James O'Barr stated on the Crow DVD that when he met the movie’s executives, they originally wanted to make this a musical staring Michael Jackson. He immediately laughed uncontrollably thinking it was a joke.
While I usually refer to The Crow as the greatest gothic music video ever made the truth is I’ve seen it more times than I can remember. I skipped work to catch an early matinee the day it premiered, then saw it two more times in the theatre, then again at the drive in as a double feature with Wolf. Since then who knows how many times on VHS, cable, and DVD.
I think they did a wonderful job adapting J. O’barr’s original dark, and violent, tragedy. As a movie it may not be Citizen Kane (which I’ve only watched once) I think it still comes across as well executed and moving.
