The books aren't bad. People who only like the tv show aren't real fans. Same with pretty little liars. Your fav Magnus wouldn't exist without Cassandra Clare. So bye.

its ok to have different opinions anon. If you want to have a mature argument abt this please come off anon and message me but heres my perspective;

I personally believe that C*ssandra Cl*re did a terrible job portraying/treating her lgbt characters and characters of color, she frequently used incest & abuse tropes and romanticized it, therefore the books are not only really uncomfortable to read but also pretty disgusting for me.

To answer the “magnus wouldnt exist without Clam Chowder lol” part, this argument is almost irrelevant if you ask me. If you look at it like that, Clary wouldnt exist without Valentine. Is Valentine human scum? Yes. Is Clary a good person with good intentions? Yes. Bad things can open doors for good things, therefore the statement “ur favs wouldnt be real if it werent for Christmas Cookie” is true, but doesnt excuse anything.

thank u for your time, have a nice day buddy!

Cursed Child was dumb and here are some reasons why

(warning: spoilers. this probably won’t make sense unless you’ve read the script. far be it from me to recommend this kneazle-vomit of a play, though, so if you haven’t read it, good)

  • the plot is messy, strange, and childish. there’s only one time-turner left!! how will the characters cope when said time-turner is lost? oh lol they’ll just use this other convenient time-turner. for convenient plot points, see also: harry can suddenly speak parseltongue again, because well he just kind of needs to be able to do that
  • Harry cursing “oh dumbledore” without a hint of irony. like really? really
  • the characterisation was a pile of dragon dung and we all freaking know it. let’s break it down into individual characters here because fuck if I can stop at one bullet point for this
  • Hermione: the brightest witch of her age, the constant crusader for the unloved and the unrepresented, whose successful career and capacity for kindness apparently rest in the hands of her romance with Ron Weasley. oh… but wait. it sounds a little familiar, this story. hear me out. let’s see now, a highly intelligent person who falls in love but doesn’t have that love reciprocated, and who then becomes a really fucking mean teacher at Hogwarts through bitterness. sound like anyone we know? fam, they tried to parallel Hermione and Snape. Hermione and Snape. this being the same Snape who sneered in Hermione’s face when she’d been visibly hexed, and made her cry; the same Snape who bullied Neville Longbottom for years, while Hermione muttered instructions under her breath to help him. if you want to tell me that Hermione would ever allow herself to become a Snape parallel then I will kindly invite you to shove a dirigible plum where there’s no lumos solem
  • Harry: when Harry was at his angriest in OOTP, and he’s yelling at Ron and Hermione, there’s one thing we notice. everything he yells is true. he means it. he’s bitter about it and he’s loud and furious, but he doesn’t have the kind of anger that just says anything to cause hurt, that speaks without thinking, not even at this crisis point in his life. are you really going to tell me that the boy who knows down to his bones what it’s like to feel rejected, and misunderstood, and alone, would ever say - even in anger - that he wishes Albus wasn’t his son? I am going to snap wands over this
  • Cedric. and this one burns. because Cedric was brave and he was true, and he had a sense of justice that led him to telling Harry about the way the golden egg worked, and led him to sharing the winning of the triwizard tournament with Harry. he died, he was murdered at the age of seventeen, embodying a sense of justice so strong, an innocence, a goodness. Cedric Diggory - the boy who believed in fairness with an integrity that is astounding - becoming party to the indiscriminate killing and casual torture of the Death Eaters just because he had his head engorged one time… is about as likely as Hagrid stomping on a dragon egg. it’s an insult to who he was and I am going to engorge the entire bodies of the writers of this fucking play so that hopefully they’ll just float away too, with all the grace and likeability of Aunt Marge
  • Voldemort: can we all agree now that Voldemort would not father a child. the idea of him experiencing lust seems out of character; the idea of him giving into a base urge seems more so. it’s too human, too vulgar, too physical; it would associate him with the common and the mainstream in a way that I contend he would find repulsive. Tom Riddle Sr. was trapped by Merope into sex and romance; to have sex would be to bring himself closer to his parents, down to the level of a Muggle and a witch who lacked power and craved love, two things Voldemort could never, ever stand. no. he wouldn’t have sex just because he wanted to; he’d be repelled by the idea. what other reason could there be for him to do the nasty with Bellatrix? to ensure the continuation of his line? that makes even less sense. achieving immortality for Voldemort was always a question of magic, a personal quest. he wouldn’t go for a messy, physical back-up plan. he always thought that he would win. if anything, he would see a child as a future threat, not a security. another being in the world with the promise of his power? he wouldn’t risk it.
  • what the fuck was that trolley witch scene though
  • “for voldemort and valour” are you serious. is there a Gryffindor spy in the Voldemort camp laughing their ass off because they actually managed to get that one through. and are they ten years old
  • overall, the message of the play infuriated me. Delphi was the child of Voldemort, so she was evil. Albus was the child of Harry, so he was good. Scorpius was the son of Draco, so he should have been evil, but Draco’s actually kind of good now and his mother was nice, so he can be good too. where is the complexity? was five hours of drama not enough to find some shades of morality? where is the hope, where is the resonance, in a story that says that good begets good and evil begets evil, and nothing can really change? the Harry Potter book series was about a boy who grew up with something inside him that was utterly evil, and who rejected it, fought against it, changed the path that fate seemed to wish him to walk. not slytherin, not slytherin. we had Regulus Black and Sirius Black, who rejected their pasts, whose heritage and whose House stood for nothing against their principles, their eventual and separate forms of bravery. we had Remus Lupin, who transformed into a monster but never became one, not even after years of rejection and pain. we had the word mudblood, and we watched Hermione fight it, we knew it was ridiculous to label someone based on their blood. and now… we have the Cursed Child. a play which is flat, and stupid, and tells us that your parentage inevitably dictates your character - and that how you’re treated is how you’ll treat others. dear writers, in the words of Albus Dumbledore, you fail to recognise that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be. you fucks.

