I just wanted to ask what this Cabal shebang is? Is it a book series because all the stuff you've been drawing about him look so up my alley ;v;

Ahh!! Yes! :D Johannes Cabal is a book series by Jonathan L Howard! It’s a supernatural dark humor fantasy series about an amoral necromancer and his many uh, misadventures. They’re my absolute favorite books!!

Here’s the Amazon summary for Book 1, Johannes Cabal The Necromancer:

A charmingly gothic, fiendishly funny Faustian tale about a brilliant scientist who makes a deal with the Devil, twice.

Johannes Cabal sold his soul years ago in order to learn the laws of necromancy. Now he wants it back. Amused and slightly bored, Satan proposes a little wager: Johannes has to persuade one hundred people to sign over their souls or he will be damned forever. This time for real. Accepting the bargain, Johannes is given one calendar year and a traveling carnival to complete his task. With little time to waste, Johannes raises a motley crew from the dead and enlists his brother, Horst, a charismatic vampire to help him run his nefarious road show, resulting in mayhem at every turn.

Book 5, The Fall of the House of Cabal is just about to be released, so there’s a little Fanfest going on for it! :D Y’all should definitely pick up the series if you have a chance~ >:Dc

Okay, so thus far, The Darkest Minds movie has been this super intangible thing that I haven’t fully processed is actually happening. But Alexandra Bracken just tweeted that Amandla Stenberg  was cast as Ruby Daly and I want to sob tears of joy and scream from the mountaintops. THIS IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE NEWS.

She’s a brilliant actress and Ruby is one of my favorite literary heroines ever so I cannot even put into words how excited this makes me.

And if there is anyone here reading this who doesn’t know what the heck I’m talking about PLEASE GO READ THIS SERIES. It’s one of my favorites of all time. It has one of the most genuine casts of characters I’ve ever experienced and a brilliantly terrifying world. I’ve written two songs about it. I just. Love these books with every ounce of my being.

Hi Nancy. I own all 16 volumes of Bokura Ga Ita (We Were There) in Japanese as well as all 16 volumes digitally in English. I would love for shojobeat to consider publishing the fan book as well as the art book in English. I realize the series has ended but it is my all time second favorite manga after VK and would love to see these items in English. I am hoping beyond hope that you guys will translate and publish Vampire Knight Memories into English!

Thank you for supporting We Were There! It’s one of my favorite series too. I think it was published it ahead of its time for the US audience.

We have published some art books and fan books in the past, but there has to be a great demand for the series for the ancillary books to do well. Your request is noted. (^_^)

honestly when i hear your name i think of the mythological warrior! she was a celtic warrior queen and taught scathach, if you've ever heard of either. according to one of my favorite book series (secrets of the immortal nicholas flamel), she has bright red hair, green eyes, and is pretty harsh on the surface! i find it kinda funny actually, because, knowing that, the first time i saw your name i actually pronounced it correctly in my head!

Yes haha, I was waiting for the one who knew that! In my knowledge she is Scathach’s twin sister, and rival, and they trained together on the Isle of Skye, a place where I greatly desire to visit. Lately she has been my inspiration.

I have also read that book series actually! I really enjoyed it. It was cool that my name was in there.

I personally do not have red hair, even though it was quite auburn before I cut and dyed it but I do not really consider that red hair. I have green eyes though ;).

“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines

Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines

In rain or shine

They left the house at half past nine

The smallest one was Madeline.”

-Ludwig Bemelmans, Madeline, 1939

I would like to share a sampling of the graduation project that I had so much fun illustrating! It’s an old series, but one of my childhood favorites. There has been a TV series and a live action film, but never a modern-ish animated feature, and it was a bit of a passion project to imagine what it would look like, down to the character designs and the actual scenes.

Also, I might have some good news to announce soon… keeping my fingers crossed in the meantime! ♪

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Book 4 is probably my favorite simply because I love the Triwizard champions. You guys have no idea how much I want to see an AU where Cedric doesn’t die and Harry teams up with the other Triwizard champions to kick Voldemort’s ass. Fleur can be the fabulous badass who won’t take shit from anyone, Viktor is the brooding awkward boy, Cedric would be the one keeping the peace, and Harry is the baby who’s either confused or secretly judging as he watches the older three bicker.

The only romance involves Krum occasionally cornering Cedric for advice on how to woo Hermione when everything’s done.

Beautiful cast of American Gods (IMDB)

The series will focus on the mysterious Shadow, a man who is released from prison a few days early after serving a three-year sentence for bank robbery when his beloved wife Laura is killed in a car accident. Flying home for the funeral, Shadow is seated next to a man who introduces himself only as Mr. Wednesday, and this man knows more about Shadow’s life, both past and present, than is possible. Shadow comes to learn that Wednesday is, in fact, the god Odin of Norse mythology and that all of the gods that mankind has ever believed in are alive in human form and live among regular people. Shadow is soon thrust into a gathering conflict between the Old gods and the so-called “New gods”, the gods of money and technology who believe there is no longer room on Earth for the old gods.

