one of the best movies 2013

Just a reminder
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs went completely overbudget, and no-one believed anyone would want a full-length animated film. It created a whole new genre.
  • George Lucas thought that Star Wars was going to be such a failure, he went on holiday rather than attend the premiere. It has become one of the most influential film sagas in film history
  • The Lion King was listed as a ‘B’ movie by Disney, and thus less effort was placed on it. It became Disney’s highest grossing film until 2013.
  • Beauty and the Beast had multiple time and money constraints, and was in “development hell” since the 1930′s. It became the first animated feature to win a Golden Globe for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, Disney’s first Oscar nominated film for Best Picture since Mary Poppins, and was the reason the Academy created the ‘Best Animated Picture’ category.
  • Frozen was stuck in “development hell” since Walt Disney was alive, and had multiple redrafts and script rewrites, and a few questioned whether it would be successful. It became the highest grossing animated film of all time, broke box office records across the world, became Disney’s first movie since Tarzan to win an Oscar (and won two) and became the first Disney movie (not including Pixar) to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.

Just because a project may be taking longer than you had hoped, or you have had to redo it multiple times, or you don’t think it will be a success doesn’t mean your project isn’t good. Sometimes our most successful projects are the most surprising ones

Don’t give up!

daily friendly reminder that patty jenkins was supposed to be the first female director in the marvel cinematic universe (in it’s EIGHT film. marvel studios first female director will be anna boden co-directing captain marvel, it’s first female lead film, with ryan fleck. a man. it is mcu’s TWENTY-FIRST film, to be released in 2019. it started in 2008).

she was attached to thor: the dark world (released in 2013) but exited the project due to “creative differences”. in her own words “I could have made a great Thor if I could have done the story that I was wanting to do. But I don’t think I was the right person to make a great Thor out of the story they wanted to do.

now she’s the first female director of the dc extended universe (directing the first female lead of it in it’s fourth film, released in 2017. it started in 2013.) and made one of the best and most critically acclaimed superhero movies of all time, starring, for the first time in 75 years, wonder woman in a solo story.

kevin feige must be eating his fingers right now.

If you’re a person who needs that extra motivation to start doing your work, or to work just a tad bit harder, this might be the post for you! I’ve made a special list with beautiful movies with mixed genres that will surely give you that motivation you need to get where you want to. I hope you’ll have fun watching them!

1. Legally Blonde (2001)

A classic. Most of you have probably already watched this, but for those who haven’t, you won’t regret it! The movie tells the story of Elle Woods, who after being dumped by her boyfriend for not being “serious enough” decides to follow him to law school - to Harvard Law School! There she discovers she’s much more than her looks, and that she doesn’t really need a boyfriend to be the best version of herself.

Even though I consider the film very inspirational, it is also very light and funny, so you won’t even notice the time passing by as you watch it. Really worth watching it if you’ve recently been through the end of a relationship. Watch this, get your head up, and get back to work!

2. Monsters University (2013)

This one might be originally made for children, but who doesn’t love Pixar movies? Monsters University is the prequel to Monsters, Inc., which let us know how the loved characters Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan became best friends, and their experience at Monsters University. There, we follow Mike as he follows his dream of becoming a professional Scarer, despite of what everyone thinks of him.

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys animation, it will be very fun to watch and, at the same time, make you think about what you’re doing. Will you really care about other people’s opinions about you or work hard for what you want to become?

3. The Pursuit of Happiness (2006)

This highly emotional biographical movie, based on Chris Gardner’s struggles while being homeless, will certainly tell you a lesson about not giving up on what you believe in, and work hard. Like mentioned, we follow Chris Gardner as he tries in whatever way he can to build a better future for him and his son, while having no place to live and a position as a intern that pays no money.

I admit I teared up several times while watching this one, but it gave me a totally different mindset. If I’m a person who has everything to follow my dreams and work hard, why am I not doing it?

