TIPS:

  1. Remember that today’s day in age is different from how it was back then. So don’t stress about school too much.High school students today have the anxiety of what a mental patient in the insane asylum had in the 50s. Here’s also a thing to show how times have changed.
  2. Prioritize. List what needs to get done first and when. Sometimes getting the bigger/harder tasks is easier than conquering the smaller/easier tasks.
  3. Set times when certain projects need to be done and stick to that deadline.
  4. Turn your phone off or give it to your parents while doing work/studying. I know that we live in the age of technology and literally everything is at the touch of our fingertips. Honestly though you can wait on what your favorite celebrity has to say or if your crush liked your instagram photo. You’ll be more involved in that than you are into your work.
  5. If you have trouble in a certain subject and there is no assigned seating, take advantage of the front. I guarantee you’ll learn more.
  6. Ask your teacher what exactly you’ll need to know. If you’re taking notes during the year, write in the margins whether or not it will be tested. It will be easier to know what you will be tested on.
  7. Save your exams. Half the time your teachers use the same questions (or questions similar) from your exams on your midterms or finals.
  8. Don’t try to do homework straight afterschool if you can’t, despite what everyone says. Give yourself an hour, and try to get some exercise in. I find it stops me getting bored of sitting down. Not to mention helps me concentrate better.
  9. Don’t just read the material, write it, draw it, recite it, quiz yourself on it! Until you have the material down.
  10. Join clubs, sports, or organizations! You’re guaranteed to find friends in there. You’ll already have common interests. Start with that and go with the flow.
  11. College kids: If you don’t have assigned seating, and you have been sitting in the same seat for 2 weeks. That is you assigned seat now. Don’t move or you’ll screw everyone up and they will hate you.
  12. Color code things, such as your notes. If you want to see how I color code my notes message me and I’ll be happy to show you
  13. Be kind to one another.

I hope that helps!

Best,

Lena

What to do When you get a Bad Grade

1. Don’t mope around and keep beating yourself up. That will only distract you from your studying, and stop you from doing your best in other subjects.

2. Remember a bad grade is only a bad grade. It doesn’t mean you’re worthless or have failed as a person.

3. Try and find a way to let your feelings out through some kind of physical activity. For example, through running, jogging, or going to the gym.

4. Aim to do better on the next test you have. There will still be other tests where you can get a higher mark. Maybe see it as a wake-up call, and change your study habits.

5. Try and figure out why you received the bad grade. Do you need to study more, or to learn some new techniques? Did you not fully understand the course material? Did you just have a bad day, or were you tired or feeling sick?

6. Get extra help from your teachers if you need it. Most of them are happy to answer students’ questions.

7. Be determined to keep going and to persevere. It’s easier to do well with a good attitude.

Grade Tracker  by  thecollegekid

Hello guys! Since school’s about to start and I’ve reached a follower milestone, I decided to make my first printable (yay!). I created a simple two-column grade tracker, since I couldn’t find any grade tracker online that suits my ~aesthetic~ lol.

  • 5 colors (black, gray, blue, red, and yellow)
  • A5 (however, there are 2 grade trackers in each file, so use an A4 paper when printing)

Since this is my first printable, it would be great if I get some feedback (even if it’s negative ehe he). Hope you guys like it!!

UPDATE: I made a portrait version (with a few changes) which you can put it in a binder. :-) but I think I kind of screwed up with the margins and stuff *sobs* I’m still trying to find a way to correct it.

Anyway, it’s in the folder if you still want to try it out. I’m so grateful that everyone seems to like the tracker so far! Thank you guys!!

You stared at the grades online. Your eyes widened, and you felt tears pang from the corners. It, your professor, he told you you did fine. He told you that your final paper was the best you’ve written. You spent days writing it, and here was your grade.

D.

You slammed your hands against the desk, glaring at the computer screen. He lied. Your professor lied right to your face, and you couldn’t do anything about it.

“Liar…” You mumbled, your face slowly dropping. The anger slowly dissipated, and you felt the crushing reality. This was one of your required classes. And now, it would be on your transcript forever. Your fingers began to sweat, and you looked down.

“No…”

You were breaking down. You heard laughter come from the front of the apartment. The boys must have come home from practice. You sniffed, wiping your tears quickly from your face. You clicked out of the grades on the desktop. You heard their footsteps come closer, and looked in the mirror to make sure your face was clear. Your eyes were still red and your body was shaking, but you’d just make up an excuse.