I’ve seen SO many of my friends struggle with motivation these days, so I wanted to make a little psa about how to attempt to get motivation back ( this also helps fight depression yo ) — It’s all about POSITIVE VIBES. Positivity attracts positivity. Motivation is driven by the WANT to do something, and that doesn’t ( usually ) come on its own, but needs a kick-starter ( this is where inspiration comes into play ). Inspiration is easily triggered by positivity, and everyone has positivity stored in them ( it is a human thing after all ), so what’s needed is to extract it. This part is where people say that their depression prevents them, and a big reason for that is because they are waiting for the positivity to come to them, but relying on something to come to YOU is not as good as generating it YOURSELF. So, can positivity be generated when you feel down? By: DOING YOUR BEST. This is a cliche saying, but it actually works. Do one more thing than you did yesterday. For some, this is a slow process. Doing one more draft, answering one more ask - but the thing is, the more you do, the better you will feel about yourself. And, there it is: you have made a positiv feeling/vibe/emotion. By feeling good about yourself, and sending out this ‘ positive vibe ‘, you are attracting inspiration, which will turn into motivation. Then, it’ll be easier to do more things, which, again, will give you an even better feeling - more motivation - more productivity - more positive vibes! When you hit a certain point, you will have “excess” positivity, which you can give to the people around you! So now you’re not only making positiv energy, but you’re also distributing it to your social circle, which will make good things happen to you. You’ll feel better about yourself, your work, and the people in your life ( and they will feel better about you ). And all of this JUST because you decided that you wanted to do a little more than usual. People who say that “this won’t work for me”, are ruining for themselves, because that means that instead of generating positivity, you are making negativity, which brings NOTHING good. Don’t say: “this won’t work for me”, don’t say “this might work for me”. Say: “THIS WORKS FOR ME”, because — Well, it does.

Small personal note about my own experience with this ‘ method ‘ of generating motivation ( feel free to ignore this) ; People tell me that I can’t understand what it’s like to be depressed and that it’s impossible to just “do” things when you’re feeling down, but, trust me, I DO know what that’s like. I suffer from a rare medical condition that causes me a lot of pain, which I have been very depressed about ( still feel down sometimes about it ), but I can STILL use the method described above to make motivation! So, I have no doubt that it will work for you too!

Hey! So I was wondering if you had any recommendations for some fics centered around Weasley/Harry stuff. Like, fluffy and warm family-focused stuff. Preferably before next-gen stuff, like during the book timeline maybe? idk I just love those about Harry being accepted and treated like just another Weasley brother it's so sweet and it makes me happy x) Unfortunately I don't really know how to look for them. I mostly just stumble across it. (Some Hinny incorporated in there would be a bonus xD)

ALSO, just any fic with some lovely brotherly interactions between Harry/any of the Weasley brothers. uwu

Ok I picked out some of mine that I think fit, plus some of my favorites from other authors :) [read them I love them].

I don’t tend to read many fics that happen during the books, so these are all post books but mostly pre next gen.  If anyone has some during the books favorites tell me and I’ll share!

Also, check my tag for the Weasleys

Please share favorites if you have them!

