FIVE minutes and 40 seconds.

That’s how long it takes former ONE DIRECTION heart-throb HARRY STYLES to establish himself as the world’s most exciting new music star.

His debut single Sign of the Times is a soaring, epic rock ballad that sounds like a cross between DAVID BOWIE and LANA DEL REY (as weird as that sounds).

It goes against the current trend of non-distinguishable dance tracks — the length alone would make it commercial suicide for any other artist.

Its main instrument is the piano, which Harry has been studiously playing in private for years.

For large portions of the track he sings in falsetto, showing off a quality voice with much more range than we ever saw during his five years in 1D. This song has the potential to become a timeless classic.

Harry co-wrote it with the brilliant, highly regarded Grammy-winning producer JEFF BHASKER, best known for his work with KANYE WEST and JAY Z.

Whether anyone in the industry will take young Harry seriously as the “next Bowie” remains to be seen, but the 23-year-old is certainly putting his best foot forward.

The lyrics are “deeply personal”, sources close to Harry tell me, but they’re also open to any form of interpretation.

Sign of the Times begins with him singing over the piano: “Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times. Welcome to the final show, hope you’re wearing your best clothes.”

Could it be about a break-up? Possibly. Or maybe about death? More likely.

The refrain throughout the song is his need to “gotta get away from here”. From what exactly isn’t clear.

We could meet again somewhere, somewhere far away from here,” he sings, poignantly.

Many people think Harry has disappeared up his own backside with an arty promotional campaign designed to distance himself as far as possible from the 1D heritage that has given him this opportunity.

That said, I give him huge credit for releasing the most daring and well-delivered debut single of the decade.

And you won’t get it out of your head once you’ve heard it . . .  - THE SUN

from what i’m seeing of report backs from the airport protests, there is a significant shift in behaviour and attitudes compared to the normal protest culture, far more significant than a broken window or slightly larger black bloc.

these are spontaneous protests in countless cities not normally known for protest including many people who have never protested before or who have only attended sanctioned protests before. people are directly contesting the actions of government and its enforcers at the site they are being carried out; this is as close to mass direct action as we’ve seen in a long time. while there are exceptions, many crowds are spontaneously occupying and shutting down infrastructure, terminals, and roads, breaking out of caged “free-speech zones” and disobeying direct orders of police.

liberals and previously “nonpolitical” people are joining in chants linking american borders to palestine, calling for “no borders no nations” and challenging the police with “who do you serve” and “who protects us.” they are (again with exceptions) realizing that law enforcement in the police and DHS may not be on their side and challenging that authority. they’re also not being pacified by concessions and constitutional measures. a legal stay has been disobeyed by law enforcement and people are taking note of that, and not dispersing to place their faith in the normal processes of government.

this is what radicalisation looks like. not as we’re perhaps used to seeing it, but in a new and more open form. maybe it dissipates briefly but i’m not convinced this is just a momentary flare-up. i think real changes in people’s belief systems and how they relate to power and authority is occurring right now as they gain these new experiences and internalize them.

people are flexing and testing power and authority, and realizing they have far more ability to contest it than they previously thought

Your apartment was like a ghost town. The emptiness echoed every time you stepped foot in the sad space. His shoes were missing by the front door. Your keys were never on the side table. There was evidence that people lived there. Ramen packets in the trash. Used coffee cups on the sink. But no one had really been around for two weeks.

Two weeks. This was the longest you had gone without speaking to Hoseok, yet alone seeing him. The fight at Yoongi’s was the worst you ever had. His sharp tongue dug wounds that even stitches couldn’t heal. He had been keeping himself occupied at Yoongi’s or the dance studio. Your heart sank into your chest anytime you came home and heard the washing machine running, only to find that the person who was wearing them was nowhere to be found.

A small part of you enjoyed the quiet. You were able to spread all your materials out on the coffee table. Bags of chips and half empty iced lattes were littered in between stacks of highlighted notes. He wasn’t there to yell at you when you fell asleep face first on your microbiology homework, the lines of the pages leaving imprints on your cheeks.

You did miss him. The two of you had been friends for years. But this time it was not your turn to say sorry. If Hoseok wanted things to go back to normal, he would have to swallow his large amount of pride and apologize.

But you had never heard Hoseok apologize in his life.

Reasons to watch the New Russian Holmes series (2013)

I’ve blogged a lot about this show over the last month or so, but I’ve been meaning to make a big post about it all in one place, so here we go!

