Ten things I learned about writing from Stephen King
The novelist James Smythe, who has been analysing the work of Stephen King for the Guardian since 2012, on the lessons he has drawn from the master of horror fiction
By James Smythe

Stephen King is an All-Time Great, arguably one of the most popular novelists the world has ever seen. And there’s a good chance that he’s inspired more people to start writing than any other living writer. So, as the Guardian and King’s UK publisher Hodder launch a short story competition – to be judged by the master himself – here are the ten most important lessons to learn from his work.

1. Write whatever the hell you like

King might be best known – or, rather, best regarded – as a writer of horror novels, but really, his back catalogue is crammed with every genre you can think of. There are thrillers (Misery, Gerald’s Game), literary novels (Bag Of Bones, Different Seasons), crime procedurals (Mr Mercedes), apocalypse narratives (The Stand), fantasy (Eyes Of The Dragon, The Dark Tower series) … He’s even written what I think of as being one of the greatest Young Adult novels of all time: The Long Walk. Perhaps the only genre or audience he hasn’t really touched so far is comedy, but most of his work features moments that show his deft touch with humour. It’s clear that King does what he wants, when he wants, and his constant readers – the term he calls his, well, constant readers – will follow him wherever he goes.

2. The scariest thing isn’t necessarily what’s underneath the bed

Horror is a curious thing. What scares one person won’t necessarily scare another. And while there might be moments in his horror novels that tread towards the more conventional ideas of what some find terrifying, for the most part, the truly scary aspects are those that deal with humanity itself. Ghosts drive people to madness, telekinetic girls destroy whole towns with their powers, clowns … well, clowns are just bloody terrifying full stop. But the true crux of King’s ability to scare is finding the thing that his readers are actually worried about, and bringing that to the fore. If you’re writing horror, don’t just think about what goes bump in the night; think about what that bump might drive people to do afterwards.

3. Don’t be scared of transparency

One of my favourite things about King’s short story collections are the little notes about each tale that he puts into the text. The history of them, the context for the idea, how the writing process actually worked. They’re not only invaluable material for aspiring writers – because exactly how many drafts does it take to reach a decent story? King knows! – but they’re also brilliant nuggets of insight into King himself. Some people might think that it’s better off knowing nothing about authors when they read their work, but for King, his heart is on his sleeve. In his latest collection, The Bazaar of Broken Dreams, King gets more in-depth than ever, talking about what inspired the stories in such an honest way that it couldn’t have come from another writer’s pen. Which brings us to …

4. Write what you know. Sort of. Sometimes

Write what you know is the most common writing tip you’ll find anywhere. It’s nonsense, really, because if we all did that we’d end up with terribly boring novels about writers staring out of windows waiting for inspiration to hit. (If you like those, incidentally, head straight for the literary fiction section of your nearest bookshop.) But King understands that experience is something which can be channelled into your work, and should be at every opportunity. Aspects of his life – addiction, teaching, his near-fatal car accident, rock and roll, ageing – have cropped up in his work over and over, in ways that aren’t always obvious, but often help to drive the story. That’s something every writer can use, because it’s through these truths that real emotions can be writ large on the page.

5. Aim big. Or small

King’s written some mammoth books, and they’re often about mammoth things. The Stand takes readers into an apocalypse, with every stage of it laid out on the page until the final fantastical showdown. It deals with a horror that hits a group of characters twice in their lives, showing us how years and years of experience can change people. And The Dark Tower is a seven (or eight, or more, if you count the short stories set in its world) part series that takes in so many different genres of writing it’s dizzying. When he needs to, King aims really big, and sometimes that’s what you have to do to tell a story. At the other end of the spectrum, some of King’s most enduring stories – Rita Hayworth & Shawshank Redemption, The Mist – have come from his shorter works. He traps small groups of characters in single locations and lets the story play out how it will. The length of the story you’re telling should dictate the size of the book. Doesn’t matter if it’s forty thousand words or two hundred, King doesn’t waste a word.

