“Dinner was great babe.” Dean complemented his girlfriend as he helped her finish off the dishes. They’d had a late dinner date after Maddie had gone to bed.
Clara smirked at him, “You’re just saying that because I made pie.”
Dean wrapped his arms around his girlfriend from behind, “Well, that, but everything was amazing! You’re a wonderful cook.”
Clara leaned back into his embrace, closing her eyes and enjoying the feeling of his arms around her. It still felt serial that she was here with Dean. Dean was a dream; he was better than she ever could have hoped for. He was kind, loving, protective, thoughtful and funny. Most importantly though he was great with Maddie. He was patient and loving with her. Dean played all her crazy games and genuinely seemed to care about her like he did Clara. Dean was almost too good to be true.
Dean kissed Clara and stepped away, hanging up his tea towel, “Well I should get going. It’s getting late.”
Clara wrapped her arms back around his waist, pulling him closer to her, “Just spend the night here. Like you said, it’s late and you don’t have a case right now so it doesn’t matter if you don’t make it back till the morning.”
Dean looked her uncertainly. He would love to spend the night here with Clara, but he didn’t know what how happen with Maddie in the morning. “Are you sure? What about Maddie? What’s she going to think if I’m here in the morning?”
“We’ll tell her you had a sleepover. She adores you; you’re definitely no stranger. I think she’ll be fine with it. She’s ready. Why don’t you call Sam and tell him you won’t be home tonight and I’ll meet you upstairs.” Clara winked at him and headed toward her room. Dean quickly called his brother and headed upstairs to Clara’s room.
Dean laid out on the bed and Clara curled into his side, resting her head on his chest. Dean relaxed into the bed, still not completing believing that this was happening to him. He was lying next to the most amazing women and even better he was going to get to wake up next to her. Dean couldn’t imagine anything better.
Clara leaned up and kissed him softly, “Goodnight babe”
The two were almost asleep when the door creaked open an inch, “Mommy?”
Clara barely had the chance to open her eyes and register that her daughter was standing in the doorway before Dean was sitting up in bed, a concerned look on his face. “Maddie, what’s wrong?”
Maddie sniffled and took a step further into the room, “Dean?”
“Yeah, it’s me. What’s wrong? Why are you up”
“I had a bad dream; there was a mean monster in my closet. It was gonna get Mommy and me. Can I sleep in here with you guys?”
Clara looked over at Dean nervously. While it wasn’t a big deal for her to let Maddie sleep with her when she had a nightmare, Clara wasn’t sure what Dean would think. Would he be comfortable with it?
Dean shifted toward the edge of the bed, and extended his arms to the little girl. “Of course, sweetie.” Maddie ran and leaped into Dean’s arms. He lifted her up onto the bed, placing her between himself and Clara. He helped her get settled before laying back himself. “Maddie, you don’t have to worry about monsters. They aren’t real and there isn’t one in your closet. I would never let anything ever hurt you or your mother, okay?”
Maddie nodded her head, already feeling better now that she had Dean to protect her. Maddie didn’t realize the complete truth of Dean’s words, but Clara did. While her five-year-old didn’t know what Dean did, Clara was aware and she believed Dean when he said he’d never let anything hurt them.
“Thanks Dean.” Maddie sleepily replied. She was already starting to doze off, nestled between the two adults.
“Goodnight love.” Dean placed a sweet kiss to her forehead before leaning over and giving her mother one as well. As Dean laid there next to the two most important women in his life, and he realized this was going to be the best thing to wake up to in the morning.
