one of the most well written characters

Writer Appreciation Day!

Um, apparently I almost missed fic writer appreciation day??? Unacceptable. I apologize in advance for any folks I miss… you are still amazing!

@thesecondsealwrites. Just… read everything she ever writes. Ever. She is an absolute love, and an unparalleled talent in this community. Her most recent work, Heatwaves, is an absolute treasure for summer reading, but I highly recommend everything even as far back as Acts of Reclamation. P.S., she also writes some pretty amazing original work.

@slothquisitor is my most favored slothy pal (and a wonderful friend, sloths aside), and another one you just need to read everything she has ever written. My favorite is A Class Act, but I am also a shameless enabler of her Mara x Branson fics. I am also going to continue shamelessly enabling this ship. ;)

@rhetoricalrogue is one of the most thoughtful OC creators I have ever seen. Her characters are well-rounded, engaging, and interesting. My personal favorites are Ravena, Rolfe, and Vincent and I love her fic The Griffon and the Raven. It made me fall in love with the Ravena/Blackwall pairing.

@saibrarutherford is one of the sweetest people ever, and recently started writing a wonderful fic titled The One Who Will Live On, and also has Love in the Time of Corypheus. I have had the privilege of beta-ing her work; a gift I do not take lightly. I highly recommend reading her work!

@welseykels… her Mira and Alistair pairing just gives me life, and she was kind enough to let me co-opt Mira to pair with Alistair when I re-shipped Cataline (and can I just say: they work together so much better). I’m not even sure where I can begin with recommendations for her, so here’s her masterlist. Just read it all. <3

@missragdoll84… my best friend and worst enabler… I know it isn’t quite ready yet, but I have full confidence in the brilliance of your current WIP, and I cannot wait to see it shared with everyone. :D <3

@novamm66 is such a darling person, and it has been a joy to watch her work improve and grow in the short time I have been reading her work. She is also an artist whose talent continues to improve as well!

And to all the writers out there… thank you. <3 Thank you for sharing your words and your stories and your dreams with us.

Favourite muse(s) you’ve written: Most of my muses have been Original Characters off of tumblr. Artemis Grell was a one-armed thief who managed to last a really long time. Fitz Kreiner is a character from Doctor Who that traveled with the Eighth Doctor.  I did play Eight for a time, but I think the fit with James is a lot better. Doris Gunderson is another muse who I adore playing, though I roleplay her most often off of tumblr as well.

What inspired you to take on your current muse (that you are posting this on): Originally I had this AU of the Eighth Doctor that was fobwatched, and gradually that morphed into the beginnings of the character that became James. When I realized that this was a character I wanted to write full time and much preferred to Eight, I took the time to consider a fitting backstory that would keep all of the personality traits that made him inherently James. I also made an effort to add new things that would provide future chances for him to develop. James’s story is always being finessed. :)

What are your favourite aspects of your current muse: James is such a quiet soul and wholeheartedly believes in the good of humanity. He’s not totally naive, but he wants to care for people and be cared for. He’s soft, and I haven’t gotten the chance to play a character like that in a very long time. Slipping into his character makes me feel refreshed and hopeful.

What’s your biggest inspiration when it comes to writing: I adore Mary Stewart and inhaled her Crystal Cave series when I was young. The way she paints pictures with her words and creates an overall mood and atmosphere to the scenes in her books is incredible. I’m also really inspired by the soft thoughtfulness of Victorian poets because they have a lot of the same double meanings to their writing as some of the major authors out there. Finally, I took several classes at Pixar that gave me a LOT to think about as far as characterization and storytelling.

Favourite types of threads: I’ve stumbled into SO many threads that I didn’t think would become as enthralling as they were, honestly. I love all sorts of stories. Anything that challenges both muses or allows them to grow as characters.  There are such a wide variety of types of threads that can offer that. I am particularly fond of fantasy-based threads, though. :)

Biggest struggle in regards to your current muse: James isn’t confrontational and he’s a bit of a goodie-two-shoes. This means a lot of times I have to find other ways to have conflict or excitement arise in a thread. It’s definitely gotten me thinking more creatively, though!

We Bare Bears is Underrated

As Steven Universe, Star vs The Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, Samurai Jack, Rick and Morty and Adventure Time is getting much praise for being great Cartoon shows, We Bare Bears deserve much praise as those shows. It’s not action pack or story driven like them but it’s still great to watch with tons of reasons why

1) It doesn’t have plot, but most of the ep. are really heartwarming, and great humor

and it can give the FEELZ

2)  Each character are really well written, making them interesting, even the side-characters are entertaining.

Like Darell,

Sure he looks like a dweeb, overweight, and doesn’t look interesting but he’s very kind-hearted and easy going. What makes him a very good character is he’s the one let the bears get back together again by getting himself arrested.

3) It’s really cute, especially the cub episodes!

4) I may have said that it doesn’t have a plot going on but it does have flashback episodes, or small bits of it that been added to a episode about them being cubs like “Yuri and the Bear”

or “Burrito”

5) It’s very realistic, I know there’s talking bears, a koala, and a Sasquatch but still very realistic like instead of Chloe being this an inventor like Phineas and Ferb or Dexter from Dexter Labatory, she’s just a ten-year-old prodigy

Out of all shows I’ve watched, as of right now, I find this show to be very charming, lighthearted, fun and actually funny to watch.

How to avoid informed traits

You know those characters that are constantly referred to so smart or so capable or so sensitive (etc. etc.) by other characters or in the narration? And every time it comes up you find yourself shaking your head or rolling your eyes because the character in question  either is as bland as boiled potatoes or constantly acts in ways that contradict those claims without explanation?