6. Write all the time. And write a lot

King’s published – wait for it – 55 novels, 11 collections of stories, 5 non-fiction works, 7 novellas and 9 assorted other pieces (including illustrated works and comic books). That’s over a period of 41 years. That’s an average of two books a year. Which is, I must admit, a pretty giddying amount. That’s years of reading (or rereading, if you’re as foolishly in awe of him as I am). But he’s barely stopped for breath. This year has seen three books published by him, which makes me feel a little ashamed. Still, at my current rate of writing, I might catch up with him sometime next century. And while not every book has found the same critical and commercial success, they’ve all got their fans.

7. Voice is just as important as content

King’s a writer who understands that a story needs to begin before it’s actually told. It begins in the voice of the novel: is it first person, or third? Is it past or present tense? Is it told through multiple narrators, or just the one? He’s a master at understanding exactly why each story is told the way it’s told. Sure, he might dress it up as something simple – the story finding the voice it needs, or vice versa – but through his books you can see that he’s tried pretty much everything, and can see why each voice worked with the story he was telling.

8. And Form is just as important as voice

King isn’t really thought of as an experimental novelist, which is grossly unfair. Some of King’s more daring novels have taken on really interesting forms. Be it The Green Mile’s fragmented, serialised narrative; or the dual publication of The Regulators and Desperation – novels which featured the same characters in very different situations, with unsettling parallels between the stories that unfolded for them; or even Carrie’s mixed-media narrative, with sections of the story told as interview or newspaper extract. All of these novels have played with the way they’re presented on the page to find the perfect medium for telling those stories. Really, the lesson here from King is to not be afraid to play.

9. You don’t have to be yourself

Some of King’s greatest works in the early years of his career weren’t published by King himself. They were in the name of Richard Bachman, his slightly grislier pseudonym. The Long Walk, Thinner, The Running Man – these are books that dealt with a nastier side of things than King did in his properly attributed work. Because, maybe it’s good to have a voice that allows us to let the real darkness out, with no judgments. (And then maybe, as King eventually did in The Dark Half, it’s good to kill that voice on the page … )

10. Read On Writing. Now

This is the most important tip in the list. In 2000, King published On Writing, a book that sits in the halfway space between autobiography and writing manual. It’s full of details about his process, about how he wrote his books, channelled his demons and overcame his challenges. It’s one of the few books about writing that are actually worth their salt, mainly because it understands that it’s about a personal experience, and readers might find that useful. There’s no universal truths when it comes to writing. One person’s process would be a nightmare for somebody else. Some people spend years labouring on nearly perfect first drafts; some people get a first draft written in six weeks, and then spend the next year destroying it and rebuilding it. On Writing tells you how King does it, to help you to find your own. Even if you’re not a fan of his books, it’s invaluable to the in-development writer. Heck, it’s invaluable to all writers.

Voltron fic recs, the fourth wall

PART ONE - PART TWO - PART THREE

So it’s been about six months since I’ve done a fic rec list. I’ve been asked a number of times to do this and I’ve read a lot of fic in that time so uh, I guess some of these are like my greatest hits of the last half year?

Some are very popular and some are less well-known but no less deserving of praise, so go give them all some love!

As with any rec list, please pay attention to the tags and warnings

Trouble’s Making Everything Alright - 78k (WIP); klance; Keith and Lance crash-land on a lawless, low-tech planet and become rough and tumble mercenaries, donning leather coats and gun holsters, righting wrongs (while committing a few heists of their own) and fighting to get back to their team.

you never stood a chance - 12k; klance; Lance accidentally sends Keith a gym selfie snapchat with the caption “BET YOU WANNA LICK THESE NIPS” and promptly freaks out. Turns out to be one of the best mistakes he’s ever made.

King and Reaper - 35k; klance; The story of the destruction of Earth and its aftermath, feat. questionable science in regards to weapons of mass destruction, gratuitous Star Wars references, theoretical chess games with the emperor of most of the known universe, explosions, the greatest bromance of all time, the worst romance of all time and many more things besides.

nothing’s quite as sweet - 50k; klance; Keith is a barista who hates his job. Lance works at the cat shelter across the street. When Keith finds abandoned kittens behind the store and in a panic goes to Lance for help, he kicks off a chain of events that includes kitten cuddles, coffee experimentation and a whole heap of fluff.

