Songbird flies again in Ogden Phipps 4YO debut

Heavily favored Songbird wins the Grade 1 1 1/16 mile Ogden Phipps in her first race of the year. Mike Smith gets his third win of the day at Belmont Park, this time for trainer Jerry Holldendorfer in the race for fillies four and up. Songbird had not raced since losing for the first time last November in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where she was beaten by Beholder.

That’s race 5 of 13 already (Belmont Stakes is #11 at 6:37 PM Eastern) .

A Personal First

“Ogden Phipps' Personal Ensign produced her first foal, a Mr Prospector colt, on Feb. 15 at Claiborne Farm (Seth Hancock, president) near Paris, Ky. Champion older distaffer of 1988, Personal Ensign retired unbeaten in 13 starts in her career after she won the Breeder’s Cup Distaff (gr. I). That event was voted Race of the Year for 1988 by readers of The Blood-Horse. Personal Ensign is scheduled to be bred this to Danzig.”

The colt, later named Miner’s Mark, went on to win the 1993 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Jim Dandy Stakes, and Colin Stakes

My Flag was put to sleep earlier today, 15 April 2014, due to foaling complications.
The daughter of champions Easy Goer and Personal Ensign, bred/owned by Ogden Phipps and trained by Claude McGaughey III, raced 20 times, won 6, second 3, and third 4 times. Among her wins are the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, 1996 Bonnie Miss Stakes, Ashland Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, and the Gazelle Handicap.
She turned 21 three weeks ago, on 25 March.

Rest In Peace, My Flag. I am so sorry to hear.