That’s what is commonly called an “informed trait”. You’re told the character is a certain way (or has a certain ability), but there is more or less nothing in the text to back that up.

It goes the other way around, too, with informed flaws that are supposed to make a character more relatable or interesting - think almost every romantic comedy leading lady who is supposedly “shy” and “clumsy”, but in a cute, endearing way that only ever comes up when the plot asks for it.

It’s frustrating, distracting, incredibly dull and at times downright insulting to the reader to encounter a story where one or more characters have a bad case of this, but unfortunately, it’s a pretty common weakness even in otherwise strong, well-written stories with interesting and complex character concepts.

Since characters and how the reader feels about them (whether they are supposed to relate to them, look up to them or feel repulsed by them) can really make or break a story, informed traits are an easy trap to fall into and many a writer’s Achilles heel.

So, how to avoid them?

This is where the trusty old “Show, don’t tell” comes in. You have most likely been told before that it’s usually better to go for subtlety and leave something to the reader’s imagination than to spell it out, and that is true.

It’s challenging to imply something without outright saying it. You have to get creative with the details you want to put into your story to get a point across by relying on your audience’s ability to read between the lines, and while it’s absolutely worth it to go the extra mile, you also run the risk of making your narrative too stilted and contrived instead.

However, there is a fairly simple trick to make your characterization feel more natural and insert it into the story smoothly:

Stop thinking of your characters as possessing certain traits and start thinking of their personalities as a collection of habits, preferences and specific abilities.

It might not sound like that big of a difference, but it will make translating your character traits into text much, much easier and save you a lot of trouble while editing.

Some examples:

  1.  A “smart” character

This can mean a lot of things. You could have a character who is booksmart, learns quickly, reads a lot, can retain information easily and access it when needed, but has trouble applying theoretical knowledge in real life, someone who entertains their friends by telling them about weird facts and trivia, someone who can still recite poems they had to learn by heart when they were ten, someone with a tendency to talk in such complex run-on sentences they frequently forget what they were talking about half-way through.
Or you could have a character who is good at problem-solving instead, who likes puzzles and riddles, who gleefully obsesses over odd problems to find even odder solutions, but thinks so far out of the box in order to remain engaged in their current task they often miss the forest for the trees.

  2. A “brave” character

Try to instead make a character who can never resist a challenge, who is a thrill-seeker and went bungee jumping about a dozen times already, who enjoys dragging their friends on the most dangerous looking rides in an amusement park and endlessly teases them about how pale they went afterwards. Make someone who simply cannot stand by when they see someone else get bullied, someone with a collection of scars they wear proudly and a story to tell about each one.

  3. A “shy” character

Forget about characters who blush prettily when spoken to and that’s it. Instead, write about a character who can’t make eye contact without forcing themselves to, who stumbles over their own words when talking to strangers, who is afraid of wearing bright colours because it might draw attention to them, someone who is humble and polite, but distant and comes across as cold or uncaring because they have tendency to hide their insecurity by retreating into themselves, even though seeming rude is the last thing on their mind.

Insert these habits into the story wherever they fit best. Be consistent in the portrayal of your character’s behaviour, even as character development kicks in. Adjust deliberately, but reasonably. After all, old habits die hard, so having your character break with one, however minor, can be a powerful moment with just as much emotional resonance as a flashy, dramatic scene meant to convey the same sentiment, and any “big” scenes will likely feel more organic if the reader has already seen traces of the necessary character changes before.

honestly, the fandom seems spilt on lancelot. one half saying to stop shipping it because its problematic, the other half literally not giving a fuck. im sitting here genuinely curious and interested. im not saying i ship it and i want it to be canon, i think that it has a lot of potential. i mean, anything can happen with lotor’s character.

i want lotor to be evil and manipulative. i want lotor to be genuinely horrible and screw up everything the paladins have worked hard on. i want him to spilt the team up and i want him to get into their minds. i want him to break the characters and push them to their limits. i want him to flush out their traits and have them grow. i want him to be one of the most horrific and well written antagonist of a kid’s cartoon show.

however, in the lance portion of this, i want lance to grow as well. perhaps lotor offers him to join their side as many of the other theories have already said. i want lance to fall prey to lotor’s praise and shower of appreciation. i want lance to know that this is wrong, he shouldnt do this, but he is. i want lance to make the decision to leave the team and join lotor leaving them hurt and broken in his wake. i want to see keith’s heart shatters as lance walks away from the team, away from him.

i want tHE ANGST.

i want lance to secretly be working with allura in a plot to overthrow lotor from the inside. i want lotor and lance dance around each other in a deadly game, neither of them knowing what the other is doing. both of them think the other one has really fallen for them. (maybe even sometimes the line between whats fake and real get blurred…) i want lance to be undercover for months. the team losing complete hope over him after they meet and fight. i want them to fight, and pidge and hunk crying thinking they truly lost lance to the other side. i want keith to watch as lance kisses lotor and being pissed that lance left. that he let him go.

finally, i want lance to show his true colors when the other paladins think they have lost and lotor won. i want lance to turn on lotor the only think between them is his bayard. i want lance to kICK SOME ASS.

and then, after all of that, i want the paladins to bE PISSED THE FUCK OFF THAT LANCE AND ALLURA PLANNED ALL OF THIS SHIT AND MADE THEM THINK LANCE HAD GONE BAD

The Ten Types of Supernatural Episode:  an Illustrated Guide.

1.  The Generic:

This is the kind of episode fandom veterans fondly refer to as “Old School Supernatural.”  Features a 70s rock soundtrack, a classic (yet in hindsight, relatively nonthreatening) ghost or monster, comically bad special effects, and body horror.  Probably from season one.

