soul-rin-natsu  asked:

Can you recommend any klance fics?.

I can definitely recommend lots of klance fics. As in, lots lots. I am not completely sure what you are looking for/what you have already read though, so I’m just gonna list some of my favorite authors with some of my favorite fics.

Quick additional info: there are no explicit fics on here, though some are rated mature. All of the stories have klance as their only ship but since I intended this to be author recs rather than fic recs, I will mention what kinds of other ships appear in other fics.

Now then, here you go, in no particular order:

manamune

- Crossroads (106k): not quite canon verse, not quite AU - check the summary

- Plunged (6k): canon verse, Lance teaches Keith how to swim

Roommates (6k): modern AU, Artist!Keith, Photographer!Lance, exactly what the title says

This author’s writing is amazingly smooth and I particularly enjoy their Keith. Crossroads was my favorite fic for a long, long time until I found some others that were just as good :D [this author also wrote some nsfw and sheith]

magisterpavus

- He Who Fights Monsters (65k): AU, there are dragons

This author has a style of writing that makes you forget that time exists. Like, you read their stories, look up 2 hours later and go “what the hell I only just started reading 5 minutes ago”. Their fics are pretty action-heavy but the romance part never falls short. [they wrote a lot of nsfw, their newest fic is shklance]

mackerelmademedoit

- Entangled (102k): canon verse, Keith and Lance get mind-melded

- Right-hand Man (4k): canon verse, Keith approaches Lance after the end of season 2 to talk about their roles from now on

Amazing characterizations here. I particularly enjoyed the OS because it seemed like something that genuinely could happen like this in canon… sadly I don’t think it will, but one can dream, right :’D Also amazing art! [they wrote some nsfw]

redburn

- it had to be you (9k): modern AU, Keith and Lance are professors, lots of flirting

- Echoes In Your Mind (7k): canon verse, Keith is turning Galra

- let the whole world know (4k): modern AU, soulmates AU

I honestly don’t know why I like this author so much? Probably because they can squeeze an entire story into less than 10k words, complete with character development and appearances from friends etc. I liked many more of their OS but there are just so many, you should check it out for yourself. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

varelsen

- Not That Bad (68k): modern AU, socially anxious!Keith, lots and lots of fluff

- just like that (10k): canon verse, Lance struggles with his crush on Keith

this author just? makes reading feel so good? so relaxing?? Their style is focused on conveying emotions and flows really nicely, I strongly recommend to give it a try. [their newest story is nsfw and includes lancelot]

battleshidge (Amiria_Raven)

- Drive Me Crazy (8k): modern AU, lots of flirting and stupid pick-up lines

- Next Level (33k; WIP): modern AU, online gaming, they know each other but they don’t know that they know each other

The style of writing is really, really good and I love how everyone’s friendships get portrayed. The author is also pretty good at writing conflicted emotions. [they wrote some shallura and shidge]

aknightley

- it’s all in my head (8k): canon verse, mind meld

This author is super good with emotions. You always end up feeling what the characters are feeling and I’d definitely recommend going through their other fics as well - once again, there are just so many that I won’t list them all. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

lemoninagin

- You Can Fog Up My Windows Anytime (3k): modern AU, all the awkward flirting

Another author that has a fantastic style of writing and portrays the characters really well. Also another author that wrote so many good things that I can’t possibly put them all on here. [they wrote some nsfw, sheith, shklance, shallura- lots of stuff, check the tags]

MilkTeaMiku

- Moonset Deep (50k, WIP): mermaid AU, lance is the mermaid

- The Quiet (40k, WIP): ghost AU, lance is the ghost

- 7 Days Series (pt 1 - 30k, pt 2 - 30k, pt 3 - 4k): canon verse, lance/keith get turned into babies

Amazing writing, plot-orientated. Don’t let that fool you though, the emotions never fall short. [they wrote some shallura, shance and other ships - also their fics aren’t rated. the ones listed are entirely sfw]

Zizzani

- Drive It Like You Mean It (94k): modern AU, street racing AU, it gets pretty intense later

This writer has a really fluent and nice style of writing and they somehow manage to easily let lots of characters interact. Everyone feels extremely in character and nothing feels forced. Also I know nothing about cars and yet their fics belong to my favorites, so give it a try. [they wrote some shallura]

shipstiel

- Of Don Juan And Elvis (3k): modern AU, soulmate AU

- Barbie Girl (2k): modern AU, soulmate AU, continuation

I’m not sure whether it’s just me but no matter what fic of them I read, they always feel– soft. Easy. Something good for in-between. One of their fics (not the ones listed here) has some pretty heavy topics in it and yet I still feel like that. [they wrote some shallura]

Gigapoodle

- A Moment in the Snow (3k): canon verse, Galra!Keith, snowball fights, fluff

- Carpe Diems and Chrysanthemums (14k): modern AU, hanahaki disease, trans Lance, angst with a happy ending

- A Quarter Past Midnight (14k): canon verse, trans Keith, angst with a happy ending

This author is amazing at writing angst. It just always hits you right in the feels. Like damn. I adore their writing so much but ho boy I was too scared to click the one Chara Death fic they wrote. I couldn’t do that to myself, the two longer OS that I listed here already gave me enough feelings. [they wrote some shallura]

Trashness

- Nightmares (15k): canon verse, sleeping together, as in snuggling, fluff

- Costumed Identities (42k): modern AU, cosplay AU, they know each other but they don’t know they know each other

This author writes Keith’s and Lance’s interactions really nicely. They also never fail to make me smile/laugh with their fics, they are all really cute!! Lots of light heartened stuff here.

SKayLanphear

- Running Flat (11k): canon verse, thought sharing, lance is trying to figure out who has the crush on him

- A Commutal Contract (24k, WIP): canon verse, bed sharing

I really really really enjoy this author’s Lance!! He feels incredibly in character and I swear I can see him act in canon just like he does in the fics. Their style of writing is fluent, nice and adapts really well to the situation.

[I also really enjoy witty_name’s and freshia’s fics, both of whom usually put background shallura into their fics though so I couldn’t list them here]

Aaaand that’s it for now! :D If you have a specific length/specific topics/specific ratings in mind for what you want to read, feel free to send another message!! You can also visit the fic rec tag on my blog, maybe you’ll find something else there.

