Harry Styles: Singer Opens Up About Famous Flings, Honest New LP
One Direction's Harry Styles goes deep on love, family and his heartfelt new solo debut in our revealing feature.

January 2016. There’s a bench at the top of Primrose Hill, in London, that looks out over the skyline of the city. If you’d passed by it one winter night, you might have seen him sitting there. A lanky guy in a wool hat, overcoat and jogging pants, hands thrust deep into his pockets. Harry Styles had a lot on his mind. He had spent five years as the buoyant fan favorite in One Direction; now, an uncertain future stretched out in front of him. The band had announced an indefinite hiatus. The white noise of adulation was gone, replaced by the hushed sound of the city below.

The fame visited upon Harry Styles in his years with One D was a special kind of mania. With a self-effacing smile, a hint of darkness and the hair invariably described as “tousled,” he became a canvas onto which millions of fans pitched their hopes and dreams. Hell, when he pulled over to the side of the 101 freeway in L.A. and discreetly threw up, the spot became a fan shrine. It’s said the puke was even sold on eBay like pieces of the Berlin Wall. Paul McCartney has interviewed him. Then there was the unauthorized fan-fiction series featuring a punky, sexed-up version of “Harry Styles.” A billion readers followed his virtual exploits. (“Didn’t read it,” comments the nonfiction Styles, “but I hope he gets more than me.”)

But at the height of One D–mania, Styles took a step back. For many, 2016 was a year of lost musical heroes and a toxic new world order. For Styles, it was a search for a new identity that began on that bench overlooking London. What would a solo Harry Styles sound like? A plan came into focus. A song cycle about women and relationships. Ten songs. More of a rock sound. A bold single-color cover to match the working title: Pink. (He quotes the Clash’s Paul Simonon: “Pink is the only true rock & roll colour.”) Many of the details would change over the coming year – including the title, which would end up as Harry Styles – but one word stuck in his head.

Are you interested in watching Adventure Time, but intimidated by the thought of watching 252 episodes? Have you watched the series before, but want to watch again without any filler episodes (unless it’s Bubbline, of course)? This is for you!

After seeing a request in the ATimers tag, I have compiled a list of all the Adventure Time episodes that contain major plot, important backstory, major characterization, and/or Bubbline moments. I have also included optional episodes that I think will increase your understanding/enjoyment of the show (I put the reason next to it; if it says something about being an arc, backstory, characterization, etc., be warned that not watching may make the major plot points of the show a bit more confusing for you).

I condensed the show down to 128 of the 10-minute episodes (69 episodes if you don’t watch any of the optional episodes). Optional episodes are in italics. Episodes with Bubbline moments, characterization of Marcy/Princess Bubblegum (PB), or major backstory/plot related to Marcy/PB are in bold. Anything with a an asterisk (*) can be watched at any time (order doesn’t matter, though you may still want to watch it in the same season).

I hope this helps someone out since I spent three hours putting it together! Without further ado…

On the Coastal Tip of Jamaica, actress Candice Patton stands barefoot in a sheer yellow dress before settling turquoise waters. Her arms sway back and forth as the Caribbean air billows through the thigh-high slit. She gives the camera a small smile as the sun radiates off her skin and the tide tiptoes towards the shore. The Instagram boomerang I’m glancing at has now been viewed over 200,000 times by her 1.2 million-user following.

It’s mid-June; a median between two milestones in Candice’s life - two weeks before her 29th birthday, and two weeks after the Season 3 finale of The Flash aired in homes nationwide. The superhero fiction show, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, stars Candice as Iris West, opposite Grant Gustin as the titular hero, Barry Allen. In the last three years, The Flash has garnered over 15 awards, with Candice herself most recently winning a Saturn Award for “Best Supporting Actress on Television”. It makes sense that CBS Watch! Magazine would send her over to the Caribbean for a photoshoot.

The CW star calls me from her residence in Los Angeles on a Friday afternoon, after her trip in Jamaica. I expect her to sound exhausted from her jet setting, but she’s not. To my astoundment, there’s a lot on her mind. I come to realize that, unlike Iris West, Candice Patton is equipped with a power of her own.

Why Midoriya Izuku is the Best Shounen Main Character

Alright so I’m pretty guilty right now. I have a lot of things to sort out and I still unanswered asks and oh boy do I got a lot of fanfic writing to do before summer ends and I’m opening requests soon but JESUS Y’ALL. Im a huge fan of this series and I’ll be damned if I miss writing something for this boy’s birthday. I already missed writing my Inko appreciation on her birthday but I won’t let her down!

So…HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIDORIYA IZUKU AKA BEST SHOUNEN MC

Woah, broad statement to say huh? Well, my friends, I’ve read a lot of manga, particularly shounens since that’s my more favorite genre, and I have to say that Midoriya Izuku has been the best main character I’ve ever read and I only hope he continues to grow into his beautiful character.

I mean even from the beginning of the manga, the way he was written was so completely relatable and realistic. In the very beginning of the manga, he was written to be this lonely boy who suffered through bullying and suicide comments and continuously kept going because of his obsession with heroes. From the very beginning, Horikoshi gave us this character that wasn’t perfect (rather was filled with psychological issues) and really at the bottom of the totem pole. I know a lot of people have compared Izuku with Naruto but at least Naruto was born with an incredibly gifted ability from the start. Izuku was literally born with nothing. In a society where there are heroes running rampant and where Izuku dreams about being a hero, he was literally born with all odds against him in that regard. Yet, through all the loneliness, through all the bullying, Izuku still stayed strong through all of that and continued to dream on his goal, only truly wavering once when All Might told him he should find a new dream (and even then, he still got himself almost killed but I’ll get to that in a bit).

And to add on to his realistic demeanor, I know a lot of people call Izuku a cry baby and make fun of his constant amount of crying but honestly? Imagine this: you were born a black sheep in society, everyone looks down on you, you dream of being something great but you weren’t born with the skills for it, someone you consider to be a friend looks down on you and literally tells you to go jump off a building and destroys a piece of you that you hold memorable, then you almost get killed but someone saves you, then you finally get to meet your idol, the person keeping you alive essentially and they tell you straight up that you should give up on your dream, then you’re devastated but you see that friend in a life threatening position so you literally sacrifice yourself to go save them even though you can’t do anything, and then instead of praise, you get all the blame and beaten down again while your friend gets all the praise, but then you end that EMOTIONAL DAY (keep in mind it happened within a DAY) with your idol telling you that you can be that person and he will help you achieve your dream. I won’t even go onto the other times he’s cried but honestly? I know if I was in his position, I wouldn’t have even stomached half of what happened and I’m sure most of you reading this wouldn’t be able to have a DAY like that without crying. I’m sure with 99% of you, at least once tears will shed. Izuku during his time has been through emotionally exhausting feats and I think it’s absolutely INCREDIBLE that Horikoshi gives us this raw character with RAW emotions. Through Izuku being this emotional, not only does it help us relate to him much more but it helps shows that, hey you can still be strong AND be emotional too. Emotions doesn’t equal weakness and Horikoshi really shows that tremendously, especially when the audience are a group of young ones-adults that are taught daily showing emotions is weak and you have to be strong and not show weakness because apparently crying shows weakness. With Izuku, all of that is stomped on the ground and it’s truly inspiring.

And oh boy, my favorite part of Izuku! So most shounen protagonists I have seen and come across are usually born or given this great ability suddenly and yes, while they have to train, they normally get the hang of it pretty quickly and are pretty op with it (I’m looking at you Natsu). Most of the time nakama power is enough to win the battle even though the power difference is crazy different. Yet with Izuku, it’s not like that at all. We are 145 chapters in and Izuku can only still use a small portion of One for All still and he’s gotten to the point where, because of his continuous idiotic use of One for All, he has the major consequence that if he uses it too much at 100%, he could lose FUNCTION IN HIS ARMS. OH YEA, PRETTY BIG DEAL AND CONSEQUENCE FOR THAT.

From what I just wrote, this was my favorite thing that was said:

Yes, folks, he not only says that once, not twice, but multiple times throughout the series. I think the most recent time he said it was during Episode 27 when he was climbing the walls, though I’m sure he’s said it in the future arcs and I forgot about it. Due to this new given status he was given, Izuku acknowledges that he is completely far behind from everyone else, he understands that he is at the bottom of the totem pole and that he has to work 10x harder than everyone else since he lost about 10-11 years to get used to his quirk. And throughout the series, Horikoshi doesn’t pull back on that, in fact he really drives it in that, while Izuku does become the greatest hero of all time, it doesn’t happen overnight, it takes a lot of time, training and consequences to get to that point. Even from the beginning, we were given a small glimpse of his incredible training regime and that alone just shows how much effort he has to put in and even that wasn’t enough. I won’t lie, it feels so refreshing that the Main Character isn’t some overpowered person who always gets away with his ridiculous moves, rather it’s nice that he does have consequences and that he see him actually develop into that role while he is being surrounded by others who could take that title from him.