It is time to continue our mini-series of Andrew Lang fairy books! This post will be featuring three of these beauties: The Olive Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, and The Yellow Fairy Book.

First up is my personal favorite, The Olive Fairy Book, which was published in 1907. The cover features two fairies: one that is the focal point of the cover design, and another smaller one riding a bat that can be seen in the lower right-hand corner. Luckily, this is another one of Lang’s fairy tales in our holdings that still has its dust cover! The back of the cover advertises the previous books in this series, along with other stories Lang edited.

Published in 1892, The Green Fairy Book was originally supposed to be the last in a three part series of fairy books by Lang. Lang states in the preface “To the Friendly Reader - This is the third, and probably the last, of the Fairy Books of many colours.” It is safe to say that the popularity of these tales attributed to the continuation of the series.

Finally, we have The Yellow Fairy Book, which was published in 1894. Along with the fairy design on the cover, this book also has a little cat and mouse image on the spine. The last illustration, which comes from The Yellow Fairy Book, is from the Estonian fairy tale “The Dragon of the North”.

a 1942 Merrie Melodies cartoon produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions and directed by Chuck Jones. It was released by Warner Bros. on September 19, 1942. The cartoon is a parody of the Rover Boys, a popular juvenile fiction book series of the early 20th century

So, we’re far off from when I would normally do a Remembered Classics segment in the rotation but this cartoon is the hot new tumblr meme and I desperately crave attention. This might just give it to me but what would really make me happy– is getting to talk about one of my all time favorite theatrical cartoons, no lie.

I love this cartoon; the delivery of jokes, the visual gags, it’s all pure Warner Bros zaniness with some absolutely hilarious writing.

to this day I still get a laugh out of this particular bit–

It pretty much encapsulates what’s so good about the cartoon, in that it’s an outrageous parody of cliched dashing hero saves the girl stories that literally everybody was doing. In fact, this whole cartoon is a parody of a book series called The Rover Boys which is probably one of the most white-bread stories of rich privilege and shitting on minorities that I’ve ever seen. It was pretty famous though but not as much as the likes of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew.

Anyway, in true Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies fashion, this cartoon turns all of those cliches  on their heads and makes for something utterly hilarious from start to finish. Even the narration was funny. You could tell this was a work of passion, and it was; director Chuck Jones put everything he had into it. And he did it in the most petty way possible.

Yeah, there’s a very prevailing, and mostly true rumor that his superiors weren’t happy with his body of work. In retaliation he sought to give them the finger by making the same shit that everybody and their grandmother was making at the time and make it cheap and limited as well. Producers ended up hating the cartoon and wanted to fire Jones, but audiences loved it, and along with that he was considered far to valuable to let go so they kept him on. Damn… all I can say is way to go.

  • In 1994, the cartoon was voted #49 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field.
  • Jones would later remark that The Dover Boys was the first cartoon of his he found to be funny
  • The cartoon is one of a handful from WB to enter the public domain, due to United Artists - which had bought Associated Artists Productions (whose library was later absorbed into WB’s own television unit) - not renewing the copyright.
  • The characters Tom, Dick, and Larry would later make cameo appearances on the 1990s Fox and WB network seriesAnimaniacs, alongside Slappy Squirrel in “Frontier Slappy,” while singing discrediting lyrics about Daniel Boon, the Warners in “Magic Time”, and in Wakko’s Wish
  • A short clip of this cartoon is featured in the opening credits of “Less Than Hero”, an episode of another Fox TV show, Futurama
  • They also appeared cheering in the stands late in the mixed animation/live-action movie Space Jam
  • A segment of the cartoon is featured briefly in an episode of Agent Carter where it is used as part of a subliminal messaging tool of the Black Widow program.

I don’t care if this gets seen or not at the height of meme popularity, i’m just happy to get to talk about it!

MD: It was fun, and also a little surreal, to imagine the characters from the old series all grown up. Everyone always assumes my bald head was the inspiration for young Aang, so when it came time to draw forty-year-old Aang, Bryan took one look at my beard and worked it into the design. Maybe someday I’ll look as tall and buff as Aang.
JDS: Sokka and Toph were my absolute two favorite characters in the
Avatar universe, and while i had nothing to do with their older redesigns, as a fan I was super excited to see what Il-Kwang and Jin-Sun came up with. You’ll notice Toph wearing the early version of the Metalbenders’ cable harness. I think the designers really knocked it out of the park. How cool was it to see all these characters you know and love as adults?!
Designs by Ki-Hyun Ryu, Il-Kwang Kim, and Jin-Sun Kim. Color by Sylvia Filcak-Blackwolf.
