Slow motion view of lava dripping into the ocean at the edge of the Kilauea volcano lava delta

i know the water like i know the earth. i drown in both. it always rains mud in my mind and i am always just one storm away from a mouthful of dirt, fingers digging into the ground or the air or the skin of my wrists.

i know the water like i know the air. i breathe both in. i inhale oxygen to live and h20 when i need to let go but more often than not i am clinging.

i know the water like i know my own heart. both beat within me. an ocean inhabits my lungs, a blue whale at the back of my eyelids and fish like butterflies in my belly. we are both unexplored in different ways, both tides breaking all the same.

i know the water. the water knows me, knows how i bleed because it washes the red away every time. the water knows how i live and how i’ll die. it tried to teach me how to survive and i think it succeeded.

i know the water. i know the water.

At the Edge of the Ocean (Olicity AU fic Part 1)

Hey guys, I’d been toying for weeks with the idea of doing a unique Olicity AU one-shot. I very rarely write fics with mystical elements but once this idea popped into my head, I couldn’t get it out. I also blame @agentsassydirewolf for letting me rant about it and adding fuel to the fire in my creative brain! Thank you, and I hate you (just kidding…kinda sorta)! ;)

Anyway, I’ve always loved mermaids. They are by far my favorite mythical creature. I recently re-watched Splash (a big, glorious mistake) and felt compelled to finally bring my Olicity mermaid AU obsession to life. This was originally going to be a one-shot but while writing yesterday, I realized there was too much to cram into a single post. I also wanted to have this posted in time for Valentine’s Day, so I’m splitting it up into two parts (I’m still working on the second one right now).

I haven’t yet decided if this might turn into a short, mutli-chapter ficlet. But let me know if you guys want to read more, and I might add it to my list of future fics to work on. I’m not sure how the visual aspects and edits will format on AO3, so I’m posting strictly to Tumblr for now.

Thanks in advance for reading, everyone, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Pairing: Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak

Rating: T

Summary: AU. Oliver almost drowns when the Queen’s Gambit sinks and is saved by a mysterious creature. When he learns that his savior is actually a beautiful mermaid named Felicity, Oliver can’t decided if he’s more shocked by her existence or the fact that he feels such a strong connection to her. Coming from two different worlds, Oliver and Felicity must decided if their love is true and what they’re willing to sacrifice to make it work.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Arrow or any of its characters. Except for the Olicity edits, the rest of the images and gifs aren’t mine.

There’s a wicked smile as Fate smashes Cinderella’s slipper. It rains glass shards that night. Peasant girls shouldn’t pretend to be something they’re not.

Fate laughs when Eric marries another. Laughs again when the little mermaid edges the ocean. Love isn’t real, Fate murmurs into the girl’s ear, humans don’t love.

A red apple rolls to the floor, half eaten. The prince lays still, remnants of the sweet fruit on his lips. Fate steals a kiss and licks its lips. Delicious.

How boring, Fate says and walks away. Mulan collapses, fisted hands strike the ground in a fit of anguish. She sobs, draping herself over the grave marker with the name “Fa Zhou.”

Princes are a lie, Tiana thinks as she scrubs the table a little harder. Fate had no hand in her situation, but takes satisfaction in seeing the girl toil for a restaurant she doesn’t own. She’s right, of course; princes don’t exist, only liars do.

Fate likes Peter Pan. It smirks when the boy stumbles upon Wendy’s grave, smiles when the boy returns to Neverland cheeks stained with tears and the taste of death on his lips. Fate likes Peter, but when is love ever kind?

Once upon a dream, Aurora meets a dashing prince. Once upon a dream, she pricks her finger on a spindle. Once upon a dream, Fate stops the good fairy and the sleeping princess never wakes.

The cold may have not bothered Elsa, Fate muses, but what about Anna? It watches with glee as Elsa sobs over her ice encased sister. What’s wrong, princess? Can’t let it go?

The last petal falls and crumbles in Fate’s hand. A heartbreak later, it appears by Belle’s side. Foolish girl, it hisses, you cannot save a monster.

gearstorm  asked:

Could you show how you did the stars and clouds on that piece of art? So beautiful!!!

Okay sure! I’ll make a quick tutorial of how I did it.