A brief intro for those who care:

Sherlock Holmes (2013), or, as it seems to be popularly called, New Russian Holmes (as opposed to the old Soviet Holmes), is an eight-episode Russian-language Sherlock Holmes adaptation directed by Andrei Kavun, starring Igor Petrenko as Holmes and Andrei Panin as Watson. It first aired in Russia in November 2013, but has had no official English release.

So where can I watch it?

Despite the limited release, all eight episodes are available on Youtube, with English subtitles, translated thanks to the excellent @spiritcc.

Yeah but why should I watch it?

Because it is excellent. I don’t want to spoil people too much because discovering things yourself is really the best, but let’s be a bit more specific:

The opening credits:

Even before the first scene, we get treated to a beautiful opening sequence with really great music, but this isn’t just a sequence to shove credits in your face, it’s not even just an aesthetically pleasing series of shots of Watson’s notebook, the opening sequence forms part of the episode and part of the series as a whole.

Every opening is unique, from the images to the voiceover, and is as much a part of the story as the substantive scenes themselves.

The refreshing take on canon:

If you’re going to watch this, you need to know that the fundamental premise of the show is that the ACD canon lies. Watson’s “stories” are just that: stories. Holmes in real life is different, Watson is different, Mrs Hudson is different, the cases went differently, hell, even Gregson is different. So if you’re looking for a faithful replication of canon, this isn’t the show for you, but once you take on board this fundamental premise, it’s fantastic because it forces you to think about canon in a new light, and to consider the implications of Watson as an unreliable narrator.

You’ll get to see how and why Watson came to write “canon” the way he did, and you’ll get to see how everyone reacts to it. Every other adaptation (with the exception of Bert Coules’ radio series perhaps, but even that adheres to canon quite strictly) treats canon as more or less the “truth” and bases their version off that to create an output; this show treats canon as the output, and works backwards to imagine the “true” series of events behind it. This aspect (at least for me) was one of the most delightful themes to watch develop throughout the episodes, and it really shows how much original thought and passion went into the conception and creation of the show.

Watson as the true protagonist:

This sort of follows on from the fundamental premise of the canon stories being mere stories. Watson is the person through whom we get to know Holmes; everything we read is Watson’s doing, so it’s natural that the protagonist should also be Watson. We see the world from Watson’s perspective.

It’s not a story about this genius Holmes and his sidekick Watson, it’s a story about Watson and his adventures with this intriguing man, Holmes, and in that way it makes the show very grounded and very real.

Holmes the nerd:

For some reason, Igor Petrenko’s Holmes has been likened to Robert Downey Jr.’s Holmes, but I don’t think that’s accurate at all. Whereas RDJ’s Holmes veers more towards grubby cocky action hero who happens to be good at reasoning (and I don’t say that with any scorn), Petrenko’s Holmes is very much grounded in the same sheer intellect that defines canon Holmes, only this version is a more flawed, nervous character, which I think makes him more interesting. Petrenko does an excellent job with the quirks and mannerisms of the character. He also keeps insects in jars in his room.

nerd.

Watson the military man:

A lot of adaptations emphasise Watson’s role as a doctor, but few seem to remember that he was also a soldier, so it’s refreshing once again to see this series not only acknowledge that military background, but to explicitly keep it front and centre the entire time.

Watson the surgeon:

For all its joviality, the show doesn’t shy away from graphic realities either. Watson is more than just a doctor, he’s a surgeon. We see him handle the scalpel more than he does the stethoscope.

Watson the badass:

Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

Watson’s facials:

I know I’ve posted a lot about this but seriously Panin’s acting is really one of the highlights of this show, he was such an excellent actor, absolutely convincing in his role.

Brand new revised subtitles by yours truly!

Over the last two months I’ve gone through and edited all the English subs for the series, so hopefully everything will read a lot smoother! Any remaining mistakes are entirely my responsibility.

The humour:

Sort of reminiscent of the tone of the Soviet series, this series shares that light-heartedness, but it sure as hell isn’t a joke either. It’s not dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy. It doesn’t pull the cheap trick of taking advantage of your feels. The series sets out to tell a story and it tells a beautiful story and you will genuinely love the characters for who they are. And you will feel good about it. Yes, you will even love Lestrade.

Watson taking a bath:

The hilariously bad English (I laugh in good faith):

The creepy autopsy  man:

This weird ass scene:

Never has a show felt more genuine or more satisfying to watch when the final credits roll. This is a Sherlock Holmes that has had thought, love, and appreciation poured into its making, and it shows.