Examples:  “Wendigo,” “Bloody Mary,” “Bugs.”

2.  The Classic:

Not to be confused with the Generic, the Classic is the kind of episode that everybody remembers and everybody loves.  It’s infinitely quotable, carefully toes the line between hilarious and absurd, and is still frequently blogged about even if it came out 7+ years ago.  Almost definitely features Gabriel.

Examples:  “Tall Tales,” “Mystery Spot,” “Changing Channels.”

3.  The Life Changer:

Once you see this episode, you will never be the same.  Whether it introduces a beloved character, kills them, or raises them from the dead, the Life Changer is the episode that either sends you into a downward spiral of unhealthy obsession, or merely accelerates it.

Examples:  “Lazarus Rising,” “Abandon All Hope,” “Lucifer Rising.”

4.  The Black Comedy:

Though much of Supernatural revolves around a unique cocktail of horror and humor, the Black Comedy is almost impossible to miss.  From famine-induced cannibalism, to a would-be antichrist, to a killer pagan Santa Clause, the humor of these episodes is darker than Batman’s worst nightmares and probably at least twice as depressing, yet manages to be oddly magical all the same.

Examples:  “Yellow Fever,” “My Bloody Valentine,” “A Very Supernatural Christmas.”

5.  The Crack Fic:

These are the episodes whose only real purpose is to make you wonder if Supernatural is some kind of elaborate fever dream.  Neither advance the plot nor provide much further insight into its characters, but still entertaining in terms of pure absurdity.

Examples:  “Man’s Best Friend with Benefits,” “It’s a Dog Dean Afternoon,” most of season seven.

6.  The WELL-WRITTEN Crack Fic:

Despite having the same brand surreal absurdity of the Crack Fic, the WELL-WRITTEN Crack Fic not only serves to further character development, but will also tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh, and very likely make you cry.

Examples:  “Monster Movie,” “Sam, Interrupted,” “Hunteri Heroici.”

7.  The Meta Fiction:

Some shows break the fourth wall, but this one comes at it with a sledgehammer.  From directly addressing the fandom and its terminology to the show itself, the Meta Fiction episode is usually surprisingly enjoyable and well-done, if you can get past the sheer mindfuck of it.

Examples:  “Fanfiction,” “The French Mistake,” “Don’t Call me Shurley.”

8.  The Tearjerker:

This one specializes in one thing and one thing only, and that is emotionally destroying you.  May disguise itself as other kinds of episodes, like the Crack Fic and the Meta Fiction, before swiftly and efficiently moving in for the kill.

Examples:  “the Rapture,” “After School Special,” “the Man Who Would be King.”

9.  The Tragedy Porn:

Do you enjoy watching your favorite characters suffer and die horribly for no particular reason?  No?  Well in that case, you picked the wrong show, my friend.  From the heart wrenching pain of Dean being forced to kick a newly-human Cas out of the bunker, to the soul-destroying injustices that were Kevin and Charlie, the Tragedy Porn is an episode that exists for no other reason than to make you want to crawl into a hole and die.

Examples:  “I’m No Angel,” “Dark Dynasty,” “Rock and a Hard Place.”

10.  The Grand Finale:

The Tearjerker, made ten times worse with the addition of “Carry on my Wayward Son” and a cliffhanger ending.  Specializes in metaphorically ripping your heart out, making you sob like a pre-adolescent girl, and psyching you up for the next season, no matter how emotionally exhausted you may already be.

Examples:  “No Rest For the Wicked,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Swan Song.”

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is one of the best kdrama of all time and it continues to be overlooked as hell. It doesn’t even rank top 20 in Korea despite having one of the most well-written, organically developed plot AND characters for a kdrama. This is the first kdrama I’ve ever seen where they actually show a healthy, supportive relationship between the main leads without using over-exaggerated storylines to drive the romance. Also it’s one of the few Korean dramas that actually talks about mental health issues without downplaying it or use it as a plot device for ratings. I honestly love this drama so much and it deserves so much more love. It’s so fluffy and fun but also serious and relatable when it’s important.

A Heartfelt Thanks

Dear DreamWorks, Studio Mir, Josh Keaton, Jeremy Shada, Steven Yeun, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Tyler Labine, Kimberly Brooks, Rhys Darby, Neil Kaplan, Cree Summer, Keith Ferguson, Jake Eberle, Mick Wingert, and Arnold Vosloo,

You have all created an incredible show for everyone in the fandom to enjoy. We really appreciate it, and even through all the fandom discourse- you still manage to provide us incredible Voltron content.

You continue to give us updates on the characters, and even though we may not voice it very often, we do acknowledge and value your sacrifices.

Thank you to all of the voice actors who perform incredibly, and continue to interact with the fandom, even though we do not always give you the best reactions. Most of us do recognize your sacrifices, and we thank you immensely for everything you do for the show and for its viewers.

Thank you, animators, for animating all of our favorite characters in an outstanding fashion- the colors, the fight scenes, even the emotional scenes- You drew them all incredibly. I know as well as the next person that some of you may have ended up losing your jobs over the recent leaks, but do not forget that your efforts to the show are not unnoticed. We appreciate every last one of you.

To the writers- you have written some of the most wholesome scenes and episodes I have ever received the pleasure of witnessing. As a writer, your content hits very deep, and I can not voice my appreciation loudly enough.

I thank you, on the fandom’s behalf.

My All-Time Top Ten Favourite Fanfics

I’ve thought about doing this list for quite a while now. Let me tell you why.

