Today’s life drawing. First, a quick 2 min warm up sketches and then two 40 min drawings. I realised I really like to work with graphite stick, oil bars and some dry pastels for a little colour. I’ve been trying different approaches to adding tone and background. I particularly like the third drawing, with the loose background shading that’s adding depth to the figure.
Left on the floor of his studio, dirt, dust and debris, more than just widely available materials, become as much component materials as oil paint, pastel or graphite. This process of democratization also adds an archival element to his production. By ignoring the formal ideas of painting but intensively processing materials, Murillo unwraps a consciously composed wildness based on things that make life and art.