Also, not only is he an intelligent and incredibly hard worker like holy hell, but can we talk about his personality as well? See, here is another perk about Izuku, we weren’t given some either suave person or an annoying character that makes you want to rip out your hair because they’re either too happy or too sad or too emo cringey mess. Rather, Horikoshi gave him a realist personality who thinks through, is incredibly modest and respectful, and holy fuck the most selfless character in the entire show.

I mean, we already know his intelligence and craftiness as he analyzes heroes and their moves as seen through the constant muttering he does as he watches them and his writings in his notebook

Which might I add right now that I’m really happy Horikoshi gave him this type of analytic behavior as it makes his earlier actions have a bit more sense involved in them, like due to his constant observation he was able to use moves in combat that at least got him by in the beginning

To also tie in with that, can I say that it is so refreshing to have a main character be a complete DORK about girls and such like that?? Like for someone who was lonely and only had much of the internet to interact with, it makes complete sense that in the beginning he’s really nervous around females or even touching them or talking to them.

Like look at how he talks to Ochako

Or even how he reacted when Tsuyu said to put her down

Or even how he reacted towards Mei when she had her chest all up in his grill.

Not only does having this personality trait make him a total dork and cutie but it really shows that we won’t see anything super perverted on Deku’s side. Like if he’s too nervous to talk or even touch a girl in a different manner, than it really shows how respectful he is and how modest he is and how we won’t see any pervy side of Deku anytime soon, which is refreshing for an MC to be that way since most MCs have to either touch or acknowledge their love interest’s chest before they can be established as a good character.

Though, I will say that even though those are amazing points of our birthday boy, the one personality trait of his that truly makes him a much more fitting hero than Bakugou or even Todoroki or even my baby Ochako is how incredibly SELFLESS he is. Ok ok I know that’s a common personality trait but Izuku really takes it to the max throughout the manga.

Like when right after he was told to jump by Bakugou, his initial thoughts were based on Kacchan not wanting to get severely punished by the law

Or when he risks his life to save Bakugou from the sludge monster even though he has no quirk

Or when he risks his life once again to save Ochako even though he can’t control his quirk

Or when he risks his life AGAIN to save All Might

Or when he attempts to help Ochako before her fight with Bakugou

Or when he puts his spot in the tournament on the line to help Todoroki reconcile his fire side

Or when he helps Iida with the Stain fight and notifies the entire class to come and help

Or when he even goes well over his power limit to save Kota and show him that heroes are good people that can hold on their own

Or when, even though he could lose function in his GOD DAMN ARMS, he still helps the others get Bakugou back from the villains

And note guys, I didn’t even list everything. I just listed the things I could remember but there is so much more that I could have listed as well. And legit, the things I mentioned, there was no benefit in him doing that, like during the time he did them, all there were were cons for him, there was nothing positive in any of those situations for him. And yet? He still did it. He still put himself and his wishes behind to help those around him and make sure they were successful or safe, even if it meant his own life on the line. I’ve never seen other shounen protagonists push themselves this much in only 145 chapters and I think that’s absolutely incredible.

Alright so this post is reaching to be about 2k and while I can say more about this wonderful boy, I also want to make sure that I not only post this on time but that I don’t find myself repeating the same thing over and over again. While Izuku is not my favorite character of all time, I am so happy and blessed that he is the main character of this amazing manga series. He’s grown so much since the first chapter and Horikoshi is only setting up the series more to have him grow much more and I’m excited to see how much more he grows as the series progresses. He is such a good character that is well balanced and realistic and such and I know for myself personally that I really relate to him in a lot of ways. Truth be told, it makes me actually really incredibly sad when people dismiss his reasoning for being a hero or when people just write him off as a cry baby because there’s so much more to him than just that. His reasoning to be a hero is realistic and deep enough, his emotions are realistic, his psychological issues that he faced with in the beginning shows his strength tremendously.

Izuku is one of the best main characters and I’m so happy all of us were blessed with him on this wonderful day! Yay!!! Happy Birthday Deku!!!

Tldr; Izuku’s face appears when you look up the definition of what a friend and a hero is.

Davai! (Or why Otayuri actually wins the world)

(Tweets by @Aki_the_Geek)

I’ve been thinking a lot about this comment of Kubo-sensei’s. It’s just the most adorable thing I have read in a while. I am not the biggest Otayuri fan, but only mostly because they’re seriously too young for me at this point. I do like their tandem, however, and I am enjoying the attention they are getting recently with the official photos and everything.

This comment, though, just paints such a cute picture for me: Otabek as a god of victory, like a mystical butterfly who ignores and flits past everyone else but chooses to rest on one particular mortal’s shoulder and bless him with strength and victory.

Listen, this is what is great about what Kubo-sensei said. Yuuri Katsuki has the gold rings that connect him to Viktor as his lucky charm - we know this. BUT! Yuri Plisetsky’s lucky charm, on the other hand, is Otabek Altin.

Yuri’s a great character. He is an angry teenager, but also a talented one who has big dreams and the actual skills to achieve those dreams. From the very beginning, we know this. It was even a point he has above Yuuri Katsuki.

He aims to win and does not see what others might consider obstacles. So what if it will be his first Grand Prix? He’s awesome. He won the juniors series. He can win as a senior, too.

Yuri, however, is also very immature. He is pretty poor at expressing himself and seems to shortcut through having to process most personal encounters and interactions by just being angry all the time. Affection for others embarrasses him, which is why he gets so high-strung around Viktor and Yuuri.

(I can’t really blame the kid, though. Those two just have no chill. They’re embarrassing.)

Interestingly though, Yuri seemed to calm down after Otabek came in the picture. It’s a complete 180. Yuri still had that passion, but somehow it became more tempered, less angry and more focused - so much so that the moment Otabek came in, Yuri broke a world record and then proceeded to win his first Grand Prix Final.

I am not saying that it is Otabek’s doing, like an actual god of victory. That would be ridiculous, and it’s more an expression than anything else. The timing is just pretty neat, and isn’t that how people develop lucky charms in the first place? You happen to have them right at the moment of a great win. It is also not as if Otabek was completely useless. He did provide a friend to Yuri, who thus far had been going on without someone he can actually call a friend. Everyone around him were either older than him, a competitor, a mentor or a teacher. I think Otabek calmed Yuri down by reminding him that he can just be himself… well, a cool version of himself anyway. Yuri actually sort of acted his age with Otabek around. For instance, this?

I thought Yuri was kind of cool-guy-posing here - you know, acting chill, even looks kind of smug. Lol, this reminded me so much of my younger brother when he was about Yuri’s age. He was such a useless brat at home and was pissed off at everything and nothing 99% of the time, but the moment his friends came over or one of them called him on the phone, he sort of became this cool version of himself - wittier, sharper, less fidgety. Lmao, his voice even became deeper. Smh at these boys…

What I also love about Otabek’s character is that he reminds us of Yuri’s name. Names are a big deal, okay, and I thought that Yuri being Yurio was kind of like him being a secondary character to Yuuri Katsuki - Yuuri #2, if you will. Ever since episode 2, Yuri is Yurio, and for every episode hence, he is Yurio. It was actually a bit of a shock to me when Otabek yelled this out in episode 11:

I was literally, “Oh yeah, that’s Yurio’s name.” I know Yakov and Lilia call Yurio by his name, but somehow it was when Otabek was calling him by this did Yurio become Yuri to me again. My theory is that it is Otabek’s manner, this I-know-you-call-him-Yurio-and-I-don’t-care-because-his-name-is-Yuri attitude he has going, that is somehow more convincing than anyone else. It is as if no one else matters in his world than Yuri Plisetsky. It is ridiculous to call him by anything other than his name because to Otabek, Yuri is Yuri #1. He probably calls Yuuri “the other Yuri”, “the Japanese Yuri” or just plain “Katsuki”.

So yeah, Otabek enters Yuri’s life and now Yuri has that source of affirmation that is outside family, who is a peer and even a close contemporary. He is no longer fighting alone. Yuri’s a strong guy, but he is still a kid, and at that age people can be quite vulnerable. No 15-year-old is so self-sufficient and self-confident that they can stand on their own at all times - at least not to my knowledge. That is why I love this friendship and why I love that Otabek came along. I think his coming triggered something that Yuri has long been building throughout the series but has yet to stabilize - his strength, his growth, his maturity as a skater as well as a person.

And actually, Yuri did win in the end. I think the series did not celebrate Yuri’s win enough and admittedly, even I was on such a high during those last weeks of the show that I could not be happy for him all that much. Episode 11? I couldn’t get over Yuri’s world record; I did not want to see Viktor dethroned. By episode 12, I still couldn’t look Yuri in the face. I was bitter about his world record and I was bitter about Yuuri Katsuki not winning the Grand Prix.