Foreign Scenes - 110k; klance; Lance is travelling across Europe and keeps bumping into Keith sneaking past “no trespassing” signs in an attempt to get better photograps. Basically an AU in which Lance and Keith become impromptu travel buddies and get into trouble.

You and I Collide - 55k (WIP); klance; Lance likes to sing in the shower. Keith lives in the apartment next door and the walls are not very thick. And you can bet when Lance wakes him up at 7:30 in the morning, Keith has something to say about it.

Pulsar - 31k (WIP); klance; A story about college, coming to terms with your past, being scared of your future, and running into crazy things like love somewhere in-between.

Ignorance is Bliss - 161k (WIP but almost done); klance; As it turns out, learning that your house is haunted makes the ghosts a lot more aggressive. Who knew? Ah, well. At least one of them is hot. And he’s the less-evil one, too, so that’s always a plus.

the potential of you and me - 15k; klance; The summer after freshman year of college, Lance drags Keith back to their hometown to hang out. But the two of them rarely spend time together without Hunk and Pidge around, because things had a way of getting out of hand real quick. This summer is… no different.

Deepest Shade - 40k (WIP); klance; Lance, idle middle son of the Álvarez family – shippers and traders, backbone of the galaxy, the epitome of self-made wealth – is drifting. Keith Kogane has been a thorn in Lance’s side since the day he was adopted by the powerful rival clan, but he can’t deny that Keith is incredibly attractive. A chance encounter at an Altean dinner party makes him realize the attraction might be mutual.

Trying to be scientifically accurate in sci-fi is a sucker's game. Just like how you had authors making the piltdown man plot critical, there's stuff now I'm sure will have been found to be based on discredited theories in the future, cuz science is always moving. Space-fantasy like Star Wars will always be timeless because of how generic all the "science" is. Well, for the original trilogy anyway. Don't get me started on the legion of tech manuals and expanded universe stuff...

Using the term “hard scifi” to talk about scifi that emphasizes plausibility and extrapolation is maybe one of the greatest public relations and publicity failures of all time. The name implies a lot of things, all of which are bad, and very few of which are actually true.

Sure, there are bad examples of hard scifi – there are lots of unreadable scifi stories about “two engineers discussing relativity as they get sucked down a black hole,” as Cory Doctorow put it. Then again, there are lots of bad examples of steampunk stories, romance stories, any kind of story you can name.

It can, though, be done well…and some writers do very interesting things with it. These kinds of stories don’t have to be intimidating…the whole point of a story is that you learn as you go. If a science writer wanted to be intimidating, they would be doing something other than writing a novel.

The appeal of scifi that has an element of plausibility is that it activates the same part of your brain that lights up when you enjoy detective novels, the logical reasoning portion Forrest Ackerman, one of the founders of modern fandom in the 1930s, once said that if science fiction never existed, he would be a fan of detective novels, because the same processes are at work in both.

Here’s a few recommendations if “talky, techy” scifi that could really happen is more your bag, and might even change your mind about that entire field if you give them a chance:

Dragon’s Egg by Robert L. Forward. This story is about human explorers who find a planet orbiting a neutron star, which has a gravity 67 billion times that of earth, and the sesame seed sized inhabitants bound by the strong-force rather than the weak force, who see only in ultraviolet and x-ray light, and who’s lives are incredibly sped up by time dialation…their entire civilization, from a human point of view, lasts an entire month, and they worship our spacecraft as a divine artifact. By the start of the month, they are stone age, by the end, they have technology far in advance of earth and try to communicate with us slow-lived beings.

Einstein’s Bridge by John G. Cramer. Imagine if this happened: a supercollider turns on, and the radioactive particles start blasting out prime numbers. It’s being used by an intelligent species to communicate with us…and it turns out more than one alien race are trying to do that, including one that happens to be evil.

Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars books. This series is the antidote to the idea that hard scifi is by definition, not character driven. It reminds me of nothing so much as Game of Thrones: it’s a political thriller that alternates between the point of view of multiple characters, set around the colonization and independence of Mars, trying to free itself from the yoke of an oppressive corporate ruled earth. It makes you want to try kava (the drink of choice on Mars), kind of like how Narnia makes you want to try turkish delight.

