me, which is a matter of opinion, but I have stronger objections to how she portrays some of the young women. The moment fixed forever in my mind is how Doman described a high school girl who bullied our painfully shy, virtuous protagonist. Doman made special note of the evil bully’s makeup - especially the green eyeshadow. The book harped on how our protagonist didn’t wear makeup, how she shopped at thrift stores, and how those mean bullies wore fashionable, immodest clothing. Her books seemed sanctimonious, flimsy, and saccharine to me. Again, it’s good to at least know of her. Maybe you’ll read her, love her, and write a defense of her that proves me wrong!
  • The Song at the Scaffold, Gertrude von le Fort. Literarily speaking, this is a wonderful play. Historically speaking, it leaves much to be desired. The play is about the Carmelites of Compeigne, guillotined during the French Revolution. What frustrates me about the play is that reality is incredibly interesting - why did von le Fort remove, create, and totally change characters? I strongly urge you, if you’re interested in this play, to read William Bush’s introduction to To Quell the Terror first.

Title: Coffee and Cigarettes

Summary: Clarke can’t stop drawing the boy at the coffee shop. And apparently her interest isn’t exactly one sided.

Word count: 1.5k+

Clarke’s favorite place to be on days she wasn’t swamped with classes or buried in charcoal and paint at the studio, was Grounders, a quiet little coffee shop just under her apartment complex. It had nothing to do with the giant crush she was harboring on one of the other regulars. Nothing at all. And she absolutely hadn’t scribbled studies of his profile onto her napkins while she waited for her drink to cool down.

Or maybe that was part of the reason she liked the place so much. Maybe  she had drawn him a handful of times. He was cute. She hadn’t had sex in seven months. Sue her.

HOW WE MET; NAOMI CAMPBELL AND AZZEDINE ALAIA

NAOMI CAMPBELL: I first met Azzedine when I was 16. It was my first day working in Paris and somebody had stolen all my money. I didn’t know anyone in the city and didn’t know how I was going to eat. A fellow model who was doing a show with Azzedine then brought me to dinner, and I ate very well. I immediately thought that he was very sweet, normal and humble person, because he was cooking the dinner in the kitchen himself. He also served the food himself. I didn’t say one word, because I didn’t speak French. But as I left, he gave me a present - a dress.

After that, whenever I came to Paris, I would stay with him. He gave me my own room and I still have it. My mum didn’t want me to go to discos and he never used to let me go. One time, I climbed out of the window to a waiting taxi. When he found out, Azzedine put me in the room above him so that if I wanted to go out, I would have to go through his room.

Now, when I come over, we sit around and watch TV. He loves Tunisia very much and has still got very strong roots. You can see that in the videos he watches - old Tunisian movies. We cook eggs, fish or lamb chops in the kitchen and have dinner. Now that I’ve got a little bit older, Azzedine also comes to my house. But the most important thing is that we laugh. We fight and we laugh.

He’s a really big practical joker. Over the 12 years I’ve know him, he has played so many on me. I’ve lost count of the number of times he’s pricked me with pins during fittings. Sometimes, I’ve crept into bed at night and he’s put things under the covers. I remember once I fell down the stairs. There was no ice left in the freezer. So Azzedine put a leg of lamb on my head because it was the only thing he had that was frozen.

Azzedine saw something in me and taught me to have confidence. I didn’t know how to do runway when I started modelling, but he believed in me. That brought attention from other designers, and is kind of how I became known - because other designers heard of this little girl Azzedine was working with.

He really taught me everything about the business, and also taught me even more important things about life - to be yourself, to do things with integrity and to do things from the heart. I think you really can say that he manages to do all of those things. He only designs when he wants to design. He’s always making something new, but doesn’t work to a schedule. He works according to his own schedule. He likes to work late at night, until three or four in the morning. He doesn’t have to do a fashion show because people will come and want to buy his clothes - whenever and whatever he wants to make. He really is unique. He understands a woman’s body better than any other designer. All the other designers respect Azzedine for that and salute him for it.

Fame has not changed him at all. He still works the same way he did the day he started. He has to look at every pattern. He still goes over everything; every single thing. He doesn’t let anything go without him having looked at it and restitched it and repinned it.

My relationship with Azzedine is different from those I have with other designers, because he is the only one I’ve lived with. I call him “Papa” and we really do have a father-daughter relationship. When he’s pissed off with me or mad about something, he picks up the phone and calls my mother. He’s very truthful and that’s another important thing in a friend. When he doesn’t like things I do, he tells me. I was very lucky and fortunate to meet him. Knowing Azzedine kept me on the right road.