So, llamas, go forth! You can watch the entire series here. I hope you have as much fun as I did :)

The fight scene in the garage is really sort of like, ‘hHey, I’m telling you you’re kind of being all about yourself right now, let me explain to you how I am.’ But I think it’s one of those things where the argument led to a much more open form of communication and inherently strengthened the bond between the two characters, and I think we’ll end up seeing what happens with that,

His hands started to give out from holding his weight up for so long, so he hovered above on his elbows for support. That deepened the kiss. Tongue was everywhere, you wouldn’t even know what the goal was with this tongue. His crotch brushed against hers, a slight tough but enough to make him moan her name ever so loudly into her neck.

“Oh, Y/N,” he sighed into her neck. He placed small kisses on her neck and on her shoulder, moving back up to her neck. He was having the time of his life. As for her, she stared up at the ceiling. In lust? In desperation? Was she grabbing onto his shirt, desperate for a deeper touch? No. She stared at the ceiling, her eyes filled with boredom, her breathing stable, her body stiff as wood. The routine was simple and the same. Her five year long boyfriend would come over for steak and mashed potatoes for dinner with her parents, sometimes it was with mac and cheese when her mom felt adventurous! Then they’d go up to her room for their 7-8 study session, only to turn into an intense make out session. Or an intense make out session for him. But it never ended with sex. The Lord would not approve of premarital sex. Please do not break the routine.

He let out a grunt and placed one last kiss to her collarbone, letting out a deep sigh. He lifted his head above hers and touched their noses, rubbing his tip against hers. “God, I want to marry you,” he sighed. His eyes were still closed in lust as he savored her smell, the taste of her. Her eyes were wide open, her lips forming a fake smile to show him she was just as enthusiastic as he was. His eyes opened to meet hers and he returned a bigger smile to her. He kissed the tip of her nose and slowly made his way off of her, letting out a loud groan as he made his way up. He sat back on the bed and watched as she made her way up as well, her hair just slightly messed up from the slight head movements on the pillow, her lips glistening from spit and chap stick. Their eyes met and his smile turned into a smirk, proud of his work of art. She placed her hands in her lap and returned a small smile. He furrowed his eyebrows and reached up to move a strand of hair away from her face.

HARRY is eyeing up another big role – godfather to LIAM PAYNE and CHERYL’s baby boy.

He has revealed he has been in touch with his 1D bandmate since Cheryl gave birth to their child last month and says he would love to be involved in the lad’s life.

He said: “I spoke to Liam and he’s loving it. He said it’s going really well and everyone’s great. So I’m very happy for him.”

Asked about becoming godfather, he added: “I think it’s a roll of the dice, there are a lot of people Liam has in mind.

“I’m not going to add any extra pressure. If it came my way I would be honoured.”

Harry also spoke about his mum and stepdad’s reaction to hearing his debut album.

He told DARRYL MORRIS on Manchester radio station Key 103: “I had one piece of feedback from my stepdad, one of the songs on the album has a vocal effect in the background. And it finished and he went, ‘How did you get a duck in the studio?’ ”

On the other hand, Harry’s mum had a slightly different reaction.

He added: “She cried a couple of times which was good, I think that was good.”

For his sake I hope so.

“So soon?” Jheselbraum casts a look at at dimension 46’/, where Mabel Pines reaches to shake the hand of the monster they defeated only a year or so ago. “I would have expected at least a few more centuries.”

“I’m sure you know that time is relative.” The is a tone of amusement in the Ancient’s words. “It has been a lot longer than that.”

The Oracle takes that in, watching the events in Stanford’s home dimension play out, and hums in amusement, “‘A different form’,” she repeats to herself, “You couldn’t resist the irony, could you?”

The Axolotl chuckles, “Rather fitting, considering the many times humanity was deceived by him.”

Unbreakable (Part 2)

———————————————————————————————————
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: Torture, Swearing, Abduction
A/N: Prompt. Part 1. So, here is the second part of ‘Unbreakable’! Honestly having so much fun writing this one, let me know what you guys think! Feedback is always appreciated!
———————————————————————————————————

All Bucky could do was stand, frozen in place, watching you walk away from him once again.

“You want to know why she hates water?” A feminine voice murmured from behind him, causing him to jump, much like you had moments before.

“Wanda?” He asked, face a picture of confusion, “How the hell did you get up here?”