/EDIT: now there is a part two with some other of my favorite fics

{Special} College!AU Jooheon
  • major: accounting
  • minor: music technology/digital music production
  • sports: said he’d try out for fencing because of his friend jackson but completely forgot about it,,,,,,,,,even though jackson texted him like 405282 times
  • clubs: joined a movie club which is essentially like a book club but you all gather, pick a movie, and watch it. jooheon has picked pulp fiction like five times because he still doesn’t get the majority of what was happening in that movie,,,,,,,,,,
  • if you’ve ever seen those memes about super stressed college students just laying down asleep in the library surrounded by unfinished homework, candy wrappers, and highlighters,,,,,,,,,,that is jooheon
  • if you look closely enough you’ll all see the light in his eyes is gone, his soul has left his body. left the library. left the campus. left this atmosphere.
  • and it is all because of his major,,,,,,,,,,,,which he hates,,,,,,,,,because accounting is just mathematics and droned out professors who sound like they’re saying the same thing over and over and over again
  • and jooheon has thought of bludgeoning himself with his auditing textbook on multiple occasions because,,,,,,,,everything is pain. College is Terrible
  • and all of his friends are like,,,,,bro you’re dragging yourself into a black hole just switch. changkyun is always like “look at me, i love my major because it’s interesting - you look like you haven’t slept in four days and i think your business tax homework is stuck onto your back with some gum.”
  • jooheon with bags under his eyes: i haven’t slept in four days. i haven’t eaten a decent meal in a week. and no changkyun, it isn’t “stuck” to me. my backpack is too full so im being innovative
  • like it’s not even that he doesn’t study,,,,it’s just it’s so bland and boring of a subject that he can’t even motivate himself to apply what he’s learned
  • shownu literally had to come to his class once and pick up a passed out jooheon ,,,,,,,, it’s a Mess
  • the thing jooheon is really interested in is music,,,,,and he’s friends with a lot of the music majors so he gets to use their equipment and stuff if he asks
  • and like,,,,,,he wants to produce songs. and he has,,,,,,,,it’s just that no one knows it’s him
  • he has a soundcloud and every now and then he’ll drop a link to it on the student resource page and like,,,,,,,,,,it’s really popular
  • he publishes them under the fake name h*ney and any of his singles will go viral through school and be played at every dorm party on campus
  • even got off campus when someone tweeted that they were playing a h*ney song at this club that they were at and when jooheon saw he almost fell off his chair because??????? woah people really like what he does
  • but he knows a future with music is practically impossible, plus his own parents don’t know he took the production major as a minor because they’d be totally against it
  • and it sucks to feel like you’re being pulled in two directions; one toward what you really love, and one toward whats best for your future
  • like,,,,,not even his close friends know he’s actually h*ney and minhyuk’s literally always talking about how much he loves the songs and so is changkyun and even picky kihyun,,,,,,,
  • it’s like he’s living a double life LOL and jooheon wishes he could just be himself,,,,but it’s hard when he’s in class and the other accounting majors are all competing with each other for internships at huge companies and trash talking arts majors
  • i mean he already doesn’t really fit in perfectly,,,,,,,jooheon is much more social than a lot of people in his classes and he goes out on the weekends with wonho and minhyuk and sometimes he’ll crack jokes in class and the serious, no-fun students are just like “did you do the homework? what did you get on the midterm? are you working anywhere right now, i just got a job as a lackey at a bank-”
  • and so even with his grades slipping, jooheon knows that he’s never going to be an accountant, work in a bank, like the thought is so????? not him?????????
  • but all he does to deal with it is like,,,,,,work on his music even though he gets nothing in return because of his anonymity
  • and you,,,,,,,unlike jooheon who has a major he hates,,,,,,are undecided
  • and you’ve spent most of college taking random classes and not finding anything that interests you in the least and like it SUCKS
  • because everyone has a plan and you’re kinda like,,,,,,,,shrugging your shoulders because your friend looks at your schedule and is like ?? physics lab??????? international dance???? gender in the eighteenth century???? microeconomics????
  • and you’re just on your phone scrolling through texts or whatever shrugging your shoulders like yeah,,,idk,,,i can’t make up my mind
  • and you actually have microeconomics with jooheon and you sit next to each other in the lecture hall
  • which,,,,,is hilarious because out of all the people there you two have literally zero clue about what is going on because???? microeconomics,,,,,,,,,,,,,,doesn’t make sense to you guys
  • and instead of paying attention and studying you always fall asleep with your headphones on and jooheon has had to get into the habit of nudging you awake if the teacher comes by or there’s homework being passed out
  • and one day,,,, you have your earphones on as usual and you’re blasting the new song by h*ney,,,,and jooheon can hear it you’re listening to it so loud
  • and,,,,he just can’t help but smile to himself because,,,,,,,you don’t even know it but you’re sitting right next to the composer of that song
  • but also right before class ends everyone gathers around to talk about the final and you take your headphones out and you’re like,,,,,,,oh shit,,,,,the final
  • and jooheon is like,,,,,,,,we gotta get notes from someone fast or else we’ll both flunk and you agree but when you ask around most of the students either don’t have organized notes to give out or,,,,,you know,,,,just don’t want to
  • even though you and jooheon pull together a grand total of $22.47 as an offering ,,,, but you realize really fast you and jooheon are royal,,,,totally,,,,,Screwed
  • the both of you sitting on a bench on campus with your head in your hands until you sit up and you’re like “well,,,,,if we fail we fail,,,,not much we can do now. except-”
  • and jooheon turns to see you smirking and he’s like ???? and you’re like “wanna go party our misery away?” and he perks up because oh,,,, now that might make him feel better and you’re like “there’s this place i really like in the city, i go with friends but today ill go with my,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,partner in failure of microeconomics!!”
  • and that’s how you and jooheon end up on the cramped dancefloor of a popular club amongst college students and you can tell that over half of them are doing exactly what you and jooheon are doing: trying to forget the horrors of finals
  • and you and jooheon are having a great conversation on just how much college really stinks
  • jooheon spilling his hatred out for his major while you laugh and tell him at least he has a major,,,,,you’re just floating through completely unaware of what to pick
  • and you’re both shaking your heads with sighs until suddenly the song changes to h*ney’s new song and you light up and you’re like jOOHEON,,,,THIS SONG IS MY FAVORITE and it jusT CAME OUT h*ney really outdid himself this time,,,,,
  • and jooheon watches as you dance a little to the song and he has to take a sip of his drink in order not to break out into a grin
  • because again,,,,,you don’t know he’s h*ney
  • but you look cute,,, enjoying his music,,,,,,and jooheon realizes there’s a reason he loves music and not accounting,,,,,he loves it because it makes other people happy
  • like in this moment there’s a hundred or more other people here,,,young good looking people,,,,,but you somehow hold jooheon’s attention because of how genuinely you’re enjoying his music,,,something he created,,,,
  • and nothing has ever overcome jooheon like right now because suddenly he wants to tell you ,,,,, only you,,,,,,his secret
  • and he reaches out to take your hand and you’re like ????? and he’s like “im going to tell you something but you need to keep it a secret.” and you’re like ??????? sure????
  • and he’s like follow me, ill tell you but i think i need to show you so you’ll believe it
  • and you’re walking behind jooheon and instead of going toward the subway back to campus he’s telling you to come with him on the bus
