or any john green books

  • everyone who makes "every john green book" posts: i haven't actually read any of these books but i see that teenage girls like them and often relate to the characters, especially when they say pretentious fakedeep stuff so rather than acknowledging that maybe this author is attempting to portray the realities of being a young teenager, which often include being kinda pretentious and fake deep, im just going to make fun of him and make young girls who relate to his characters feel alienated and excluded because i like to shame people out of enjoying media that i personally don't like. since i haven't read the books, i also don't know that john green is trying to show how damaging it is when we romanticize other people, especially when boys idealize girls they have crushes on. i don't know that john green's books end with the greasy white nerd boy realizing that teenage girls are just people so i'm going to continue making snarky posts because that's easier than trying to understand something i don't like. this is really helpful & i feel that i am using my time productively
On the hate against John Green

I haven’t read any of his books. Let me get that out of the way first. I also haven’t seen the movies. So, when I talk about John Green, I’m talking about the person who, with his brother, runs a host of Internet shows, services, etc, and who raised over 1.5 million dollars for vital charities last year, while bringing attention to them that very few other people with such a large platform are choosing to do.

So, I watch his internet videos. Including the most recent one about Syrian refugees.

Frankly, if you can watch that video and ones like it, and get pissed off that this white guy is saying these things, or assume that he is doing it for ally props rather than a genuine desire to make the world better, I want to know what your actual fucking problem is. Because the lives and safety and happiness of those refugees is improved by the money and awareness he has raised and that is literally infinitely more important than how you feel about the person doing that work.

If you are angry that his prominence in YA fiction has made him something of a gate keeper, I want to know what exactly you would have him do that he isn’t doing?

Should he not write YA? Should he not recommend books by female authors?
What has he done or not done that has drawn your ire, exactly? He wrote books people love and take great comfort and inspiration from. That his success has negative side effects is not his fault, nor is there anything he could do to make it not the case. What he can do to mitigate it, he is currently doing.

And seriously, if you look at John Green and see “creep” because his books are about youth and he hangs out with young people and engages with them, rather than seeing that and seeing “teacher”, unfollow me.

My favorite books are anything written by Rick Riordan, John Green, Shakespeare, THG series, and any horror books. If you post about any of these things, I’ll be sure to check out your blog!! ☺

I think when you fall in love with a book, you’re not just falling in love with the story but you’re falling in love with everything that goes along with it. You love the characters and you notice every little thing about them, you notice their quirks and how they interact with other characters. You follow their story and you live it with them. You hope the writer gives them a happy ending but know that you’d be slightly disappointed if they did because then the stories done and there’s nothing left to think about when you read the last word on the last page and when you do finish the book you feel empty, like a part of you is missing. You’ve connected to these people that don’t even exist so much that when you close the book you literally don’t know what to do other than lie on the floor for a while.

Let's Talk About Reading

One of the things that bothers me most is when people tell me they hate to read, or rather when they are avid about how much they hate to read. I don’t think it’s possible to hate reading, I just think you haven’t given it a chance yet.

I think many people who say they hate reading hate it because of our school system and how it’s made books seem like a long and boring task. They’ll tell you to read but while you do it, you must also highlight and write down words you don’t know and write down questions even if you don’t have any so by the end, it’s nearly impossible to enjoy what you’ve just read.

But let me tell you something I discovered, there is absolutely nothing better than reading a good book. I mean, a GOOD book, a book that will invade your thoughts for weeks or months, a book that makes you question the way that you look at the world, a book that keeps you up at night thinking about it, a book that makes you cry and laugh and feel things just by looking at words on a piece of paper, books that make you want to change the kind of person you want to become, books that let you know you aren’t alone even when you’re in the darkest of places.

So I’m begging you, pick up a good book and really read it (without any distractions or having to take any notes) before you say that you hate to read because used to tell everyone that I hated to read until I discovered how magical it could be.

The best part is that there are books for everyone whether you’re into love stories, psychology, science fiction etc.

Here are three books I’ve recently read that have touched me which I strongly recommend you read (my personal opinion though).

  • “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green (or any John Green book for that matter)
  • “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Haddon
  • “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell

chochang replied to your post: “chochang replied to your post: “chochang replied…”

I was never a fan of JGreen anyway so that was a good catalyst for me to hate him tbh

but man, I could never stand him

aos will always focus on what gives it the most attention- ex fs and the romantic relationships that aren’t daisy johnson

lmao i totally see where you’re coming from about john green. i never read any of his books but it just seemed to be way too much hype about subpar concepts?

and that’s unfortunately true. the good thing about this extra-long hiatus? no fitz. the bad thing? no daisy :(