Bitty can’t do everything.

He can’t.

It’s all but statistically guaranteed that, in the life of a college student, things are going to fall through the cracks and, in the life of a college student who’s also a varsity athlete, a lot of things are going to fall through the cracks.

Mostly, those things are his marks and, mostly, Bitty ignores them.

Mostly, they manifest in failed tests and botched presentations and papers that don’t quite reach the points they should, but Bitty never actually tells anybody about all of that because, mostly, it’s embarrassing.

He’s a student athlete, but so are the rest of his friends and they all get good grades, so it isn’t an excuse and, really, the bad marks don’t bother him.

They don’t bother him, because he doesn’t let them.

Marked papers never quite make it back to the Haus, and he never really gets around to checking his grades online, and, on the off chance that he does do well on something, Bitty is always a bit too excited and a bit too proud, but that never lasts long because another mark always comes back soon, and that’s never a good thing.

But it’s fine.

He can handle it.

He gets a bad mark, he doesn’t acknowledge it, he bakes a pie, he goes to practice, he Skype’s with Jack, he goes to bed, and he’s fine.

Wash, rinse, and repeat.

He never talks about the bad marks, and he never has to.

He always scrapes by in the end and he always does just well enough to stay on the hockey team and, in the end, that’s what counts.

Sometimes Bitty feels like the bad marks are weighing him down and drowning him, and sometimes he feels like he’s the stupidest person in the world, and sometimes he feels like he’s not cut out for college at all, but that’s all beside the point.

The point is, is that he’s fine.

If his friends can handle it then he can handle it too, and he’s fine.

i'm a high school freshman, and i'm taking GeoHonors, BioHonors, Advanced English, and Advanced Art... i'm overwhelmed. I attend a high school known for high stress levels and suicides.. Previously in my elementary+middle schools, i was a straight-A student, no biggie. I thought high school would be the same.. which is why I signed up for so many honors. I'm also playing competitive volleyball, studying for the october ACT (for a summer camp), and preparing for my final piano exam. help? ~Kass

Hey Kass! Hope you’re doing well. Shelby here. :)

You sure got a lot going on. Sometimes that can be good & other times not so much. But you do sound very smart and you do seem like you got a ton going for you which is a plus.

I’ve got some resources & links to show you today in hopes it helps you.

Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress

Feeling emotional and nervous or having trouble sleeping and eating can all be normal reactions to stress. Engaging in healthy activities and getting the right care and support can put problems in perspective and help stressful feelings subside in a few days or weeks. Some tips for beginning to feel better are:

  • Take care of yourself.
  • Talk to others. Share your problems and how you are feeling and coping with a parent, friend, counselor, doctor, or pastor.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol may seem to help with the stress. In the long run, they create additional problems and increase the stress you are already feeling.
  • Take a break. If your stress is caused by a national or local event, take breaks from listening to the news stories, which can increase your stress.
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals
  • Exercise on a regular basis
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out

Recognize when you need more help. If problems continue or you are thinking about suicide, talk to a psychologist, social worker, or professional counselor.

ACT Test Guide

Things to Remember:

  • Difficult questions are worth the same points as easy questions.
  • If you answer 53% of the questions correctly, you get an average score.
  • There is no penalty for wrong answers - guess if you don’t know.
  • Budget your time; don’t spend too much time on a question.
  • Read each question throughly and know what it’s asking for.
  • Mark up the booklet to help you - annotate and show your work if that helps you

English:

  • Questions often test for redundancy and irrelevance.

Math:

  • The first time, go through and do the questions that are easier and faster to do.
  • Then, go back and tackle questions that you don’t know how to do or will take more time for you to complete.
  • Look at the answers and plug them in. (start with the middle answer)
  • Substitute numbers for variables.
  • Look at the question like a logic puzzle, not a math problem.

Reading:

  • Skim the reading to get a general sense of the passage.
  • Answer questions that refer to specific words or sentences, and then move on the questions that require you to read paragraphs.
  • Focus on main points and ideas. (usually in first and last sentences of each paragraph)
  • Pay attention to details that might be important to the story.
  • Think about why the author wrote the passage and
  • Mark up the booklet - annotate! (as mentioned above)

Science:

  • what the labels mean
  • what the table shows
  • trends
  • units of measurements
  • data representation (charts and tables)
  • research summaries
  • conflicting viewpoints (usually asked to compare and contrast)

Writing:

  • formulate and opinion
  • maintain focus on your topic
  • ability to defend your opinion using reasoning and supporting ideas
  • organize your ideas in a logical way
  • use language clearly and effectively

Hope this helps. :) xx

  • Don’t tick off your teacher, follow the rules to an extent, get to class on time, respect your classmates and teachers. you know, just be a decent person.