Writing a three dimensional villain with personal goals, growth and a intriguing story arc is very important to the success of a story. Would Star Wars be so legendary without Darth Vader? How about Batman, without The Joker? These amazing stories all have incredible antagonists.

The new Netflix Original Castlevania is no different. Before meeting the hero, the first episode is spent introducing the villain of the series. Vlad Dracula. A vulnerable and tragic figure with a heartbreaking backstory that gives his actions meaning. He causes a lot of pain but at the same time you wonder if he is justified in what he’s doing.

The protagonist is a former demon hunter, now drunken drifter named Trevor Belmont. A interesting personality in that he isn’t your typical hero that just wants to do the right thing. In fact, he doesn’t want to help. He doesn’t care. But must act when he finds himself in the middle of the situation.

Heroes are at there best when they have personal demons they must conquer. Nobody wants to watch a perfect goodie two shoes save the world because real life isn’t like that. Real life isn’t black and white. People have problems. The best heroes, like Belmont, are the ones with issues that real people can relate too.

The animation is excellent and the art looks professional. This isn’t a cheap Saturday morning cartoon. It looks beautiful. But the care to the story and characters stand out the most. Castlevania is based on an old Komani video game from the 80s. Video game movies and television series like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider and Super Mario don’t have a great track record. But Castlevania could quite possibly be the greatest video game apdatation of all time.

A twisted and dark fantasy adventure with hints of black comedy from the mind of Warren Ellis, the creator of Red, Transmetropolitan and Iron Man: Extremis.

Thierry Henry, Forward, Henry has received many plaudits and awards in his football career. He was runner-up for the 2003 and 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year awards; in those two seasons, he also won back-to-back PFA Players’ Player of the Year titles. Henry is the only player ever to have won the FWA Footballer of the Year three times (2003, 2004, 2006), and the French Player of the Year on a record four occasions. Henry was voted into the Premier League Overseas Team of the Decade in the 10 Seasons Awards poll in 2003, and in 2004 he was named by football legend Pelé on the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players.

In terms of goal-scoring awards, Henry was the European Golden Boot winner in 2004 and 2005 (sharing it with Villarreal’s Diego Forlán in 2005). Henry was also the top goalscorer in the Premier League for a record four seasons (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006). In 2006, he became the first player to score more than 20 goals in the league for five consecutive seasons (2002 to 2006). With 175, Henry is currently fifth in the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers, behind Alan Shearer, Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard. All of his Premier League goals were for Arsenal, giving him the record for most goals in the competition for one club, until it was broken by Rooney in 2016. France’s all-time record goalscorer was, in his prime in the mid 2000s, regarded by many coaches, footballers and journalists as one of the best players in the world. In November 2007, he was ranked 33rd on the Association of Football Statisticians’ compendium for “Greatest Ever Footballers."

Arsenal fans honoured their former player in 2008, declaring Henry the greatest Arsenal player. In two other 2008 surveys, Henry emerged as the favourite Premier League player of all time among 32,000 people surveyed in the Barclays 2008 Global Fan Report. In 2009, Henry was voted the best Premier League player of the 2000s. Arsenal fan and The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey mentions Henry in the tribute song "Highbury Highs”, which he performed at Arsenal’s last ever game at Highbury on 7 May 2006. On 10 December 2011, Arsenal unveiled a bronze statue of Henry at the Emirates Stadium as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

(A/n): Honest to god, this came to me at about 1:00am this morning and thought maybe I’d use it as a 100+ FOLLOWER CELEBRATION OML

Summary: The four of you were in a park for another one of Mark’s fan get togethers. While playing a game with the audience, an asshat walks past and says something rude. In retaliation, (Y/n) says some colourful words of her own; standing up for her greatest friends.

Warnings: LANGUAGE. USE OF THE WORD ‘FAG’

_____

Honestly, in some way or another, L.A was bound to be hot. Standing out in an open park didn’t do much for that. Neither did (Y/n)’s shiny (f/c) top.

Though, it was closer to evening than the last time they all were out, making everything just a bit better. The sky was beautiful and just the right temperature that helped everyone relax.

“I don’t understand!” Ethan cried “What is this?!”