  • and before you know it you’re in front of an apartment building and jooheon is like “,,,,,you know how im an accounting major right? well im also,,,,,into making music. you might know some of my music,,,.”
  • you tilt your head in wonder because???? how could you know his music you’ve never heard of an artist named jooheon before
  • but when you step inside to the small apartment, turned into a mini recording studio jooheon starts up his computer and he’s like “here - tell me if this sounds familiar”
  • and the minute you hear it the minute you realize,,,,,jooheon,,,,,,is h*ney
  • and you’re like HOLY HELL NO WAY and jooheon is slightly embarrassed by your shocked expression but he’s like iT’s true,,,,h*ney is my side project and stage name
  • and you’re like oh mY GOD im in a room with a LEGEND DUDE YOURE A LEGEND ON CAMPUS
  • and jooheon shrugs, but the compliments make him feel really proud
  • and you’re like “oh my god oh my g OD,,,,,,,,,do you have anything you’re working on???? id love to hear it???????” and jooheon nods excitedly and sits down to start opening up some samples
  • and you literally spend the next two hours going through all of the stuff jooheon is working on and him just telling you about how h*ney came to be, how he learned to sing and rap and produce
  • and you’re in awe,,,,you’re like jooheon you’re amazing,,,,,,god why are you even an accounting major???? music is your talent????
  • and you get up and tell jooheon to play that one song you really liked and you just,,,,dance because it’s so good it’s impossible to hold still
  • and you outstretch your arm for jooheon and he’s turning red like,,,ah i couldn’t,,,,dance to my oWN song,,,,,
  • but you pull him up anyway and even in the tight space,,,, with snack wrappers and magazines all over the floor,,,, you and jooheon dance to the song
  • and jooheon,,,,,,for a moment he swears when he looks at you it’s like he’s seeing you in slow motion
  • your hair hitting your face as you twist back and forth
  • the way your mouth is open just ajar, eyes sparkling with something he’s never seen before
  • and jooheon doesn’t believe in love at first sight or whatever,,,,because he’s seen you enough in class,,,,,,but there’s something about you,,,,,something that draws him in
  • so much so that he shared his bIGGEST secret with you,,,,,,
  • and when you both realize it’s like wayyyy past curfew you decide you’ll just go back to campus in the morning and jooheon pulls out the inflatable mattress he has and lets you take it and he falls asleep in his computer chair
  • but it’s cute when you wake up you’re just like WOW you’re h*ney i still can’t believe it,,,,,
  • but jooheon shrugs and is like “it’s true” and as you’re getting coffee before heading back to school you’re like “oh! by the way - i promise i won’t tell anyone,,, you want to keep it a secret right?” and jooheon nods and you’re like well,,,,,,you have my promise
  • and  jooheon thanks you and you tell him you’ll see him in microeconomics for that final you’re both gonna cry during
  • and jooheon is like waving,,,,but for some reason with you gone it feels,,,,empty,,,,,
  • and throughout the day he keeps thinking about how happy you had gotten listening to his music,,,,,,how apparently a lot of people get happy listening to his music
  • and everytime he’d look down at his accounting textbooks,,,,,,he could just feel that this wasn’t for him
  • and so,,,,,,, at the end of the day he decides he’s going to switch
  • and when microeconomics class comes around and you’re like heY ready to die jooheon tells you his decision and you’re like!!!!!!!! dude im so happy for you!!!!!!
  • and he’s like,,,,,,,,it’s thanks to you,,,,,and you’re like mE??? and he’s like you made me see that music has the benefit of making someone feel something,,,,,i can’t do that with accounting
  • and you’re like flushing a bit because oh,,, you didn’t know you had such an impact but you’re happy you could help!! and jooheon turns to look athis paper but he’s like
  • before the test starts–after,,,do you wanna,,,,,,grab something to eat??
  • and you’re like,,,, as a oh-shit-we-failed-this-final kind of hang out or,,, a date??
  • and jooheon swallows and lowers his eyes but then he’s like “,,,,,like a date” and you feel your stomach do a little flip but you’re like ok!!!! deal
  • tldr; you and jooheon go on that date and it’s,,,,,fun you guys have a similar taste in music and you want to hear jooheon tell you more about his future plans
  • but at the end,,,,when you’re doing circles around campus jooheon stops and goes “you helped me find what i want to do,,,,i want to help you too.”
  • and you’re like idk if you can,,,,,im still undecided,,,,,and jooheon sadly nods but he’s like “for now all i can offer is this,,,” and you’re like ? and he leans down to softly kiss your cheek and you’re like oh,,,,well,,,,,,,ill gladly take it,,,,,,,,,,,,again,,,,kiss me again
  • and jooheon is like on the cheek?? and you’re like nope, on the lips please (-:
  • but jooheon is serious on helping you he gets together a bunch of his friends from different majors to talk with you and you’re like jooheon please it’s ok,,, but he’s like i want to help,,,,,,
  • you start spending more time with jooheon at his little studio and you’re always the first one to hear a h*ney song before it goes out
  • and you’re always hyping up his music because it’s SO GOOD seriously he could make money off producing
  • and jooheon never gets used to having someone stand beside him and praise him but he loves it even more because it’s you,,,,
  • his friend kihyun keeps demanding to know why you and jooheon keep going into the city together so much and you’re both like uMM,,,,,,,,for a group project,,,,,,,,,yeah,,,,,there’s a cafe there,,,,,,,we gtg,
  • and you like being the only one who knows jooheon is h*ney but also you keep encouraging him to maybe go public one day
  • because that means???? other musicians can contact him???
  • but for now everytime you guys hangout at the club you hear a song and you just knowingly grin at each other
  • jooheon,,,,when he hears a song he likes sends it to you
  • he makes playlists regularly and you listen to them whenever you miss him
  • you posted a photo on instagram of h*ney’s new soundcloud single and jooheon commented: oh! you’re a h*ney fan?
  • and you rolled your eyes because REALLY so you replied with ‘he’s my ideal type, are you jealous?’
  • to which minhyuk replied: OH SICK BURN JOOHEON REST IN PEACE
  • you and jooheon both passing out at the library instead of studying until you get kicked out for taking up space and end up cuddled in each others arms in his dorm complaining about how college is hard and you should have both stayed kids instead LOL
  • whenever jooheon overdoes it,,,,which he does a lot he stays up literally three nights in a row to work on a song,,,,,you have to come over and distract him with kisses
  • at some points you even have to sit in his lap and just use one hand to turn off the computer monitor and the other hand to go up jooheon’s shirt
  • and he whines about the song he was working on but the whines turn into low moans soon enough and yes now you’ve got his attention (-;
  • but his friends are all super thankful to you because fINALLY jooheon isn’t torturing himself with accounting
  • you guys literally shred all of his homework once he officially switches majors. you also wanted to do a ritual burning of his textbooks but you were like wait no let’s sell them instead
  • jooheon: good idea. you’re so smart. i love you so much,,,,,
  • also not to mention but jooheon is the sweetest boyfriend he’ll buy you flowers randomly and give them to you after class
  • or he’ll do small gestures that actually mean a lot like he knows you forget your charger so he buys one that fits your phone to carry with him,,,,,,bought you a plush bee and was like you’re my bumblebee and im you’re honey!~~~~~
  • does horribly cringe worthy aegyo to get you to pay attention to him when you’re on your phone
  • but you still think it’s cute because you end up giving in and smothering him in kisses
  • you go to movie club with him once and instead of watching the movie you cuddle and try to throw popcorn into jooheon’s mouth and everyone is like ahEM PDA
  • and you’re like yes pda? i love my boyfriend????
  • you explain to jooheon what pulp fiction is really about and he’s like oh ,,,,,,my god
  • you share earphones whenever you guys take the train together,,,,,it’s really cute,,,,,,,
  • you both did fail your microeconomics final like you predicted,,,,,,,,but it was ok because it was microeconomics that brought you two together,,,,,
  • but you two also totally ripped the final apart in anger and then made out for a good half hour to cope,,,,,,,,LOL