  • doesn’t really speak all that often, but is really polite. as in, to older tenants he always bows respectfully, to people his age he always smiles and nods, and to the kids he’s just super sweet bending down to ruffle their hair and laugh at whatever they tell him
  • and like he’s really athletic like you never see him use the elevator, he always runs up the stairs even though his apartments on the 10th floor
  • the building you live in also has a park right across the street and if you wake up early enough you can look out of your window and see mark working out, doing pull ups on the monkey bars and whatnot
  • (sometimes in the summer he does this shirtless and let’s just say you’re not the only person looking out of their window completely mesmerized LOL)
  • has a cross on his door along with a little sticker of the taiwanese flag which were all sent to him in his first care package from his parents when he moved in alone
  • he’s really casual, you can see that in the way he dresses mainly in basketball shorts and hoodies, but his apartment is just the same. as in he’s got like no actual decorations in his apartment just work out equipment, his computer, and his bed,,,,
  • like he’s got photos of his family hung  up on the refrigerator but like ,,,, a proper table? nope. a wardrobe? don’t need it. a mirror? the bathroom has one don’t need another one LOL
  • and there’s another thing about mark,,,,he really ,,,,doesn’t know how to do laundry properly
  • and you’ve noticed this because you guys both do laundry really late and you’ve bumped into him a few times and every damn time you see him putting his lights and darks together and forgetting to change the waters temperature
  • and one day you see him standing there, looking down at a pair of jeans and you’re like “they shrunk didn’t they?” and he turns around to look at you and he’s like “how did you know?” and you’re like “because,,,,,you always put your jeans in hot water,,,,,you shouldn’t do that,,,,”
  • and marks like what you can change the temperature of the water?? and you’re like boy,,,,,,so you go over and carefully explain what all buttons on the machine are actually used for and mark sheepishly confesses that he thought everything was just good in its default setting and you’re like unfortunately,,,,no
  • and you start putting your own clothes in and mark goes over to the dryer and once again begins to just dump everything in there
  • and you hurry over like “no for this you also need to sort everything out-”
  • and before you know it you’re back to explaining
  • and mark listens, nodding along but then you make the mistake of looking up at him while you’re talking and he’s got his lips parted, tongue peeking out because he’s really concentrated on what you’re saying
  • and he looks,,,,,,so good and if you shift your eyes just a bit you’ll notice that the shirt he’s wearing is pretty loose and you know there’s his chest-
  • and you’re like “hand dry- dry - dry - dry,,,,” you basically stutter and have to catch yourself
  • and mark meets your eyes and sees your cheeks are red and he doesn’t even have to know why he just stands up straight and gives you a grin like “should i zip up my jacket, is it that distracting?”
  • and you’re like ASFDHJLDA what nOO,,,um,,,,,,as- as i was saying-
  • and mark laughs and you’re like oh god im so embarrassed
  • but he’s like not laughing /at/ you he’s just like he thinks you’re really cute getting sidetracked by him
  • and he’s like “keep going, im listening” and when you’re done you’re like,,,,im gonna go,,,,hurry over and do my own laundry and maybeneverlookyouintheeyesagain
  • but before you do mark is like “let me thank you-”
  • and you’re like there’s no need, really but then he does something that makes you hide your face he lifts the hem of his jacket and shirt just a bit to flash his stomach and you’re like WHAT,,,,,and he bursts into laughter again
  • before apologizing and he’s like “sorry, sorry teasing you is just really fun - you look cute, but i mean it let me thank you by taking you to dinner sometime?”
  • and you’re like ,,,,,,,o,,,,,,ok,,,,,but seriously mark tuan keep your shirt on from now on
  • and marks like lmaooo ok but are you sure you don’t want another peek- and you’re like do nOT make me throw this detergent bottle at you

