one day you will be king and you will understand

jalapeno--business  asked:

So whenever I read trc, I'm always overwhelmed by this almost pathological desire to experience the same feelings of wonder and beauty and magic that you describe in the series. Yes, I understand that there is no sentient, magical forest to discover, and no sleeping king that I can search for, but I still have this urge to have similar feelings and experiences in my life. So how do you experience a similar kind of magic and wonder that you describe in your books, in everyday life?

Dear jalapeno–business,

Are you listening closely?

As an author, I travel a lot. At one point, I was on the road one day out of every three — planes, hotels, rental cars. There’s a rhythm to it, like running up a very long flight of stairs. You figure out how many stairs you can take in a jump, and how to breathe-in-breathe-out to keep from wasting your lungs, and you learn how to tell when you have to stop to rest your knees or you just won’t make it to the top.

The airports and the planes and the people can all start to seem the same after awhile, if you’re looking at them wrong. If you let them. Anything in life can sound ordinary if that’s all you’re listening for.

Back in 2014, I was in a Texas airport. The night had that glittering senseless jitter to it that happens when you’re tired but going home, finally going home. I was early for my flight and sitting several gates away from my real gate, listening to music. A young man sat down two seats away. Ordinarily, tired and occupied with the peculiar every-day magic of the music in my headphones, I wouldn’t have noticed him, but a moment later, a phone rang. He asked if it was mine; it wasn’t. Someone had forgotten it on the seat between us.

We both looked at it.

It rang again for someone who didn’t know to pick up, and then he took it away to one of the United desks for them to give it to someone who would listen. He didn’t return.

Two hours later, I went to my real gate to board. Full flight. Everyone was checking and double-checking their seat assignments as they defended their right to aisles and windows. When my seatmate settled himself next to me, I looked up, and it was the guy from the waiting area. He had a tilt to his chin that telegraphed that he thought he was hot shit and a grin that said he recognized me.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

We laughed ruefully and applied our headphones — we both knew the routine of polite air travel. But the agreeable tingle of the coincidence still ate at me, and I could tell it ate at him, too, because after a few moments, he offered me a truffle from his bag. I told him I couldn’t take it because of my allergies, but the headphones came off. We started to talk.

And he was a big talker. He was cocky. A surgical resident. He told me how he loved the hell out of taking internal organs out of people. He described how he listened to sixty-minute epic soundtracks in his ear buds while he removed appendixes and gallbladders, kidneys and stones. He told me of watching Dateline by himself at the end of seventy and eighty hour work weeks, and he told me about his Hyundai, which I made fun of. Confidentially, he whispered to me about a surgeon he knew who had the goal of removing every gallbladder in Texas. Two hours into the flight, the conversation tilted toward spirituality. He’s hot shit, he confessed, and works hard, but he sometimes wonders if he’s allowed to want to be successful, or if that makes him a bad person. Because he’s working a lot of hours in a week, and he’s tired, but he’s pretty sure that he’s hot shit, but maybe that’s not allowed.

I was watching him fumble his fingers over each other. He was scratching a hole in his own palm.

And all at once there was a phone in my head, and it was ringing just for me.

“One of your parents has obsessive-compulsive disorder,” I told him. “Maybe both.”

The shimmering grin slipped. “How did you know? How could you know that?”

I asked him if he was getting treatment for it.

He said, “No, no, I’m over it. How could you know that?”

Because in a foggy way, that phone was still ringing between us, and now, I recognized the number.

I said, “Don’t kill yourself.”

He replied, “No way,” and then he started to cry.

The shit-eating grin had vanished. He told me how he’d made up his mind that he didn’t want to make it to 35. He’d researched all the ways to make sure he didn’t. Over the next hour, I told him about my OCD, and how I thought his uncertainty over wanting to be successful but also wanting to be humble was a function of his OCD’s spiritual obsession. That he wasn’t over OCD, that you never were, but that his agony didn’t have to be a real thing. He could be both humble and successful. It wasn’t against the rules of goodness to be proud of what you’d done, as long as you were doing things for the right reasons. I told him how once I bought a race car, but I’d given it away to someone who could use the money, because I realized I was only racing to look sexy in a car, and not because it was really making me happy.

I told him he didn’t have to worry about looking sexy in a Hyundai, though, and he replied that he would look sexy in anything, and then he cried a little more.

Everyone else in the plane was asleep, but we were wide awake.