Being part of a fandom is, for the most part, quite awesome. However, being a fanfic writer can be quite daunting and discouraging, especially if you don’t get the feedback you’re looking for. As a writer myself, I just want to spread the love and point people towards some amazing, amazing works I’ve loved and have been inspired by since I was a mere thirteen year-old discovering ff.net for the first time. I really, really hope you guys check these stories out. In my humble opinion, they are even better than some original novels that have been published over the years. (*cough* Twilight *cough*)

At the end of the post, I’ve tagged TEN people here on Tumblr. I hope these people who are tagged will share ten of their all-time favourite fics and tag ten more people, and hopefully, we can keep this whole ‘support for fanfic authors’ thing going for a while yet. Fingers crossed! :)

1. The Life and Times (Harry Potter) by Jewels5 ( @itreallyatemyhand ) - The story of James and Lily’s sixth and seventh year at Hogwarts, and how they fall in love. This fic remains THE fic for me; it is practically canon in my mind.  If you’re a long-time Harry Potter fanfic reader, you’d probably have heard of TLAT. This fic has its own fandom, for God’s sake. (It’s even been mentioned in a Buzzfeed article? Whattt?) But if you haven’t heard of it, START READING IT NOW. I can’t gush enough about how well-plotted and well written this story is. It has inspired my own writing throughout the years and I’ve reread it more than five times. It physically pains me that it might never be finished, but don’t let this stop you from enjoying these 36 chapters. They will make you laugh, they will make you cry, they will make you fall in love, and trust me when I say - you won’t ever be disappointed. I still come back to this story every now and then, and every time, I fall in love with it a little bit more. - Multi-chapter on ff.net

2. The Queen Susan in Tashbaan, Part 2 of the Stone Gryphon (Narnia) by @rthstewart - The Pevensies aiding the British war effort in WWII. If you’re a history lover and a Narnia fan, you MUST read this story. The amount of history woven into this series is simply awe-inspiring. The plot still floors me, even after all these years. And the characters - both the canon ones and the original ones - are written and expanded so beautifully. Not only that, there is a lot of heart to this story and a very real, very palpable sense of bittersweetness to everything. - Multi-chapter on AO3

3. A Sea of Golden Sand (Narnia) by Andi Horton - The events of “The Horse and His Boy” through the perspectives of the Pevensies. This is everything - I repeat - EVERYTHING you’d want from a Golden-Age Narnia fic. This story chronicles the events leading up to the final battle at Anvard, from Rabadash’s visit to Narnia to Aravis and Shasta coming to Archenland. It is incredibly, incredibly well-written, filled with humour, heart, and amazing characters. And although it was published in 2007, most stories in the Narnia fandom don’t even come close to this level of badassery! Edmund, one of my favourite characters ever, is pretty much swoon-worthy in this. I’m legitimately in love with this version of Edmund. - Multi-chapter on ff.net

4. Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops (Narnia) by Francienyc - The Pevensies navigating life in England after they’re not allowed to go back to Narnia. Lots of sibling bonding in this one, but by God, the simplicity and the subtleness of their pain! It has been years, but I still think of this fic every once in a while, and it still chokes me up a little. - One-shot on ff.net

5. Hung Out to Dry (Narnia) by @rthstewart - Jill/Eustace but with an angsty, heartbreaking twist. Despite how short it is, it is still one of my favourite things I’ve ever read. The aesthetics, the silences, the unrequited love - this story has it all. Every time I read it, I find myself still getting emotional by the simplest of sentences. In short, just exquisite. - One-shot on AO3

6. Fools (Harry Potter) by lyin’ ( @thegirlwholied ) - The First Order of the Phoenix, with the Marauders, the Prewett twins, and Marlene Mckinnon. I remember crying my eyes out the first time I read this story, years and years ago. Yes, there are a ton of First Order fics out there. But please trust me when I say - none of them is quite like this one. This story will undoubtedly shatter you, but in the best of ways. - Multi-chapter on AO3

7. In Their Autumn Beauty (Harry Potter) by lyin’ ( @thegirlwholied ) - The teenagers of the First Order of the Phoenix as seen through the eyes of the much older, much more jaded Dorcas Meadowes. This story is only 2,000 words long, but it has stayed with me for years and years. It is so, so beautiful. Please. Just read it. I beg you. It’ll take you only ten minutes, maybe. You won’t regret it. - One-shot on ff.net

8. Joy in the Mourning (Narnia) by Andi Horton - The Pevensies during the Blitz in London, after they’re not allowed to go back to Narnia. I also remember crying when I first read this. (Yes, there really is a pattern here; I do cry a lot.) This story really captures what the Narnia books are about: finding joy and hope amidst despair. - One-shot on ff.net

9. The Death of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire) by La Reine Noire  ( @poorshadowspaintedqueens ) - The events leading up to and of Robert’s Rebellion through the perspectives of the Dead Ladies Club, primarily Lyanna Stark, Ashara Dayne, and Elia Martell. Usually, I’m not a fan of fics about Robert’s Rebellion; I find most authors’ take of the events hard to believe and the characters not well fleshed out. This story, however, is EPIC and SO well-written, you’d think it was canon while you’re reading it! I cried buckets at the end, of course. If you’re a fan of the ASOIAF books, definitely give this one a try. - Multi-chapter on AO3

10. Corellian Gin (Rogue One) by guineapiggie ( @ruby-red-inky-blue ) - Jyn/Cassian surviving Scariff, with bits told through the eyes of Bodhi. Of course, I had to squeeze in a Rogue One fic somehow, but I really had a hard time choosing ONE story from my old writing partner, guineapiggie. I nearly chose “The World Through A Scope”“Beinahe”, or something from the series that we wrote together (”Happy Endings”/ “Where’s My Love?”), but I settled on this one instead because it is one of the first Rogue One fics I read that made me tear up. I LOVE a bit of well-written romantic angst, and this story has it in spades. - One-shot on AO3

.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS (because I can’t quite help myself):

Harry Potter - Anything by lyin’ ( @thegirlwholied ), especially Brackets (Sirius/Marlene), Stray Thought (Sirius/Marlene), and the No, Nay, Never series (the First Order of the Phoenix).