  • has the prettiest pet cat that always sits by the window and waits for jb to come home
  • and sometimes you see it when you pass by and she’s so pretty,,,with bright blue eyes and you wave but then get embarrassed because PLEASE she’s a cat she can’t wave back
  • jb’s an avid reader but he keeps all his books in stacks on the floor of his living room and bedroom and he doesn’t have a proper bed, just a lay out futon
  • and his kitchen, the places where you should be storing like plates and what not - full of books,,,,,like he eats out at the restaurants near the building and sometimes just lives off triangle kimbap for a week
  • he doesn’t really decorate but he does sometimes tear out a photo from a magazine of a pretty place like the forest or the amazon and puts it up because he likes nature
  • the problem is when youngjae gifted him a plant ,,,,he over-watered it and it died
  • now jb can’t live with the regret of hurting another plant so he just puts up photos LOL
  • and you know him on like a casual basis ,, like you both are the youngest people on your floor and also like you guys sometimes see each other at the local take-out places so it’s like on a hi/how are you/bye basis
  • but you,,,,,,really like jb
  • if not for the fact that he has a cat LOL but also like you like his personality because although on the surface he sometimes seems so stoic you’ve seen his warm smile, the one that comes out when he feeds stray animals or  is really immersed in a book
  • and you’ve seen him walk into trees and poles because he can’t pick his nose up from his book
  • and you’re like how can someone so undeniably, inhumanly handsome ,,,,,,be such a goofy person,,,,,,
  • but also whenever your eyes meet jb’s, even when you just say good morning to each other in passing, your heart speeds up and you just can’t,,,,,,you can’t do anything but look away in embarrassment
  • until you find yourself walking home in horrible rain, muttering that the wind is so strong and that your bags going to get wet but you stop because in front of you is jb,,,,
  • jb on his knees in the middle of the street, hastily shoving things into his bag and under his arm and you step closer to see that someones abandoned a crate of old books outside of their doorstep
  • and jb is desperately trying to get them all out before the rain soaks them through
  • but he’s also wearing nothing but a long sleeved t-shirt so his back is drenched in rain and with this wind,,,,you’re worried he’ll catch a cold
  • so you come closer, leaning the umbrella you’re holding over jb so it covers him too and he notices, looking up in surprise and you meet his eyes and !!!! you apologize for coming over you just didn’t want him to get anymore wet
  • and just shakes his head and tells you that you should hurry home because the rain is getting worse
  • but you stand there and wait as jb tries to get all the books and you use your free hand to put some in your own bag to help
  • and you don’t see but the corner of jb’s lips pull up into a small smile and once he has gathered all the books he’s like “let’s run so we get home quickly”
  • and you try to keep the umbrella up high but sometimes it knocks jb’s temple, but he doesn’t complain, he’s so thankful for you but you keep squeaking out apologizes like oh my god,,,, and he’s like no no it’s nothing
  • and once you’re indoors, jb shuffling around for his key he asks if you’d want to come in maybe,,,,,since you also are carrying some of the books
  • and when you do you’re a bit shocked by how many books there really are and you’re just like ,,,,giggling because there’s empty coffee mugs balancing on books and there’s cat toys everywhere and uneven photos of flowers on the wall and like
  • you look at jb, whose trying to tidy up and stutters that he has no tea is water ok?? and you’re like “i won’t stay lon-”
  • but then the cat comes out and curiously weaves its way between your legs - meowing and jb’s like “you can pet her, she’s asking you to”
  • and you lean down, hand trembling a bit but the cat just nudges your palm with her head and your heart is EXPLODING because she’s so CUTE AND SOFT and
  • jb is like laughing all of a sudden and you look over like ??? and he’s like “not to be rude, but you’re literally glowing - i didn’t know you liked cats so much” and you’re like “i like your cat so much, she’s so gorgeous”
  • and jb blushes like you just complimented him and not the cat but it’s cute he’s like “,,,,,yeah she is,,,,,pretty,,,,,”
  • and you sit down, the cat making a comfortable home in your lap and jb comes over to pass you a mug with water and you’re like “i don’t want to overstay, but she’s,,,,she’s asleep,,,,,,i don’t want to get up-” and jb is like “it’s fine no you can stay!” and he leans over to drag over the books he brought
  • and you notice how he’s still wearing his wet shirt and you’re like “um,,”
  • but then he looks at you and you freeze again because his eyes are such a deep brown, so clear that the light makes them look almost like stars, and your words get caught in your throat
  • and he’s like ?? and you’re like “s-s-s-shirt your- shirt is,,,,,wet,,,,,,,cold,,,,,,you’ll catch one,,,” and jb reddens a bit and he’s like oh let me go change,,,,
  • and you guys are both blushing now and you distract yourself by picking up a random book until jb comes back in another shirt and it’s like
  • you two are so awkward, but somehow like there’s something really cute and jb mentions that his cat doesn’t grow fond of people so quickly but with you it’s different
  • and when she finally wakes up, skipping out of your lap and walking over to find food you say your goodbyes but jb is like one sec
  • and he comes back with your umbrella and he’s like you almost forgot it here and you’re like “you should keep it!! you don’t have one do you” and he’s like howd you know 0: and you’re like “you don’t have much in your apartment,,,keep it,,,,”
  • and jb hesitates but smiles and thanks you but right as you leave through the door he goes
  • “come back soon, i think my cat will miss you.” (he’ll miss you too)
upcoming Art Book

OK.. I’m just gonna come out and tell ya guys as soon as I can, but I am officially gonna leave the Inuyasha fandom once I’m out of school and my summer break starts. (Which is in May I believe)

But don’t fright cause I’ll still be here and draw and if you guys ever want me to draw Inuyasha stuff for commissions or art trades I’ll do it, but for now– I’m ready to move on. I love this fandom and this series- so don’t be hurt or think I’m just leaving you (even though that’s what it seems) but I want to do other things now. I want to work on my original stories; which take a lottttttttt of research and time, and then there are other fanart pieces I want to try out and experience with. It’ll help me practice to do different things, maybe get me places to sell them like Expos or Cons or even help my portfolio too.