When we got off the plane in Virginia, the surgical resident gave me an awkward side-hug, and he wiped his face. Then he dug in his bag for the wrapper from his truffle. As the other travelers shuffled past us sleepily, he pressed it into my hand. He didn’t want to give me his name, he said, but he wanted something for me to remember so that when we ran into each other again in 15 years, I’d know who he was.

After we’d parted ways, I turned my phone off airplane mode, and a text came in that had been sent while I was in the air. It was from the person I’d given the race car to. I hadn’t heard from him in nearly six months. The text said only: thank u maggie i have such a hppy life bc of u

Magic.

You have to be listening closely. Phones are ringing all over the world, and sometimes they look like magical forests, and sometimes they look like race cars, and sometimes they look like surgical residents.

Stiefvater

Bullet Journal Quotes

Since my planner starts July 2016 and ends July 2017 I’ve been using it as a bullet journal for the summer until I start school again next week. I’ve been writing quotes, tips and odd bits of information in the space for each day instead of homework. Now it’s the end of summer I have collected a lot of quotes that I hope you guys might like. They may seem random but they do correspond with what i did or was feeling on the day.

“Death is only the end if you assume the story is about you.”

Aries —
there was a war in your childhood home, and you can still remember the fires, how the blood was
pretty and sick on the bathroom’s pristine tiles, your mother’s still warm body limp in the tub.
breathe in through the mouth: in, out, in. you are not guilty. her life is not on your hands.

Taurus —
it is okay to love things more than you love people; practical, even.
people have left you, people will leave you – things, though, ah! things will not abandon you.
buy yourself something nice. it is the least bad out of all your choices.

Gemini —
you die every night and are reborn at dawn; you are a walking graveyard,
an army of yesterdays’ ghosts, and you no longer remember who you were at the beginning.
do not weep for the stranger that once inhabited your bones.

Cancer —
you are in love with the idea of love more than you are in love with your lovers;
that is why all your relationships are fleeting, why you are always falling apart.
all the same, smile when he proposes. pretend you do not know how this is going to end.

Leo —
oh, you poor, poor thing. all you have ever wanted was love’s sunlight, but all you ever got
were the thunderstorms, the clouds above your head heavy with sorrow, and so you chose
to drown out the rain between the thighs of a lover. do not regret it, for they were good nights.

Virgo —
you cradled your heart all your life with such care, and when the day came for you
to hand it to another, it shattered like glass in their grip. they did not mean to hurt you, you know.
they just wanted to hold on, afraid it will slip through their fingers like sand.

Libra —
you are the king of bad choices, from lovers to the fights you pick when you are far from sober;
you lost your sanity along the line between what is right and what is not, and you started hungering.
i fear the day your hunger will be quenched – only justice will sate you, and that calls for everyone’s dying.

Scorpio —
you are the one everyone fears: the monster in the closet, the witch at the stake – the devil, falling.
all of this is because they cannot understand you. they fear you like they fear death; instinctively.
do not mind them, for death is a kind god: the sweetest sleep, the darkness from which life is born.

Sagittarius —
some days, you think the sea is but a giant mirror, the vanity of coquettish stars and lazy clouds in passing.
some days, you think it is the fury of our earth mother, her tears and her sorrow saltwater in the breeze.
on all of them, you want to sail its’ lengths; you want to get lost out on the abyss, feel small beneath the sky.

Capricorn —
you learned early on the art of silent war – the war carried by words, sharper than any other blade.
at the same time, you have learned how little you mattered to the world, and so you cast yourself in armor.
i just wish you would learn to love yourself, if only a little. your own words have been cutting you all along.

Aquarius —
there is a sickness in you called longing: you’re wanton, thirsty, hungry, wanting – what, exactly,
well, that is part two, and none of us is really sure. you’re standing here, hands reaching for; come inside.
i will pour us both some wine, and we can pass the waiting time together. one day, you will know what you are lusting after.

Pisces —
all you have ever loved seems to be taken from you, until your house is left an empty, cold thing,
and your soul has been turned into a ruin. do not despair; get up from the floor, dust your clothes.
there are seeds on the upper shelves in the shed. it is a time as good as any to start keeping a garden.

The King

Summary: King Arthur-ish AU featuring Negan as a medieval king. It had to be done. It just did. Sorry.

Warnings: Negan…language, smut, violence. Possible dub-con. Posessive Negan. Darker than I usually write. No fluff. There is no historical accuracy intended in this piece. I barely utilized the google.

