Been thinking about all the times Daryl watches Carol and how those looks have changed over the seasons starting with his quietly impressed with her pick axe skills look! I love how he's always checking on where she is and those side glances of love and adoration are the best ones. Too many to mention but one of my favourites is the fire scene in Strangers, it's so heartbreaking. And don't get me started on his special 'Carol voice', that's a whole other ask 😉
Well love feel free to send me an ask about the ‘Carol’ voice cause I man I could talk about that all day <3
But yeah that scene in Strangers I mean he was like just sitting there next to her and not talking at all (not that he does a lot of that anyways normally) just sort of keeping her company. It just so…. you know. I mean I never thought in moment where it was so quiet and nothing was said, I could that many feels.
He just basically sitting there waiting for her to talk and if she dosen’t he’ll just sit there like a loyal dog and keep her company. Because Daryl is not a person that’s gonna incessantly ask you or pester you about how you’re feeling. He’s gonna wait you out. With Carol especially. He’s not gonna push her to talk, he knows she’ll talk if she wants to and when she’s ready to do so.
And the way he turns and looks at her, she can feel him looking at her as if he actually asked a question. When she tells him she can’t he accepts that with his quiet ‘alright’. It’s really quite awesome really.
He sort of does this again in Consumed when she’s telling him about staying at the shelter, and life with Ed and at the prison. The ‘everything thing in this life just consumes’ conversation, which is loosely that because it’s mostly one-sided. He just for the most part listens to her and love that.

One thing you noticed (and most of us do) is that he does spend a lot of time looking at her, even if she dosen’t know he’s doing it. Like he’s studying her, not in a creepy way but in an sweet way. Almost like he’s taking her in a sense. Learning and understanding, because another thing we know about Daryl is that he is pretty observant, especially when it comes to her.
He is far more likely to notice when something is wrong with her, when she’s in his line of vision that is. At the beginning of season 5 he was the one that noticed something was up and noticed she was gone.
He’s sees her better than most because he has spent more time looking at her than anyone else. And because when she’s around him she dosen’t put up the wall she does with everyone else so he actually sees her for real as well.
There has been something different in the way he looks at her as adverse to others and I think I found it in this gif by @hypernovadust simple by watching it a couple of times and I get it now.
When they are around each other he rarely takes his eyes off her. It’s like when she’s in his radar he stays honed in her completely. And when she looks at him he won’t or can’t break eye-contact for more than a second. It’s quite remarkable especially when you consider Daryl as a character. Its pretty damn unique to his interactions with Carol, as well as the voice. And it’s this intensity of contact that makes it difficult for her to front in front of him.
It’s a chemistry thing, and I noticed in New Best Friend too on the porch when his eyes seemed to follow her movements as if locking into them. Keeping her constantly in his sight when she’s around him. He literally can’t take his eyes off of her.
It’s a chemistry thing. A matter of comfort and trust between 2 actors as well as between the characters. Norman in his scenes with her, makes Melissa his focal point and his acting honesty comes from that which may explain why many of his best scenes are with her.
The strong connection between the characters and the actors shows on screen and when he stares at her, whether she’s looking at him or not, she has his full attention and that my friends is what makes those looks so amazing and beautiful.
So yeah, Daryl staring at, and/or watching Carol is an amazing thing, and I’m with you, I love that first scene, he just everything without saying anything.