BUT, it’s time to face it: Yuri Plisetsky is amazing. He won the GPF on his senior debut. He beat a world record. His coach is obviously grooming him to be the next Viktor Nikiforov, and actually, the series has been hinting at it before hitting us on the face with it in episode 11 - Yuuri Katsuki is not the next Viktor Nikiforov, but Yuri Plisetsky is. What is more amazing is that he might even surpass Viktor, especially with Yuuri Katsuki as his main rival. Viktor never really had that one rival to push him up further than he thinks he can. We are told that his wins had wide margins from his other competitors. Viktor only had himself to beat each and every time. Yuri, on the other hand, won by a hair’s width and he knows it. He is even more driven now. He will push himself harder than Viktor ever had pushed himself, and that just might tip the scale a little bit more to future Yuri’s favor.

As for Otabek? Nah, he actually does not need to do anything. He is a lucky charm; he just needs to exist. With him around, Yuri is stable, and that’s all that this talented monster skater needs really.

Lol, look at this guy just watching his favorite so proudly:

“I’m not really needed here, but fuck if I’m not staying put to watch and join the cheering.”

Otayuri actually has a lot more going for them, future-wise. They are young, they are talented, and where Viktor and Yuuri are still struggling and see-sawing between victories and losses, Otayuri actually kept a steady climb. We already know and mentioned Yuri’s wins, but Otabek was also actually that steady character from the very beginning who skated well without question and was even the first to qualify for the GPF.

So, yes. In case you are asking, Otayuri is, in fact, the real power couple of the show.

Lmao, TL;DR - Otayuri just trumped Viktuuri and ultimately even stole their gold. The secondary OTP lowkey just beat the main OTP and I, albeit a hardcore Viktuuri shipper and just an Otayuri bystander at best, still find that really hilarious.

A quick Clexa AU fic list as requested by anon

This is rather chaotic as I’ve put it together real quick and I’ve plenty favorites - I might add more as I remember or as I go through my reading (some are finished, some are on-going). For now though …

[translation] Ceci 2017 September Issue - Individual Interview: NCT DREAM

Mark: Recently I keep wondering, it is more difficult than expected to keep to ones’ words. Sometimes I will unconsciously say something, I end up having to take responsibility for what I said. I want to become someone who can be responsible for my words. I observe the charms of characters who have different characteristics from me. For example The Winter Soldier in “Captain America”, is someone cold with a scarred past. Gary from Spongebob is lazy and doesn’t care about the surroundings, so I like them very much. Because I am unable to archive that. I’m the heodang (perfect yet clumsy?) of NCT DREAM. But Haechan says I have a slight resemblance to Doraemon, like I’m a main character who is able to take out something magical tools from my little pocket. I take good care of the members but sometimes I come off as a klutz.

Renjun: When people mention NCT DREAM, the words “young” and “cute” naturally comes out. There is no need to become mature immediately. I think it’s important to naturally witness our growth. Compared to Korean, it’s more comfortable to speak in Chinese, so I tend to fail badly when I try to joke around with the members. However, that does not mean I don’t have any sense of humor. I think I’m very funny. Some of the elder brothers have set good examples I want to follow. I want to become someone who is objective, clean and honest, so that people will find me cool. My favorite place in Seoul is Moomin Cafe. I love Moomin a lot, it’s white and pretty. I wish to buy over Moomin Cafe next time.

Haechan: When I was younger I didn’t really listen to my parents. My parents told me I will get suntanned don’t go outdoors to play, but I just had to go against them by playing soccer at the field. Maybe that is why I feel connected to Crayon Shin-chan, and it’s the only manhwa I have been reading consistently since I was young. As I work with various people, I hope to become someone who is trustworthy at work, no matter on stage or on usual days. I hope people who know me would be able to believe in me, needless to say for our members. I love bringing smiles to people. I call myself a mood maker right. I also like the Joker from “The Dark Knight”, compared to the main character I think the real Dark Knight is the Joker. I wish to cosplay as The Joker for Halloween.

anonymous asked:

What are other books/series that you'd recommend that are in the same vein as Animorphs?

Honestly, your ask inspired me to get off my butt and finally compile a list of the books that I reference with my character names in Eleutherophobia, because in a lot of ways that’s my list of recommendations right there: I deliberately chose children’s and/or sci-fi stories that deal really well with death, war, dark humor, class divides, and/or social trauma for most of my character names.  I also tend to use allusions that either comment on Animorphs or on the source work in the way that the names come up.

That said, here are The Ten Greatest Animorphs-Adjacent Works of Literature According to Sol’s Totally Arbitrary Standards:

1. A Ring of Endless Light, Madeline L’Engle

  • This is a really good teen story that, in painfully accurate detail, captures exactly what it’s like to be too young to really understand death while forced to confront it anyway.  I read it at about the same age as the protagonist, not that long after having suffered the first major loss in my own life (a friend, also 14, killed by cancer).  It accomplished exactly what a really good novel should by putting words to the experiences that I couldn’t describe properly either then or now.  This isn’t a light read—its main plot is about terminal illness, and the story is bookended by two different unexpected deaths—but it is a powerful one.

2. The One and Only Ivan, K.A. Applegate

  • This prose novel (think an epic poem, sort of like The Iliad, only better) obviously has everything in it that makes K.A. Applegate one of the greatest children’s authors alive: heartbreaking tragedy, disturbing commentary on the human condition, unforgettably individuated narration, pop culture references, and poop jokes.  Although I’m mostly joking when I refer to Marco in my tags as “the one and only” (since this book is narrated by a gorilla), Ivan does remind me of Marco with his sometimes-toxic determination to see the best of every possible situation when grief and anger allow him no other outlet for his feelings and the terrifying lengths to which he will go in order to protect his found family.

3. My Teacher Flunked the Planet, Bruce Coville

  • Although the entire My Teacher is an Alien series is really well-written and powerful, this book is definitely my favorite because in many ways it’s sort of an anti-Animorphs.  Whereas Animorphs (at least in my opinion) is a story about the battle for personal freedom and privacy, with huge emphasis on one’s inner identity remaining the same even as one’s physical shape changes, My Teacher Flunked the Planet is about how maybe the answer to all our problems doesn’t come from violent struggle for personal freedoms, but from peaceful acceptance of common ground among all humans.  There’s a lot of intuitive appeal in reading about the protagonists of a war epic all shouting “Free or dead!” before going off to battle (#13) but this series actually deconstructs that message as blind and excessive, especially when options like “all you need is love” or “no man is an island” are still on the table.

4. Moon Called, Patricia Briggs

  • I think this book is the only piece of adult fiction on this whole list, and that’s no accident: the Mercy Thompson series is all about the process of adulthood and how that happens to interact with the presence of the supernatural in one’s life.  The last time I tried to make a list of my favorite fictional characters of all time, it ended up being about 75% Mercy Thompson series, 24% Animorphs, and the other 1% was Eugenides Attolis (who I’ll get back to in my rec for The Theif).  These books are about a VW mechanic, her security-administrator next door neighbor, her surgeon roommate, her retail-working best friend and his defense-lawyer boyfriend, and their cybersecurity frenemy.  The fact that half those characters are supernatural creatures only serves to inconvenience Mercy as she contemplates how she’s going to pay next month’s rent when a demon destroyed her trailer, whether to get married for the first time at age 38 when doing so would make her co-alpha of a werewolf pack, what to do about the vampires that keep asking for her mechanic services without paying, and how to be a good neighbor to the area ghosts that only she can see.

5. The Thief, Megan Whalen Turner

  • This book (and its sequel A Conspiracy of Kings) are the ones that I return to every time I struggle with first-person writing and no Animorphs are at hand.  Turner does maybe the best of any author I’ve seen of having character-driven plots and plot-driven characters.  This book is the story of five individuals (with five slightly different agendas) traveling through an alternate version of ancient Greece and Turkey with a deceptively simple goal: they all want to work together to steal a magical stone from the gods.  However, the narrator especially is more complicated than he seems, which everyone else fails to realize at their own detriment.

6. Homecoming, Cynthia Voight

  • Critics have compared this book to a modern, realistic reimagining of The Boxcar Children, which always made a lot of sense to me.  It’s the story of four children who must find their own way from relative to relative in an effort to find a permanent home, struggling every single day with the question of what they will eat and how they will find a safe place to sleep that night.  The main character herself is one of those unforgettable heroines that is easy to love even as she makes mistake after mistake as a 13-year-old who is forced to navigate the world of adult decisions, shouldering the burden of finding a home for her family because even though she doesn’t know what she’s doing, it’s not like she can ask an adult for help.  Too bad the Animorphs didn’t have Dicey Tillerman on the team, because this girl shepherds her family through an Odysseus-worthy journey on stubbornness alone.

7. High Wizardry, Diane Duane

  • The Young Wizards series has a lot of good books in it, but this one will forever be my favorite because it shows that weird, awkward, science- and sci-fi-loving girls can save the world just by being themselves.  Dairine Callahan was the first geek girl who ever taught me it’s not only okay to be a geek girl, but that there’s power in empiricism when properly applied.  In contrast to a lot of scientifically “smart” characters from sci-fi (who often use long words or good grades as a shorthand for conveying their expertise), Dairine applies the scientific method, programming theory, and a love of Star Wars to her problem-solving skills in a way that easily conveys that she—and Diane Duane, for that matter—love science for what it is: an adventurous way of taking apart the universe to find out how it works.  This is sci-fi at its best.