It was a day of celebration throughout the land. Banners flew in the breeze. Cheers and songs could be heard around the castle and surrounding city. The king had married a lovely new bride from a neighboring kingdom a week ago, and today the rest of the kingdom came together to watch the festivities and sport that only tournament can boast. Knights traveled to compete in hopes of winning fortune and glory and perhaps a place at King Negan’s legendary table of knights known as the Saviors. For it was they, that protected the surrounding lands from invaders and pillagers in return for tribute.

Villagers came from far and wide to witness the spectacle and to catch a glimpse their beautiful new queen. For a beauty Queen Gwendolyn was.  Red flowing locks braided in intricate patterns flowed down her back. Her porcelain skin was the envy of all. Large green eyes adorned with long thick lashes watched as each event play before her eyes. Lips the shade of a dusky rose formed a dazzling smile as cheered for the victors from her private box in the stand. The king had decided to participate in his favorite event, the melee, at the end of the tournament and was awaiting his turn on the side of the field while the jousting commenced.

The last knights lined their horses at opposite ends of the tiltyard. Each bowed to the queen. Their visors were lowered. The horses charged. The lances pointed towards the other. They hit each other with a resounding blow.  One knight fell to the ground. He struggled to stand but fell back in defeat. His squires hurried to help him off the field and to corral the horse.

The victor, Sir Richard of Alexandria, walked his white horse along the edge stands and removed his helm. He shook his wavy locks damp with perspiration. His blue eyes smiled to the crowd as he waved his hand. As he approached the royal box, he pulled a rose from his gauntlet and threw it the new queen. She caught it and the smile immediately disappeared from her face. The color drained her delicate features. Her eyes scanned the edge of the yard and found her husband’s glaring in her direction. He had seen the knight present his favor and her accept it. She quickly handed the rose to a handmaiden and sat down. Head forward, back straight, the very picture of an elegant lady.

I'll like to ask... do you have a ranking for bangtan *ejem* derrieres? I know that jimin's is first, but(t) i've been seeing some Suga photos and i... i want your opinion

Okay, you know i’m a HUGE fan of ALL Bangtan butts, so please understand that before you read on:

1. Jimin, obviously, the Butt King, the Supreme Ruler of Ass, the Emperor of Junk. He has got one rock hard rear. He blesses every pair of pants he wears. One day he will hulk bust out of his clothes just by flexing his butt.

2. Yoongi, the unexpected Ass Hero. The hero that none of us deserve. Like, you would expect a dude that skinny to be pancake flat. But no? He has got some juicy little handfuls?? It almost ain’t right…. I almost don’t believe him….. I feel like I should cup his butt just to be sure…. for Research….  take some slo-mo jiggle footage, measure the butt warmth, poke gently a couple of times to test the give, all very scientific.

3. Hobi, like all you gotta do is watch him do those girl group dances in pleather pants on weekly idol and you will understand. Oh will you understand. He’s real proud of it too. It’s nice and lean but still round, overall very nice.

4/5. Jin and Tae are tied just because I don’t recall seeing all that much of Jin’s ass, seems like he wears a lot of long shirts, but I feel like it’s got to be excellent? He’s very soft and well-structured so I just have to trust him on that? Tae’s I HAVE seen a bit of and it’s great, like definitely better than your average ass, REALLY good ass, just doesn’t have quite as much curve as the first three. Still 10/10 would cup gently and treasure.

6/7. Nams and Kook. But LOOK. They both have fucking STELLAR legs, like probably rank 1 and 2 for legs, and God does not give evenly with both hands, they can’t have both. It would not be fair. To be clear, would STILL cup their butts and would LOVE every second of it. Excellent little rears.

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place like somehow you just don’t belong and no one understands you?
Do you ever wanna run away?
Do you lock yourself in your room with the radio on turned up so loud that no one hears you’re screaming?
No, you don’t know what it’s like When nothing feels all right
You don’t know what it’s like To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you’re down
To feel like you’ve been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one’s there to save you
No, you don’t know what it’s like
Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more
Before your life is over?
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you’re bleeding

No, you don’t know what it’s like
When nothing feels all right
You don’t know what it’s like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you’re down
To feel like you’ve been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one’s there to save you
No you don’t know what it’s like
Welcome to my life

No one ever lied straight to your face
And no one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I’m happy but I’m not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
You never had to work it was always there
You don’t know what it’s like, what it’s like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you’re down
To feel like you’ve been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one’s there to save you
No, you don’t know what it’s like (What it’s like)

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you’re down
To feel like you’ve been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one’s there to save you
No, you don’t know what it’s like.