So its not that’s leaving you guys, I’m just moving on to do different pieces besides jut Inuyasha

So, since I’m leaving, I’ve been thinking of leaving like a ‘farewell’ present to you guys and thought about maybe doing a dounouji- but I thought it’ll be even better if its an Art book!~~~

Where I’ll have all kinds of drawings of mine in it, including comics (both fluffy and dirty), coloring pages, maybe some stickers and bookmarks that you can cute out and use.

I’m thinking about the cost to be around $40-$60 because its gonna be pretty big with lots of drawings and like I said before– lots of shit is gonna be in it 0-0

***ANDDDDDD If you pay extra $5 you get a free prize with it***

But yeah, I’ve been trying to work on that so you guys have like a little reminder of me and all kinds of Inuyasha stuff from me^^ If you guys are interested, feel free to tel me and If I get enough votes on this I’ll be sure to put it to work. And hopefully by the end of my summer break or during it I’ll be done with it

So yep, THANKS GUYS!! I’ll keep ya posted and page previews for it once its official^^

Hey! I'm a cisgendered straight woman who wants to tell the stories of LGBTQ+ people through my writing (anything from fluffy love stories to serious representations of discrimination). I'm worried that me writing this would be offensive to people in the LGBTQ+ community, and the last thing I would want to do is to overstep my boundaries. You're an author that I really respect and whose writing I really love, so I value your opinion on this: is it ok for someone like myself to write this? <3

Hi! Its interesting, we were just talking about this yesterday! I received some great input from a number of different writers on tumblr :) I’m going to do this in bullet points as a I try to get my thoughts in order.

I think it’s absolutely okay for you to write about LGBT+ characters, but you have to handle them well.

  1. Research, research, research. Read books by LGBTQIA+ authors ( check out @lgbtqreads) and go find people who don’t mind talking about their experiences.
  2. Understand that you’re going to make mistakes. Be okay with that, be open to listening, and be open to accepting criticism. And then use the comments to be better.
  3. Understand that not everyone will agree it’s okay. Not everyone is going to look at you and think it’s okay for you to be writing LGBT characters. There are voices in the community and it’s true that as a cisgendered, straight woman you’re more likely to be heard than they are. You can understand that and still write, but I feel it’s important to acknowledge that you do have privilege here.
  4. Avoid the hell out of tropes. Lesbian couple finally gets together and then one of them dies for Tragedy™. Gay couple somehow miraculously fits into heterosexual gender roles (one has more stereotypical feminine interests while the other has more stereotypical masculine interests.).  I’m not saying that these things don’t happen, but they’re often used to make gayness #acceptable in media.

But you know what? These are just the rules that I have for myself in my own writing. I have a very narrow field of vision because of my own identity. So here’s a bunch of sources you should definitely check out about this issue!

2. thats your personal opinion that its offensive and dangerous, and dont assume you know me and my experiences.
3. how did it “throw it away”? i see more discussion about these issuses now outside of tumblr than i did before
4. its selfish of YOU to come send me an anonymous message telling me to delete my blog that me and many people like, about a show that we connect to that has effected us.

no one is forcing you, and anyone else to watch the show. it is rated TV-MA, so if your young, beware, and if you cant handle any of the issues in the show, pls dont watch it.

Maggie Sawyer is a good cop.

A great cop, really. She can read a suspect, human or not, like she’s reading a Dr. Suess book. Some people find those books hard or confusing but Maggie has always been able to piece together the strange and the unusual and make it make sense. She reads people the same way; everything someone does means something.

“I’m here for sister night,” Maggie teases when Alex opens the door, depositing the bottle of wine in the agent’s hand before inviting herself in since Alex just kind of stands there in slight shock. “I hope cab sav is okay.”

Alex stares down at the fancy bottle of wine and tries to keep her eyes from popping out of her head because this is not the $7.99 bottle of Yellow Tail wine she usually buys. This is the $30 dollar wine she usually glances right over at the liquor store.

“Good,” Maggie beams, clearly proud of herself. “It’s my favorite.“

elizaschuyiers  asked:

ok so i know cc is a problematic author, like a person, but what's problematic abt the books? im curious, cause i've heard they have problems but i don't know what. thanks!

