[283/365] Mom & i had a spa day and went to get massages and she got a microdermabraision done at Sono Bella Clinica Medical spa. got a deal for this month of October for the support of breast cancer. mom was satisfied with her treatments and the massage i got was much needed and felt so relaxing. Movie night with mom & sister later that evening. watched Abduction and mom thought taylor lautner was so guapo haha she gets real critical about movies but i’m glad she enjoyed this one. team jacob! haha Closed out Oberweis for some ice cream and malt while playing some chess. Bonding time with mom & her daughters <3

They don’t have Blue Bell where I live (which is a travesty) that was my favorite ice cream growing up. Oberweis is the only thing that comes close to Blue Bell to me but this shit is expensive. One quart cost me $7. I’m gonna have like a spoonful every other day to make it last.

Tonight my dad asked me to get ice cream for the family. We live right around the corner from the Illinois based chain store, Oberweis and it is always our first choice when we want ice cream. My mother and brother have an allergy to all nuts, including peanuts. Neither of them have ever had a problem eating there before, until tonight. I got my mom an Oreo Frostbite (think McFlurry/Dairy Queen Blizzard). Unfortunately, I forgot to tell the women taking my order in the drive-thru about their allergies. Sure enough, at the bottom of my mom’s Frostbite, there was a peanut butter cup. Of course she didn’t notice it until after she had taken a bite. Immediately I gave her a Benadryl and no more than 5 minutes later she felt her throat swelling so we used her Epi-Pen. She is currently at the hospital in stable condition. I feel guilty for having not disclosed my mom’s allergy with the woman taking my order however, I really don’t think it’s too much to ask for the Oberweis staff to keep their peanut butter cups away from the Oreos. I am very frustrated at how many close calls my family has had due to cross-contamination.

15 million Americans have food allergies. Every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency department – that is more than 200,000 emergency department visits per year.

These are shocking statistics and yet few are giving this condition much attention.

I’ve joined TeamFARE and their efforts to create a safer environment for people with food allergies. It would mean a lot if you would take the time to check out www.foodallergy.org and see what you can do to raise more awareness near you.