You had heard of the famous Ragnar Lothbrok being right here in Wessex, but your father had not allowed you to even see the great Viking warrior. It had certainly put a disappointing spin on your mood. However, you had heard from the servant’s gossip that a young man had also been captured with Ragnar. His son, a cripple, had been locked away just as Ragnar had. This information had your mind spinning - you wanted to visit him, talk to him, learn about his world, but yet here you were, stuck at the dining table with your family.

“Y/N.” Your head shot up as you exited your daydream. “You are awfully quiet tonight. Any particular reason?” You mother, Princess Judith asked curiously.

“Oh, no mother. Just tired that is all.” You replied hastily, placing a piece of duck in your mouth.

“It seems the arrival of the pagan has placed stress on all of us. It is still unclear what he is even doing here, alone and with no army.” Your father chimed in, his voice stern and filled with disgust at the thought of Ragnar and his people.

“He’s not alone father. His son is here too.” Your brother Alfred pointed out.

“Who? The cripple? It’s not as if he is going to lead an army in through the gates. He is no threat to us.”

You couldn’t help yourself. Your curiosity was too much to contain and so you quietly slipped out of your chambers and headed to the dungeon cells. When you were outside of the cell you pulled out the keys you had swiped earlier and hesitated. This was such a bad thing to do. If anyone found out, especially your father, who knew what would happen to you. It was too late to back out now though and you slipped the key into the door. There was a creak as you pushed open the door and you stayed close to the wall as you slipped inside. Your eyes widened at the sight of a boy, around your age, leaning up against the wall looking at you in alarm. For a moment you both stared at each other wide eyed and frightened before he went to speak. You instantly shushed him with a finger over your mouth and slowly advanced towards him. His eyes followed you with every step you took and you stopped in front of him, eyes darting to the ground silently asking permission to sit with him. A small nod followed and you sat up against the wall next to him.

“Hi.” You whispered, suddenly consciously aware that he might not understand your language. You were surprised when he replied softly.

“Hello.” There was an awkward pause where you didn’t know what to say, but he was quick to speak. “What are you doing here? Who are you?” Ivar was aware that you were obviously part of a powerful family, probably the royal one considering how fine your white nightgown was, and the smoothness of your skin. You looked like you hadn’t worked a day in your life and to be fair, you hadn’t.

“My name is Y/N. King Ecbert is my grandfather.” This was what Ivar had assumed - that or that you were married to one of Aethulwulf’s sons.

“Why are you here?” He repeated, this time in a more curious tone. Your eyes darted to his.

“I wanted to see you for myself. I was told Ragnar had a son.” You replied. He scoffed and looked away.

“Ah, so you wanted to see a cripple up close. Delightful.”

“No no. I wanted to see a viking. I’ve never seen one. My father won’t let me see your father so I came to you instead.”

“So I am your second choice.” He retorted, leaving your flustered looking for an answer. “Never mind. I need someone to talk to anyway. It is dull down here.”

You smiled to yourself before looking at him once more. “Tell me about your lands. What is it like in the North? I have heard many tales, tell me more.” You begged eagerly. A small chuckle left his mouth and you missed how Ivar’s lips curled upwards slightly. He began to talk about his village and his family, about his brothers and how much he despised Sigurd and he was surprised that you listened to him, even after you begun to tire.

Your head had fallen on to his shoulder and eventually to both your surprise your fingers became interlocked with the others, resting in your lap. Ivar turned to look at you as you struggled to stay awake. Your long hair was cascading over your shoulders and down your back, the slivers of moonlight highlighting your figure. Ivar had never seen someone so beautiful in his life and he was wondering if you were a gift from the Gods, or if you were just a cruel trick. He wanted to spend more time with you but he knew that if you were caught in here with him you would be severely punished. So he reluctantly shook you awake and told you it was time to leave. He revelled in the sad look in your eyes as you said goodbye, placing a kiss on his cheek. At least he knew you enjoyed his company as much as he did yours.

“Y/N?”
“Yes Ivar?” You turned around from your position at the door and looked at the viking boy.

“Come back tomorrow?” He questioned, a small flicker of hope in his eyes.

“I promise.” You replied before you slipped out of the cell leaving Ivar to his own thoughts.