“It’s your demise!” (Y/n) called back cockily, jumping around on the grass.

It made the crowd giggle; bringing a chain reaction of (Y/n) smiling back at them.

“What!!?” The blue haired boy spun around and pointed at the people whom were watching you four participate in all sorts of challenges “Don’t laugh! No!”

But they only laughed more, this time joined by (Y/n), Tyler and tied together with Mark’s own deep chuckle.

“Alright, It’s simple Ethan, gosh.” Mark confirmed and took in a large breath “You fucking climb up Tyler and sit on his shoulders and (Y/n) will be on mine and you two will FIGHT to the death! Whomever gets pushed from the others shoulders first, loses!” he finished, sputtering out his breath.

“I feel cheated, because Mark might kick me.” Tyler whined.

(Y/n) laughed with the crowd “Well, I feel cheated because Mark is short.” they said.

“Okay, whatever.” the brunette called “Just get on my shoulders, dick sucker.”

So enough, both Ethan and (Y/n) got into position and the audience began to count down.

“3…”

“I don’t feel safe.” (Y/n) commented as Mark wobbled slightly.

“2..”

“I feel I need an adult…” Ethan demanded. His hands were in a death grip on Tyler’s shoulders.

“1.”

“Wait, where will we lan–!” (Y/n) began to ask, only shortly cut off by not the crowd, but instead by a lone voice.

“This looks like a waste of daylight, how fucking gay.” they snickered “Fags.”

Everyone dropped to a deathly silence.

The crowd started to ‘boo’ quietly and mumble among themselves. (Y/n) was the first to actually break the quiet air.

“Who the hell was that?” (Y/n) snapped, twisting a bit to jump down from Mark’s shoulders. He was careful to let them down lightly.

“The pack whore defends them. That’s rich.”

They were able to single out a man behind of the grouped fans. He was actually across the road.

“HEY! FUCK YOU!” (Y/n) started.

Tyler’s face instantly looked concerned as he looked to Mark. Though, Ethan was never present for any of the youtuber’s angry outbursts before; he was already taken aback.

“AT LEAST THEY’RE DOING SOME FUCKING GOOD.” They continued. (Y/n)’s voice seemed to shake with resentment, gaining in volume by the second “THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO SHOW FOR IS HOW NOT-VALUABLE YOU ARE TO SOCIETY.

The people cheered for (Y/n).

Everyone present was either looking at the delivery of (Y/n)’s speech or the man across the street looking scattered.

“NOt only tHAT,” their voice broke “BUT THE ONLY THING THAT IMPRESSES PEOPLE ABOUT YOU AT THIS POINT IS JUST HOW MUCH OF YOUR DICK YOU WERE ABLE TO SEEMINGLY SHOVE IN YOUR PERSONALITY. THESE FUCKERS HERE HAVE RAISED THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY, WHILE YOU WERE SAT AT HOME, GETTING YOU IQ SOMEHOW LOWER THAN YOUR MOM’S FUCKING STANDARDS.”

People who were passing by on their own business began to stare. Impressed, Mark still decided they’ve done enough.

(Y/n)’s posture showed their obvious readiness to fight. They began to get antsy and took a step forward.

From there Mark was quick to step up to them and lace their arms behind their back. Using one hand to hold them tight to (Y/n)’s back and the other to solidly cover their mouth.

(Y/n) jumped and twitched in his grip, yells now muffled into his hand.

Tyler put himself in front of the two, effectively blocking (Y/n)’s view. All the while, the crowd cheered brilliantly. Ethan encouraged them with screams of his own.

The unknown man now admittedly frightened, took this his chance to flee. The fans changing to ‘boo’ him off.

Slowly afterwards, (Y/n) calmed enough for Mark to uncover their mouth.

“Sorry…” they apologized simply.

Mark released their arms as well.

Ethan didn’t waste time taking a running start to hug them greatly.

“Thank you!” he laughed.

Once more, everyone collectively cheered. Everyone ran to hug (Y/n). Mark, Tyler, everyone.

They couldn’t help but let a hearty laugh slip their pale lips.

Once all of them parted again, (Y/n) was beaming brightly.