I think the answer depends on who you ask, and I can only speak for myself. The problems with the books – mainly The Mortal Instruments – as I see it are about the unpleasant/tedious/you-name-it character interactions meant to be anything but; poorly constructed plot, its subsidiarity in relation to character-drivenness, and, you know, just bad writing.

But that’s a pretty general statement, really. When it comes to the characters the biggest issue, I think, is how horrible they are to each other. Of course, we are told that some of them are best friends, some of them are family, and some of them fancy each other and all that. This what we are told (oh, the dire case of telling, not showing). However, all this becomes debatable because of what we are shown instead. Words and actions never match in these books.

The most prominent examples of this are probably what people complain about the most – and for a reason. Jace treats basically anyone who isn’t Clary poorly and, in Alec’s case, even humiliatingly. Jace is utterly absorbed by his own life and Clary that he fails to consider how his behaviour might affect the one he calls closer than a brother. Humiliating Alec who is already shy about his sexuality and visibly uncomfortable doesn’t count as “caring a lot” or “a good friend.” Oddly enough, Jace and Isabelle never seem to have any problems.

Clary on her own part does what she wants the same way as Jace does, neither never thinking about the consequences of their actions, nor actually facing any consequences of their actions. No one ever confronts them and just accept the fact like it’s alright to be so inconsiderate towards anything ever. I believe Clary’s hatred of other girls is at this point too redundant to go into detail. But it’s there, and it’s utterly purposeless. As protagonists Jace and Clary are inherently right, of course. But because Clare’s incapability to write likeable heroes and heroines, they end up – again, in my opinion – being the least deserving protagonists ever. Neither she nor Jace show any personal growth during the series. They are the same from the beginning to the end.

I have no issues with incest as a theme, per se. For instance, I’m not bothered by A Song of Ice and Fire in the least. It is rather disturbing in Clare’s case because it clearly serves her own preferences and fantasies and expects it to be the same for everyone. It is also used as an annoying and recurring thing that doesn’t end with Jace and Clary, but continues with Clary and Sebastian. It wasn’t really SCANDALIOUS for me when we are told that Jace and Clary are siblings, because I knew the entire time they weren’t. I can’t imagine it for those who did not. I doubt many were AWESOME, HOT, MORE OF THIS. What the hell was she expecting…?

Then there’s Alec and Magnus. Oh, boy. I think there’s more problems with this couple than with any other combined. The problems with them are a massive compilation of many things: being blatantly side-lined and ignored as individual characters and as a couple (by the author), hiding things from each other as far as immaturity goes, and never sitting down and communicating with each other. Magnus is also much older and far more experienced in comparison to Alec. I’m not quite sure if the age gap itself is the issue here, though. I don’t personally find it a huge problem. Alec will grow up and mature but that age difference will always be there very much the same way as with any other immortal/mortal pair. Because of the execution of the story, that age difference does become an issue.

The thing is, Alec is young, never having dated anyone or let himself even like anyone as openly as Magnus has always done. He’s afraid of the rejection by other Shadowhunters and his family and all that basic stuff. Magnus, on the other hand, has loved many during his few hundred years of life and ended up in a point where opening yourself up to someone new is like giving a part of your heart away, and the fear of having his heart broken yet again is a bit of a hindrance in his relationship to Alec. Magnus’ unwillingness to disclose his past and share it with Alec, the fact that Magnus will live and Alec will die, and Alec’s eventual fall into desperation because of all that are the obstacles they need to tackle as a couple aside from their individual troubles.

I think it sounds quite an interesting arc put like that. Yet the execution is absolutely unbearable. Instead of letting Alec grow out of his shell in his own time, he’s pushed out of it. Instead of letting Magnus open up about his past in his own time, Alec is obnoxious about his dating history and later on goes behind his back and does questionable things that include ending Magnus’ immortality. According to Clare, however, Alec went behind Magnus’ back in order to learn more about him despite that this fact about Alec’s intentions was never brought up in the books. No, it was just, no. Again, my brain stops working. None of it is handled maturely or justifyingly, and it rarely helps the already poor situation to completely ignore their relationship in favour of unnecessary protagonist drama. By the looks of it, Clare seems to only care for scoring fan points without doing the actual work.

Then there’s the whole Maia/Jordan disaster, and Simon lacking any spine when he two-times Isabelle and Maia instead of being frank and honest with any one of them. All of these character interactions (to name only a few prominent ones) aren’t deliberate, because they are disregarded as nonissues and never conversed on or apologized for – which is why they are problems in the first place. All this merely exemplifies Clare’s thoughtlessness as an author. Which is actually funny, since she considers that Jace should not apologize to Alec because any apology might come across (in her mind) wrong for the readers (don’t get me started on that one). If she was so careful about what readers might think regarding anything else other than keeping up her own ideal image of Jace, I don’t believe any of what I’ve mentioned would be an issue they are now. The problem is that she doesn’t think. Her lack of awareness towards her own writing is astounding.