Okay, this might take a bit.

Transcendence AU

Essentially, when Bill fails the apocalypse and is dying, he makes one last desperate attempt to survive by trying to posses Dipper without his permission. Dipper fights back and by a hair’s chance manages to push the weakened Bill from his mind, killing the demon. Only, Bill has already rooted himself too deeply into Dipper and all of Bill’s power remains in Dipper, turning him into a demon and forcing him out of the physical plain. Because of his human origin, Dipper is the only demon capable of becoming physical without a rift, although it takes a while for him to figure out how. Now, while Bill was stopped from destroying the world, it was at the cost of the Transcendence. Pretty much the entire world becomes as magical as Gravity Falls and even more dangerous. Dipper becomes known as the demon Alcor and Mabel is his partner in cult bashing partner Mizar. There’s a lot of world building (reincarnation, prejudice against non-humans, monsters in everyday life, thousands of years as Alcor, Uncle Dipper, angels, other demons, awesome new characters, etc…) and overall, the blog is its own fandom that is constantly contributed to. TAU is the largest, most organized, and highest quality AU that I have ever seen. It’s huge. And fantastic.

Here’s a longer summary.   This is its wiki.    Its TVtropes page.

Demonic Guardians AU -

Here’s the main comic behind it. Demons’ can have one human that if they bond with and protect, will make the demon stronger. There’s a catch though. If the human dies, a part of the demon does too. The stronger the bond between demon and human, the more damage will be inflicted on the demon when the human dies. Not all humans have a demon, and not all demons have a human. A bunch of the cast of GF have demonic guardians, each character having a different level of bond. Bill Cipher is Dipper’s guardian. Mabel’s is Dot Matrix (used to be named Tad Strange; might recognize him as the square with the bowler hat). Gideon’s is Kryptos (the star on top his tent). Stanley has Pi Mo (looks kinda like a coin). Pacifica’s is the Lumberjack Ghost. There’s a whole lot of fan made demons too. The creator is really cool. Outside of Demonic Guardians AU, she’s made the Danny Phantom crossover: You Smell Like Death, the Over the Garden Wall crossover: Garden Falls, and her own really good comic: The Boy Who Fell.

Monster Falls -

Dipper finds a magic stream called Fluvius Cantatis, some stuff happens, and everyone in the town gets turned into monsters. Dipper’s a Deertaur, Mabel’s a mermaid, Wendy’s a werewolf, Stanley’s a Gargoyle, Stanford’s a sphinx, Gideon’s a vampire, Robbie’s a zombie, Soos is a clay homonculus/golem, Pacifica’s a gorgon, Bill’s…human like, etc… This AU is mostly fan art and fanfiction. Sometimes the monster that a character is turned into is different, but this list is what they’re most commonly depicted as.

Reverse Falls -

I have no idea where this AU came from??? All the characters in this have swapped rolls and personalities. Gideon Pines is a kid visiting Gravity Falls with his cousin/best friend Pacifica Pines(or Southeast). While there, they meet the psychic twins Mabel and Dipper Gleeful who run the Tent of Telepathy. The twins are much darker and more powerful than Gideon from Gravity Falls. Will Cipher is an easily terrified Demon who just wants the twins to leave him alone. All the other character’s changes depend on the artist/writer. Robbie and Wendy usually swap.

Relativity Falls -

This is essentially an age/generation swap. Twins Stanley and Stanford go to spend the summer with their Grauntie Mabel. The main switches are Mabel with Stanley, Dipper with Stanford, Wendy with Dan, Gideon with Bud, Pacifica with Preston, Abuelita(Maria) with Soos, etc… Most of the show is the same, with a few twists and the added personality of having a different character in whatever situation.