  • be positive!!! and not just for the first week or so, keep the positivity going throughout the whole school year. if you don’t believe in yourself then why should anyone else?

  • “you can do it, wildcat, i believe in u” — something troy bolton said one time probably definitely

  • Smile and introduce yourself to people- whether you’re sitting next to them or have seen them in more than one of your classes. Everyone likes to make new friends (even if we’re too shy to do it most of the time).

  • Find which clubs look interesting and go to their first meetings- there’s never an obligation to join, but you might meet a lot of new friends.

  • Get advice from other students on if your classes/teachers are difficult and figure out which ones you’ll need to work the hardest in.

  • this or this. it’ll whip your ass into gear. you name a list of websites that distract you, set a timer, and bam. no more hour long study breaks. the best - or worst - part is, it can’t be undone by the application, by deleting the application, or by restarting the computer. you just gotta wait, and if you’re going to wait, you may as well study.

  • goals. when you sit down to study, write down everything you’re going to do. then do it. aimlessly staring at your books won’t do shit.

  • something to listen to. i suggest movie scores, song covers by the vitamin string quartet

  • a queue. if you’re really obsessed with keeping your blog up to date, set aside some time, fatten up your queue, and let your blog run itself for a few days.

  • breaks. during your breaks, dance, run around, work out, go for a walk, talk to your friends, call your mom. going back on the internet is an easy way to get out of the mood, so i wouldn’t suggest it.

  • tea and coffee - if not for the caffeine, then for the feeling of cozying up with your text books and feeling studious.

  • a place to study. it doesn’t matter if it’s in a coffee house, a library, or your kitchen table. as long as your bed’s not in sight and tempting you into a nap, you’re good.

  • your mental health is more important than your grades/school work

  • you are fabulous

  • they’re probably not even paying attention when you give a presentation

  • one friend is better than no friends

  • eat a healthy lunch

  • take care of yourself

  • please stay safe

  • your mental health is more important than your grades/school work

  • I love you

Nico let tears stream down his face as he lay beside his daughter Allegra, who was finally allowed to join their family that day. He wept out of love for his adopted daughter (the paperwork was made official and she was allowed to live with him as of that morning) and he wept for the fact that his husband had never met her in person yet.

Will was deployed overseas and had to go back before things had moved along too far in the adoption process. The most he had seen were pictures. He was supposed to video call tonight, but Nico knew that plans like that were very loose. Which is why Nico always kept his phone on hand, always ready for a call or text from his husband, even if it got him in trouble at work sometimes.

He ran to his computer as quickly as he could when he heard it ringing. Allegra stirred but didn’t wake up. He ran his fingers through his hair as he hit accept, his smile beaming. “Hey,” Nico breathed out a content sigh when he finally saw his husband again.

“Where’s my little girl?” Will was dressed in his uniform, and the bags under his eyes were impressive. He clearly hadn’t shaved in a week or two. The room was loud around him, but he had headphones in.

“She’s asleep, but I’ll go get her. One moment,” Nico put the laptop on the coffee table and went back to their room to grab their two year old daughter, waking her up in the process. “I’m sorry, but someone very special wants to meet you.” She looked confused but followed Nico to the living room, sitting on his lap on the couch. “This is your Dad, Allegra. Can you say hi?”

Will didn’t even try to hide the tears that were welling up in his eyes, and his next words sounded quite choked. “Hey beautiful! Your Papa and I have waited so long for you to join our little family.”

Allegra had grown up neglected, and her speech was seriously delayed and we already had her on the waiting list for speech therapy. “Da.” She leaned against Nico’s chest and her eyes were closing, it was late and she’d had a very long, eventful day.

“That’s right, I’m your Dad.”

“I miss you so much.” Nico hid the pain behind his words.

“I-” The connection was lost.