Narnia - Firstly, anything by Andi Horton, especially King’s Champion (Edmund-centric) and The Better Part (Pevensies bonding). Secondly, The Delight of My Eyes (Aravis/Shasta) by Francienyc. And lastly, Rat and Sword Go To War (Pevensies in WWII) by @rthstewart , as well as the rest of her The Stone Gryphon series.

Rogue One - Resistance is Built On Hope (WWII AU) by ChronicOlicity, Floating, Sinking (fix-it fic) by @shu-of-the-wind, the violet hour (Jyn/Cassian modern au) by caramelle or @mellamymake, the road that sets into the sun (a beautiful Jyn/Cassian in the SW Legends-verse) by lyin’ ( @thegirlwholied ), and all the angsty Jyn/Cassian stories by guineapiggie ( @ruby-red-inky-blue ).

ao3 klance fic recs

Cheeky by rideahorse / a short and sweet oneshot that involves both kissing and incessant bickering, and honestly with this pair, what more could you ask for. rated T.

official summary: Keith pinches his eyes shut, slamming the book down again and swiveling to face Lance. “Oh my god,” he groans, standing up and crossing the two feet between them before Lance can get out a word. He grabs Lance’s face between his hands (perhaps a bit rougher than needed, but hey, he’s always wanted to slap Lance’s stupid face) and the last thing he sees is an expression of pure surprise before he leans down and presses his lips against Lance’s.It’s a peck, and it lasts a second, and then it’s over. Keith leans back, releasing Lance’s face, and hisses, “There.”

official summary: “You give off the obnoxious popular vibe. The mullet, and the rap sheet, and—the fingerless gloves,” Lance replies, and barrels on before Keith can take it the wrong way. “I’m so handsome, my name’s Keith and I’m a pilot.”“That sounds more like a compliment than an insult,” Keith says slowly, a disdainful quirk to his eyebrows that only spurs Lance on. He tilts his head a bit, his bangs shadowing his face, like he’s assessing a particularly impossible physics problem. “And I don’t like that voice you’re using.”

To my Darling Pretties,

First of all I would like to start by congratulating Adam, Eddie, Lana, Bobby and Colin on the pick up of Once Upon A Time! I am truly happy for you all and most importantly for the fans that will get to keep tuning in each week to see where they will take us.

A lot of you have been asking if I will be joining everyone in Season 7, so I wanted to let you know personally that unfortunately I am not. This wasn’t my choice but a creative decision of the shows that I totally respect and understand.

The most important thing is that you all know how much you mean to me. I am told frequently both online and in person that by being a part of such a special show I have in some way changed someone’s life. This is hugely meaningful to me. I am here to let you know that I am the one who has been changed. Not just by playing such a well written multi-dimensional character but by the fandom itself. I have heard your stories, your pain, your struggles, your achievements and I have truly felt you. I have learned. I have grown. I am a better person because of you, the fans and everyone that blessed me with this opportunity to play such an iconic role.
Congrats all and thank you! I look forward to the next. I invite you to come with me on this journey.

I am forever changed. And I’m wicked. And Wicked Always Wins.

Forever yours,

Bex 💚  [x]

if you haven’t already watched Netflix’s Castlevania, let me give you just a few reasons why you should drop everything and go hit ‘play’:

• first of all, you don’t need to be a fan of the videogames to understand/appreciate the series. I had no idea what it was about and loved it all the same. You won’t be catapulted in a story you know nothing about: all you need to know is already in the show. So yeah, Castlevania really *is* for everyone (except little kids – it gets violent)

• the animation is simply wonderful.
I’m no expert, but the colours and the actions and the characters and the settings MY GOD THEY ARE MAGNIFICENT, THAT’S ART™.
[“okay but hOW CAN SOMEONE BE THIS TALENTED”, me, two seconds in]

• THE DIALOGUES AND THE LINES AND BASICALLY EVERYTHING SAID IN THIS SHOW ??? B R I L L I A N T.
I MEAN, THE SCRIPT IS INSANELY FASCINATING AND CLEVER AND ?? RELEVANT?? ALSO FUNNY??? I LAUGHED SO HARD I know you won’t believe me but I’m telling The Truth and screaming

• as I said, it is a bit violent and gory, but I guess it’s bearable? even for the most squeamish ones? anyway, it’s just a few scenes, promise

• remember when I mentioned the characters…? well. to say I was awe-struck would be a euphemism. Not to be dramatic, but I love them and will protect them with my life [especially one particular whip-wielding vampire hunter] just hear me out THEY ARE PRECIOUS AND FUNNY AND WELL-WRITTEN AND SO ??? REALISTIC ??? I’M DEAD. HONESTLY. CHAPEAU.