You had actually been engaged since you were old enough to read, but you only met your fiancé when you were a while older, old enough to understand that one day, you would be marrying him. When you did meet your fiancé, you came face to face with a dashing young boy with blonde locks and blue eyes- a face you knew as the future king, Thor Odinson.

A Logical Match

Jim/Spock, Bones, the Enterprise crew

Summary: Jim and Spock have to pretend to be married or risk getting banned from the planet they so desperately need help from. Pre-slash Spirk.

A/N: This is the longest one shot I have ever written and I wrote it in under 24 hours and I hope to god that you will like it.

Other than being my longest one shot to date it’s also my 500th fic on this blog, and I’m also posting it in celebration of James Tiberius Kirk’s (future) birthday, so we’ve got several things to celebrate here! Please enjoy and please consider sending me feedback as it’s always appreciated!

Words: 8 329

In retrospect they could’ve gotten out of the situation very easily. One sentence, one explanation, and everything would have been all set and they wouldn’t have been forced to lie. But as Jim had been standing there, his most respected crew members and rather close friends just behind him, his mouth acted quicker than his brain and he’d ended up blurting out “yes” when the king of a very conservative planet had asked if Spock had been his husband.

“We are receiving a special kind of energy from the two of you which can usually be found among married couples who have been together for a long time,” the king had explained after Jim had choked out a “why” after his first misstep.

Jim hadn’t dared correct himself after that. This planet was conservative, but not in the traditional sense that you usually associated with the time before the 1900’s, Earth time of course. They weren’t against same sex couples or interracial or intergalactical couples. Quite the opposite. But the people didn’t like liars or thieves or immorality or even jokes, and if Jim had told them that he wasn’t actually married to Spock there was a big possibility that they would get angry with him because they’d think he’d disrespected them, and if there was something the crew of the Enterprise needed right now it was their help. So rather than confess that he was a single man, Jim had gone along with it, and seeing as Spock was a logical and intelligent being himself he’d followed his lead.

Jim only allowed himself to look at anyone in his crew once they’d been shown to their rooms and left alone to settle in before dinner.

Coincidentally Spock’s eyes were the first ones his met. “Don’t ask me why I said yes.”

Complete

Later, thousands would say they saw it happen. The king, standing on the battlefield, the red-haired girl fighting by his side. Then, in the blink of an eye—or a brief glance away, or the momentary obstruction of the crowd—there is only one: King Hiryuu, the crimson dragon of legend, uniting all of Kouka behind him as he leads his armies to victory.

Hak doesn’t see it, though he’s there in the thick of it. Or rather, protecting his red-haired king, looking to them for direction in the heat of battle, feels so natural that it’s only later, standing by Hiryuu’s side as the king accepts the surrender of the Kai Emperor, that Hak realizes there’s anything to question. Then he freezes.

“Hak,” says Hiryuu, turning back to face him, his melodious voice both familiar and oh, so wrong.

“You’re—”

“I am Yona,” says Hiryuu. “And I am Su-won. Don’t worry,” he says with a smile. “This is how things were always meant to be.”

“The red dragon will return at dawn,” Yun recites. He glances at the sky. It’s high noon now, the bright sun beating down on the dusty road home. Hiryuu rides at the head of the army, his generals following close behind. His dragons should be near him, too—Zeno is right by his side— but the others stay back, a lonely group amongst the triumphant soldiers. “I didn’t know this would happen! Ik-su never said—” Hak doesn’t reply. He remembers what Su-won did to the princess. How can Hiryuu say this was always meant to be?

The dragons, too, are silent. Finally, Shin-ah speaks. “He’s…not Yona,” he says.

“But he’s Hiryuu,” says Kija. “To follow him is the greatest, the only desire of the dragons.” He looks like he’s trying to convince himself.

“This can’t be permanent,” says Yun. “Can it?”

Hiryuu smiles, and speaks to Hak as if they’ve always known each other, and Hak can’t look him in the eye. “Where is Yona?” he growls. “What did you do to her?”

“Hak,” Hiryuu says gently, “I told you. I am Yona. She and Su-won, we were always two halves of a whole.”

“Yona was never incomplete!” Many things had been incomplete. The kiss she left him with the last time they saw each other, the words he never gave her in response. But Yona was always everything she needed to be.

Hiryuu turns his gaze to the heavens. “Do you remember when the two of us looked up at the sky together?” he asks.

“No,” Hak says shortly, and storms away.

“I’m no happier about this than you are,” Ju-doh says.

