oblivion bay

A thing I did for the Beyond the Breach Pacific Rim fanbook!  It’s on kickstarter right now, with just 5 days left to go!  Please consider supporting it, if you haven’t already - it isn’t fully funded yet, and we could really use the help!

I’d been wanting to do something like this for a really long time already, and the fanbook was exactly the excuse I needed!  It’s different from my usual thing, but I had soooo much fun looking at old travel posters and postcards to get ideas.

Also, all that lettering?  Every bit of it is hand-drawn.  Yes I’m nuts, and yes I’m also proud of myself.  I love handlettering. :D

Also-also I would totally wear that t-shirt.

consider:

– pearl hits rock bottom

– no self worth

– to ‘make up for it’ she pulls a kamikaze move against peridot

– she gets separated from the team

– team can’t find her gem

– Peridot experiments on HER for the cluster and creates Cluster Pearl

– Cluster Pearl wakes up (regenerates after the experiment?) and says: “I… I’m strong now.” with a creepy, many-voiced overlay.

– Cluster Pearl has all those tiny fingers and stuff growing out of her, and an assortment of non-mixing colors. Like, Akira.

– when the CGs find Peridot, Peridot’s like I HAVE AN ESCORT NOW!!

–  Out comes Cluster Pearl

– Garnet freaks out

– Cluster Pearl is all “Look! I’m strong now! Look look look!”

– Plot twist: she twirls and punches Peridot. Steven bubbles Peridot’s gem before Pearl can smash it.

– All the while Pearl’s drunk on power and mumbling that she’s strong enough.

– She turns to the team, and Garnet punches Cluster Pearl in an attempt to un-fuse Pearl

– Cluster Pearl freaks out at the betrayal – “why?? I’m useful! I can help!”

– Meanwhile Amethyst has no idea WHO to protect and Garnet is all “THAT’S NOT PEARL, IT’S USING HER MEMORIES! TAKE IT DOWN AND WE CAN SEPARATE PEARL FROM THE PARTIAL CONSCIOUSNESS”

– So Ame ropes Cluster Pearl for Garnet to deliver the final blow. the whole time, the tiny fingers surrounding cluster pearl are trying to take out the ropes, or forming mouths that can cut through Ame’s rope. “Nononononono!!”

– Cluster Pearl is screaming.

– Steven keeps begging the CGs to find another way.

– Garnet punches Pearl and tears the body apart, resulting in tiny gem shards plus Pearl’s, well, pearl.

– Pear regenerates 2 weeks later.

– When Pearl regenerates, Garnet is there, Steven is asleep.

– “Are you okay?”

– “I remember everything.”

– The thing keeping Cluster Pearl ‘sentient’ and capable of going against Peridot (that is, having a will of its own) was Pearl’s desire to be stronger.

As long as Pearl held on to wanting THAT she held on to everything else: her memories, whose side she was on, etc. In Chille Tid, we get a view of the ‘mindscape’ where Jasper and Lapis fight for dominance. There’s the same thing within Cluster Pearl, except that there are plenty of wandering, semi-sentient limbs floating around the water, pulling Pearl down, latching onto her consciousness. Pearl had to constantly fight them off for control of ‘Cluster Pearl.’

Basically – the constant crawling of half formed limbs that would have pulled her down into the waters of oblivion were held at bay by her strength of will.

– Thanks for getting me out of there.

– They do end up reconciling, but it will be quite a while before Pearl wants to fuse with anyone (probably with Amethyst first.)

"It’s called Oblivion Bay, and it’s were combat-damaged Jaegers are permanently retired. Graveyard of our robot warriors, if you’ll pardon the expression. This was where the first kaiju, Trespasser, was hit with the first of the tactical nuclear weapons that eventually killed it. Now it’s kind of a memorial. You’ve got Coyote Tango over there. Brawler Yukon, Tacit Ronin… most of the early-generation Jaegers, the Mark Is and the Mark IIs, are here. Diablo Intercept, Matador Fury. Just about every one of them took a kaiju with them.
Quite a sight folks, quite a sight. They started bringing Jaegers here about four years ago and I’ve been watching them come ever since. Kind of gives you a sense of what the kaiju can do.
The barge coming in right now is carrying Vulcan Specter, looks like. God bless her pilots. I’m sure the people of Sydney do. Further up the bay– you can’t see this probably– is the other Jaeger that just fell in Sydney, Echo Saber.
One more little note. The only Jaeger ever taken to Oblivion Bay and then removed again is an old Mark III by the name of Gipsy Danger, made right here in the US.“

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking. We’ve had to take the long way around here on our way into Oakland International and come u from the south, but every cloud has a silver lining. As we start our final approach, you’ll be able to look down on our port side and see something the crew and I think is pretty impressive.

"Apologies, folks. I"m a little bit of a Jaeger fan.
"Flight attendants, prepare for arrival.”