Anti-Gravity AU -

Though not to be mistaken for Relativity Falls, Anti-Gravity is also an age swap. Wendy and Soos are young kids who find Journal 3. Mabel and Dipper are teenagers who work for Grunkle Stan at the Mystery Shack. Pacifica has Robbie’s role (dating Dipper, to Wendy’s jealousy). Bud Gleeful takes Gideon’s place as Wendy and Soos’s enemy. Robbie is Soos’s bully. Other than that, all characters stay the same.

Reunion Falls -

Dipper and Mabel are separated at birth: Mabel growing up with their parents in California and Dipper being raised by Grunkle Stan. Eventually, Mabel finds out about Dipper and runs off to Gravity Falls to meet him. Without a twin, Mabel, while still bright and cheerful, is less out going while Dipper, growing up with Wendy and Stan as role  models, is more confident. The AU is the twins getting to know each other and bonding.

Only Child AU -

Mabel is stillborn, making Dipper an only child. Because of his parent’s ever growing grief over losing a child, Dipper is often neglected. Dipper has the same personality as cannon, but it’s buried under self-worth issues, survivor’s guilt, need to be loved, and shyness. He’s a sad child who really just needs a hug. He also knits sweaters; he always wears the red one he made (it looks a bit like Ford’s). The AU is Dipper’s stay at Gravity Falls with Stan and eventually reaches to him growing up and gaining a little sister, baby Mabel (who both he and his parent’s adore). The AU is all art right now, but the creator is eventually going to make a fic for it.

Fright Falls -

Mabel gets turned into a vampire. Dipper gets turned into a werewolf. The AU is their adventures as creatures of the supernatural. There’s a lot of cool art for the AU.

Immortal Pines AU -

Immortal Pines is a comic where Bill kills Mabel and Dipper, only to realize that it wasn’t what he wanted. He brings the twins back to life and makes them immortal by infusing them with his power. This means that they only exist in the dreamscape. The AU is them trying to get back to normal before they become too much like Bill.  The artist is cool.

Twin Demons AU -

Mabel and Dipper are the Demons, while Bill ‘Billi’ is the 12 year old human. Billi is an innocent, if lacking common sense, kid who’s come to Gravity Falls to stay with his Grunkle Stan. The twins are demons with big plans that involve Billi, much to his horror.

Blinded AU

The Society of the Blind Eye doesn’t wipe Dipper’s memories of the supernatural, they wipe all his memory.  The Society takes him in, indoctrinating him into their ways. Bill visits and uses Dipper as a spy. The AU is an amnesic Dipper living with only the Society and Bill as company.

Apocalypse Falls

Mabel’s decision in Not What He Seems has catastrophic damage on Gravity Falls. The Shack is destroyed and many people undergo….changes: physical, mental, even death. Dipper gains wings while Mabel’s mind spirals into madness. The AU just got rebooted, so the story-line is unknown at the moment.

  Gravity Rises -

Another swap AU, this time between personality and symbols. Mabel is Pine Tree, the intellectual and mystery obsessed twin. Dipper is Shooting Star, the laid back and creative one. Stan and Ford switch. Pacifica takes Gideon’s role as Crescent Moon, the leader of the Order of the Crescent Eye (Bill’s cult). She’s a sociopath and the main antagonist. Gideon takes Pacifica’s role as Lone Wolf, the rich kid turned anti-hero. Terrifying with his magic, even Bill is wary of Gideon. It’s a cool AU that’s very different from the show even though it’s partially a personality swap.

Joseon AU -

An AU where Gravity Falls takes place in the Joseon Kingdom in Korea. Everyone wears traditional clothing of the time period and place of the Joseon Kingdom. The AU is mostly fan art.

Coven AU -

Mabel and Dipper are the apprentices of Grunkle Stan in a wold where magic is common. Bill’s a magic cat.

Gravity Keys  -

In this AU, Gravity Falls is set in Key West, Florida. Mabel has a chicken instead of a pig, but other than that, most things stay the same.

Church AU -

It’s Gravity Falls, but in a church. Bill is a demon. Bill is in the Church. Dipper is just so angry at Bill. Things don’t go well.

Kitten Dipper AU -

Dipper finds a comb that has a cat shaped handle. When he brushes his hair with it, he gets turned into a kitten! The AU is Dipper the cat.

Carnivàle Falls

It’s the 1930s. Mabel and Dipper go to stay with their Grunkle Stan at his traveling freak show. Gideon is a faith healer. The Dust Bowl is a problem.

Spy AU -

Stan and Ford are spys with Fiddleford building their gadgets. They’re trying to take down the Cipher Organization.

Camp Cipher -

Gravity Falls, but as a summer camp. The teens are counselors while all the kids are campers. Nice art.

Never Human AU

Stanley Pines was stillborn, replaced with a Fae or Changeling. When in Fae mode, Stan had six glowing green eyes. There’s some angst of Stan learning to deal with the fact that he’s a monster and not actually related to his family. It’s later revealed that Dipper is also Fae, which really freaks him out. Mabel is super accepting, so everything turns out fine. It’s a really great AU with fantastic fics and art.

Ghost Stan AU -

Stan is a level 10 ghost. It’s awesome, and Stanley makes a great ghost. There’s a lot of sad. Stan’s dead. The AU has a whole bunch of fanfiction and fanart.

Joml AU/Grim AU -

Stanley befriends the Grim, omen of death. As soon as Ford finds out what Stan’s done he freaks out because, well, Stanley has the omen of death as his pet. Really cute and funny AU. Got some angst too though. Also, Stan makes his own journal.

Frankenstan AU -

Stanley dies pre-portal opening. Ford, being the idiot that he is, bring Stan back to life Frankenstein style with the help of Fiddleford. This includes digging up Stan’s body. It’s also got a mystery trio vibe going for it.

Sharpie Promises

Note: I don’t know if I’ll publish this or not, but basically, I’m a ho for TMNT and soulmate AUs and I’ve never seen a TMNT Soulmate AU, so here you go. It’s the 2k14/2k16 turtles btw. Idk. I might do more of these if you guys like it.

Raphael wasn’t human. He had struggled with this, but had eventually come to terms with the fact. He didn’t have a soulmate and he wouldn’t ever find love. Not in a world full of humans. He tried to be all right with it. Keyword: tried.

