[Detroit, Tomorrow] by clay stephens
Clay Stephens is the man that got me into DJing. We met very randomly at various parties in NY and bonded over our mutual appreciation of music.
I was never into the idea of DJing, but he convinced me I had to. After a slightly disastrous first outing where I insisted he DJ with me (because I didn’t really know what I was doing), we went on to DJ every Sunday at Wreck Room for over a year. I continued at Wreck Room, but he moved to Berlin, living blocks away from the techno Mecca, Berghain.
He’s been New Orleans for about two years now, soaking up the local music scene. He introduced me to Jordan Gekko, a New Orleans local, up-and-coming techno head whose mix I recently posted.
Clay is an amazing selector, here displaying a bit of his knowledge of techno. But he has deep, deep knowledge of all kinds of metal, shoegaze, house, etc. When I play him a good track, he gets this distant look, the hairs stand up on the back of his neck, and I can see him switch to a deep listening mode. More than listening, he absorbs that track and makes it a part of him, releasing it in mixes of true deepness such as this.