“Thank you,” Ethan repeated “You have fucking balls.” he laughed along with everyone else.

“Well sometimes I have to defend my people,” (Y/n) responded, a silly tone prominent behind her words “right!?”

The cheers were as loud as they could have ever been. No one would surely be forgetting this soon, it would be all over youtube in a matter of hours. But, all that mattered right now, was getting back to the challenge and having themselves a good time.

(A/n): SO I RECENTLY GOT TO 100+ FOLLOWERS ON THIS BLOG AND HOLY SHIT AM I PROUD. THANK YOU SO GODDAMN MUCH WTFF

But, in other words. This was a small something I put into place for this occasion and I love it. Also, as of now, I don’t have any requests; so don’t shy from sending one of your own.

What is Self-Care and Why is it Important?

Self-care is addressing the needs of your body, whether it be physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. Because we are all built differently, self-care isn’t going to look the same for all of us. For some, self-care is gathering the strength to get out of bed and take a shower while for others it’s finding 15 minutes in their busy day to sit alone outside. There is no RIGHT way to self-care only YOUR way. So it’s essential that you listen to your body and allow it to lead you towards what you need in order to care for yourself.

As stated above, there are 4 areas of yourself that require acts of self-care to stay in balance and working properly. Though they are separated, they are also very much connected. Ignoring one area has the potential to negatively affect the others so it’s important to scan through all aspects of yourself and not disregard any. Below is a further explanation of each area and examples of how to self-care.

  • Physical - The physical refers to the physical body and out of all 4 areas it’s probably the easiest to spot when it’s out of sorts. It’s also the area society puts the most focus on. Sickness, pain, exhaustion, fatigue, soreness, and just an overall sense of feeling like crap are some indicators that you need some self-care in the physical area. Some examples of self-care are adding healthier foods into your diet or making sure you are getting enough of each of the essential vitamins and minerals, doing some kind of physical activity (even just taking a walk outside), adjusting your sleep cycle so that you are getting enough GOOD sleep, taking a warm bath to soothe tired and achy muscles, and most importantly RESTING! Your body is sacred and when you treat it as such the world becomes a lot less formidable.
  • Mental - Sadly, mental health is still struggling to get out of the shadow of physical health. Theres so much stigma on mental health that a lot of times this area goes untouched which can cause the other areas to fall apart regardless of how much self-care you throw at them. So let me stress with bold italics to make it clear: MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH!!! Okay one more time just in case anyone missed it. MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH!!! Whew, glad we got that out of the way now we can continue. Mental and physical health are equals in regards to our overall health especially because they are strongly linked. It’s been my own experience that when one is off the other is soon to follow, but thankfully it also works in the opposite direction. Improving one will also help improve the other. So a lot of the examples of self-care listed for physical can also apply to mental. Though that doesn’t work for everyone or it will only get you part of the way. It’s important to understand that we all have our own individual struggles with mental health, with some being more severe than others especially when you take into account our home lives, our environments, our experiences, and of course our access to healthcare. So this area especially is going to have many different forms of self-care and like I said before, there is no right way just your way. Some examples for mental self-care are seeing a professional, taking your medication as instructed, finding healthy coping mechanisms, being kind and patient with yourself, meditation, rewarding yourself for even the littlest of achievements, and allowing yourself to have bad days without punishing yourself.
  • Emotional - So some might think that the emotional should tie into mental and though it is true that emotional and mental have an EXTREMELY close link, emotional can operate outside of the influence of mental allowing it to be its own area. Other than mental and physical, the emotional aspect is deeply connected to our life experiences and our interactions with people. So in a lot of cases when our emotions are in a state of chaos it’s an indicator we haven’t properly dealt with a painful experience. Or we are currently experiencing a traumatic event or relationship. When your emotions are running rampant the most crucial and mandatory act of self-care is to LISTEN! It may seem like the emotional is just being a cruel bitch, but it’s actually trying to tell you something important. Its sounding an alarm, trying to bring your focus to an area that desperately needs your attention. It’s like when your body sends pain signals to your brain when you have a wound or a broken bone. It’s telling you that there’s parts of your body that needs healing. The same goes for your emotions. They are telling you that there’s issues that you haven’t yet healed from or even dealt with. So absolutely part of your emotional self-care should be allowing yourself to heal from whatever it is that’s caused you trauma, pain, and distress. Other examples of self-care for the emotional aspect are journaling, confiding in someone you trust, allowing yourself to cry, treating yourself to what comforts you, finding or creating a place you feel safe and relaxed in, movie marathons or netflix binge watching, and being very gentle and loving with yourself. Oh and it’s also important to note that for some of us it’s natural to get emotional flare ups, especially for those of us who menstruate. In those cases, it’s still imperative to listen to your emotions (and body) which are most likely telling you to rest and take it easy! Seriously, one of the best acts of self-care for any (and really all) areas is to allow yourself time to really rest.
  • Spiritual - It’s my personal opinion that this is the hardest area to gain access to yet it also has the greatest ability to positively affect not only the other areas, but your own relationship with self-care itself. I have to say feeding my spiritual area was a game changer for me. It’s the reason I made self-care a vital part of my life and it’s the reason I’m here typing up this post. Its allowed me to start healing from my abusive relationship (emotional), its helped me learn to cope with and control my anxiety and depression (mental), and its aided me with treating my body like the sacred temple it is (physical). Now i’m not saying that all your problems will be fixed by putting all your efforts and focus into the spiritual, I just think when you make taking care of yourself part of your religion or practice, you are much more likely to see it as a priority. So ways to self-care the spiritual are being outside and soaking in nature, going to a place of worship, earthing, sitting outside during the full moon, going to the beach, meditation, sit with a deity or some kind of higher power, enjoy some silence, and spend time in sacred space (create sacred space if you don’t already have one).