• okay now read even more carefully because this is very important: THE CAST IS EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED OF BUT NEVER THOUGHT YOU DESERVED.
Graham McTavish as Dracula will strike you dead and yOU WILL FUCKING PITY HIM AND HOPE HE KILLS EVERYONE IN THAT STUPID, BIGOTED COUNTRY AND YOU WON’T EVEN REALISE IT but then you’ll be introduced to the love of my life, the drunken, sassy star of the show: the exiled prince and vampire hunter Trevor Belmont. I promise, you will be like “Dracula whO??” (or that was just me, idk), PLUS he’s voiced by Richard Armitage and I SWEAR TO GOD he’s a jewel, he’s so good at modulating his voice it hurts I should probably mention he’s also a fucking baritone and if *this* won’t make you scream “I NEED TO SEE THIS THINGY” with pure joy, I pity you.
You are missing out.
You are a bad person
I hope Trevor finds you and kicks your ass with his whip.

• seriously, all this show needs is a chance. ONE (1) CHANCE. That’s all. Just give it 25 minutes and it will blow your mind and you will end up like the rest of us, wondering how you even got into this mess and please, don’t look at me

• oh, Netflix confirmed season 2 on the day season 1 premiered and it received HUGE praises BOTH from the ignorant ones (hello, it’s me) who didn’t even know what they were doing AND from those who were already familiar or grew up with the original videogame (and cared about it) ((a lot)).

•…him.

I really wish Dragon Age fans would understand that “Moral Greyness” can be JUST as contrived and convoluted as regular “Black and White” and “Happy Ending.”

Just look at the Mage/Templar Conflict. The devs have tried their darnedest across three and a half games to present the conflict as 100% balanced with both sides equally sympathetic, and they’ve failed each time. The devs have said they felt they made the mages look “too sympathetic” in the first game. For the second game they realized too late that making the player character come from a family of apostates and have two mage companions but no Templars made Templars look bad; and they fully admitted that Leandra getting killed by a crazy blood mage serial killer was an attempt to vindicate a pro-Templar playthrough. DAI? Well, we all know about THAT… (Retconning the Dalish to have a “three mages max” rule just to make Circles look better by comparison?) All to make a flimsy, “See? Both sides are equally flawed” argument that’s as sturdy as cardboard; blow on it, and it falls over.

Just look at The Masked Empire verses Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. In the book, the human nobles are all completely despicable, racist, genocidal asses, while Briala (and Felassan to a lesser extent) is the most sympathetic and likable character. Briala is a straight-up hero who struggles to help her people despite knowing they won’t thank her for it, and being shit on by everyone she meets right and left.

In DAI, the devs flat-out hid the many crimes and character flaws of Celene and Gaspard, and hid many of the virtues and character strengths of Briala. Why? To create a flimsy and false “All three choices are equally morally gray!” so-called “choice.”

Just look at the Qunari. You can tell the devs have been trying their damnedest from game one to depict Qunari culture as rather alien and incomprehensible to outsiders and vice-versa, but still a good system with its balances of virtues and flaws like any other. And it never works.

And any time players complain about an aspect of their culture, they try to fix it next game. Sten said “women don’t fight”? In DA2 they’re like, “JK! Since the Priesthood allows both genders, we just made up this secret spy division of the Ben’Hassrath that allows female assassins. Please love our Qunari.“ When that didn’t work, in DAI they went overtime trying to make Iron Bull THE most likable character they could, then had him lend his charisma to explain away Qunari societal faults. Plus the whole “transgender acceptance” and “free love” and “Tamassran are still like family” thing, and the sudden, “Oh, the Qunari don’t REALLY keep women from fighting. If a woman is discovered to be good in combat, they just decide he’s a man who happens to look like a woman and let “him” fight. Please love our Qunari!”

And it’s NEVER WORKED. I mean, some small minority of weirdos like Qunari despite their flaws (myself included), but MOST players just find these flimsy attempts at “MORAL GREYNESS!!!” to be just that: flimsy.

So whenever I talk about a plot hole or character failing in the series, I’m so sick to death of seeing that go-to, knee-jerk, catch-all “moral grayness” excuse.

Yes. Sometimes, when written well, a morally grey conflict can be very engaging. But sometimes some characters or divisions naturally come across as more sympathetic than another. I’m not saying “one side is innocent and perfect and other other guilty and evil,” but sometimes one side comes across as a lighter shade of grey than another; it happens. If the devs would just embrace that and run with it and tell emotionally engaging stories, instead of spending so much time and energy trying to constantly backpedal or force a square peg in a round hole just for the sake of that original vision that just isn’t coming through.

- You can’t make a conflict where one heavily tyrannical and abusive faction holds complete power over another as a perfectly 50/50 “morally grey conflict” where “both sides are equally at fault.”

- You can’t take the freedom-fighting victim of horrific systematic abuse by two perpetrators of that horrific system and try to act like she’s “just as bad” or “on the same footing” as those abusers.

You can’t take a culture that thrives on robbing individuality, stripping free will, brainwashing resisters, and severely limiting the roles of its citizens based on their gender, magical ability, etc. and expect our modern freedom- and individuality-loving society to find them anything but restrictive and tyrannical.

“Moral Grey” can be just as CONTRIVED as any attempt at “black and white” or “happily-ever-after.” Because they’re still trying to force something that doesn’t fit.

There is some out-of-character behavior that happens this season, trying to figure out who Lotor is. There’s so many things we can’t–so, so many things I’d love to tell you, but we can’t.  But Lotor is probably, in my opinion, one of the most complex villains I’ve ever seen on tv… He is complicated. There are some crazy things, really well written. Really superbly, superbly performed by AJ [LoCascio]. And there’s a lot of deception–we’ll put it that way–that kind of permeates our team. And so people get– Yea, everybody gets thrown for a loop by Lotor.
Dear Dream Daddy Devs,

@dreamdaddygame

Hello, my name is James. You don’t know me, but hopefully this ‘letter’ reaches you and you get to know me. You recently held an interview admitting that Joseph was intentionally written to have no good ending, and that you were taken aback by the fact that so many people wanted him to have one.