8. Dr. Franklin’s Island, Gwyneth Jones

  • If you love Animorphs’ body horror, personal tragedy, and portrayal of teens struggling to cope with unimaginable circumstances, then this the book for you!  I’m only being about 80% facetious, because this story has all that and a huge dose of teen angst besides.  It’s a loose retelling of H.G. Wells’s classic The Island of Doctor Moreau, but really goes beyond that story by showing how the identity struggles of adolescence interact with the identity struggles of being kidnapped by a mad scientist and forcibly transformed into a different animal.  It’s a survival story with a huge dose of nightmare fuel (seriously: this book is not for the faint of heart, the weak of stomach, or anyone who skips the descriptions of skin melting and bones realigning in Animorphs) but it’s also one about how three kids with a ton of personal differences and no particular reason to like each other become fast friends over the process of surviving hell by relying on each other.

9. Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Louis Sachar

  • Louis Sachar is the only author I’ve ever seen who can match K.A. Applegate for nihilistic humor and absurdist horror layered on top of an awesome story that’s actually fun for kids to read.  Where he beats K.A. Applegate out is in terms of his ability to generate dream-like surrealism in these short stories, each one of which starts out hilariously bizarre and gradually devolves into becoming nightmare-inducingly bizarre.  Generally, each one ends with an unsettling abruptness that never quite relieves the tension evoked by the horror of the previous pages, leaving the reader wondering what the hell just happened, and whether one just wet one’s pants from laughing too hard or from sheer existential terror.  The fact that so much of this effect is achieved through meta-humor and wordplay is, in my opinion, just a testament to Sachar’s huge skill as a writer.

10. Magyk, Angie Sage

  • As I mentioned, the Septimus Heap series is probably the second most powerful portrayal of the effect of war on children that I’ve ever encountered; the fact that the books are so funny on top of their subtle horror is a huge bonus as well.  There are a lot of excellent moments throughout the series where the one protagonist’s history as a child soldier (throughout this novel he’s simply known as “Boy 412″) will interact with his stepsister’s (and co-protagonist’s) comparatively privileged upbringing.  Probably my favorite is the moment when the two main characters end up working together to kill a man in self-defense, and the girl raised as a princess makes the horrified comment that she never thought she’d actually have to kill someone, to which her stepbrother calmly responds that that’s a privilege he never had; the ensuing conversation strongly implies that his psyche has been permanently damaged by the fact that he was raised to kill pretty much from infancy, but all in a way that is both child-friendly and respectful of real trauma.

The Girl Made of Starlight

Beast!Adam x Reader

Prompt: What do you think of an imagine where the reader is Adam’s favorite character in a book, who he asks to see in the mirror at least once a day, slowly falling in love with her?

Note: Aaaaaaaah! <3 C U T E

Edit: I think I’m going to make this into a series? Someone please give me feedback? Thanks!

“It’s getting late, my little prince.” The kind queen chided her son as he sat upright in the bed. “I’m afraid it’s time for you to sleep now.”

“One more story! Please!” The young boy begged eagerly. After thinking for a long moment, the queen met the prince’s gaze. His eyes were sweet and blue, full on innocence. She sighed.

“All right, one more. And then, you must sleep. You have a big day ahead, you know.” Her smile was soft as she searched the small shelf in Adam’s room. What was there here that she hadn’t read to him yet? And then she found it.

It was an old book. One she hadn’t laid eyes on since she was at least a teenager. It had been a favorite of hers. The Girl Made of Starlight.

“Here’s one.” The queen sat down in the chair beside Adam’s bed. “I haven’t seen this book in a very long time.”

“Where was it?”

“Hiding, I suppose. Waiting for the right moment to make itself known. But nevertheless, the sooner we finish, the sooner you’ll be asleep.” She took a breath and opened the front cover. “Once, in the Kingdom of the Sun, there was a girl. To everyone around her, she appeared ordinary, boring and quaint. And as she grew up surrounded people who thought of her as nothing but standard, she began to believe that ordinary was all she ever was, all she could ever be. But that was not the case.”

“What was she?” Adam practically bounced with enthusiasm.

“Eager tonight, are we?” the queen smiled. “(Y/N) was truly more than just the daughter of the miller. She was a child of the stars.”

***

After reading a large portion of the book, the queen decided that it was getting far too late for her little prince to be awake given the events waiting for him the following day. So, despite his many, many protests, the queen placed a bookmark in her treasured favorite and put it on the shelf for another night.

But the queen never got to finish her story.

She soon fell to illness and became too sick to read. Soon after, she was gone. And as the kingdom grieved, the king became twisted. Her death was the end of him. And so was it the end of the Adam that was hopeful, the Adam that was kind.

Years later, when Adam had reached adulthood, came the curse that twisted him into an enormous, fearsome beast. The story of the star girl was long-forgotten. Adam spent years in isolation, wallowing in his misery. His selfishness had done this, his vanity. He had taken so much pride in his looks, in the beauty of the things he owned, and now that it was gone, he felt as though he had nothing.

As time passed, Adam ventured from his West Wing more and more. He didn’t want to gaze upon the cursed rose any more than he had to. It was only a reminder of his mistakes, of the grim deadline that hung over his head. The library became a refuge, a place where he could escape. The book the Enchantress had given him sat idle on his shelf, and instead, he found a home in literature. As he searched the shelf, something fell and hit the floor with a soft thud. He looked down, and there it was: The Girl Made of Starlight.

Adam slowly bent down and picked up the book with his massive paws. He brushed off the cover, and his blue eyes widened. Thoughts of his mother came rushing back to the surface. He was tempted to put the book back, to forget he had ever found it, but instead, he carried it over to the couch and began to read it.

Inside the pages of the book waited the story of (Y/N), the miller’s daughter, who was just about to discover she was not as normal as she had been raised to believe.

~Losing her mother had changed (Y/N). Every day, the glimmering star that hung around her neck only served as a reminder of the magnificent woman that had left her daughter behind. Her mother’s words were ingrained in her mind. With her last dying breaths, she had put the necklace around (Y/N)’s neck.

“Remember that there is light in everybody.” Her lips pulled into a frail smile as her husband and daughter sat beside her in tears. “And there is light in you. You don’t know it yet, but you will. No matter where you go, no matter how far you travel, I will always be with you.”

Iridessa squeezed (Y/N)’s hand as the life in her began to fade.

“You are a child of the stars. A beautiful girl with more power than you know.” She pressed a finger to the center of her chest and whispered a final goodbye as the life left her eyes. “I believe in you.”~

Adam took a deep breath and adjusted himself on the soft couch that sat beside the hearth. He had a feeling he would be there for a while.

***

Over the course of the week Adam had read the book at least twice a day, only taking brief breaks for meals and sleep. He was a man obsessed. He didn’t know why, but of all of the books in the library, this one had captured his attention better than anything he had ever read.

After finishing it for the tenth time, a strange idea occurred to him as he brushed past the enchanted rose that had doomed him to this fate, the wretched timer, an eternal reminder that his day was coming. Then, he would be stuck like this forever. Beside the rose sat the Enchantress’ mirror. The moment his eyes settled on it, he reached out for it.

He took a deep breath. This was stupid. This was a dumb idea. It would never work.

But what if?

“Show me…show me the girl made of starlight.”

The surface of the mirror rippled, and then there she was, just as the book had described. Her hair had flooded with white, and her silver eyes shone like stars. Her cloak of the sky was wrapped around her shoulders, and the necklace her mother had given her hung around her neck.

She was running. From what, he didn’t know, but at the sight of her, after watching her and realizing she was real…or at least, she was real somewhere, he almost dropped the mirror. He took a long, labored breath. She was real. She was actually real. And she needed help.

***

Days passed. Adam tried not to watch her too often, but it was hard not to. She was real. She existed, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was someone or something after her. She always seemed to be rushed. She had quick meals in little taverns, and took cautious sleeps at haphazard inns. She carried very little and showed her face to very few, most often keeping hidden in her large cloak of the sky.

With her, she kept very few things. Aside from her cloak and necklace, all she had with her was a map, a worn leather book of stories, and a pouch of coins. There was something about the book with her. Adam knew it was important to her, but he didn’t know why.

Perhaps it was why someone was chasing her.

Again, I kind of want to do a series on this, so feedback would be awesome. I love you guys <3

'Logan' Breakout Dafne Keen on Audition Embarrassment and Her X-23 Future

1. She comes from a film-friendly family. Keen is the daughter of British actor Will Keen (The Crown, Wolf Hall) and Spanish actress Maria Fernandez Ache, with multiple directors and writers in her extended family. “I remember spending entire school holidays in rehearsing spaces, watching my mum and dad working, and followed them around on tour or on film sets all the time,” she tells Heat Vision. “I went to see Hamlet, which they directed about 10 times, and I always loved it. I remember I used to listen to the actors rehearsing and try to remember all their lines while I played with the color filters they put in the lights.” From her parents, she says, she’s learned about “being truthful, and the most important thing being telling the story, and all working together for the same thing. I love that.” (x)

My Brother. My Captain. My King.