4. The Great Debaters (2007)

This movie shows us the story of how a black debate team, led by professor Melvin B. Tolson managed to become the first black debate team to go against Harvard’s own debate champions in the national championship. It’s based on a real article written about the Wiley College debate, which makes everything even greater!

My opinion is that everyone should watch this movie, and understand the wonders you can do if you believe that all the things you want to achieve are possible if you work hard enough!

5. The Internship (2013)

This is the story of two old-school salesmen Billy and Nick that, after being downsized because of the digital age, decide to work for Google. Then, during the internship, they must work together with a group of young college kids to complete a series of tasks to finally be officially employed.

Other than the fact it’s a hilarious movie (well, at least that’s my personal opinion), I find this movie highly motivational because we see the two main characters managing to contribute to their group with what they can even though they know nothing about technology. They still manage to do well, so I think it has a really amazing message!

6. Good Will Hunting (1997)

This is movie is about Will Hunting, who has a really high IQ, but works as a janitor at MIT. Professor Gerald Lambeau finds out about Will when he manages to solve a very difficult graduate-level math problem, but he doesn’t only help Will with his academic life, but also with psychological problems he faces as he thinks about his relationships and his future.

This movie is really redirected at thinking about your academic life, but also about what could be holding us back - sometimes we might need the help of others to overcome our problems, and see the better way out.

7. The Social Network (2010)

Here we find out the roots of Facebook and the story behind it - who was Mark Zuckenberg and how he managed to create such a huge network? This is his story, and how exactly he managed to go from a college student to a multi-millionaire. Even though being rich isn’t and shouldn’t be everyone’s ultimate goal, this movie might be the right thing to really inspire you to turn the ideas in your head into concrete things.

As of now these are my favorite movies I go to when I really need that extra motivation. I really think it’s a great idea to try and watch them before your exam season, before the start of a new term, or at any time of the year really!

Good luck on your exams and happy studying! x

Why watch: to understand that mafia is not tourism, is not folklore, is not culture, is not fascinating.

anonymous asked:

What exactly did she retcon about Kent? Not snarky, just really curious, because he's my favorite and I want to know what changed about him. Was it her feelings about him where she said that he was one of her favorites and she had to change it by saying "they're all my favorite"? Or was it a characteristic of him? I want more Kent. He's he only thing keeping me invested at this point because he has motivations and stuff. And I want him to be happy if happy endings are the endgame of this comic.

Just to be clear, retcon refers to reframing past events to serve a current plot need. For an old-timer like me, but maybe it’s just me?–the Kent/Jack relationship was retconned.

I started following the comics a few chapters in, lost interest in it, and came right back before when Kent was first introduced.

I want you to imagine reading right there with me.

So I liked this new character Kent but we knew so little about him. We knew then he’d figure in Jack’s life–and this was before Parse 1 2 3–because he was right there during Jack’s awkward teen years, Jack backtracks talking about Kent while Bittle was having his moment. Updates were scarcer than the number of movies Robert De Niro made in 2013, we pick up bits and pieces of what we could in between long time gaps, try to make sense of them (to be honest, speculating about Kent’s motivations and backstory was the most fun this comic ever was, but also the worst because haters). There were little bits of information that were set in stone:

To a Parse fan like me who’d been reading along, these weren’t just bullet points. I held onto them like a lifeline. These were the only ‘canonical’ material we had on Kent except one night of douchebaggery, but even that reeked of yearning and lashing out out of spite out of being rejected; notably what we knew of Kent and Jack before they had a falling out were largely painted in a positive light. I think you’d have been blind then to ignore how it was heavily implied that that relationship was emotional in nature. Arguably romantic, but definitely emotional. To quote a more expounded meta on this:

it’s been established that jack and kent were best friends when they were teenagers. jack is characterized as kind of awkward and private. he grew up with celebrity parents and was a hockey prodigy growing up around a lot of attention and pressure. i think it’s important to acknowledge that while jack was probably going through a lot around this time, parse was able to befriend him and support him as a best friend. as best friends they probably trusted each other with a lot of secrets, but after whatever happened to break that trust with each other, those secrets turned into ammunition. in parse3, parse happened used his on jack to express his anger and bitterness. jack probably has ammunition on parse as well, but wasn’t in a position to use it. based on the reading, i think the most realistic theory is that jack and kent are involved in a conflict where both parties are at fault.