While I understand that you wanted to put a fun twist on things and I respect you for it, making the twist be “well, you shouldn’t have dated him anyway” is probably the most offensive thing you could have possibly done. I’ll delve into why a bit more in a second, but first I want to point out that creating a dating sim where you can’t date one of the characters is basically akin to having the final boss in a FPS one you have to fight entirely through melee. While it sounds like an interesting idea, there’s a reason no FPS has done that before.

I was raised in the middle of Montgomery, Alabama. My father, the man that I am still afraid to come out to, took me to a southern Baptist church every Sunday. It was there that I learned that being gay was a sin, that I should repress any feelings I have and, if I didn’t, I was a disgusting sinner and I deserved to go to hell. I still to this day have trouble admitting that I am a Christian because I have so many terrible memories about that church.

So, you can only imagine how amazingly happy I was that you created a game that had so much diversity that it even included a gay Christian character. I was fucking ecstatic, even! I felt like someone was finally acknowledging me as a person who exists rather than a joke on TV. It was amazing! And then you had a trans dad! And a gay black man!! My God!! It had everything!! I had to buy this game when it came out because it not only spoke to me, but to other minorities that exist that I saw in some of my friends.

And then I finished Joseph’s route. I was shocked, at first, thinking maybe I did something wrong? I mean, my character prompted me to try again, after all. So I played it again. And again, and again. Still, no better ending than him staying with his wife and you either being dumped or a ‘side piece’. Researching the game only made it worse, because now not only was I upset that I couldn’t get a good ending with a character that resonates with me, but so much of the fandom had started spreading posts about Joseph being a terrible man for cheating on his wife.

Let’s actually talk about Mary real fast; you say she was your favorite character and that you wrote her to be misunderstood in the end, and I get that. She’s a really good person, but surely you realize you wrote her as an alcoholic, neglectful wife that actively cheats on her husband? Like, on Robert’s third date, she walks away with a man hand in hand. If that wasn’t you trying to imply that she was going home with him, then maybe you should consider re-writing that entire interaction. You wrote Joseph and Mary into a knowingly toxic marriage, but decided that, in the end, you weren’t going to give either of them a good ending. By not letting Joseph have a good ending, you’ve trapped Mary into a marriage that she in not happy in. You did both say she was your favorite character, yes? Give her a happy ending, then.

Oh, and also while we’re on the morally grey characters, uh, you gave Robert a good ending while one of his routes is basically him sexually manipulating you? You gave him a good ending. Why can’t Joseph get one where he divorces Mary, says that he may need a break, but he still wants to be with you? Like, how is that any different than Robert’s “okay I need a break but I still want to be with you”? But, I digress.

My name is James. I am a gay, Christian man that was raised to believe that there was something wrong with him. I am a man who was absofuckinglutely ecstatic that there was a gay dating sim that featured a gay Christian character in it. A gay Christian character in a failing marriage that reads, at least at first, like so many of the stories you hear from the south where gay men are forced into straight relationships because otherwise they might get fucking attacked in the street for daring to be queer. I’m serious, I remember my mom telling me a story about how a gay club got attacked by someone when I was six/seven years old. Christian gay men getting attacked by another Christian man who couldn’t stand the fact that they existed.

Joseph was my representation, and you wrote him to be a character that you intentionally could not date because you wanted to make a dating sim with an interesting plot twist for, I don’t know, social allegory or whatever.

Thank you for making a game with an amazing amount of diversity. I have so many trans friends that are beyond excited that there’s a mainstream game with a transgender character that you can actually date. I’ve seen black men online go crazy because they have representation in a video game.

But I am not going to thank you for Joseph Christiansen. I am not going to thank you for creating a character that I know resonated with so many other gay Christians out there that you admit was in there to basically just make the player feel bad.

I don’t want my money back because I still want to support you and I’m glad I did because you’ve done so much good with this game. You’ve given representation to people who normally don’t get any of it at all, and that’s amazing! All I want is for you to, please, at least read this and consider adding in a good ending for Joseph. Consider giving him an ending similar to Robert and having him admit that the marriage wasn’t good for him or Mary. Consider giving Mary and Joseph the good endings that they deserve.

Thank you very much for reading,

- James

One more thing about Thistleclaw. The Erins failed to paint him as a villain in Bluestar’s Prophecy by simply making him ambitious and battle hungry. They so clearly wanted him to be the reason Tigerclaw ended up as such a bloodthirsty villain, but the writing and character development fell flat and they made Thistleclaw more innocent as a character than Tigerclaw. YEARS later, Vicky wrote Spottedleaf’s heart as a pathetic after thought to Bluestar’s Prophecy.

What really bothers me is the horrific character development. They wanted Thistleclaw’s flaw to be his ambition, but they failed at writing that so Vicky wrote up a new flaw for him all together. In Bluestar’s Prophecy, we’re led to believe he is overly ambitious, not a pedophile. That’s a completely new trait of his that Vicky just MADE UP last minute to provide a fitting explanation for why he was sent to the dark forest, but it’s obviously not what they originally intended for him as a character.

Now they’ve essentially made TWO Thistleclaws, since he might as well be another character altogether. The one from Bluestar’s Prophecy is loyal, ambitious, brave, sharp tongued, grumpy, and he loves his family more than anything. The Thistleclaw from Spottedleaf’s Heart is a creepy, sly pedophile who grooms Spottedpaw from when she was a kit. He’s malicious, envious, and manipulative; he has an explosive temper that leaves Spottedpaw tiptoeing around topics so he doesn’t blow up at her. The former and the latter are simply not the same character. It’s incoherent and poorly thought out, and overall the most disgusting afterthought and excuse they could have possibly written for Thistleclaw being in the Dark Forest. They could have had him force Spottedleaf to fake omens or something??? That would have been evil, like Hawkfrost. Blackmail, murder, deception, anything other than pedophilia. That is just unacceptable for a primarily child based audience.