It wasn’t until he was working out one day that he felt something cold and wet travelling across his left forearm. Just as quickly as it had started, it stopped. He removed his three-fingered hands from the weight he had been lifting and sat up to examine it.

Hi.

Messy black letters written in Sharpie. His green eyes narrowed. What was this? He had never felt or seen anything like this. But there it was, plain as day on his arm. He stared at it, afraid that the words would disappear, but no. They stayed right where they were. And then soon after, more appeared from nowhere, as though a ghost was writing on his arm with an invisible marker.

So, it’s like three in the morning here and I don’t know if I’m doing this right, but um, hi.

A long pause. Raph stared in amazement, too shocked to say anything.

You’re probably asleep, aren’t you? Dammit. Well, um…bye, I guess.

He had never run so fast in his life.

“Woah, woah, watch it!” Donnie raised his arms as Raph pushed his chair away from his station and grabbed a Sharpie, pulling off the cap between his teeth and scrawling in the empty space on his arm.

Wait.

***

Your heart raced as a response finally appeared.

Wait.

Big, messy letters that you could tell had been written in a rush.

I’m here. Who are you? What’s happening?

You stared at the letters, the handwriting. Your stomach dropped, the nerves kicking in. This was it. This was your soulmate. You had no idea how this worked. No one did, but it worked, and that was all that mattered. A magical pen-pal from far away, probably. Why anyone would be up at this ungodly hour besides you was beyond you. But now you had to reply. You turned over your arm to write back.

I’m (Y/N). Your soulmate, I think. I don’t know…this is what everyone else does, but I’ve always been too shy to try.

***

Soulmate.

Raph’s heart skipped a beat when the word was written on his arm. Soulmate. He had a soulmate. He actually had…Oh my God.

“Raph, are you crying?” Mikey asked, looking up at his older brother, whose eyes certainly looked a little misty.

“N-no. I just got dirt in my eye. Go away.” He sniffled and smiled.

“Whatcha doin’?” the youngest turtle looked over Raph’s shoulder and scanned a few words before he raised his arm far above Mikey’s head, but he had already seen it. Soulmate. “You…you have a soulmate?”

“I guess so.” Raph shrugged. By now, Donnie and Leo were paying attention to what was happening.

“You have a what?” Donnie’s head snapped around. He pulled down Raph’s arm to examine it. But there it was, plain as day. What the internet described as a ‘soulmate exchange’. “I didn’t think it was scientifically possible for you…for us to have…”

“Are you serious?” Leo came over to look.

“What do I look like? A freakin’ museum?” Raph snapped. “Now go away. I gotta write ‘er back.” The others gave him some space as he walked over to the couch and sat down, the tip of the Sharpie hovering over his green arm.

Soulmate, huh? Did think I had one of those. Name’s Raphael. Nice to meet ya.

***

What are you, a renaissance artist? Lol JK

Something like that.

So where are you from, Mr. Renaissance Artist?

New York, New York.

Seattle, Washington. Well, this might be a little complicated, huh?

Something like that…

***

You wrote to Raphael until the sun came up and then you crashed. You had thought it was a dream until you saw the words written there the next morning. You had a soulmate. His name was Raphael. He was from New York.

But at least he existed. It could be a lot worse.

It wasn’t until about noon, three o’clock there, that you wrote to him again, after having wiped your arm off to give you more room to write.

Good morning.

You wake up at noon?

Only when I’m up until sunrise talking to my soulmate.

Fair enough.

So how’s your day been?

Overwhelming.

Fair enough.

***

Leo, Donnie, and Mikey were all bunched behind Raphael to watch.

“Go away!”

“Dude, we just wanna watch.” Mikey whined.

“Go! Away!”

“All right, sheesh,” Donnie walked back to his lab, and Leo and Mikey reluctantly walked away.

So…

He wrote.

What’cha wanna talk about?

I don’t know.

What’s it like in Seattle?

Rainy. What’s it like in New York?

Noisy. He replied, a smirk spreading across his scarred lips. How old are you?

Seventeen.

Same.

Nice. How tall are you?

Like 6’5”-ish.

Holy shit! You’re gonna have to bend down to kiss me.

Kiss you. He was going to kiss you. Eventually. A new concept. Butterflies spread through his stomach, but he tried to play it off.

You a shorty?

Compared to you, yeah. Always had a thing, for tall guys, though. No worries. ;)

He smiled.

Got any hobbies? You asked.

Ninjitsu, bein’ a giant mutant turtle, etc…

Uh, I knit sometimes. And I work out. A lot.

Mr. Muscles the Knitting Renaissance Artist. You keep getting better and better.

So what do you do for fun, Shorty in Seattle?

Oh you know, read, write, spend ungodly amounts of time on the internet.

Sounds fun.

It is. So, anyways, I’ve been looking into New York travel recently (and by recently I mean right now immediately) for reasons, you know. Anyway, what area of New York should I travel to in…ten months when I go to college (that I’ve just applied to) there?

***

After a long day of talking to you and patrolling and trying to work out, Raph was exhausted. He laid in his top bunk, reading your ramble with a smile.

After replying, he knew it was time to go to sleep.

I’m wiped. I gotta sleep.

Oh, okay. Goodnight Raph.

Night, (nickname).

I love you.

His heart skipped a beat.

I love you too.

I can’t wait to meet you.

Already countin’ down the days, babe.

Me too.

***

Weeks later, you got an idea.

So, theoretically, if I were to Skype you, would you pick up?

I don’t have a Skype.

I want to hear your voice.

I can call you, if you want. I just don’t do video chats?

Why?

Because I’m a giant freaking mutant turtle and I don’t want my soulmate to hate and/or be afraid of me.

I want to see you for the first time in person.

All right then. Here’s my number.

You waited in bated breath for your phone to ring, and then suddenly it did. Your thumb hovered above the accept button. You felt like your whole body was trembling.

“Hey there.” You could hear the shaking in your voice. He chuckled, and already you loved the sound of his laugh.

“Hey yourself,”

“Oh my God, I love your voice.” You gushed.

“I love yours too, shorty.”

“Aaaaah! Your accent is so hot!”

“Heh, yeah.” He smiled.

“Ooh, are you talking to (Y/N)?” Mikey asked. “Can I say hi?”

“No, you can’t. Shoo.”