Really, when the lack of communication is the only thriving force in your drama, it’s just bad. It’s frustrating, because there isn’t really a reason for not speaking out – other than characters being complete assholes. And does that really make them likable and the book worth reading? The books are not really about demons or shadowhunting either; the main plot is secondary for Clary and Jace’s relationship. Which is sad since it’s sometimes laborious to read these books when a large part of it includes uninteresting characters with uninteresting and ever so redundant relationship drama. Constant contact, yearning, and elaborate prose on feelings outright cheapen their effect: it doesn’t feel like a pay-off anymore. Malec fans are starved because of the lack of scenes between the two, so I can understand why every scene they’ve got feels like winning a lottery.

I reeeally don’t know what I can conclude here other than that there are loads of things in these books that are troublesome and the very reason I made my blog. I hope this endless rambling here answers at least some of your questions! If you’re interested, I think browsing the anti-tags might give a better idea what the fandom consensus is.

So, I've been seeing stuff on your blog about "cambionverse" and I was kinda wonder what that is?? (PS you're beautiful and I love you 💛)

aaah omg ty!! i hope it’s ok to answer this publicly, i love to talk about this cool thing i helped make! (if not, i’ll be happy enough to take it down. <3)

so, @cambionverse is a series of fanfics i have been co-writing with @callowyn fo ralmost 7 years now. it’s, like, TECHNICALLY based in the world of the tv show supernatural, but it’s about the next generation of characters, and so far away from the original show that you really don’t need to have watched it to understand most of the stories. i once told a friend, “if you read the summary of the episodes everyone appeared in first the way they’re listed on our cast page you’re probably golden” and i stand by that, haha. we try to write them so they read like “real” young adult fiction and as a result we wound up filling in a good 80% of the backstory you’d get from watching the show anyway. we’re thinking very seriously about giving it the “50 shades” treatment someday - that is, editing it and taking out the fandom bits so it becomes original fiction - so if someone who hasn’t seen supernatural winds up enjoying them someday that will be a good omen for our success! (if you HAVE watched supernatural or are planning on watching it, season 6 is the most important one.)

as far as the plot goes, you can check our about page for summaries of the individual fics and links to read them on AO3, but the plot for the overall verse centers around 1. jesse turner, a cambion (half-human, half-demon, the literal actual antichrist) who ran away from home at a young age to avoid getting swept up in a war between demons and angels, can’t control his own powers, and is terrified of monster hunters 2. ben braeden, a young and very kind-hearted monster hunter looking for his monster hunting dad (dean, one of the original show’s protagonists), who went missing several years prior, and 3. claire novak, ben’s INCREDIBLY emotionally unavailable monster hunting partner with some supernatural abilities (thanks to her time spent being possessed by an angel as a child), who is looking for said angel to kill him and get revenge for her father’s death (it’s kinda complicated). basically, the verse revolves around them trying to heal or undo the damage done to them when supernatural forces first touched their lives - there is actual plot, but it’s mostly an excuse for character development. it’s a very character-driven story with strong found family themes!

speaking of characters, other cool ones include: an angel hunter whose soul got stolen and his adopted shapeshifting little sib, jesse’s demonic parent who is the queen of hell and also trans, i don’t care what canon says, a gay witch in a coven of other gay witches, and her gay waitress girlfriend who hates everything to do with the world of supernatural but works in a monster hunting bar anyway. we love them all quite a lot!! most of these characters only appeared in canon for a single episode before being thoroughly traumatized and then forgotten about entirely, so they’re almost like OCs. my favorite is jesse because we both have anxiety. we even did a good bit of our own worldbuilding to fill in the show’s plotholes. i don’t want to pat myself on the back too much, but almost everyone who’s read it has said “you know, i really didn’t think i’d like, but actually i LOVE IT?” so to anyone who got all the way to the bottom of this textwall and has had their interest has been piqued: i HIGHLY encourage you to give the blog (again, @cambionverse) a look, haha.

SORRY for rambling on so long, my truest weakness is when people ask me about the verse. :’)

anonymous asked:

tell us more about how you got your first book published/proposed/whatever the first step is??? (also sorry if you've covered this before i tried to google a bit!!!) (also i am a huge fan HIII I LOVE YOUR WORK AND YOUR ATTITUDE)

i’ve definitely talked about it before, but i know my /answers tag is… very full of things… so i don’t mind!