His friendship means very much to me and I hope I have it forever. It’s more than just about material things and clothes. He is someone in the world I know I can call up whenever I am down, in need of anything or just want to talk.

One of my best memories is of when I was so overworked at one point and I just called him up and he said, “Come home, ma fille! Come home!” He cooked dinner for me and put me into bed. Then, he called up my agency and said, “Stop overworking her. She doesn’t need to do all these things.” It’s that genuine love of his that’s very special to me.

AZZEDINE ALAIA: The first time I met Naomi, she arrived with a model called Amanda Caseley, who had come to do fittings for my show. While we were doing them, I saw Naomi sitting down and thought, “Wow.” There was something about her which reminded me of Josephine Baker. So I asked her to try something on. She was only 16 at the time and not yet fully developed. But I saw her wonderful muscle structure and asked if she could stay on to do the show. I had to phone her mother, who said, “She can only stay if you put her up.”

Naomi speaks French now - not very well, but I manage to understand her. At that time, however, she didn’t speak French and I didn’t speak English. During the day, things were fine because there were other people around who could translate. But in the evening we found ourselves alone. Her mother speaks French. So I would phone her up in London and and she would explain what each of us wanted to say.

In the beginning, Naomi just slept on a mattress. But she would escape through the window to go out clubbing with other girls. So I put her in the room above mine to keep an eye on her. Sometimes, I even gave her my bed and I would sleep on a mattress on the floor.

At night, I really had to keep an eye on her because she would not stop calling people. She would crawl out of her bed, pick up the telephone, get back into bed with it and pull the covers over her head. I used to scream, “Naomi! Stop phoning abroad.” Her calls were always to New York or London and she’d stay on the phone for hours. When she went, I was left with huge telephone bills. Even now she’d be quite happy to spend her whole life on the phone. I don’t know quite how many mobile phones she has in her bag.

Right from the start you could feel that Naomi had star quality. She has a real presence; whenever she enters a room, something magical happens. But at the beginning, nobody wanted her to model for shows. We went to New York together to see the model agencies. I remember that Elite did not want to take her. So I went to see the owner and said to him, “Listen. She is my daughter, so you have to take her on and look after her. I don’t want her to be left all on her own in New York.”

For me, Naomi really is my daughter. In the past, she used to call me up all the time to ask for my advice. Now, she doesn’t really do so anymore because she knows what I’ll say. She hides things from me. For example, she didn’t ask me if she should record her album or write her novel. I think both were a very bad idea. But it’s not easy for her because she spends her whole time with people who tell her that she is beautiful, and only her mother and I can warn her that she’s being given bad advice. From time to time when I hear or read something, I ring her up and say, “Just what’s going on?” I fall out with her regularly. I sulk and don’t speak to her when she does something stupid. But it never lasts.

I think I’m so attached to Naomi because we are both so alike. We can both be quite unbearable! Seriously, on first meeting her, she can seem quite defensive. But, once you’ve gained her confidence, she lets herself go. She may have a reputation for being difficult, but she really isn’t at all. She is a very fragile person, who needs affection. She needs to be loved. If she is capricious, it’s because there is a good reason. When she was younger, I was always being called into photo studios to calm her down, because a stylist had upset her. But now she has changed.

She’s a great practical joker. She plays jokes on everyone, especially my cook. She’d put things in his sauces and pour in lots of salt when his back was turned. But she is also very generous. When she was young and poor, she bought me a dog: I don’t know how many jobs she had to do to save up the money. Now when she offers presents, they are never little ones. They are really quite sumptuous. Recently, for example, she bought me an antique Prouve bookcase.

Nowadays, we don’t see each other as much as before. She doesn’t have as much time: she is always in a plane going from one country to the other. But, she really is a very faithful friend. In modelling, it’s very hard to keep in touch with the people you knew when you started. Even though we fall out from time to time, I do think that our friendship will last. Something really serious would have to happen for us to lose touch completely!

Rain of Promises (NM)

A/N: The story contains strong language and sexual scenes so please don’t complain when you get to those parts.

This is the translation of the story written by me. Hope you’ll like it!

PART 1.