I want to talk for a little bit about Final Fantasy XV.

I grew up with this franchise. I’ve played most of the games in the series. I’ve beaten about half of them. Final Fantasy XIV, the rebooted version, has 980 hours clocked in on my Steam library.

I’m a fan. I’m a veteran. I’ve loved this series of games since I was a kid.

So you can imagine, I think, how torturous the wait was for XV to come out. That painful, agonizing decade of waiting. To finally hear the release date last year, probably one of the only things that made 2016 tolerable, only to have it delayed.

I have never looked forward to a game like I looked forward to this one. I was so excited.

And then it came out.

… If I were like a great number of people who played this game at launch, you might expect me to talk about how disappointing it was to see what this game became. You might expect me to talk about how much potential was lost. How it betrayed me. How we deserved better. But I’m not going to do that. One, I don’t agree with any of that. I think this game is wonderful. But more importantly. I cannot, in good conscience, add on to the criticism.

Because Final Fantasy XV gave me something, gave me someone, that no other game has ever given me.

I was born with Cerebral Palsy. I’m sure a lot of people following this blog of mine are aware of that. My case is minor, in the grand scheme of things. I have what’s called spastic diplegia. What this means, in simple terms, is that my muscles don’t quite work the way they’re supposed to. My left side is substantially weaker than my right, particularly my legs. I don’t have hip sockets. I do have scoliosis, though. My balance is shot, I have the knees of an old man. I use a cane for long distances, crutches for longer distances, and a wheelchair when neither of those options work anymore.

I didn’t grow up with heroes to look up to. I didn’t have anyone who shared my struggles on TV, or in my games. No movies, no cartoons, no books. Cerebral Palsy was something I talked about with my doctors, and my therapists, and my family. That’s it.

I didn’t get to see somebody like me be the hero. I didn’t get to feel like I could save the world. I grew up feeling alone, even though I was surrounded by people who loved me and supported me, because who understood me?

… Well.

In a lot of the promotional material for Final Fantasy XV, the Brotherhood anime, the Kingsglaive movie, even flashbacks in the main game, you see young Noctis, the game’s protagonist, in a wheelchair.

And in the game proper, when Noctis is grown up and going on his journey, if you pay close attention to how he runs, you might notice that he favors one leg over the other. This is particularly noticeable if you run him out of stamina and he has to stop to catch his breath. One of his outfits even sports a knee brace.

Noctis Lucis Caelum, the main character of a numbered Final Fantasy game, has a permanent injury. A permanent disability.

Does he have Cerebral Palsy? No. Is it particularly noticeable? Not unless you’re paying attention. Was it even deliberate? I have no idea. But considering my options, I honestly don’t care.

Noctis is a hero with a disability. Noctis is setting out to save his home, to reclaim his throne … with a disability. Finally, after 30 years on this earth, I can look at someone in one of these games, in one of my favorite franchises of all time, and say:

“I know what that feels like.”

Finally, I can look at the main fucking character of a videogame and see myself.

I do not, and never will, have the words for how much that means to me. How long I have been waiting for something, anything, like this.

Is Final Fantasy XV perfect? No. It has its flaws. And for plenty of people, those flaws are deal-breakers. I don’t dispute that. I will never silence anyone for that. But … but this game. This game made me cry. This game filled a void. This game healed a wound I didn’t even know I had.

Thank you, Square Enix. Thank you, Hajime Tabata. Thank you, Tetsuya Nomura. Thank you, Takuma Harada. Thank you, Tatsuhisa Suzuki. Thank you, Ray Chase.

Thank you, Noctis Lucis Caelum.

My God. Thank you so much.

A-Z Book Recommendations.

What a great idea from my friend at @macrolit :) Had to give it a go. I’ve omitted “A’s” and “The’s” from most of the titles for sake of flow.

  • A - American Gods by Neil Gaiman - A wandering modern “fantasy” that felt keenly poignant to me having grown up in the midwest. You’ll need patience for this one but this book is truly about the journey not the destination.
  • B - Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer - I’ll be honest, I never finished this series. It got a little overblown but the characters are so genuine that I held out a lot longer than I would expect of myself. This first book though is the definition of a classic middle reader. Lot of Adventure and a lovable, fierce, albeit flawed, female protagonist.
  • C - Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess - I used to read this book every summer. It’s a rough read with some explicit violence (sexual and otherwise) but an important one I think. I recommend reading the “British” publishing which has 21 chapters (the publishers took out the last one for American audiences, because apparently we don’t like character redemption and growth *eyeroll*). The real genius of this book is the vernacular Burgess created from scratch that is truly like reading another language at first.
  • D - Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab - Not to be cliche but I find that a lot of the titles Booklr obsesses over in the YA genre to be par-baked at best. Not the case with this series! Well developed characters that exist beyond their actions and exhibit real emotional complexity without relying on tropes and a plot that kept me turning and turning pages!

Tanaka and 2CT

Now that chapter 129 has confirmed 2CT, there’s more for the fandom to solidly ponder.

I have a few questions and ideas concerning Tanaka and 2CT.

1. What We Know about Real!Ciel

  • He claims to be real!Ciel and most likely is, going along with story hints and 2CT
  • He was with our!Ciel during his cult enslavement post-Phantomhive Murders.
    • His whereabouts during the attack on the Manor are not necessarily known
  • He was most likely killed (or thought to be killed) by the cultists, triggering our!Ciel’s extreme hatred and the summoning of Sebastian (which was paid for by real!Ciel’s soul)
  • While our!Ciel is more similar to his mother (sickly, possessing a weaker disposition), real!Ciel seems to have Vincent’s personality (charismatic, outgoing)
  • Our!Ciel admired real!Ciel when they were children (or at least found comfort in him during their enslavement)
  • He is most likely the “Blue Star” that Blavat is serving and collecting blood for.
  • Probably attacked Soma/Agni at the Townhouse for reasons currently unknown
  • He may or may not be some type of Bizarre Doll.
    • He shows zero signs of decomposition and seems to have memories of his past as well as strategic insight (or at least the ability to command or attempt murders)

2. Tanaka and the Twins

As the former Phantomhive butler, it’s near impossible for Tanaka to have zero knowledge of the other twin. Even further, I believe that Tanaka must know that the master he’s serving is not the real Ciel Phantomhive.

  • Tanaka spent years caring for the twins, seeing and serving them every day.
    • He most likely spent more time with our!Ciel, who was sickly and thus stuck indoors more than real!Ciel.
      • He might be closer (or appear closer) to our!Ciel rather than real!Ciel
  • Tanaka has never referred to our!Ciel as “Ciel.”
    • The flashback of the murder, in which he says “Ciel, sir,” could be a broken phrase (we don’t know if he’s addressing Ciel or talking about him)
  • Tanaka refers to our!Ciel as “young master,” not “master.”
    • It could be a personal preference, an age-related thing, or maybe a hint…
  • Tanaka is extremely astute
    • He has excellent observational skills as seen from his adept swordsmanship (like when he sliced a bullet in half)
    • He didn’t flinch at Sebastian’s death (hinting that he might know the truth about Sebastian’s nature)
    • He knew that the Red House’s stomach pains were from Sebastian tampering with their food

3. Tanaka and Real!Ciel

More or less regardless if Tanaka knows about the switch, real!Ciel exists. Where does that leave Tanaka?

  • Tanaka is a target
    • Since he sided with our!Ciel, Tanaka could be seen as a traitor by real!Ciel, a label that could lead to his demise
  • Tanaka is an accomplice
    • If Tanaka knew about the switch, could he also have found out about real!Ciel and have been working with him?
    • On the other hand, will real!Ciel attempt to recruit him?
  • Tanaka is troubled
    • Real!Ciel doesn’t really care about Tanaka’s existence
    • Whether or not Tanaka originally knew of the switch, real!Ciel’s appearance is troublesome for our!Ciel and possibly him (Tanaka).

4. Tanaka’s Loyalty

Tanaka serves the Phantomhive Household– more specifically the house led by Earl Phantomhive. There are currently two contenders– the rightful heir to the earldom and the acting earl. Tanaka has known both of these boys and can easily confirm who the true earl is. The question is…who will he serve?

  • Our!Ciel
    • Tanaka is loyal to our!Ciel, possibly due to “favoritism” or closeness with him (since again, Tanaka and our!Ciel most likely saw a lot of each other due to the latter’s illnesses)
  • Real!Ciel
    • Tanaka is loyal to the true heir
    • Tanaka feigns loyalty to real!Ciel in order to protect or help our!Ciel

5. Interesting Notes about Tanaka

  • Tanaka has most likely known Undertaker longer than anyone else in the series (depending on when he started working for the Phantomhives)
  • Tanaka could know something about real!Ciel (where was he during the manor’s attack?)
  • Toboso-sensei employs traditional characteristics or stereotypes to some of the characters (Bard being loud and loving guns/ explosions/ etc. since he’s American; Soma/Agni being Hindi, owning elephants; Germans being obsessed with cleanliness and being great at science…)
    • Since Tanaka is Japanese, could he have more knowledge about beings like Shinigami? (During the time period in which Kuroshitsuji occurs, spiritual beliefs and even religion were less prominent in Britain. I believe spiritualism was on the decline in Japan as well, but since Tanaka is older, who knows what he believes…)

6. Questions about Real!Ciel’s Motives

So your twin brother stole your identity. Cool.