Looking back on it now, I’m trying to read all of the above and ask myself if that was a lot of extrapolation to have made. Because right now, I still can’t look past the belief that that’s a perfectly reasonable assumption to make.

Now, after the Year 3 Comic 7 update, if you take Jack at his words, they (1) only hooked up a few times, (2) it’s Kent who never got over it (3)that relationship with Kent wasn’t anything more than “physical hockey.” Should we take him for his word? Maybe, maybe not, but I think that’s a moot question, because the comics hinged Kent’s relevance based on how heavily he affects Jack. And after that update, Kent’s relevance is nothing. The comics would present Jack now as a matured, well-adjusted adult with a lot of perspective (without any trace of his other issues existing at all) and that’s who he’s supposed to be when he says those words, and according to him, it was a meaningless relationship and Kent was just a guy he used to do sometimes.

Did we over-interpret? Maybe Jack only smiled a lot because he was getting some? But how about the things he knew he should apologize about to Parse? What about freezing out his best friend and shutting him out for years and refusing to talk to him even though he apparently knew Parse had feelings for him?

Maybe N changed her mind midway. Maybe the canon was intentionally misleading. In any case, the tvtropes page for retcon includes this:

As the number of twists and misdirections in a story becomes higher, it becomes more difficult to tell whether an event actually is a retcon (which implies that the writers changed their minds), or a misdirection (which implies that the writers intended the “retconned” version all along, and had been deliberately misleading the audience before). In some cases, it is impossible to tell, short of reading the author’s mind (even then, it might not helped, as it’s entirely possible for an author to be on the fence about what they’re planning to do)

But at the end of the day, it was still Jack buddyfucking his bestfriend while calling him a petname, and then snubbing him afterwards.

But to answer your question here are some of the information that have their ORIGINAL source material deleted by Ngozi:

this post which the wiki cites as material for the following

  • Kent is 5'10" and about 175 pounds
  • He arrived at the Epikegster in a rented Porsche 918 Spyder, which the lacrosse bros took pictures with.
  • He was Jack’s first best friend.
  • He is the only one who calls Jack “Zimms”

most of the above info were reposted here except the Porsche bit.

The sources for the following information were deleted by Ngozi too:

  • Kent’s middle name starts with V
  • that Kent has a cat
  • that Kent was born in NY
  • on July 4, 1990
  • that tweet where she says Kent was Jack’s first best friend.

Here are my favourite mlm films on Netflix UK that you can watch right now!

1. The Way He Looks (2014) - Romance

A beautiful Portuguese film about a blind boy who has to struggle with overbearing parents and coming to terms with his feelings for the new boy in school. Rating: 4.5/5 one of my favourite films ever.

2. Eat With Me (2014) - Romance, Slice of Life

After separating from her husband, Emma goes to live with her son Elliot and must come to terms with him being gay. Meanwhile, Elliot must deal with his restaurant foreclosing and falling in love for the first time. Rating: 3/5 not spectacular but very cute and funny film, also George Takei’s in it as himself.

3. Hurricane Bianca (2016) - Comedy

New Yorker Richard Martinez is fired for being a gay teacher when moved to Texas and gets his revenge by coming back disguised in drag. He takes on the persona of Bianca Del Rio, a mean and sharp witted teacher ready to take her revenge on the town. Rating: 5/5 I love this film so, so much, it deals with very serious topics in a lighthearted, classy manner and it features my favourite drag queen, Bianca Del Rio.

