A friendly reminder to my gentile friends re: Charlottesville

There are a bunch of posts going around about donating to local Charlottesville charities in the face of the hate march, and I think this is a great idea.

Do you wanna know an even better idea?

Donate in multiples of $18.

Here, I’ll explain!

Hebrew is a numeric language. That is, all of its words have a numeric value. If you’ve ever seen the movie π, by Darren Aronofsky, there’s a great scene with a Chasidic Jew who explains a little about this and shares a word problem that hinges on it. So there are lots of puns and things that don’t translate, because, well, even if English had numeric values, we can’t guarantee they’d be the same, you know?

So, let’s take a second and talk about chai. Not the tea, the Hebrew word: חי. Those of you who followed my conversion may know this is also (part of) my Hebrew name, in its feminine form: חייה. It means “life.” Chai, you can imagine, is a great word! Lots of kids named Chaim (male) or Chaya (female). “L’chaim,” or “to life,” is the traditional Jewish toast. Our most important holiday, Yom Kippur, features a greeting that translates to “may you be inscribed in the Book of Life.” We talk a lot about chai.

And chai, as you may have guessed, has a numeric value of 18.

It’s a very common Jewish practice to give cash gifts in multiples of $18. For Chanukkah last year I donated $36 to my nieces’ Hebrew school, $18 for each of them, without even a moment’s thought to sync up “what I can afford” with “what’s appropriate and meaningful.” My temple does their donation forms in multiples of $18, with a couple of nominally-normal numbers like $50. It’s one of those cool little cultural things. And I promise you, if Charlottesville gets flooded with $18 donations, the white supremacists and Nazis setting up camp there will notice, and they will know what it means.

Fight the 1488 with the 18.

Fight hate with life.

(Non-Jews, feel free to reblog and share this to other platforms. In fact I genuinely and unironically hope you do, because I’d love to see this take off among gentile donators who want a great, nonviolent way to offer a one-two punch.)

I had a dream the other day where I was standing on this platform in a void and a giant sphinx was in front of me about to ask me a riddle and if I answered wrong it would kill me

it asks “what is a human?”

and in my dream my first thought was to that card with “what is a dad” on the front and then “you. you is a dad” inside

so I answer “me. me is a human”

and the sphinx fucking smacked me off the platform

*Something anti black happens in Kpop*

Black fans rightfully voice their concerns

non blacks: they didn’t do anything wrong uwu, leave our faves alone

random ass black fan: actually i’m black and this doesn’t bother me

non blacks: see, this 1 black fan isn’t bothered so this proves our fave did nothing wrong

I love how a film that’s about a closeted boy manages to get over 8 million views in two days, was trending number 1 on YouTube and other social media platforms, won multiple awards, and has gotten viewers and critics BEGGING for a feature film, yet homophobes still have the AUDACITY to say “Nobody wants to watch queer romance.”

The First LGBTQ Networking App Designed To Find Platonic Friendships Is Here

“We are different, and it’s about time we love and embrace that.”

By James Michael Nichols

GayBFF uses a similar framework of apps like Tindr or Grindr to allow queer people and those that love them to meet one another without worrying about expectations related to romance or sex. Ruben Jauregui, Jr. decided to create the platform after witnessing a lack of other social media apps providing the opportunity for LGBTQ people to find friends.

”While we in the LGBTQ Community celebrate the progress on legal and social acceptance, the rates of depression, loneliness and substance abuse remain stagnant,” Jauregui, Jr. told The Huffington Post. “It is still dangerously alienating to go through life as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. I want GayBFF to be a community that will help us bond and grow with each other and our straight allies.”

GayBFF allows users to swipe either left or right on personal profiles to see if they “match” with other users who then have the potential to become friends. Jauregui, Jr. went on to tell HuffPost that the current American political climate make apps like this more crucial than ever ― especially for young LGBTQ people seeking outlets to form community.

“We keep waiting for the moment when we feel like we are not different from other people,” Jauregui, Jr. said. “The fact is, we are different, and it’s about time we love and embrace that.”

Over the course of the books, characters display a variety of reactions to hearing Harry’s name. Even Ron and Hermione are a little awkward at first.