There’s an easy fix to this– real!Ciel could appear to Frances, Tanaka, or maybe even go to the police to reclaim his identity. All the authorities or others would need to do would be to visit our!Ciel and verify the existence of two Ciels, thus deeming that one is an impostor. Real!Ciel could also provide details about the Phantomhives that would vouch for him before they located his brother.

So why is he part of some complicated plot, probably involving Lizzie? Another question– weren’t he and our!Ciel close in the past?

For some reason or reasons, real!Ciel is messing with his brother and his brother’s friends rather than taking direct action.

Possible reasons:

  • Something/someone is preventing him from revealing himself (or revealing the existence of two Ciels)
    • His survival would surely be questioned– he would be interrogated about his whereabouts during the manor’s attack through the current time. Does he have something to hide about the manor’s attack? About how the hell he survived the cult (possibly revealing he’s some type of Bizarre Doll)? His true activities in Sphere Music Hall?
    • Is there some condition preventing him from this? Has his memory been tampered with? Is he under someone’s control?
  • He wants to make our!Ciel suffer
    • He’s just really pissed that his weak little brother is pretending to be him and is now out to see our!Ciel break
    • He’s a sociopath
      • Loves the drama, craves the power, and enjoys knocking his brother down a peg
    • Did our!Ciel do something that contributed to real!Ciel’s murder? Perhaps real!Ciel volunteered to save our!Ciel and he’s pissed about actually dying? Was it possible to save real!Ciel but our!Ciel chose not to or ruined that chance by searching for the ring?
  • He’s honestly just in it for the drama
    • Just wants to freak people out, rather than getting his brother into boring, normal legal trouble
  • He doesn’t want to get our!Ciel in any trouble
    • So maybe he just wants to enact some fun, kiddish revenge?
    • He actually cares about our!Ciel but just wants his title back? And maybe a little bit of revenge and scares?

7. My Theories

  • Tanaka will work with real!Ciel, whether out of loyalty or to assist our!Ciel
  • Tanaka has been working with real!Ciel and has possibly been spying on our!Ciel for him
    • It’d honestly be kind of hilarious to see Tanaka emerge as his butler or something
      • I mean, the room at Sphere Music Hall was wrecked– maybe Tanaka has some pent-up hostility xD
  • Real!Ciel will be pissed at Tanaka for siding with our!Ciel (whether the man knew about the switch or not), and will attempt to kill him
    • One reason real!Ciel might try to kill Tanaka could be to silence him
      • This goes off the theory that real!Ciel attacked the Manor (or at least killed his parents and attacked Tanaka)
        • Possible evidence:
          • Vincent and Rachel appear to have been attacked from the front
          • Tanaka, though distracted by our!Ciel and vulnerable, was not killed. He easily could have been beheaded but was stabbed in the back for some reason.
          • Real!Ciel’s whereabouts are technically unknown, but the figure that attacked Tanaka was awfully small…
          • Real!Ciel’s enslavement along with his brother’s could have been a double-cross or an unrelated incident (the kidnapper(s) happened to appear during the murders)
  • Real!Ciel is a sociopath
    • He killed Vincent/Rachel and attacked Tanaka. His brother looked up to him and he pretended to be caring/ strong but honestly didn’t care, or just enjoyed the praise and attention. After somehow surviving the cult, he was pissed to discover that his weak little brother survived and assumed his identity. He wants to put his brother in his place and take everything away from him. Or even worse, he wants to kill him.
  • Less of a theory, but I wonder if our!Ciel’s constant sickness as a child was due to real!Ciel, whether through pressure, an inferiority complex, or real!Ciel having Munchausen Syndrome (in which he would have poisoned or somehow made our!Ciel sick so that he, real!Ciel, could get attention). Our!Ciel has been pretty healthy during the span of the manga… (And the few exceptions were due to his asthma acting up in damp environments– I was surprised he was okay during the cricket tournament)

We’ll certainly get the answers to most of these in time. Right now one of our answer-holders, Tanaka, is probably lurking in the shadows (or maybe real!Ciel has already got to him?! Or…he’s already working with him?!). Hope we see him next chapter!

Justice for DC and YA Heroes Panel

Sarah J. Maas = Catwoman (2018)

  • Selena’s friends are meant to draw her out from her guarded nature and be a teen in the way she wasn’t able to before because of who she had to take care of
  • Selena is toward the later end of the teen, age spectrum
  • It is dual POV (or multi)
  • There is a character named Lucas Fox, the son of Lucius Fox
    • I KNOW RIGHT LUCAS = LUCIEN, FOX !!!! I HAD THE SAME WTF OH MY GOD MOMENT
  • Selena is a bit “quiet” and guarded because of the people she has protected from a young age and growing up so quickly
  • SJM continually referenced Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn (maybe something important)

Naruto Fanfics!!

***Time Travel***

backslide by blackkat COMPLETE

This was one of my first time travel fanfics… and my first slash fanfic as well.  But blackkat is incredibly talented with her writing, and I find myself unable to find a flaw in any of her fics!  She has great skill in characterization and fluff, as well as plot.  I also recommend Stormborn, reverse, Snake in the Grass, Wolf at the Door, and, really, all her fics.  But those are my favorites!

A Wrinkle in Time by rightforlife ABANDONED

Just an epic fic.  Naruto, Shikamaru, and Lee go back in time and they are epic.  I love their relationship in here! I guess you could consider them all OP, but I found it fun that way… The fic is abandoned though, sadly.

It’s For a Good Cause, I Swear! By Sarah1281 COMPLETE

A hilarious fanfic, where Kakashi, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura go back in time and fixes a lot of things in a hilarious way. I really love how they deal with Orochimaru lol

Team Tensai and Mangekyo Sharingan by Wingwyrm COMPLETE

Team 7 goes back in time and find themselves to be kids!  They’re both awesome, though Mangekyo Sharingan is a little darker than Team Tensai, due to talks of child rape.

Thicker Than Blood by EmptySurface ABANDONED

Sasuke and Naruto go back in time, though they come back as kids.  Their relationship in here is really sweet and I really wish the story would be continued…

Time and Again by KyLewin COMPLETE (with a sequel)

A really good fanfic.  Naruto at first thinks he’s in a genjutsu, which is a little unique. It was very well written.

The Lives Worth Saving by cyywsaphyre ABANDONED

Awesome fic! And unique in that Naruto goes back in his physical body and the way he deals with Hizashi is really awesome.

Begging for Forgiveness by Freezing Rain WIP?

This is Kakashi-centric and incredibly hard on the heart because KAKASHI and he is just so messed up.  I love his relationship with his ninken in here though.

Just the Usual Habits by mapplepie ONE-SHOT

Kakashi-centric and incredibly heart-wrenching.  But really well written.

Unwanted Trip by Solara Myles ONGOING

One of my absolute favorites!  Team 7 is sent back in time and they’re, obviously, kick ass. They’re relationship with Kakashi is amazing in here.  Also, the author’s plot is very unique compared to other time travels, imo, and it’s just well done.

Parallels by QuestofDreams COMPLETE

This is more of a dimensional-travel thing, also SNS. It’s pretty good though!  The Yondaime is in here, though I think this was written before it was revealed that the Yondaime was Minato.

Silent Guardians by FallenQueen2 COMPLETE

Naruto and Shikamaru go back in time to fix stuff. They fix stuff epically, of course.

Steal My Thunder God by Nauro

Naruto experiments with the Hiraishin and finds himself on the night of his birth… and mistaken for Minato.  It’s a pretty unique idea, though I think the fic is abandoned.

Into the Future by ichilover3

SNS fanfic!  Sasuke and Naruto go into the future and find their future selves in a relationship.  It’s a lot of smut/fluff, but it’s cute and funny.  Not much for plot though, since the focus is on the pairing.

Yet, mad I am not by Erisah Mae ONGOING

Itachi-centric.  He dies and finds himself in the past of another dimension.  It’s a pretty awesome fanfic, and I really like Itachi in here!

Escape Artist by Fiorea POSSIBLY ABANDONED?

MinaNaru.  It’s a really good fanfic, and it made me like the pairing cause of the way it’s done. Naruto has a lot of issues he has to go through in here, and Minato helps him.  They have a very cute relationship, which starts off as friends with Minato hinting interest and Naruto being his lovely oblivious self. But it’s super cute and very well done. Really hope it’s not abandoned.

History has its eyes on you by tasalmalin COMPLETE

Kakashi-centric! It’s a five-part series, and it really explores Kakashi’s mental state very well.  The whole series is well done and does justice to Kakashi’s character.

A snake among the leaves by blackkat COMPLETE

Orochimaru goes back in time and he brilliantly fixes stuff, much to the suspicion of everyone haha.