First step is to look up references. For one just looking at rad galaxies and stuff is super awesome, but it also gives you a good idea of a lot of different effects you can do so here is a good link to like 25 rad pictures just as an example

start with figuring out the colors of your sky, darkest at the top and lightest at the bottom, this changes based on where and how late into the night so references!

then get a nice and big blur tool and even it out. After that you’re gonna start with the stars. Most drawing programs come with a brush or spray you can use for this with lots and lots of dots where you can change the density and opacity. i stay at 100% opacity and set the layer to Add (Glow) ((some programs have lumosity)). Density of stars change per image

you can make stars using white or blue or red, mix it up, have some fun, make lots of layers with different brightness and if you want a few slightly bigger stars pop out the pen, lower it way down and make a custom dot

Okay this part ^^^ is a little tricky and time consuming. With your refs in mind pull out a soft air brush and lay out the colors in the general area you want the galaxy. Then, I take a rough edged water color brush (you can tool around with brushes here to get what you want but something soft yet jagged edged is a good bet) then you set it to negative. I dont know what its called, but

this little checkered bit beneath the active colors, this essentially makes whatever brush you have into an eraser, then go to town on your galaxy. Don’t be afraid to nearly erase it completely, then lay on more color and erase the edges again. Use alot of layer, erase edges, combine them, and so on to get sort of this whispy cloud kind of shape. Overlay some more bright stars through the middle and tweak to get it just right. Soft brushes, negative watercolor brushes, lots of layers. Even here im not happy so keep playing with it

I edited it a bit more, fudged with the brightness a little and also broke up the background gradient a little to make it not feel so artificial, adding imperfections and things can help with the overall image. This is okay as is, but if you want to do the reflected water look like i did then heres a few more steps.

~~Reflection~~

Make a selection of a strip across and copy and paste it onto a new layer. Then once selected, select Transform and flip it vertically and slid it down the that bottom strip to replace the lightest part of the horizon. This will leave a very small strip of that bright color that is now the horizon above the water of the lake/ocean. If the edge is too hard then take a small blur tool and lightly run it along that edge to make the fade a bit nicer.

then over the top of the reflected space set a layer of black (or dark blue or whatever color works best just a dark color) then lower the opacity to make it look like dark water. blur the hard edge just a touch until it looks good and maybe add a lighter color towards the middle and smooth it out.

I didn’t have clouds in this, but it essentially the same as the galaxy effect. Soft airbrush, negative rough edged watercolor brushes to erase the edges and blur tool. Hope this made sense and was alright! Thank you for asking ^u^

At the Edge of the Ocean: Part 2 (Olicity AU)

Hello, lovely readers! Thank you all for your comments, faves, and reblogs for At the Edge of the Ocean Part 1. The enthusiasm for this AU Olicity concept has been really awesome. It’s so fun for me, because I get to indulge in both my love for Olicity and mermaids!

I also have a mini announcement. While I was writing this and doing edits, I realized that there is still a lot of story left to tell. It’d be way too much to cram it all in this post. So, I’ve decided that this fic will have to be extended. I’m thinking it’ll be about four parts total to really do it justice.

I’m excited to finally share Part 2 with you all. It features new edits, which I’ll admit were a blast to make. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think. Enjoy!

Part 2

A shiver wracked Oliver’s body, rippling through his muscles like a cresting wave and causing him to tremble in its wake. It could’ve been the cool night air or the surf breaking against him on the beach. But the truth was in the beautiful blonde creature currently lying beneath him and kissing him senseless.

Felicity was wrapped as tightly around him as possible, and he held her back just as fiercely. They laid half in the ocean and half in the sand. Oliver had lost track of time, nothing but Felicity filling his senses. She felt soft and warm in his arms despite the coldness of the water. Being submerged for so long, Oliver would’ve been shivering far sooner without her otherwise.

“Oliver,” she sighed against his lips.

Characters: Tom Holland, Y/N

____

The bustling noise around you seemed to become louder with every minuet. Being more embarrassed than ever as you got pity looks and frowns from every table around you. It wasn’t a crowded place, which made it worse.

A small town dinner off of the highway, it was your favorite place because of the chicken nuggets and because it was an old style dinner. It looked like a place straight out of the sixties and you adored it. You and your boyfriend would come here often, he hated it but you got to chose a place every now and then. He was suppose to meet you here tonight but its been over 45 minuets of you sitting alone in the silver and pink booth.

The waiter would look to you every few minuets to see if you were still there. Your cheeks turned a bright shade of pink every time she looked at you with sympathetic eyes. Your phone was on its last strands of life as you texted your lousy boyfriend for the umpteenth time.

You sighed to yourself. About to grab your purse from the end of the booth to leave. This isn’t the first time you have been stood up by him, but you stayed because he always had some sort of perfect excuse, you melted into his hands every time he spoke.

You looked up from your purse and started scooting down the seat when a boy you’ve never seen before came up to the booth and sat down, smiling at you.

“Hey love, sorry i’m so late, traffic is crazy right now,” the boy spoke with a soothing British accent. “I’m Tom, just go with it, yeah? Whatever guy was suppose to be with you tonight is obviously a dick.” He whispered so only you two could hear.

The waitress looked to you and smiled finally. Your face still in utter confusion at why a guy like Tom was sitting in front of you, voluntarily. “Can I start you with drinks?” She beamed, happy to see that your boyfriend finally showed up.