I also want to stress that self-care should be a part of your everyday life not just when one of the areas goes into chaos. Getting into the habit of checking in with yourself routinely and practicing self-care daily makes it much less likely that you will even reach the point of complete chaos or at the very least you will find stability a lot quicker. Though in order to truly make a habit of practicing self-care the key concept that you absolutely need to accept and embrace is that YOU ARE WORTH IT!!! Repeat it. Say it right now! Say I AM WORTH IT! You are 100% worth dedicating time and energy to yourself! You are 100% deserving of love, patience, rewards, and kindness from yourself! You are 100% entitled to all the self-care and self-love you need. You are worth it, my friends. You are so worth it. Now go give yourself some much deserved love and care!

~Jessie

Imagine a game night at Kara's place and Kara FEED Lena her own potsticker then everybody freeze and stare at them. Lena is so confused like "what's wrong?" and Alex answers "Kara almost never share her potsticker with anyone before" Lena never knows that because Kara does this to her all the time and today she learns that sharing food is one of Kara's greatest display of affection

Okay but Kara feeds Lena all the time?!

Like “Here, try this, it’s delicious!” Or “I saw this and thought you might like it, have a bite!”

And Lena just thinks it’s sweet!

But then after a night with the superfriends she realizes that it’s a huge deal! and that Kara does it because she’s just so smitten!!

@saltyalienmilk asked: Fam, you should write a fanfiction where Michael calls Jeremy jemmy (*`・へ・´*)

Anon asked: Boyf riends fic idea that Jeremy and Micheal are hanging out in Micheals basement, playing video games or getting high or smth, and jere playfully calls Micheal a loser, bla bla. Michael has a small panic attack bla bla jere tries to help… basically it ends in fluff. Your really good at balancing fluff and angst so I decided to ask you, ur awesome! Bye.

Remember guys if it’s not ok you can ask for a redo! I’m sorry this isn’t the best quality but I hope you like it!! Let’s get into it:

“Dude, my man, my best bro of twelve years, are you ready?”

“Michael I was born ready.”

“Ready for what? Masturbating?”

“Michael!!”

i guess my point is really that christine sinclair means so much to me, and to be one of the greatest of all time on a team that could never really keep up w/ you or get you the kind of glory and results you deserve couldn’t have been easy, and she carried canada for so long asking nothing in return and just being this strong, quiet, dignified leader with an unrivaled passion for the game. and i’m so happy that as her career gets closer to its inevitable end her team is starting to catch up with her, and i’d imagine she’s proud that her legacy is gonna be these young women like fleming and rose and beckie who grew up idolizing her carrying the torch, and none of them are gonna have to do it alone because she fought so hard to make canada soccer what it is today. anyway this is just like run on sentences about how much i love christine sinclair, but i mean she fully deserves the whole world and, i don’t know i feel like her impact on the canwnt and on woso in general is really understated

Michael Latta #3 - Just Friends?

