Year 2050. Next stop on the elevator: Space.
Top floor, please! The space elevator has been described in many science fiction stories and many organisations have been working on making it a real thing.
The Obayashi Corp is one such organisation and currently pressing on with developing the concept, which includes a terminal station that will house living space and laboratories and calculates that the journey would take 7.5 days to reach the station. The station which will be a quarter distance to the moon could be ready as soon as 2050, and is intended to be constructed using carbon nanotubes.
Obayashi, the company, is just days away from completing work on Japan’s tallest structure, the Tokyo Sky Tree, which will stand 2,080 feet