4. King Cobra (2016) - Thriller

Based on a true story, King Cobra is about a teenage porn star Brent Corrigan who when tries to move away from his ex-producer Stephen, finds out his name is copyrighted. Two aspiring producers who covet the Corrigan name Joe and Harlow have other plans however and turn to more violent ways of persuading Stephen. Rating: 2.5/5, not the best movie I’ve seen but definitely interesting and worth the watch.

Big Eden (2000) // Eastern Boys (2013) // A Single Man (2009)

Five years ago today, Jenna Coleman’s life changed forever

It is amazing how much can change in 5 short years.

On March 21, 2012, Doctor Who fans received the news that Jenna-Louise Coleman had been cast as the as-yet-unnamed new companion. With production under way on Series 7, the announcement indicated that Jenna, who was about to appear in a miniseries based on the sinking of the Titanic and had become well-known for her roles in Emmerale and Waterloo Road, and had also scored a bit part in the first Captain America movie, would be debuting in the 2012 Christmas special and taking over from Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as the new companion for the second half of Series 7 in 2013.

Looking back, it’s intriguing that no one thought to question the timing of the announcement, with no Christmas special filming expected for months yet and in fact the episodes featuring departing companions Amy and Rory were still a  ways from completion too (I believe they still had Power of Three and Angels Take Manhattan to go yet). In what remains one of the best kept secrets in Who franchise history, Steven Moffat and his team managed to keep the fact that Jenna would actually debut in the series 7 premiere a secret right up to the broadcast day - even with several advance screenings!

As we learned more about Jenna’s career path, we began to see that her casting in Doctor Who was a hard-fought victory. She’d spent quite a while trying without success to find meaningful work in the US after her run on Waterloo Road ended (apparently she even had to work in a London pub at one point to save money to go to LA). She got a role in a short film that apparently has never been released (though it’s trailer is still on YouTube), and YouTube has some of the audition tapes she made for parts as varied as Max, the role played by Kat Dennings on the sitcom 2 Broke Girls, and also the character eventually played by Meaghan Markle on the legal drama Suits. According to an interview she gave on The Last Leg, she very nearly got cast as an Australian in a sitcom that never went past the pilot stage. At some point she even record a voice for the video game Xenoblade Chronicles (no I’ve never heard of it either). She eventually returned to the UK and things started to look up, even though she had to endure a few “rites of passage” along the way, including a topless scene in BBC post-watershed potboiler and a role in another miniseries that seemed to require her to do little more than look good in lingerie and be convincing as a typist. Her part in Captain America was little more than a cameo, though it certainly boosted her profile (I do remember seeing some online posts asking “who is that girl?” which isn’t bad considering she was in competition for attention with Hayley Atwell and Natalie Dormer). But her role in Titanic was more substantial and things were looking up. Even though she was only about 25 or 26 when she was cast as Clara (famously getting the word when she was at a grocery store - the identity of which appears to change from time to time! - while buying an avocado), I don’t think anyone can deny that Jenna had paid quite a few dues already.

For Jenna (who dropped the -Louise a year later), it was the start of an amazing journey that saw her mature in many ways as an actress and as a public figure as she first began working with Matt Smith, demonstrating incredible chemistry with him. And then, most remarkable of all, her partnership with Peter Capaldi that not only paid off handsomely on screen, but it also launched one of the sweetest real-life friendships many of us have ever seen.

