i dont get it whats happening in Sydney?? I'm from the US btw

Okay, so at 9:30, 15th December at Martin Place in the CBD (Central Business District) a woman reported to police a suspicious man carrying a blue sports bag. At 9:45 a man was allegedly seen entering the Lindt cafe - one man was reportedly seen removing a gun from his bag. By 10am the police established an exclusion zone, evacuating everyone within a 150m distance while tactical units and police swarmed the area. They originally suspected it to be a robbery, but the hostages were seen up against the windows holding an Islamic Flag proven to be Shahada. Transport vehicles including buses, cars, planes and trains were instructed to stay away from the CBD. The police have treated the circumstance as a Hostage Situation.

Heres whats known so far (UPDATED):

  • The alleged gunman has been identified as Man Haron Monis
  • Loud gunfire and yelling was heard when police entered the cafe around 2:00am
  • Two hostages and the gunman are confirmed dead. Four hostages are critically injured.
  • Monis held 17 hostages in the cafe for more than 16 hours.
  • Police say Monis acted alone and no explosive devices were found at the cafe
  • Monis was an Iranian cleric on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory before and after the fact to the murder of his ex-wife, and sexual offences.
  • Prime Minister Tony Abbott describes the siege as a “brush with terrorism” and stated the perpetrator had used the “symbolism” of Islamic State
  • Australia citizens have been seen this morning (16th December, 9:00am) laying flowers at Martin Place in memory of the victims

  • As the aftermath of the situation continues it is important to note that this is NOT a chance to spread islamophobia. The terms “terrorist” and “muslim” are two very different concepts, do not let the minority govern the majority