But Molly Weasley’s reaction is very different from any of the other reactions we see, and hints at the role she’ll play in Harry’s life in later books

If you recall, Fred tells Mrs. Weasley that the black-haired boy they had met on the other side of the platform was Harry Potter. At this point, Harry is on the train, so Mrs. Weasley has no idea Harry can hear her through the compartment window.

But instead of the awe, dislike, or curiosity expressed by other characters, Mrs. Weasley’s first reaction is sympathy and concern.

She refers to him as “poor dear” and “poor boy,” and tells Ginny that Harry “isn’t something you goggle at in a zoo.”

When Fred wonders whether Harry remembers what You-Know-Who looks like, Mrs. Weasley becomes “extremely stern” and forbids Fred from asking Harry about You-Know-Who, saying that Harry doesn’t need to be reminded of something like that on his first day of school.

While the rest of the wizarding world views Harry as the almost mythical boy-who-lived, Mrs. Weasley has always seen Harry as an orphan in need of homemade fudge, hand-knitted jumpers, and a loving family.

⚡️ Carmilla Movie Update⚡️

What is happening with the Carmilla Movie?  (EVERYTHING!)

When is it shooting? Is the script finalized? When exactly will it be released on VHX? Will it be on other platforms as well? When can we expect the behind the scenes to begin? Is production financing still ongoing? Have you sold the movie?  What are you allowed to tell us?

These are all great questions! We appreciate the patience and know we’re working hard as hell behind the scenes to pull all the pieces together and get shooting as soon as we can.

We got GREAT news last week - we were successful in our funding application and now have the green light to go to camera in a couple weeks. Woo!

We prefer divulging production details when we’re 100% sure they’re finalized,  and we’d hate to tell you we’re shooting X day to X day only for that to change afterwards. That said, below is a general update of all the behind the scenes shenanigans, and we’ll update you as much as we can as we enter official pre-production next week and principal photography soon after.

We couldn’t have done it without your enthusiasm in the pre-sales and add-ons going towards the film. Your generosity and drive is making this movie happen and we can’t wait to bring it to you!

  • Writing began in January, and we’re now into the fifth draft of the feature. It goes to actors this week, as we move towards production drafts and revision pages incorporating their feedback like we did in Season 3.
  • We’ve scouted a dozen locations with many more to check out. More than a single setting?! What is this sorcery?!  We actually found a pitch perfect one last week. Cross your fingers it works out. Are we going to see Laura & Carmilla’s apartment? Mayhaps…
  • The pre-sales of the movie is set to account for 30% of the total budget. We are just shy of our goal and your continued support helps us more than you know! If you haven’t already pre-ordered the film, we lovingly encourage you to check out the different bundles available!
  • We’ve got a new distribution partner on board in addition to Vimeo’s VHX and we can’t wait to divulge more about what’s happening leading up to the release week!
  • Our projected fall 2017 release on VHX remains the same.
  • Director Spencer Maybee is back on board to give you more of the Carmilla Series flava-flave that we’ve all come to know and love.

Sterek Social Media AU:

Stiles Stilinski, social media nerd extraordinaire, met the man of his dreams during a drunken night out with his friends in New York. The catch here - because there’s always a catch in Stiles’ life - is that the morning after the best day in Stiles’ existence (the BEST) the man is gone, leaving no way for Stiles to contact him and only a piece of paper with his name: Derek Hale. Stiles sets on a mad search through his beloved online platforms but comes out of the other side with a bruised heart and no man. He decides, then, to enlist the help of the people he knows he can count on: his followers and friends.

I need to tell you guys about the time I was almost swept off to another dimension on a ghost train or something

Because honestly it was… a really weird experience tbh

So a few years ago a friend and I were in Belfast, and it was getting towards evening time in the winter so it was already pitch black but still kind of crowded from the Christmas rush. We headed to the train station to get a train home and these trains were fairly regular, like about every thirty minutes or so which is pretty regular for that country, trust me. The trains varied from the newer, nicer ones to the ones that probably hadn’t been updated since the seventies, but they were all relatively decent and no cause for concern.