Hush by Xov ABANDONED

ItaNaru.  Naruto goes back in time, but it seems to be another dimension.  Naruto tries to fix stuff, but he realizes he really can’t because of it being a whole other dimension and all. Minato is alive in here and Naruto has PTSD.

Tampering with Time by Palaserece ONGOING

REALLY good and one of my absolute favorites! Minato goes back in time, but as a sort of reincarnation.  The fic is well-written, really long and still updating, and it’s really awesome because of the characterizations!

Stumble by writer168 ONGOING (nearly complete)

Sakura and Sasori go back in time!  Sakura is epic in here and Sasori is hilarious. There are also other characters go back in time but I won’t spoil it!  Sakura has serious trauma in here.  The characters are all well done and I love her frienship with Kakashi!  (I’m a total Kakashi fan… if it isn’t obvious by now…)

Blind Stars of Fortune by 100demons ONGOING

Kakashi goes back in time and into his 20 year old self!  Well-written and awesome plot!  I just love Kakashi.

Walking Backwards on a Tightrope by Lithos Maitreya

Really good fic!  A lot of people go back in time, including Naruto, Sasuke, Shikamaru, and Shino.  It’s well-written and interesting in its twists.

Shinobi Rules by Squishfie

One of the few fem!Naruto fics I enjoyed… mostly cause it’s KakaNaru lol.  But Naruto goes back in time and becomes a student under Minato.  It’s a cute story, imo.

***Gen Fics and Self-Inserts***

Naruto Hatake by Agent-G COMPLETE

I really like the idea of Kakashi adopting Naruto and kind of wish he had, even though I understand he couldn’t (mentally).  Just a really cute fic with a good plot.

Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen ONGOING

One of my first self-insert fanfics and one of the best. It made me fall in love with the Nara Clan.  Just INCREDIBLY well-written with amazing plot lines.

Sakura by Darkpetal16 COMPLETE

A SI where the person finds herself in Sakura. Hilarious and the character’s pretty awesome.  Good plot too.

Déjà vu no Jutsu by Vixen Tail COMPLETE

Really well-written SI, set before/during Third Shinobi war.  I like Minato in here :) Really, all the characters in here.  Also chibi!Kakashi is adorable.

Naruto: Myoushuu no Fuuin by May Wren ABANDONED

A what-if fic.  What if Naruto was a seal master at a young age?  Really well written and pretty awesome! :D

The Prodigy Namikaze by SoulReaperCrewe

Features Kushina and Minato alive.  Does have Naruto neglected at a young age by them though… But, otherwise, a really great fic. I think Naruto is a little OP in here, and slightly OOC sometimes, but I still enjoyed the fic and it has an interesting pairing.

Unplanned Paternity by TwinTrouble ABANDONED…?

Another fic where Kakashi takes care of chibi!Naruto! It’s one of my favorites and just really well-written and pretty long too.

Broken by azfaerydust COMPLETE with a sequel!

An angsty and fluffly Kakashi adopts Naruto fic. The author characterizes Naruto and Kakshi well, since they both are very traumatized in this fic.  It’s just adorable because Kakashi is overprotective and ahh! One of my favorites and I’ve reread it way too many times!

Of Harrowed Hearts by Sable_Scribe ONGOING

REALLY amazing and one of my favorites!  Naruto and Team 7 is awesome in here, and Kurama is also amazing. The story updates weekly (as of now) and it’s super satisfying and I love the plot.

Tuna Fish and Red-Splattered Pages by Pitch Black Magpie ONGOING

I really love Team 7 in here.  Naruto and Sasuke’s frienship is pretty awesome as well. Naruto’s character is very… unique too. I like the supernatural side of the story too, though I guess it seems slightly crack-y.  I like the view Naruto has of the Uchiha as well.

A Political Perspective by VJ Riddle

Kakashi creates an epic Team 7.  Really wish this had happened in canon tbh.

The Somewhat Cracked mind of Uchiha Itachi by Kereea

Hilarious!  I really love Itachi in here and, really, everyone.

Blood Sings by Fireun Feather ONGOING

Naruto is a half-demon in here. I like Minato and Naruto in here and their father-son relationship.

Chiaroscuro by boomvroomshroom

Shikamaru-centric!  I really enjoy the plot.

***Pairing fics***

(mostly slash fanfics… you have been warned)

~SNS

(A lot of these fics are dark with fluff mixed in… because I can’t see SNS being totally fluffy.  It doesn’t really fit in with how I see them.  They’re both messed up people, Sasuke more evidently.)

Sound of Dreams by zrina COMPLETE

Really, really love this one because it features an amazing plot, is super long, and I love the characterizations of Naruto and Sasuke.  This is a NaruSasu fic and really well-written.

A World of Truth by luchia COMPLETE

Enjoyed this one because it’s in Sasuke’s POV and I liked how his character was done in here. It shows he’s very human, but not irredeemable.

Hopeless Wanderer by dawnstruck (series)

Super dark but really delicious.  Sasuke takes Naruto with him when he defects and wow… it’s really good!  Their relationship is very codependent, which, in reality, they are based on canon imo. I like the idea of Naruto and Sasuke leaving Konoha together tbh.

Post-Traumatic by IsolaVirtuosa COMPLETE

Really long and incredibly dark at times. Sasuke is really messed up in here and Naruto isn’t altogether sane himself.  Their relationship is very messed-up, but the ending is satisfying after that roller-coaster of a journey.

All In by Narutos Mother (momhuey) COMPLETE

The second half of the story is VERY dark, but Sasuke is super sweet in here. Slight Sakura-bashing?  She’s the villain of the story in here.

Lost on the Road of Life by shherie (series)

Cute story (it’s the first in a very cute series anyways), but Sasuke and Naruto do have issues getting into a relationship. Naruto is determined in here though and Sasuke is his bastard self in the first story, though absolutely adorable in the rest of the series.  Hachi, the sequel after a series of one-shots, is really good too!

Titanic by meowstelle ONE-SHOT

In Itachi’s POV and an AU.  But I found it really hilarious.

Breaking him down by IvvyMoon COMPLETE

Another dark fic, because Sasuke is an utter bastard at the beginning, though he redeems himself.

Healing the Broken by KizuKatana COMPLETE

Dark and angsty, but their characters are done well. Great ending and plot.

An Invincible Summer by ShanaStoryteller COMPLETE

Naruto is gender-fluid in here, but WOW is it done well! The whole story is absolutely amazing and I didn’t want it to end!

Phoenix Rising by Kai_Maciel

This isn’t really SNS, because Naruto ends up raising Sasuke (you have to read it to find out why), but I really like the relationship because chibi!Sasuke is adorable and Naruto as a father should be this way, not the way he is to Boruto.

For Brothers Share This Bond by bluedemon92 COMPLETE

Okay, this is the definition of dark and angsty. It’s really hard to read sometimes because of the issues… but it’s more Itachi-centric, with SNS.  But it has a unique plot and is well-written. Also KakaIta and KisaIta.

The sun within me by fangirlandiknowit ONGOING

Sasuke and Naruto find themselves in another dimension (from the movie Road to Ninja) and the plot is interesting.

~KakaNaru

(One of my OTPs, nbd)

A ninja must see underneath the underneath by Blooregard89 COMPLETE

KakaNaru and their frienship-to-romance is cute.

Things Just Ain’t the Same Any Time the Hunter Gets Captured by the Game by barspoon COMPLETE

ONE OF MY FAVORITES.  She does the relationship REALLY well and it’s just amazing.

Konoha’s Orange by purplefox COMPLETE

Good plot and it’s interesting, that’s for sure.  I like that there’s a bit of dimension travel in here and I like the relationship.  Kakashi is the one who’s oblivious in here, which is pretty funny.

A Safe Haven by Red_Hot_Holly_Berries ONGOING

I like the plot in here and I really look forward to the rest!

When You Look Me in The Eyes by blueicequeen ONE-SHOT

REALLY like this one!  A long one-shot and their relationship is super well done. Especially since it’s just a one-shot!

Fifteen Million Ryo by Riya3 COMPLETE

An interesting plot idea and I like how the relationship comes about.  It’s also funny and the side story with Sakura and Sai is done well.

(If you have other KakaNaru fics, I’d really, really love you if you’d let me know. There aren’t enough in the world…)

~Other Pairings

Break to Breathe by Okami Rayne COMPLETE (series)

ShikaNeji!  Interesting plot and the characterization is well done, to say the least.

Hyakumensou by Agni ABANDONED?

ItaNaru!  I like the idea of an arranged marriage and I like how the relationship progresses. Though Itachi could be considered slightly OOC, but I still enjoyed it.

Dimension by YukiwaFuru ABANDONED…

NaruMina… short, but I really enjoyed Naruto in here. The relationship was only a friendship, from what is written.

Walk the road of life by LasySwitch COMPLETE

KakaObi.  A soulmate AU and it’s cute.

Stalker by SweetDreamsAreMadeOfNaruto ONESHOT

A dark ObiKaka.

Kiss and Run by SweetDreamsAreMadeOfNaruto ONESHOT

Cute KakaObi!

