or are they basically unrelated and it's just a 'common name' type thing

why are you anti gmo?

Ok first of all, what is GMO?
“A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.“

Basically, it is an organism made in a laboratory. Artificial organism. Not natural. Genes from one source inserted into an unrelated object (plant/animal). Combinations of genes that do NOT occur in nature. Why would anyone think that something so UNNATURAL would be good for us?
Let’s do a little research…

“Numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise.“

“A genetically modified plant could theoretically have lower nutritional quality than its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans.”

“In a new study published in the peer reviewed Public Library of Science (PLOS), researchers emphasize that there is sufficient evidence that meal-derived DNA fragments carry complete genes that can enter into the human circulation system through an unknown mechanism.“ (In another words, DNA from genetically modified crops can be transferred into humans who eat them)

“Both pesticides and GMOs have been connected with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. There are additonal health concerns too including reproductive issues, autism and even heart disease”

“The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. They cite animal studies showing organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility. Human studies show how genetically modified (GM) food can leave material behind inside us, possibly causing long-term problems.”

“Genetically modified organisms have not been proven in any way to be safe, and most of the studies are actually leaning the other direction, which is why many of the world’s countries have banned these items whose DNA has been genetically engineered.“

NOT TO MENTION, THAT GMO PRODUCE IS NOWHERE NEAR AS NUTRITIOUS THAN ORGANIC, OR NON-GMO PRODUCE

IF GMO’s ARE SO BAD, WHY DO THEY EVEN EXIST?

“The main reasons for genetic manipulation of species used in aquaculture are all directly connected to improved output/input ratios. They are:
a) to enhance growth and/or efficiency of food conversion,
b) to enhance commercially significant flesh characteristics,
c) to control reproductive activity and/or sexual phenotype,
d) to increase resistance of species to pathogens/parasites,
e) to increase tolerance to/of environmental variables such as temperature,
f) to modify behaviour, e.g. aggression, and
g) to control fertility and/or viability.“

^BASICALLY, IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY.

OK, I GET IT. HOW CAN I AVOID GMO’S?
For most of us, it is quite difficult to avoid GMO’s COMPLETELY. They are everywhere - in our food, in skincare products, in make up. What you can do is educate yourself. BE AWARE. Buy as much organic as possible. Buy as less processed products as possible.
HERE is a great website to check if the brand you are buying verified Non-GMO.
SOME TIPS TO AVOID GMO PRODUCTS HERE.

MOST COMMON GMO PRODUCTS - therefore better be avoided/bought organic
1. Soybeans — Gene taken from bacteria (Agrobacterium sp. strain CP4) and inserted into soybeans to make them more resistant to herbicides.
2. Corn — There are two main varieties of GE corn. One has a gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis inserted to produce the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin, which poisons Lepidoteran pests (moths and butterflies).[2] There are also several things that are resistant to various herbicides present in high fructose corn syrup and glucose/fructose, prevalent in a wide variety of foods in America.
3. Canola — Gene added/transferred to make the crop more resistant to herbicide.
4. Sugar beets — Gene added/transferred to make crop more resistant to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.
5. Cotton — engineered to produce BT toxin. The seeds are pressed into cottonseed oil, a common ingredient in vegetable oil and margarine.
6. Dairy — Cows injected with GE hormone rBGH/rBST; possibly fed GM grains and hay.
7. Sugar - In 2012, the FDA approved the sale of GMO beet sugars under the name “SUGAR.” If you see “CANE SUGAR,” there’s a good chance it’s not GMO.
8. Papayas.
9. Zucchini.
10. Baked goods often have one or more of the common GM ingredients.