Jenna would go on to surpass Karen as the longest-serving of the Modern Era companions, along the way placing herself among the greats not only of the revival, but she holds her head high alongside the likes of Katy Manning, Carole Ann Ford, Janet Fielding and Elisabeth Sladen, as well. One couldn’t have asked for a better Golden Anniversary Companion, a title that is Jenna’s and Jenna’s alone. And although other characters may claim to have met every Doctor in dialogue, Jenna remains the only actor to - thanks to digital editing and a bit of body doubling - share scenes with, in some form or other, every Doctor from Hartnell to Capaldi (and who knows, maybe she’ll be there when Thirteen arrives). She’s also played more individual characters than any other one actress in the show. (Clara, Clara Oswin, Oswin, the TARDIS interface (Hide), Saibra (Time Heist), Bonnie, multiple other Clara echoes, several different Clara Primes in Clara and the TARDIS, and Alice Watson in the audio book Destiny of the Doctors: The Time Machine - in which she also gave voice to the Eleventh Doctor himself!)

Today, of course, Jenna remains a bright-shining star, leading her very own TV series, the acclaimed Victoria, and there’s no doubt more greatness awaits for her. Will that include a return to Doctor Who in some form before Peter leaves? Who is to say? But it’s been a great ride so far.

I wonder if she ever got round to buying that avocado, though.

#1 Favorite movies

Whip It (2009) dir. Drew Barrymore

“In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.”

Seriously, nothing screams girl power like this movie. Frankly I’d like to call it one of the best feminist movies out there. I love everything about it. The scenography, the soundtrack, the cast, the message - simply flawless. One of few movies that I can watch over and over again and never get tired of.

The To Do List (2013) dir. Maggie Carey

“Feeling pressured to become more sexually experienced before she goes to college, Brandy Klark makes a list of things to accomplish before hitting campus in the fall.”

Oh, Aubrey Plaza. Another amazing performance. It’s like the role she’s playing (Brandy Klark) was made just for her. I think this is a super funny and charming teenage movie. Yes, it is a movie about virginity, but what I like about it so much is that Brandy Klark chooses to loose her virginity to this guy that neither know her nor love her - and that challenges the idea that a girl has to ‘save it’ for the right one.

Submarine (2010) dir. Richard Ayoade

“15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life.”

Okay, I know what you think. Another virginity movie. Bur damn the scenography in this is spectacular. Some might think the director tried too hard to make it stand out (let’s be honest, no real people are like Oliver and Jordana), but I’m in love with it. Teenage anxiety, growing up, falling in love, dealing with your awkward parents and yeah, losing your virginity - that’s how I’d like to summarize it. It’s a quirky indie movie, you either hate it or love it.

Her (2013) dir. Spike Jonze

“A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.”

Wow. This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. That’s all I can say. Watch it if you haven’t already.

Blue Is The Warmest Color/La vie d'Adèle (2013) dir. Abdellatif Kechiche

“Adele’s life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.”

Probably the best romantic movie that’s not about a hetero couple. Some think it’s a movie for lesbians, but gee, no. Anyone can watch this. This one is far better than all the stereotypical-heteronormative-love-tringle movies out there (in my opinion). Adele’s and Emma’s romance is based on lust to the most extent, but that doesn’t make it any less heart-breaking. I cried my heart out to this one.

Donnie Darko (2001) dir. Richard Kelly

“A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident.”

Honestly, I didn’t understand at all what was going on in this movie until I read an explanation. But after I did that, I realized what I just had seen. The plot is kinda complex and hard to understand, but it really is a masterpiece of a movie.

Might make another list like this some other time, I hope you enjoyed it!

How Superman sold his soul and lost the power of hope.

My love for Superman began in Kindergarten when I saw the Fleischer Studios Superman animated shorts. It wasn’t long until I encountered the comic book version of Superman. I can still remember the feeling those animated movies and comic books stirred within me. It’s the same feeling countless children have experienced for over 75 years. His powers, “beyond those of mortal men”, were incredible and his adventures could span galaxies. There was exuberance and wonder when you read a Superman comic book. Who didn’t want to be Superman? For me he was a character of hope and inspiration.