“I have my ways…” She smirked, twirling red mist in her fingertips, “But you didn’t answer my question, do you want to know?”

“Yes.” He answered immediately, hands clenching into fists as he took a step forward.

“It’s not pretty…” Wanda murmured, eyes clouding with concern, “I wouldn’t usually do this… but you need to understand what you did…”

“I know Wanda, just… show me.” He answered, sucking in a breath as Wanda placed her hands on his temple, red clouding his vision for a moment, before everything went black.

Eyes snapping open, Bucky immediately locked onto a familiar-looking young girl, who couldn’t be any older than 5.

“Y/N?” Bucky murmured, jaw going slightly slack at the scene in front of him, watching your small form cowered in the corner, knees drawn up to your chest as you sobbed into them. Eyes flickering around the room, he took in the peeling wallpaper and dingy carpet, frowning at the large scorch mark up one of the walls. Letting his hand run over some of the dusty pieces of furniture, he lingered for a moment over a familiar looking stuffed bear, lightly singed around the edges but otherwise fine. Just as he went to pick up the object, the door slammed open, only narrowly avoiding falling off its hinges.

“There it is!” A greying man stuttered, pointing towards your cowered form.

“Get it, before it can do any more damage!” Said another, cowering behind a large group of angry, yet scared, looking men.

Before Bucky could move, two of the men grabbed you by the arms, hauling you out of the room kicking and screaming.

“Daddy!” You wailed, tears streaming down your cheeks, “Don’t let them take me!”

The greying man seemed to slink back at your words, Bucky being able to easily identify him as your father. As Bucky felt the anger begin to build, the same red mist from earlier clouded his vision, dragging him back into the darkness.

Waking with a gasp, Bucky only felt more confused than before. Why did those men seem so scared of a small child? Why would your own father let them take you? Pushing himself up off the hard ground, he quickly realised, he wasn’t back at the compound. Eyes adjusting to the flickering light of the room, he couldn’t work out where the source of light was coming from. There was no lightbulb hanging from the ceiling, none on the walls, and no lamps. That’s when he realised. It was you. Sat cross-legged on the floor, the still young version of you let a small flame fill the palm of your hands. Letting a smile tug at his lips, Bucky watched your childlike wonder at your powers, knowing just how powerful you’d one day turn out to be.

Just as Bucky started to get lost in the moment, letting his eyes focus solely on the flame that was burning in your small hands, it was once again shattered by the sound of the large metal door crashing open, your small form immediately extinguishing the flame.

“Oh look, it’s the freak!” A malicious looking man spat out as he entered the room, your younger self immediately backing away as far as possible. “N’awww is the freak scared?” He laughed, sauntering over to you before dragging you up by the arm.

“No no no no no…” Your younger self sobbed, as the man dragged you towards a small, grimy looking tub. Turning on the rusted tap, water began to sputter out at a slow rate.

Realising what was happening, Bucky felt his jaw clench and hands ball up into fists.

Just as Bucky went to take an angry step forwards, the man hauled you up and dunked you under the water, ignoring the way you struggled in his arms, small hands clawing away at where his arms kept you submerged.

“Stop it! She’s a child! You’re going to kill her!” Bucky found himself yelling, trying to get to you, yet something was holding him back.

Finally bringing you out of the water, the man smirked as you struggled for breath.

“This is what you get for being a freak!” He spat, backhanding you across the face, not hesitating another moment before dunking you back under the water.

Letting out an enraged growl, Bucky went to storm at the man, the red mist stopping him in his tracks and dragging him back under.

Gasping awake, Bucky immediately shot up, eyes wild as he span around, trying to take in his surroundings.

“You’re back Barnes, it’s okay.” Wanda murmured, smiling sadly as Bucky let out a shaky breath and slumped to the floor, covering his face with his hands.

“It’s not okay!” He yelled, the sound only slightly muffled as he threw his head back, “That little girl, she…” He started, flinching slightly as Wanda rested a hand on his shoulder.

“She’s all grown up, Bucky.” Wanda murmured, “She’s okay.”

“But she’s not, is she! I…I fucked that up! She was okay, she was safe, and I had to go and literally throw her back into all that shit!” He shouted, tugging at his hair as he ranted.

“Then make it right Barnes!” Wanda loudly interjected, pulling his hands out of his hair, “You are the only one who can.” She said more softly, patting him on the shoulder before turning to leave.