“You knew it would happen.” The Sky general doesn’t deny it. “When you traded your second sword for a shield, you knew it would happen. Why didn’t you warn her?”

“Warn her?” He scoffs at the idea. “She was the one armed with prophecies and dragons. She was the one who turned up everywhere he went. Don’t try to tell me she didn’t understand their destiny.”

It’s pointless to argue, and Hak doesn’t care to try. “Then why didn’t you try to stop it?”

“He wouldn’t let me,” Ju-doh admits. “All he asked was that I help him make the best use of the time he had.”

These days, Ju-doh is no closer to the king than Hak. The dragons are the ones who stay by his side—all the dragons but Jae-ha. “I chose to follow a girl who doesn’t exist anymore,” is the last thing he says before he flies away, as soon as it becomes clear there’s no going back. Hiryuu lets him go with a sad smile on his face. Zeno clings to his king. Shin-ah seems to love him, but flinches whenever the king speaks his name. Kija has become stiff with duty.

The generals accept the return of King Hiryuu gladly, even the ones who were never believers before. Joon-gi pushes even harder for a match with his daughter, who is far more amenable to the idea than she once was. The day before their wedding, Hak leaves for Fuuga. He’s not coming back.

Two years later, Hak is visited by a yellow-haired young man who he almost doesn’t recognize as Zeno. He’s taller, and his hair is shorter, the angles of his face a little sharper. “Hiryuu came back for a reason,” he says. “Zeno thought mister might want to know.”

“…oh,” is all Hak can say to that.

“Zeno misses the miss, too,” Zeno admits. “But at least Zeno won’t be missing her for long.” For the tiniest instant, Hak hopes—and then he realizes that Zeno is referring to himself, and not to Yona.

“Zeno, are you—are you going to be alright?”

“Zeno’s going to go visit Ryokuryuu next!” the former yellow dragon replies, without answering Hak’s question.

The king is planning a visit to Fuuga. Hak doesn’t intend to be there, but at the last minute, he can’t bring himself to leave. He’s weak, and he wants, oh how he wants to see that red hair again, those deep violet eyes, Yona’s eyes, even if he’ll never see Yona again. Hak stays back as the royal party arrives in the late morning—they’ve even brought the little princess with them—and there, he’s had his glimpse of Hiryuu, and that’s enough. That’s enough for a lifetime.

“Hak.”

He turns. Standing before him is Yona—older, a grown woman, but without a doubt, Yona. “Princess,” he says. “What—how—?”

“Look at the sky,” says Yona. Hak looks up. What he thought was just a cloud covering the sun is no cloud at all but a much darker shadow. The beginning of an eclipse. “Long, long ago, the red sun was eaten, and the world was dyed black,” Yona recites. “We have until the light returns.”

“How often do solar eclipses happen?” Hak asks her.

“Yun says it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

“Then just tell me one thing. Is this what you want?”

She buries her face in his chest, tears staining his robes. “It’s not,” she says, gripping the stone on his necklace tight. “Hak, I just want my family back, I want you—” She pulls away from him and takes several deep breaths. “But it’s what Kouka needs. I made this choice, Hak.”

Hak pulls her close and wonders what will happen if he doesn’t let go.

When the light returns, she’s still there with him. Hak wonders if he dare hope. They return together to the main house at Fuuga, where Tae-wu greets Yona with confusion—and Lili greets her with open arms. “Yona, isn’t this longer than you expected?” Lili asks.

“It is,” says Yona. “Lili…where is Su-won?” But the other woman doesn’t know.

Two days they wait. Hak would like to never see Su-won again, but Yona is fraught with worry. The little princess doesn’t know what to make of the strange woman who looks so much like her father.

At dawn on the third day, Ju-doh rides to Fuuga. “Su-won isn’t coming back,” he says. “Not to Kouka, not in his lifetime.” He bows to Yona. “Your Majesty,” he says, “Su-won accepted where his path would lead. He never wanted that for you.”

“And you?” Hak asks.

“I’ll join him in exile,” says Ju-doh. “I only came back to deliver this message.”

Yona bows in return. “Thank you, General,” she says. She reaches for Hak’s hand.

“Princess,” Hak begins as they watch the former Sky general ride off into the distance. No, she’s not a princess anymore. “Yona,” he says, “Yona,” he repeats her name, “Yona.” She is Yona and only Yona, and that’s all she ever needs to be.

She looks up at him. “Hak,” she says, smiling. “Let’s go home.”