From the 1930s to the 1970s the popularity of comic books among children was staggering. Superman led all superheroes with the most cultural significance for many of those years. To this day his trademark ‘S’ is one of the most widely recognized symbols in the world. As the first superhero he is the ultimate American myth, bearing the mantra “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.” Superman could always be counted on to make the right choice even when it meant sacrificing his desires for the greater good. He has survived many periods of social, political, cultural, and stylistic change. Yet, through all these changes Superman steadfastly carried on as an ambassador of selflessness, integrity and morality. That is, until recently.

Comic books felt the first rumbling of this change in the mid 80s when two graphic novels redefined the genre. Watchmen by Alan Moore deconstructed the superhero myth and gave us a world of heroes flawed and more graphically raw than anything seen before. However, it was Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns that struck a cultural nerve with the mainstream media. Miller took Batman back to his roots and put the “dark” firmly back in the Dark Knight. The details of this story can read elsewhere, but it not only redefined Batman, it cast Superman as a villain with outdated ideals. Frank Miller’s Superman was a Regan-era staunch conservative who became a super-weapon at the beck and call of the U.S. government.

The ramifications of these two stories were felt immediately in the world of comic book superheroes. In less than a decade a new breed of superhero dominated the market. Violent heroes more despicable than 60 years worth of villains were now marketed to an increasingly violence obsessed youth culture.

Superman was losing his footing in popular culture and in 1992 DC Comics killed the Man of Steel. The Death of Superman storyline was both a brilliant marketing ploy and a statement on the relevance of the “Big Blue Boy Scout”. For a time interest in Superman was revived and sales of Superman comics reached numbers not seen in decades. Eventually he returned from the dead, sales dropped, and writers tried to find new ways for Superman to continue his never-ending battle.

23 years have passed since The Death of Superman and DC’s multiple attempts to revive his popularity have left him a shadow of the hero he was in my childhood.  2006 saw Superman return to the big screen under Bryan Singer’s direction.  In this his first movie in over 20 years, Superman is portrayed as having left earth for years in search of his home planet’s remains.  Upon returning to earth he spends nearly two hours moping and questioning whether he is needed at all. To top off this triumphant return to film we find out Superman is the father of a bastard child he has neglected while off planet. The best part of the movie features Lex Luthor viciously stabbing Superman with Kryptonite. Not surprisingly the movie failed to reinvigorate the franchise and a reboot was inevitably ordered.

In 2013 Zack Snyder was chosen to bring direction to a new Superman film franchise. In Man of Steel Snyder continues Bryan Singer’s mopey Superman theme. Clark Kent is shown as a lonely outsider, and in one scene destroys a man’s livelihood because he makes fun of Clark. In one of his more heroic moments Clark allows his father to die in a tornado to keep his own alien identity safe. The whole movie is weighed down with a feeling of dread too heavy for even Superman to carry. Following a climactic battle that destroys half of Metropolis and takes thousands of lives, Superman then savagely executes the main antagonist. This plot point has been debated ad nauseam, but the fact remains Superman killed and did so in front of a family with a young child.

This Superman is no hero for children and Man of Steel fails to elicit exuberance, wonder or fun of any kind. His greatest power was his ability to transcend humanity’s failings and give us something to look up to. Zack Snyder, with DC’s blessing, has stripped that ability from him and made Superman an earthbound, sinful, mortal.

The comics have followed suit and currently Superman is a buzz cut brute, nearly powerless, wearing jeans and a t-shirt. He cusses and takes pleasure in beating thugs with his bare hands. This is not Superman. It is a sad reflection of a culture that has lost its imagination. Superman’s writers say it’s a different day and age and Superman must mature. Is this true, or is it too hard to write a hero who stands for something and is inspiring? A Superman not written with children in mind is a Superman I cannot enjoy.

As a child who spent many days in hospital rooms recovering from illnesses and surgeries, Superman was a safe escape that gave me hope. Today’s Superman can no more lift a locomotive than lift the spirits of a child. One day DC may realize how seriously lost their flagship character has become, but until that day I will not follow the Man of Tomorrow into a dark, hopeless future.