He wouldn’t call you a friend with benefits or a bootycall. What started off as a friendship had developed into late night calls, occasional kisses, and a lot of cuddling. Therefore, no. Y/N wasn’t a bootycall.

Because he would never fall head over heels for a bootycall.

Yet, that is exactly what happened.

Tom and Andre were still laughing over the line as he buried his heads in his hands, groaning. Michael shouldn’t have said anything to the two idiots.

“Man, the minute I met Y/N, I knew you liked her,” Tom gasped out as he leaned against Andre who was still laughing.

“You met her like…four years ago,” Michael argued.

“Dude, exactly.”

The two hyenas were set off again and all Michael could do was hold up his middle fingers in response. His friends were the worst.

“What do I do? She moved to LA for me. She moved to Chicago for me. Yet, she still thinks we’re just friends but, I’d really fucking like to date her!”

“Tell her exactly that,” the two idiots sobered up.

“She obviously likes you too, Latts,” Andre nodded.

“What?!”

“Oh yeah. Totally,” Tom nodded, “She looks at you like you’re the greatest thing alive. When you went out on dates back in DC, she would get all quiet and just watch cheesy romcoms.”

“What.” This time it was more of a statement than a question.

“Friends don’t just go to every single one of your hockey games or move across the country for you, idiot.”

“How have I never noticed?”

“You were kind of too busy focusing on yourself.”

“Andre?” Mike tried to gain support.

“No, he’s right you’re a massive idiot.”

“Thanks. So, what do I do?”

Thing One and Thing Two exchanged massive grins before looking back at the screen, “We have some ideas.”

Y/N didn’t know what she was getting herself into. She had gotten a text from Mike telling her to dress nice and come over to his house by seven. He had probably forgotten some gala and needed a date. The minute Y/N had met Michael Latta in Washington D.C., she knew her life was ruined. Just one glance into those puppy dog eyes and she was ready for heartbreak. Maybe she was foolish and maybe she was dumb because Michael Latta would never fall for her.

She threw on one of her gala dresses and slapped on some makeup. She opened her jewelry box. Her fingers slipped around the cool metal chain of her favorite necklace. It was the one he gave her for their friendaversary two years ago. A hockey stick and a pencil interlocked into an infinity sign. She clipped it around her neck and sighed, throwing her hair back into a sleek ponytail.

Y/N’s apartment was only a few minutes from his because “what if I want cuddles?” and “what if you have a bad day and need me there?” and various other reasons Michael came up with.

The second she knocked on the door, she knew something was up. All the lights were out in the house and it was quiet.

Too quiet.

The door quickly opened and there stood her idiotic best friend in all his delicious glory. She shook the thought out of her head and instead focused on his outfit. He was wearing slacks, a button down, and tie but it wasn’t as formal as he would wear to a gala.

“What’s going on?” Y/N frowned as he ushered her in.

“Less asking, more moving,” he ordered, leading her to the dining room.

“Mike, wha- oh.”

The dining room had fairy lights strung around the room and candles on the table. Of course there were two boxes of pizza in the center.

“Did I forget friendaversary?” she said, voice quiet.

“That’s the thing. I don’t….I don’t want to be just friends anymore.”

Her head snapped towards him and saw that he was bright red and shuffling awkwardly.

“I’ve loved you for a long time, Y/N. I just think I was too blind to see it. I would like you to be my girlfriend. Not just a friend.”

She grinned brightly and pulled him down for a bruising kiss. His hands grabbed onto her waist and she tangled her fingers in his short dark locks.

“I’ve been waiting for you to say that forever,” Y/N laughed breathlessly once they pulled away, “I love you too.”

So, as promised, there is! I edited what needed to be repaired and did what was missing and this is the result. I think I need not go into much deta as it is well explained in the photos. Any questions just ask.
