I think this album should be atop of everyone’s 2016 list. Lemonade has quickly become not only my favorite Beyoncé album, but one of my favorite albums of all time. Beyoncé successfully moves across genres, most notably reclaiming rock & roll and country to their black origins.
2. My Woman - Angel Olsen
To be honest, before the release of My Woman, I had no idea who Angel was. But, this album has most definitely put her on my radar in the future. Angel provides a sort of psychedelic rock sound reminiscent of the ‘60s, and covers the topic of love with such emotion that it is tear-jerking.
3. Puberty 2 - Mitski
Mitski is another artist that I have just discovered this year, and I’m so glad I did. Appropriately titled Puberty 2 for its hormonal nature, the album covers topics such as love, mental health, and societal norms. Another definite tear-jerker.
4. A Seat at the Table - Solange
With this album, Solange further proves her creativity as an Alt/R&B artist. She asserts black pride and describes her struggles with depression on “Cranes in the Sky”. A Seat at the Table solidifies Solange’s place as an individual in the music industry, not to be compared with her older sister.
5. Dangerous Woman - Ariana Grande
Dangerous Woman is Ariana’s most daring release to date and definitely my personal favorite. Permanently shedding her image as “the girl from Victorious”, Ariana delivers a cohesive, sexy, and feel-good dance/pop album with emotional moments such as “Thinking Bout You”.
6. Emotion: Side-B - Carly Rae Jepsen
Who else could release a nearly flawless pop album full of B-sides? The queen of modern ‘80s pop sound really outdoes herself with this one and proves that her critically acclaimed 2015 release “Emotion” was no fluke.
7. Lady Wood - Tove Lo
With Lady Wood, Tove Lo once again provides honest lyricism about sex and love accompanied by atmospheric production. Tove keeps it simple (no pun intended) while still remaining effortlessly edgy. It definitely deserves more recognition than it has gotten.
8. Glory - Britney Spears
The princess of pop has provided her loyal fans with her best release since “Circus”. Britney stays true to herself while delivering an album that keeps up with the times in its production and lyrics.
9. Nightride - Tinashe
While this is just a mixtape for the fans to listen to while they wait for the release of her sophomore album, it is still one of my favorite releases of the year. Tinashe pairs a soft hip/hop sound with thoughtful lyrics that makes for great music to relax to.
10. Anti - Rihanna
The final spot was the hardest to choose, but Rihanna definitely deserves it. Delivering her best album to date, Rihanna transcends genres from Alt/R&B (“Same Ol’ Mistakes” & “Yeah I Said It”) to Pop (“Kiss it Better” & “Work”)
Blonde - Frank Ocean, The Altar - Banks, The Colour In Anything - James Blake, Joanne - Lady Gaga, Vroom Vroom (EP) - Charli XCX, For All We Know - NAO, Glory Days - Little Mix, Starboy - The Weeknd, and Tkay - Tkay Maidza
The man who cracked the pirate’s heart armor was an Au Ra named Tsuyosa.
a prisoner aboard her ship that at the time was her brother’s. He was a kind but mysterious passenger with lethal tendencies kept in check with what Elldys’s believed was one hell of an iron will. The tall man easily left an impression on my poor pirate. Tsuyosa’s disappearance was the final straw that brought around Elldys’s brother’s death, she blamed him for it and was finally able to free herself from under his abusive hands.
“Ima smart girl… I’ve spent years on the seas learnin’ to do more then jus’ sail. I know when to let the greed of m’nature take ‘old an’ when its best to let it go. I’m smart… but na’when it comes to ‘im.
E’s the embodiment of everythin’… that same want a’freedom I crave locked in a strength I wish I could possess, an’ in possessin’ ‘im I get t’feel wha’ its like t’be wanted as much as you want somethin’. I got it bad fer this one..an’ that ain’t bodin’ well… never been good with voicin’ m’emotions, I can ‘andle ‘em jus’ fine so long as I never got to talk ‘bout ‘em.
Maybe I don’ ‘ave to wit’ this one… I get the feelin’ ‘e knows what I’m sayin..wit’out one damn word. Dangerous…compellin’…beautiful..an’ dangerous.
The there was Two.
Two was the first time Elldys realized she could love anyone. He was a broken grumpy monster who became better with her presence. It was the first time she really had the ability to -save- someone. Elldys, however, never voiced this, never even got close to the realization until after it was too late. She disappeared on a voyage under the direction of Lyris and Two moved on, got himself a new partner and a child. It was only after she came back did the factor of love even become known. Too late.
“Khona..we suck at this..so why don’t I just get this embarrassment out of the way huh? I love you… yeah… surprised the hell out of me..and I figured it out too late, but that’s ok cause you got this family and I got this ship.. which is everything I will ever need…but there we go..I said it..I mean it and it don’t change anything at all.”
Stone came along exactly when Elldys needed him, not that she knew it. She was reeling from Two and the girl has the emotional depths that rival the ocean she loves so much and the spiral downward was dangerous. Stone isn’t a complicated friendship for her. He’s loyal, fun loving and those two can gorge themselves on all the gluttony that feeds hungry souls. Stone is a stability for Elldys that she has yet to admit to. The huge man is literally an anchor XD and he pulls on a different side of Elldys she hasn’t quite gotten a handle on, but she does share her pineapple with him and that is huge deal.
What she feels for Stone is still edging on caution.
“Alright… what I like about ‘im. ‘Es great. Actually. First. Makes me bloody laugh every time ‘e opens ‘is mouth, all I wanna do is hang out wit’ ‘im. Second, ‘Es gonna be a hell of ah business partner, and if ‘es half as genuine as ‘es been actin’ then ‘es ah good guy in general.. you know one of those good guys that’ll probably squeeze a guy’s skull from time to time. ‘E’d make a ‘ell of a pirate. Third, there’s somethin’ really calmin about th’big guy, makes me wanna curl up an’ sleep on ‘is chest like some kinda cat… don’ tell ‘im that though.. I’d never hear the end of it…”
Ric…. Ric is bad fucking news. Not in the physical sense, in fact Ric and Elldys, in their friendship are actually very good for one another. Ric is a loyal friend, he’s a troublemaker which Elldys adores and they get along better then anyone I know. Elldys can calm him down, settle him into quiet and even ease all that rolling anger. The problem is, Elldys is head over heels for this bastard and she -knows- his heart belongs to someone else.
This.. it the heartbeat version of hell for Elldys. All the men before Ric have taught her what emotional depths she is capable of, and then this man comes along and drags every single bit of it into the light.
she’s fucked XD
“Hells…. alrigh… let’s do this….
look…. I ain’t ever found someun’ who matched me bettah… we been spillin’bits of our souls t’eachother and each time all I am findin’ is another piece fits. This man…. fuck… well ‘e ain’t mine either. I want ‘im. I want ‘im naked in me bed as much as I want ‘im clothed an’on my ship… I wanna see ‘im smilin’wit an ocean breeze on ‘is skin and I wan’is bloody ‘and in mine. ‘E fuckin’makes me soft an’ I want t’ate it but I can’t.
…’e ain’t mine..
This is m’bloody luck… and m’penance fer havin’a bloody beatin’eart.