It’s Just That Any One of Us is Half Without Another One is You by Branch COMPLETE

This is largely Gen and takes the original Naruto plot and fleshes it out and gives a lot more justice to the plot.  It ends up being SakuSasuNaru.

In Bond and Blood by thehoyden ONESHOT

KakaIru.  One of the few KakaIru’s I enjoyed!

A Set-up For A Romantic Comedy by sleepyjeesh COMPLETE

KakaObi!  Super cute and I like Obito in here!

Surrender by triste ONESHOT

Dark ItaNaru!  Interesting idea though.

Your heart is a weapeon the size of your first by blackkat

ZabuNaru (rare pairing).  It’s well done because blackkat somehow makes any pairing work!

Another reincarnation story by HeavenOnFire COMPLETE

KisaIta.  Itachi is reincarnated, as well as Kisame. It’s a nice story with a good plot.

The Grey Crayon by checkerbloom COMPLETE

MinaKaka.  Chibi!Naruto is super adorable!  The whole story is cute.

The Way Things Are by Aini COMPLETE

ShikaNeji.  It’s a cute story and I like the pairing :)

A-Z Book Recommendation

I heard @macrolit started a trend of A-Z Book Recommendations? I may be late to this party but it looked like fun, so here are mine!

(Much to my chagrin I had to cheat on Q and Z; and V is also a bit of a cheat since I haven’t actually finished reading the book yet. On the other hand I did manage to get through it without repeating an author. Enjoy.)

  • The Archer’s Tale by Bernard Cornwell (also published as Harlequin). An adventurous historical fiction novel diving into the life of an English longbow archer in 14th c Europe
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. One of my favorite books of all time; I sob like a baby every single time I read it. By turns heartwarming and heartwrenching, it tells the story of a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany, stealing books and finding escape and solace in reading. It is beautiful and unusual in its style, narrated by Death and painted in vivid imagery.
  • The Chimes by Anna Smaill. A moving and strange dystopia novel about a world where memories have been destroyed and people communicate using music.
  • Dune by Frank Herbert. A powerhouse science fiction novel, Dune is at once a space opera, a political thriller, and a study in religion and survivalism.
  • L’étudiant étranger by Philippe Labro. An autobiographical novel about the sometimes comedic, sometimes serious experience of Labro’s life as an exchange student at a US university.
  • The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. I’m sure this one needs no introduction - the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy remains, in my opinion, one of the best books ever published, and debatably the best fantasy epic of all time.
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. A very dark but smart and exciting crime novel.
  • A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. It’s more accurate to say that I experienced this work than that I read it. Part autobiographical, part stretching the factual truth to tell an emotional one, part wild invention, this is the story of Dave and his little brother, Christopher, making their way in the world after the death of both their parents. It is stylized and designed to pull the rug out from under you, toss you out of your comfort zone, and it’s either insane pretentiousness or exactly what it claims: staggering genius.
  • Incarceron by Catherine Fisher. A futuristic fantasy novel about a living prison, the society that built itself inside, and those on the outside living a lie. A fascinating world to dive into.
  • Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. A massive brick of a book but well worth the time for the subtle and detailed world building. It takes place in a slightly different England, where magic was once a fact of life but has long been relegated to a purely theoretical field, until Mr. Norrell teaches himself how to be a practical magician.
  • Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. A thrilling adventure story, following the journey of a young boy who ends up caught in the power struggles of 18th c Scotland.
  • The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I don’t care how old I get or how many books he publishes, Rick Riordan will always make me laugh, and I was raised on Greek and Egyptian mythology, so I always adore seeing Riordan play with sticking the gods in the modern day world.
  • The Martian by Andy Weir. Even if you’ve seen the film, the book is still well worth a read. Weir’s story about a man stuck on Mars is both dramatic and funny.
  • The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter by Malcolm Mackay. The choppy style of this book can get on my nerves, but it’s a fantastic and smart crime novel that somehow gets you rooting for a professional hitman.
  • One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. A tragic but moving and at times inspiring dive into the oppressive and cruel world of psychiatric care in the 1960s.
  • Pnin by Vladimir Nabokov. A series of vignettes about an exiled Russian professor told through the eyes of an unreliable narrator.
  • The Heretic Queen by Michelle Moran. Although she takes great liberties in the realm of historical accuracy, Moran’s Ancient Egypt is nevertheless a compelling and exciting world.
  • Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett. I could’ve listed any Discworld book on here because I have yet to read one I dislike, but I did particularly enjoy Raising Steam’s dip into steampunk and the Industrial Revolution, and its relationship with the fantasy life of Discworld
  • Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. A story about a Shakespeare troupe in a post-apocalyptic world, so I was basically destined to love this. It follows the story of several different characters before, during, and after a near-extinction level plague, tying together the different narratives.
  • The Tragedy of Arthur by Arthur Phillips. Written as if it were an autobiography, this is the story of a man whose father, imprisoned as a con man, leaves him what seems to be a lost Shakespeare play when he dies.
  • Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I read this as a young teenager and I still love it; it’s a good combination of an adventurous YA sci-fi novel and a reflection on the societal fixation on beauty
  • The View from the Cheap Seats by Neil Gaiman. A collection of speeches, essays, introductions, and more.
  • The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. The sequel to The Name of the Wind, Wise Man’s Fear keeps me just as captivated and invested in its main character as the first one did.
  • Xenocide by Orson Scott Card. In all honesty it’s been years since I read any of the Ender’s Game books and this was just one of very, very few books I could come up with that had an X in the title, but I remember it being really good sci-fi and social commentary.
  • The Year of Lear: Shakespeare in 1606 by James Shapiro. An incredible book on the social and political context of Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra, and King Lear.
  • The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. An amazing book set on Dejima at the turn of the 19th century, about the clash and exchange of culture between the West (primarily the Dutch) and the Japanese.
Chrom: VA Matthew Mercer

You know, yesterday’s post was pretty intence. I do like that I was able to get some frustrations of my chest rather than let them boil under my skin, and based on the reception of that post a lot of people seem to agree with me and what I pointed out. But one I want to avoid becoming is little miss bringdown. So I decided to brighten up the mood a bit by delving into the realm of voice acting.

And who else better to start with than with my real life senpai, Matthew Mercer.

God, he’s so gorgeous, even in real life…

*clears throat* Anyway, let’s take a look at some of the characters our dearest has leant his lovely voice to.

Now Fire Emblem fans likely already know he has voiced a few characters in recent games, including two of my favorites, Chrom and Shigure. You also likely already know from a previous post that he also voices Yusuke in Persona 5. Plus, any Overwatch player already knows that he voices McCree.

But now it’s time to list off some of his other roles.

To start and build off that gif, he actually voices

prince Diamond from Sailor Moon (or prince Demande if you’re watching Sailor Moon Crystal). And considering this anime is rather old, it goes to show just how long he’s been in the business.

And that’s not the only long standing anime he’s been a part of. He’s also voiced

Trafalgar Law from One Piece.

And as it that’s enough to surprise you, he’s also voiced

Shukuro Tsukishima from Bleach. I don’t know much about him, since I haven’t watched Bleach in years, but he is one handsome man.

In fact, Matthew seems to have a bit of a habit playing characters who are pretty handsome.

For one, he voices someone from one of my favorite anime:

Joker from Black Butler.

There’s also

Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 6.

We also have

Lao from Xenoblade Chronicles X.

And to top off the handsome men he likes to voice, he’s voiced

Jai Chong from Dynasty Warriors. And I’ve heard the way he voices ths guy, and I can now say that Matthew can do one hell of a Sephiroth impression.

He also voices

Taishi Ci, but I don’t really hear people talking about him, so moving on.

Now these next two are definitely going to satisfy certain fans. For any Phoenix Wright fans, he voices

Nahyuta Sadmadhi in the most recent game.

And to fans of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, he voices

Jotaro Kujo.

But Matthew isn’t above voicing smaller roles. He voices

Fei Long from Street Fighter and

Cor from Final Fantasy 15.

But one that surprised me was learning that he voices

Skelter Helter and

Bishop from No More Heroes 2. I swear I never noticed this. Just goes to show how good his vocal range is.

But these last two are really note worthy.

Turns out Yusuke is not the first Persona character he’s voiced, as he also voices

Kanji Tatsumi from Persona 4. Now based on what I saw he voices Kanji in the animated series not the actual game, but I doubt it’s that big of a deal.

And the last voice we have for our lovely Matthew is

Levi from Attack on Titan. I actually just recently heard Levi’s voice from watching a video, and it does fit very well for him. I really got to work on getting back to watching Attack on Titan so i can hear more of his performance.

As you can see, Matthew Mercer really has a wealth of experience when it comes to voice acting to have so many roles under his belt and can achieve a large range of tones and fluxes with his voice.

Now do you guys see why this man is my real life senpai?

And before anyone comments; yes, I am aware that he is currently engaged to someone else. But, hey, I’m still young and i got a lot of time and patience for the future.

Just you wait Matthew Mercer, you will be mine one day.