House Rules

So for those of you that are spirit keepers/companions, or are spirit workers of any frequency, you may know a bit about house rules. Now keep in mind, you don’t need to have house rules. Some don’t find that they need them, some prefer not to have them. I choose to have a set of house rules because I find that for me, it helps bring a little peace and harmony to my house, and that if anything did go wrong, I have something to refer to. Anyone in my house, be it astral being, spirit or entity, from white arts to dark arts to black arts, is expected to follow these rules while they are part of my household/in my house.

These are my house rules. Feel free to use them if you like, modify them, add/subtract as you see fit. I have had a lot of success with these so far, and no incidents. Depending on who is in your family/keep/court, you may need to add rules, or subtract them. But these are what work for me & my family. What is in bold is my actual rule, and then I will expand upon the rule if I see fit.

1. Never harm or show disrespect to myself, my significant other, any other member of my family, friends or welcome household guests. This is obvious… I don’t want any of my spirit family hurting each other, nor do I want them hurting any human or animal that is welcome in my house.

2. Never harm any children or pets.

3. Never show yourself to anyone besides myself in your true form, unless your true form is something that would not scare them. (Example: If it is a child, appear as something child friendly.) I have a few not so pleasant looking family members, or some beings that in their true form are pretty terrifying. I wouldn’t want them showing themselves to a child or an adult.

4. Sexual contact is only welcome with me and will not be permitted with anyone else. Basically just don’t go touching my boyfriend or anyone else, they don’t appreciate it.

5. No physical manifestations at work in front of anyone but myself. Patients and coworkers are not to know about you. Some of you may not need this, but I work with the public and don’t need a spirit manifestation scaring patients away.

6. Protect yourself at all times. If something comes up and I can do something about it, I will help.

7. Do not hamper with communication. This covers and includes communication between yourselves, or with me. If I am working specifically with one or with one group, I don’t need anyone else butting in and hampering that communication. Wait until I am done.

8. Do your part for the highest good of the household, including all spirits, entities, astral beings & other. All living people, spirits, entities, astral beings & other shall work at living together peacefully. Bullying wont be tolerated, if you have an issue, contact me.

9. We work as a team, with me being the team leader. If you have suggestions, tell me. If you are unsure to my wishes, ask me or look within. If they have doubts about something, my family is always welcome to “look within” for my wishes, if I am for some reason unavailable to ask.

10. No twisting my words.

11. No lying. Do not pretend to be something/someone you are not. Do not make anything up to make someone else look bad.

12. Disarm malicious magic that is sent my way by someone else or that is around by circumstance.

13. Keep watch over property & always be ready to act against any pending issue.

14. Help identify any possible conflicts. Help judge the character of people, spirits, entities, astral beings & other around us. This has actually been a useful rule in several situations. Its really two rules condensed into one, as well, but its how I have it written in my notebook.

Thats it! They are fairly long, but also fairly basic, and cover the essentials. Most rules are pretty obvious, but I would rather state the obvious then regret not stating the obvious later on. Again, this is just what I use for my house rules (its nice to have a digital copy on here as well) - you can use them if you like, add/remove rules as needed. & if you don’t do spirit work, or have spirits in your regular household, you don’t even need to have this.

Enjoy!

I’m kind of making some stuff up to fit what I want to do with this prompt

You left the Salvatore house, sure that no one noticed at all. They were to preoccupied to notice you anyway. They cared for a while, when you and Caroline were turned, well, Stefan did. But more and more happened, and it was like you faded away. You had more control over your Vampirism than Caroline, but she was stronger so she was included more in the problems you were all facing, everyone tried to push you out, thinking you couldn’t handle it, so they left you alone.

You tried to explain to them you could help, Matt could why couldn’t you? You figured it was because no one understood you. You had trouble being clear with your thoughts, no one could keep up with them. Hell, you barely could sometimes.

You and Carolines relationship was strained these days. You two use to be so close, you were twins after all. Though, not identical. You wish you were sometimes, Caroline was so beautiful, you figured that was why Klaus was interested in her. Why did you care anyway? Klaus was the bad guy wasn’t he? Caroline couldn’t care about him any less. Why didn’t he like you? Why didn’t anyone like you? You use to cry over this all the time, but now, you were so use to it, you no longer wasted your tears on those who didn’t care about you.

Before you knew it, you had walked all the way home. Walking in you call out “I’m home mom!” hearing no response you figured she was at work. You walked up the stairs and went into your room. Your eyes immediately going to the box on your bed. Walking over you saw an invitation to the Mikaelsons ball, you picked it up ready to take it to Carolines room, Klaus must have gotten her a gift or something, and thought this was her room.

Stopping before you left your room, you looked back down at the box, you wanted to know what was in it. “It was on my bed. If she gets mad at me for opening it, it’s not my fault.” you said out loud to yourself.

Turning around you put the box back on your bed. You took the envelope, opening it looking at the invitation you turn it over. You couldn’t believe what was on the back. “Save me a dance y/n. Fondly, Klaus” he wasn’t serious was he? He invited you and not Caroline? He must be up to something. Glancing at the box you slowly took the lid off gasping at what was in the box. A beautiful red sparkling gown. You touched it gently feeling the fabric.