“Alexia, wake up right now if you don’t want to be late!” - mom screams from the first floor. I open my eyes slowly. Honestly, I don’t care, it is the last day of school before summer holidays. I thought on skipping it but my mother worries about my education a lot so I kind of don’t want to let her down. At least I will do nothing but chillin’ with my best friend Jasmine. We’ve known each other for 5 years now and I trust her as much as I trust myself. Except of Jas, I have more friends at school, Jack and Jack for example. We met when we just went to the high school and became friends almost immediately.
I get up and go to the bathroom. After taking a quick shower and brushing teeth, I walk up to the closet and pick blue ripped skinny jeans, a white tee and a «Nike» jacket. I walk downstairs and see my mom opening an envelope.
“What’s this?” - I ask, taking a seat.
“Your grades” - she smiles and picks the white sheet in her hands. Her smile slowly disappears, making me nervous.
“Why «C» on a French, darling?” - she looks up at me and I take a deep breath. Here we go again.
“I told you so many times” - I try to speak as calm as I can.
“I thought you were getting on with Mr. Andrè..” - she says and I look down. This teacher hasn’t loved since the ninth grade even though I’ve always tried to get a good mark on his lesson.
“But listen, I’m pleased with all the other grades, honey” - she stands up and kisses me in the forehead. Actually, this year wasn’t that hard for me but I feel like the next one is gonna be harder because it’s the last one. I’m pleased with all of my grades as well, even with French.
My phone buzzes when I take a sip of coffee. A message from Jasmine appears on a lockscreen.

From Jas 👸: Got grades?

From Lex 👯: Yeah, mom’s okay

I quickly text her back and lock the phone, looking at my mom getting ready for work.
“I’m leaving” - she shays and takes her bag.
“Are you gonna be late tonight?” - I nearly screams.
“I think so” - she turns to me, “did you want something?”
“Can I stay at Jas’ tonight? Please mommm” - I make puppy eyes, this causes her to laugh.
“Fine, Lex but keep me up to date” - she waves her hand and leaves. I smile brightly, I am really looking forward to the evening. We will probably watch a film or hang out with the Jacks. To be honest, I’m a good girl only for my mother and way different with friends. If she only knew what happened every time I stayed at Jasmine’s house, I’d be grounded forevermore.
Suddenly my phone started ringing, it’s Gilinsky.
“What’s up?” - I answer, chewing my toast.
“Get your ass out of the house, we’re picking you up” - he says in a sassy way.
“Fuck you G, I’m not ready yet” - I look at the mirror. I have no makeup and my hair is a huge mess.
“You have 15 minutes” - he said and hangs up. What a dork.
I put some makeup on and make a ponytail. I grab some books from table and put them into my backpack, take keys from the counter and walk outside. Jack G’s black jeep is already in front of my house. I see Johnson sitting on the passenger seat and sigh, I hate being on the backseat.
“I said fifteen minutes, not thirty” - says Gilinsky when I open the door.
“Oh, fuck off” - I throw the backpack and sit. Johnson let out a laugh and we go directly to the school.
“Why did you even decide to pick me up?” - I ask Johnson when we get out of a car.
“I don’t know really” - he shrugs and smiles.
We walk to the front doors of «Westside High School». When we get into the building I see Jasmine.
“Hey” - she gives me a hug.
“What about me?” - Gilinsky looks at her and opens his arms.
“Shit, no” - she says, turning her back to him and I laugh but Jack seems to be really upset. Well, I’ve always thought that he had something for her but he wouldn’t tell anyone except of Jack J.
Unfortunately, I am the only one attending French lessons so I have to leave guys for some time when the bell rings. I walk past people sitting in the class and take a seat with Mike. We were sitting together since the first day of high school.
“Mikeeeeey” - I smile at him.
“What’s new, Lex?” - he asks turning his head to me.
“Oh nothing much really, just…” - I can’t go on telling because Mr. Andrè walks in the class.
The day goes pretty good with an exception of countless number of homework we’ve got for the summer break.
“Is it even legal?” - asks Jack G looking at a piece of paper. We all sit on the stairs in front of main gates and discuss if we should go to PE classes or not.
“I don’t mind playing some basketball so I’d rather go” - says Johnson.
“Hold on, dude” - Gilinsky looks at the guy who is running to us.
“Is it Wilkinson?” - asks Jasmine. I look at the tall, slim figure getting closer and yes, it’s obviously Sam. I wonder how he even let himself come here on the last day of school.
“What’s poppin’ everyone” - he does that greeting thing with the boys. Our eyes meet and Sammy winks at me. Their “only boys” conversation gets me bored so I sit next to Jas who is on her phone.
“Guess who is staying at yours tonight?” - I say, she looks at me.
“Did your mom actually say «yes»?! - she screams happily.
“She did!” - I smile, Jasmine hugs me and laughs.
“What happened?” - ask Jack and Jack in unison.
“Her mom let her stay at my place tonight” - she points at me. I nod and smile.
“What a plot twist” - Gilinsky smirks and turns to guys.
“Skate’s throwing a party tonight” - says Sam and looks at us with a bright smile.
“Wait, what? We don’t even know who the hell is Skate” - says Jasmine, getting up from the stairs.
“So what? He is our guy, you’ll know him” - Johnson looks at both of us while taking his backpack from the ground.
“We’ll pick you up from yours house at 9” - Gilinsky says to Jasmine, “oh and if I say 9, it doesn’t mean 9:30, alright?” - he looks at me with a smirk on his face.
“You gotta go” - I tell him, he’s so annoying.
Now we’re heading to Jas’ to get ready for the party.