Or so we thought. We caught our train at the usual platform, but no sooner had we got on did we realise something was kind of off. This train was old, and kind of shabby looking. We made a few jokes and sat down anyway, figuring it was one of the older trains that we’d just never seen before, and things passed relatively normally. The train pulled out of the station, and it was only as we were picking up speed that we realised we were the only ones in the carriage. This was highly unusual, because it was still peak time for people starting to head back, and it being so close to Christmas, the train should have been packed. We couldn’t have got on an out of service trains, because they wouldn’t go to a passenger platform if they weren’t taking passengers, and with all the other trains needing platforms there would be no room for them. They would go to a separate part of the tracks out of the way. We were completely stumped.

We put it down to just weird timing and figured the other carriages probably had people in them, and tried to relax. The train was sort of rickety and unusually loud, and it didn’t exactly sound like what you would expect from a train. I don’t know how to describe it, but there was a kind of odd, distorted quality to the sound of the wheels on the track; it was sort of muffled but also louder than usual at the same time? Kind of like when you have a dream and wake up still hearing the sound from it, and it sounds both quiet because it’s fading from your ears but loud at the same time because it’s in your head. That’s really the only way I can describe it.

We quickly noticed something else that was weird. Several minutes passed, and we didn’t stop at the usual stop. We didn’t even go past it. Several more minutes passed and we absolutely should have stopped at at least two stops. There was nothing, and there was no train guard to check tickets, either. By now, we’re really freaked out. We’re passing through places we recognise, proving we’re on the right route, but we’re not going through any of the right stops and the train isn’t slowing. This probably went on for a good six or seven minutes, even though we should have been out of Belfast by that time. Finally, the train started to slow, and pulled into the first station it should have stopped at, only minutes after leaving the original station. By this point we’re so freaked out that we know we’re getting off the train, so we stand and go and wait by the doors.

The train stops, and the platform outside is empty – again, very unusual for this time. The doors thankfully open and me and my friend hurry out onto the platform, and almost immediately after our feet touch the platform, the train pulls away. No one else got off the train, and as it passes, we see there’s absolutely no one else on the train. No passengers, no guards. The driver would have been at the front so we didn’t get to see if anyone was there or not, but the train was completely empty. We watched it go along the track a short distance, and then the lights simply vanished even though there was nothing there to obstruct them. No trains on other tracks, no tunnels, no curves. That part of the track has great visibility, but the lights just vanished into midair.

We look at one another, and then suddenly we realise we can hear noise, and the platform behind us is packed with people. We just jumped on the next train with a crowd of other people and tried not to think too much about what would have happened if we’d stayed on that first train.

I never thought I would really need to write this, but … So, I don’t mind repost on instagram (or other platforms), but please, credit my tumblr, it’s the only thing I’m asking !

other than that, enjoy~

Yayyyy!!

Happy Birthday, Tumblr, you wonderful little website! You let me talk with people who appreciate my silliness better than most other platforms I’m on, and for that, I am incredibly grateful. <3

somebody responded to us posting that emma watson is a clueless activist with this

and i’m just like… yeah because emma watson was born to rich parents and got sent to a freaking private boarding school in oxford and getting tutored in drama from a very young age, and landed a role in a very visible movie franchise .

like… both people who work on this blog are lower middle class at absolute best. if i had a rich mummy and daddy that sent me to rich people school and paid for a better education then maybe i would be a some kind of ambassador that makes speeches that don’t say anything as well, but instead i’m just a local activist who tries to support people in the best way she can with the resources she has.

for what it’s worth i’m from roughly the same geographic area as emma and i’m just like… maybe if i was a rich pretty cis girl i could work for the UN in promoting equality in an ineffective way too, but instead i’m working class, transgender and finding it hard to even get a job as a shitty position in the same city she went to school, all because we both played the cards we got dealt and she happened to have all aces.

jesus. think before you speak, y’know?

HAPPY TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY 2017

In my work as a Church of England curate, I am not visible.
But I hope that here and on other platforms I am able to minister to my full potential, using the genderqueer identity that God gave me to reach out in love to the world.
One day I will come out at work, but for now know that I hold all my followers in my prayers and I’m here for you. I’m you’re curate too xxx
