"One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage
if it isn't going to go off.
It's wrong to make promises you don't mean to keep.

- Anton Chekhov

One of the most impressive things about One Piece is Oda’s ability to consistently keep his story interconnected. He doesn’t just bring back old characters, he works people, places, and ideas into the manga well in advance, often reaching across hundreds of chapters. The collected parts here are far from everything. Whether it was Whitebeard’s first mention back in volume 18, written 9 entire years before his center position in the war of Marineford, or the prophecy that Luffy will destroy Fishman Island and the future importance of Noah, Oda has done an incredible job of building his world, connecting it together, and ensuring we always have things to look forward to.

One Piece 17th Anniversary: 2 - Villains/Antagonists

Path of a Pirate King is hard. There are many who will stand in your way; many enemies that you will have to surpass; many hardships you will have to go through. But stay strong and follow your path! Believe in yourself and in the people around you and you will overcome any enemy that comes your way.

One Piece 17th Anniversary: 3 - Art

It was noticeable from the start that Oda knows how to draw landscape very well but he continues to practice and perfect his art with every chapter. Over time, his style changed and that’s only natural - sensei drew over 700 chapters! And what best way to see his art development than in the characters, specially those who appear a lot - the Straw Hat crew. Oda progressed a lot during these 17 years and that can be well seen in the art style of the crew members in early chapters (especially Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Chopper). Oda is an amazing mangaka with unique art that captures many!

17 years of One Piece - the story so far…

one piece anniversary

day 6 » relationships/interactions

∟ luffy + his crew

okay i was going to write an analysis but let’s be quick: luffy’s relationship with his crew is super important because he even though he has a different relationship with each of them, he treats them all equally and respectfully, which in turn makes their relationships that much more precious. please don’t tell me he values any crew member more than another, because he’s probably die the same way if any of them left.

One Piece 17th Anniversary: 5 - Foreshadowing

Oda created so many mysteries in the manga that we’re all eager to find out! And knowing that manga is still just half done gets me excited because those mysteries WILL BE solved and I just can’t wait! But my real favorite one was the story about brothers where all mysteries were solved so far about them. I am so glad that Sabo’s back and I just can’t wait to see him interact with Luffy and the crew. Thank you for bringing this baby back, Oda! And no matter how many times I say it, it’s the truth - Oda is a genius and One Piece is a masterpiece!

But one question is still there:

Was this really Sabo in Loguetown (chapter 98) when Luffy was about to be executed?

Because Dragon appears right after, in chapter 100. Oda… you sneaky devil!