how miraculous ladybug has given me the best friends a girl could ask for

AKA Why I love Project ML

For those that don’t know, I’m part of the wacky, ragtag group known as @project-ml. It’s been almost a year since it’s conception and well–this group has become such a part of my everyday life that I honestly don’t know where I would be without them.

They are first people I talk to when I wake up in the mornings, sometimes snapping pictures of sunrises to drop in our massive group chat or hopping on voice calls with people across the world who should be sleeping! Lately, I’ve been getting to know @miraculous-mask when I start my days with my cup and coffee and she helps me decide what I’m going to eat for breakfast. She also lets me see pretty previews of your art sometimes which is super, super cool!

They make me smile and laugh when we have silly memes going on with our own inside jokes. Honestly, @mattiematt@siveemusic, @theleftnostril, and @shadybug keep me on my toes because I never know what is going to be next big joke in the group chats! On discord when they introduced nicknames, everyone became Tony Hawk and it was such chaos that the company had to create a new patch immediately to take away nicknaming power….because of us lol

We all geek out together about different TV shows or games or when Ladybug is airing–well, we get really into it when Ladybug is airing. When Ladybug is on, chat is not safe and we are giving play by plays and everything. It’s quite intense when we start getting into french translations when raws come out lol You can thank @wintermoth for that!

We have about a million little sub chats for just about any show you can ever imagine! Games, books, anything–we also all game together! Left for Dead 2 is popular with @ladybugandblackchat and many more! I personally play a lot of Overwatch with @kasumiafkgod~

When we have projects, we are cheering each other, bouncing ideas off each other to make the fandom happy. @piikoarts, @miraculouseyracat and @texmexchexmix have the most beautiful drawings and I’m also so stoked when they drop into chat!

(we also have people like @toriitorii, but I’m way too shy to say anything so I just fangirl from afar!)

So much thought and consideration goes into all of events too, I’m always really surprised how management is able to do it all! They make us work, have bi-monthly meetings, and wrote a crazy and through code of conduct. I was honestly very impressed! @rionydal is especially keeps me on the my toes the most and always makes sure I do my projects on time! She always checks up on me and is such a blessing to have a scrub mom.

(of course, @soundofez also makes sure that I’m doing my work for project stuff because I can get very distracted. I enjoy her diligence so much!)

They’re there for me when I’m bored on long drives and I know that I can call one of my lovely friends from across the country to keep me company. Honestly, it’s practically a meme itself how I only call when I’m driving (PSA: Make sure to use a wireless device when driving!) @panda013 and @chassecroise are practically number ones on my speed dial and I love pointing out the differences between where I live and where they live all the time. Who knew that mountains could be so exciting! And now that @runningoutofink is in the same country of me, I’m trying to add her to my roster of phone calls too–as she was for sure one of my first writing friends in the fandom!

(But really, when I call, the first thing they ask me is if I’m driving lol)

Late at night we all jump into voice chat together and people will we sing songs to each other from Disney to Hamilton to anything in between. We make up our own songs. @sarahcada and @adjit are such wonderful singers and make me break out of my shell and sing too though it’s not my favorite thing. Pro tip: if you everyone tries to sing at the same time, you are never in harmony lol

We are just also really invested in everyone’s lives–like what are you eating for dinner, GO TO BED, omg who do you like, tell me, tell me now!

Did I mention that we really love playing cards against humanity too? I always end up losing, but I love to play when I can! And we have a scrub radio where we listen to everyone’s favorite music and sometimes if you’re old enough we have drunk chat which is a trip inside itself lol Granted, I usually just call when I’m grilling on the BBQ. My fellow scrubs can attest for that!

But…the thing I think I love most about Project ML is that it is through fandom we came together. We came together because a great show like Miraculous Ladybug exists and we wanted to create things to share with all of you. However, the best thing is that we stay together because somehow, through some odd way–we all grew to love each other.

I’m looking forward to all of our future projects because I get to work with some of the most genuine and kindest people in this fandom. Later this month too, my friends have created some amazing and wonderful things that are just so new and creative that I just can’t wait!

Honestly, I’m so proud of each and every one of them.

Project September is going to blow your minds.