“Who’s that?” You asked.

“My little brother.” Mikey tried to reach up and grab Raph’s phone, but he squirmed away from him. “Mikey, go away!”

“But-!”

“Go away!”

“I wanna say hi to your girlfriend!!”

“Mikey, leave Raph alone.” Leo smirked from across the lair. The youngest brother left, deflated.

“Sorry ‘bout that. Where were we?”

“I was gushing over your very attractive voice, Mr. Muscles.”

“Ah. Right.” He tried not to blush and failed miserably. A slow smirk snuck across his lips. “I love you.”

“I love you too!”

***

“Did you get it yet?” Raph called you a few months before you were supposed to arrive. As the day approached, he got more and more anxious. You would be here in New York and he wouldn’t be able to skirt around the truth anymore. He was a giant turtle and you were a human girl. It wasn’t going to work out.

But nonetheless, he had sent you something. Something to remember him by if it didn’t work out, he supposed.

“It came in today! I haven’t opened it yet, though. I’m going to right now. Give me a sec, I’m gonna put you on speaker.”

“All right.” Raph listened as you set down your phone and put him on speaker. Then came the noise of you cutting the tape and opening the small cardboard box and sifting through the tissue paper.

“Oh my gosh! It’s amazing! I love it! You really made this?”

“I did.” He smirked. You held up the perfect little pendant. A polished wooden turtle that Raphael had carved himself. It hung from a simple twine string. You put it on immediately, tying the necklace around your neck. You let your fingers run over all of the intricate little grooves.

“I’m never taking it off, I hope you know that.”

“I’m flattered.” He chuckled. “I can’t wait to see how it looks on ya.”

“I can’t wait to see you.”

A nervous little laugh.

“Yeah. Pretty soon, now.”

“It couldn’t come soon enough.” You smiled warmly. “It’s late. I’m gonna get some sleep. Exams tomorrow and then I’m out of school for the summer. And then, only two months until I get to see you.”

“Well, you rest up, shorty. Get good grades. I don’t want ya to fail.”

“Good night. I love you.”

“I love ya too. Night.”

When he hung up, he stared at the ceiling. God, what was he gonna do?

***

You were full of jitters when you landed in New York two short months later. The time had crawled by so slow, but you passed the time. And now you were here, the center of the modern world.

“I’m here! I just landed! When do you want to meet up?”

“Um, how about you get settled? Go to your apartment or whatever. I’ll come over tonight.”

“Okay.” Your heart raced. “Okay. I’ll see you then. I’ll uh, get you the address once I find it.”

“Sounds like a plan. Stay safe. I’ll see ya tonight.”

“See you.” When you hung up, Raph started to pace through the lair.

“I’m going to see her tonight. Oh my God. She’s gonna find out I’m a giant turtle and she’s gonna hate me.”

“Statistically, after ten months of-”

“No more science bulllshit, Don! I’m a freak! She’s gonna run screamin’ and I’ll never see her again!”

“It’ll be fine, Raph. You’re over reacting. As usual.” Leo’s tone was cool, annoyed. “She loves you. We’d have to be blind not to see that.”

“I guess we’ll find out tonight, huh?” He slumped onto the couch, a deep dread setting in. Tonight was not going to be pretty. He knew it.

***

After you had unpacked and met your roommate, a very nice woman named April who had been searching for a roommate for some time now, you called Raph and gave him an address. He asked about how things were and so you told him about your roommate. He chuckled. Well, that might make things a little easier. He told you he wasn’t far and he would be over in a few.

“Who’s that?” April asked after you hung up.

“My soulmate. He’s the reason I moved here, actually. He’s coming here if that’s okay.”

“More than fine with me.” She smiled. “What’s his name?”

“Raphael.” You told her. Her face lit up in surprise. Now the turtle necklace she had complimented you on when you walked in made a whole lot of sense. She doubted that you knew why though.

So this was the (Y/N) he had talked about. His soulmate. Shorty from Seattle.

“Nice name.”

“I know, right?” Your phone buzzed. “Oh my God, it’s him.”

“Hey babe, come outside.” You stood there in confusion for a second. “Fire escape.”

“Oh, okay. I’ll be down in a sec.” You nodded, tucking the phone away. Your heart raced as you climbed out the window and down the metal fire escape to the alley below. There, in the shadows stood a very tall, very large silhouette.

“Hey there.” It was him. His voice. In person. “I uh, I need ya to promise me something, gorgeous.”

“What?”

“Just…p-promise you won’t scream.”

“Why would I-?”

“Promise.”

“I promise.” You stated certainly.

“I, uh, I ain’t exactly…normal.”

“I love you, Raph.”

“You won’t when you see me.” His voice was quiet as all of his insecurities came to the surface.

“Raphael,” You reached out for him, hand forward for a long few moments until his three-fingered green one met it, pressing against it like Tarzan and Jane. Something familiar and something foreign. You gasped quietly, but when he moved to pull away, you gripped one of his large fingers. “Please.”

He let out a long sigh, considering bolting then and there, but he gave in and took a few slow, heavy steps out of the dark to where you could see him. Your soulmate was a giant mutant turtle. He waited for the sting of rejection, for the tears of disappointment streaming down your cheeks, but they never came. Instead, you pulled his muscular arms around yourself, clinging to him as though this was your last chance. He held you tight against his plastron, his knees giving out in the wave of relief that washed over him. Raph buried his face in the crook of your neck, and you felt hot tears against your skin.

Thank you.” A broken whisper from his scarred lips. “Thank you.”

“I love you.” You kissed his cheek and then his forehead, and you lifted his face to look at the green face under the tattered red bandana.

“All ‘uh this don’t bug you?” He asked, tear-filled green eyes searching yours. “You don’t care that I’m a freak?”

“You’re not a freak, Raphael.” The feeling of your soft skin against his face drove him up the wall in the best possible way. “Not to me.”

“Are ya just sayin’ that because I’m your soulmate?”

“I mean it.” You locked eyes with him and he felt as though you were staring into his soul. His smile was the most gorgeous thing you had ever seen. Curiosity sparked behind your eyes as you examined every inch of him, taking him in. “What are you?”

There wasn’t hatred or fear in your voice, only awe.

“I’m a mutant. A turtle. Hence the uh-” he motioned to the necklace around your neck. “That.”