You both order water and she walked away with a smile. “So, how did you know I was waiting for a guy to show up? I could have been waiting for a friend, or family.” You smirked at him putting your hands in your lap. He was very attractive, probably more attractive than your boyfriend. His hair in soft curls all around his head and a smile so pretty you were in a trance.

“Well, obviously someone as beautiful as you has a boyfriend, and I kinda took a hit or miss. I wanted an excuse to talk to you.” He spoke in a delicate voice, placing his hands on the table intertwining his fingers together.

“Ptsh, shut up,” You tell him as the waitress brings you your waters.

“Are you two ready to order?”

“Couple more minuets?” Tom asked her, she nodded and walked off. “So, this guy you were waiting for, boyfriend? Friend?” He asked, and as you were about to speak he raised his eyebrows, “Friend with benefits?”

“Ew, no! That’s weird,” He sipped his water as you gathered your words. “Boyfriend but I’m not sure anymore. It’s always on and off with him.”

“You deserve better,” Tom said out flat looking at you the way everyone always does, with pity.

“You don’t even know me, what if I’m a terrible person?” You joked with him. He shrugged his shoulders.

“Then I’m wrong and should leave while I can,” You both laughed lightly, “but seriously, he doesn’t deserve you.”

You twirled your straw in your water looking down. You could feel yourself blushing at his words. Tom has said more sweet things to you in two minuets than your boyfriend ever has.

You laughed for the rest of the night. On top of being incredibly good-looking, he was funny and actually seemed interested in you.

“So, where are you from?” You inquired.

“South-west London,” He answered obviously proud to be from where he is.

“What brings you to California?” You asked again as you finished your meal.

“Filming. Well, kinda. I’m filming in Atlanta as well but luckily, I’m here for the next couple weeks.” Tom gushed.

“Filming, huh? How come I’ve never seen you in anything then, Mr. Hollywood?” You teased him, he chuckled a bit.

“I’ve grown a lot since my last big role, you ever see The Impossible?”

“I don’t like oceans, I saw commercials for it but never watched it. It scared me,” You confessed to him.

“Hm, what about In the Heart-wait, never mind, ocean movie. Edge of Winter?”

“Never heard of it, sorry.” You laughed a bit.

“You’re not much of a movie person, are you?” You shook your head.

“Maybe I could show you some, sometime.” He suggested to you.

You beamed bright at his comment.

“One more question,” you looked up at him, “Marvel or DC Comics?”

“DC Comics,"You said innocently. He grabbed his heart and fake whimpered and fell back into the booth.

"You’re killing me,” He said with his eyes closed, falling deeper into the seat.

“What’d I do?” You inquired him.

“Favorite superhero?” He said quickly.

“I thought you said only one more question?”

“Answer the question,”

“As much as I love DC, my favorite one is from Marvel,” He looked at you happy for a moment, almost hopeful. “I love Iron-man.”

He fell back down into the seat, this time all the way so his back was on the actually seat. “What about Spider-man?” He said softly from under the table.

“He’s cool,” You said sipping on your water.

“Cool?” He shot up from the seat, “he is more than cool!” He whisper yelled at you.

“What’s got your panties in a twist?” You laughed at him taking another one of his fries.

“I’m about to blow your mind,” he said cockily, “I’m actually Spider-man.”

“That’s cool, man.” You took another one of his fries again without his permission.

“I’m serious! Google it, i’m Spider-man!” Tom got a few looks from neighboring tables you just laughed to your yourself at his reaction.

“I believe you, jeez Hollywood take a chill pill.” You smirked at him lightly.

The waiter brought you the check a little later on and you both fought over who was going to pay for it. Tom was mad that you even brought your wallet if you were suppose to meet your boyfriend in the first place. You guys ended up splitting the bill, still earning protest from Tom but you didn’t care.

Tom walked you out of the restaurant and to your car. You didn’t even care that your boyfriend didn’t show up. You’re glad he didn’t, more than glad.

“I had a lot of fun tonight,” You told him standing in front of your car door, him standing a few feet away from you. “Thanks.”

“Me too,” He cood, the beaming bright pink light from the lights of the restaurant behind him made him seem like he was glowing. “So, about that movie night..” He trailed off, letting you finish the sentence.

“I’d like that a lot,” you smiled. You both exchanged phone numbers quickly, saving your name into his phone.

“Y/n,” He paused, a smile growing on his face. “I realized I never got your name in the diner. It’s pretty, I like it.” You leaned up and kissed his cheek, a smile coming onto your lips.

You opened your car door and got in, leaving him by himself in the pink gleaming lights. Tom smiled at you as you drove away, one thought was in your head: break up with your stupid, lousy boyfriend.