I know that school can get hard at times and sometimes it may feel like you’re trapped. I hope these links can help at least one person out. I know that they’ve helped me. (:

State College Gothic (Featuring True Experiences)
  • There are bathrooms on the first floor of your dorm building. They are impeccably clean. You have never seen anyone else use them. Even so, you always get the last paper towel in the dispenser.
  • Maintenance just finished fixing all the washers in the laundry room. Still, only two work.
  • There are six people living in your suite. You know the name of your roommate. As for the others, you cannot determine which is which. You move out at the end of the year just as clueless as when you moved in.
  • You have spent hundreds of hours in classes and studying for your major. No matter how much you try, you cannot remember a thing.
  • Students speak of the dog that wanders around campus. Campus PD has stated that they have never seen a dog fitting that description, be it in person or on security footage.
  • The fire alarm goes off at 2:00 AM. You evacuate the building. An hour later, you are let back inside. The clock reads 2:02 AM.
  • Your professor asks you your name when you go to talk to him. You have had him six times in three years. He does not remember you.
  • You venture up to the fourth floor of the library. All the lights are off. No one is around. As you round the corner, you see a text book lying in the middle of the floor. On the page, in big, scribbled letters, is the word “FUCK”.
  • In the middle of the night, you hear thumping from the room above you. The next morning, you remember that you are on the top floor.
  • The CVS across the street closes at 10:00. You have never seen the lights off. Sometimes, you see a man walking out with bags around 12:30.
  • It is 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Despite your two fans and open window, your room is still 80 degrees.
  • You go to a school-hosted party. When you arrive, the decorations are up and the dance lights are on. No one else is in sight. You go home after an hour. No one ever showed up.
  • Your phone rings. You have a conversation for a few minutes, while you remain unmoving. The reception cuts out at random. There is no discernible reason why.
  • Stress and other factors get to you, and you go to see a counselor on campus. In time, the counselor then tells you that you have exceeded the number of visits allowed. You can only count four sessions.
  • You check your grade online. An hour later, you see it again. It is ten points lower. No new grades have been added.
  • You get an email from the president of your school. You have never seen this name before. It is not the same as the name from the last email the president sent out.
  • Before your 8:00 AM class, you are the only one there. A little girl walks into the room. She stares at you for a moment, then immediately exits.
Wammy's House Headcannons (based on my high school)

//So I went to an intensely competitive public school in a really small town, which led to some interesting Wammy-esque scenarios//

(Inspired by a very similar post by @yagami-raito-kun)

• Matt once photoshopped Roger’s face onto Mount Rushmore, and Roger signed it and made it the background of his computer

• Mello once got detention for slapping Near in the face with a slice of pizza after an intense debate on the core reason behind the fall of Rome, while Matt repeatedly shouted “Bush did it!”

• The kids used to be able to track their grades online, but Roger had to take it down because Mello would constantly check it in class and freak out

• Roger sometimes tried to speak to the students in the different languages they were learning, which once led to a duck being released in the library

• Mello and Matt had a life long competition to see who could climb through the window and run all the way around the orphanage before the teacher noticed them: Mello won twice

• During an assembly Matt got up on stage with Roger and started singing Thrift Shop

• The entire orphanage had an unhealthy obsession with Badminton; it was the one gym unit that even Near went hardcore in

• One day before finals, Mello and Matt organized a school-wide protest which ended up forcing Roger to give them all a half day

• Matt once handed in a 15 page paper on Call of Duty to see if the teacher actually read through all of their essays: he got a 93

• Near once classically conditioned his math class to laugh whenever someone said the letter theta: the trigonometry unit was highly amusing

• Matt found out that if you downloaded minecraft onto a flashdrive it would work on the school computers, so he ran an underground business selling them

• One time the Latin class reenacted the death of Julius Caesar on March 15th during lunch without telling anyone. And everyone just ignored them

• Matt would hack into teachers accounts, and after the first five detentions Roger just let him do it

• The librarian essentially adopted Near and fed him granola bars whenever he stayed through meals

• Matt and Mello once created an explosion in chemistry and the teacher gave them extra credit for setting the fire alarms off

• On Halloween, Matt managed to convince Roger to switch clothes with him for the day

• Near got really into origami at one point and just left cranes everywhere and the whole orphanage went crazy trying to find them all

• For a prank, Mello coated all of the hallways in glitter, and for months afterward, people were still finding it in unholy places

Philip had been gathering his things over the past five minutes so slowly it was painful, but this was a “the bell doesn’t dismiss you, I dismiss you” teacher, and he just wanted to get out of the school. The last thing he needed was a twenty-minute lecture and a detention.