Anyway, my understanding is that typically you would look for a book agent first, pitching them on your concept or making the case for your book idea, then work with them to fine tune, nail down a solid pitch, and then work with them to pitch many publishers and specific editors. you benefit from their professional relationships to make something happen.

in my case, i was doing what i still do, which is share art online (mostly tumblr back then), self-publishing zines and my unsolicited advice weekly planners. an editor at penguin spotted my work, and reached out to me. editors are under pressure to spot writers and artists for books too, so they’re just out there hunting too and you never know. i got an email out of nowhere around january 2013 that was like “hi i’m an editor at penguin books and i think we should meet for coffee” and that was kind of it. i tried very hard not to die.

so we met, talked about ideas, and my first thought was like OMG A POSTCARD BOOK??? (at the time i was making and selling lots of postcards). she helped me focus in, identifying the interactive parts of my planners as a potential book idea, though it’d need to be undated so it would have a longer shelf life. even then it wasn’t a done deal, she had to go back and think about it and other people weighed in, and i mailed her a bunch of zines and other stuff from my shop (which was at the time even weirder). eventually i guess it worked and they offered me a contract! she essentially brought her world of knowledge – concepts that work, positioning that might help it cross over, and an eye for content – that helped me make 1 Page at a Time happen. I had a lot to learn and was also much more up my own ass about “my art” at that time. she reminded me that for most people it’d be the first they heard of me, that it was okay to lean into work I had already made and to be as me and weird as possible.

anyway that book did super well in brazil pretty much immediately because of the current trends there at the time (”wreck this journal” had just become really really popular but there were no other interactive journals like that yet). they released it before the USA release date and it was on bestseller lists before the english edition even came out. that success helped penguin’s foreign rights team sell the book to many other foreign publishers and combined it meant that my book was able to end up in a lot of hands. and it is still going, maybe even going stronger now that it’s in more places, has been around long enough for people to see it and think about it and then maybe decide to buy it.

for book 2 (Pick Me Up) i got an agent (i’m represented by LGR) and now i work with an amazing woman there who helps with negotiation, helped me set up meetings with different publishers when i wanted to do a stationery collection, and otherwise works as my advocate. because i already had the first book i could have continued to work without an agent but it’s nice to not be alone and also to benefit from someone’s, you know, wealth of knowledge about tiny details and industry people that i just don’t know anything about. she definitely knows the right questions to ask and understands all the intricacies of the contracts and percentages and all the different sales channels that effect how authors get paid.

so that’s sort of it for me, it was a little backwards. decently-popular book first, then an agent, then more stuff. it’s going ok so far!!!!! but there are so many paths. self-publishing is way easier than even 5 years ago and people make real money doing it themselves if they already have an audience or just have a concept that’s really strong or they sort of game amazon’s category ranking system (amazon is like its own world basically). people get book deals and huge advances and then if the book doesn’t meet expectation and the publisher has already spent a lot of money on them, they might not take a chance on a second book. there’s a lot of guessing and expectations and i guess i really benefit from being a pleasant surprise.

which isn’t to say i am killing it because literally, i am not, i am not rich i am not selling millions of copies, but i am grateful to just get to make books at all. zines i know how to do, and now i guess i do know how to selfpublish my own books, but i’m grateful to benefit from the scale and production and distribution i have, and also penguin merged with random house so now i literally have a contract with the biggest publisher in the world so i don’t really plan on breaking that!

there are tons of different kinds of publishers but it does still come down to actual individual people buying the book and telling their friends and that’s the hardest part. please tell your friends i made some books lol.

Hi! I was wondering what kind of materials you prefer for nondigital art. I am in the process of (trying to) write a comic book and don't know many other people who do nondigital to ask for advice. I really love your art style! Thanks for your time!

thanks so much i love traditional art comix !! ok ive gotten a lot of samples of different nice papers and hq paints from my school but even after tasting valhalla, my GOAT comic supplies are still the very cheap stuff. i primarily use

those yarka watercolor. you can get a surprising amount of different values. The black especially can become really opaque, almost like ink. then i own one paintbrush, its the Beste bushy round #2. my real advice is stick to synthetic brushes bc they’re cheaper and you get more color with less water which allows you to use a thinner paper.

i use these pens which are extremely straight up the best pens

um and then i almost always use strathmore drawing paper (with the intense sexy staring lady on the cover) which is like $7. these are just what i use….i suggest you experiment a lot. when you found the right materials drawing is very relaxing / entertaining ! its like those slime vids. thankfully the stuff i use isnt a huge investment to try out. GOOD LUCK #smokesup