“I love turtles,” You whispered as you kissed his snout. You were so close. So close he could just about…

You closed the gap between you, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. He didn’t know how to respond, but followed his instincts and tried his hardest to kiss you back. His large hands held your hips and your small hands framed his jaw before moving to his shoulders, fingers gently searching the terrain of his shell.

When you finally pulled away from him, you looked at him for a long time.

“Hey do you wanna come up for pizza?” April called down from the apartment window.

“Yeah, sure April. Are the guys coming?”

“Just got off the phone with Leo. They’re on their way.”

“Wait, you two know eachother?” You asked. Raph smiled and shrugged, finally getting to his feet and taking you with him. God, he was so tall.

“We go way back.” April smiled. “I named him.”

“What?”

“Long story. Come on, shorty.” He picked you up off of the ground as if you weighed nothing and carried you on his hip, your feet dangling a foot in the air. “’Bout time you met my brothers, huh?”

***

After you had met his brothers and enjoyed some celebratory pizza, the six of you had settled down to watch a movie. At the moment, Raph was spread out on the couch with you laying on top of him and a cozy red blanket draped over both of you. He nuzzled into your neck as your hands traced gentle circles on his plastron.

“I love you, Raphael.” You kissed his jaw. He hummed contentedly.

“I love you too, soulmate.” The word had never sounded so right.

Y/N’s POV

“Hey.

The voice was unfamiliar so you ignored it, still mostly passed out anyway from all the alcohol. But apparently, the person wasn’t going to take the hint because a moment later you felt a hand gently touching your shoulder. “Hey, wake up. You can’t sleep here, honey.”

“Wanna bet?” you murmured and turned over.

“Oh, let me handle this,” another voice, this one’s clipped tone all too familiar, snapped, and then someone was slapping your face and saying into your ear, “Get the hell up, kid, before I tell Jason to drag your ass out of here.” Jason, your bodyguard, who had actually forcibly carried you out of places many times before. This wasn’t an empty threat. You groaned and pried your eyes open, and your bleary gaze landed on the bottle of Jack beside you. Despite the awful taste in your mouth and the headache you were starting to feel, you snatched it up and took a swig as you sat up, tossing a slow grin at the two men standing before you with heavy disapproval. One was your manager, Kevin, and the other was…a preacher?

That’s when you noticed the morning light falling in colors through the stained-glass windows, the rows of wooden pews, the crucifix hanging above you…because you were sprawled out on the altar of a church sanctuary.

Wow. Wild night.

“What time is it?” you yawned, about to bring the bottle to your lips again but Kevin seized it from your hands, shooting you a look.

“Seven AM,” the preacher said. “I have to start getting ready for service, so if you could kindly—”

“Sure,” you nodded. “I’ll give a sermon. That’s basically just a rant about how we’re all going to hell, right? I love reminding people that they’re all damned.”

The preacher gaped at you and your grin widened, but then your manager caught you by the arm and yanked you roughly to your feet.

“Excuse us, Preacher,” he apologized and you winked as Kevin towed you down the aisle and out of the sanctuary. Your legs were a little wobbly – but after so many years of drinking, you’d built up a pretty strong tolerance for liquor, and considering how many shots you’d thrown back last night, you were impressed at your stability. Although your headache was starting to intensify now.

“So,” you swallowed against the pain as the two of you made your way out of the church, “what’s the plan for today? I vote for a day off – oh, I know this little breakfast place that has the best pancakes you’ve ever eaten—”

“You really think you deserve a break after your little stunt last week?” Kevin snapped.

Your face hardened at the memory. “Look, that photographer was a sleazy dick. He kept brushing his hands over Lucy when he thought no one was looking! That’s disgusting as it is, but she’s only sixteen! I would punch him again, given the chance.”

“No, you absolutely will not.” You reached the parking lot, and Kevin waited for you to get into the back of the car before sliding in behind you himself, as if making sure you didn’t run away. Jason nodded at you from behind the wheel. “Anyway,” Kevin said briskly as he gestured for Jason to start driving. “There’s been a change in your schedule.”

“I’m not doing another fan meet, if that’s what it is, unless you want my head to explode. Migraine,” you clarified at Kevin’s confusion. You had never minded those events.

He shook his head and handed you his phone as Jason pulled out of the lot. You glanced down at the screen and found a video waiting for you, an After School Club episode from a few days ago.

“What is this?” you asked and when you looked up, Kevin was grinning at you.

“Just hit play.” So you did.

Mark’s POV – A few hours later

Mark wrinkled his nose, trying not to sneeze as his makeup artist patted the concealer on his face into place, adding the finishing touches. Beside him, Jackson and Bambam were also trying and failing to remain still as their hair was carefully patted into place and their clothes smoothed. It was dark in the wings of the stage, but only a few feet away, bright light bore down on the talk show set. He could hear the chattering of the live audience and the cacophony of the tech crew getting things ready. They were going live in just a couple of minutes.

“You ready?” Jackson asked as he came over, picking a piece of lint off Mark’s shirt.

Mark rolled his shoulders and flashed Jackson his best aegyo smile. “Oh, yeah.” In reality, he was exhausted. They’d been on their feet for the last sixteen hours, running through airports, in the studio, doing last minute promos for their upcoming album. They were lucky they’d even managed to shove some food into themselves in between the chaos. Once this show was done, they could finally get some rest. Mark was already half-asleep behind his camera-ready smile.

People were getting into place now. The host, a loud and amicable man by the stage name of Alex, was settling into his armchair, and Mark took a final sip of water from the bottle he was holding, feeling the reflexive nerves tighten his stomach. At least this was only a short interview, and a laid back one at that. Alex was known to be pretty chill. It wasn’t like a variety show where they would have to do a lot. Just talk, and with Jackson and Bambam here with him, Mark wasn’t too worried about getting tongue-tied.

“Everyone ready?” the head cameraman called, but it was more of an order than a question. “We’re live in five, four, three, two…” He gave a thumbs up, and Alex’s face lit up as the cameras rolled. Here we go, Mark thought.

“Hi guys, welcome back to another episode of Afternoon With Alex,” Alex beamed into the camera. The crowd applauded, and Mark handed his water bottle to a passing PA, clapping Bambam on the shoulder as he came to stand with him and Jackson. “Today we have three members of a certain group you all know and love…you could say they usually ‘got 7’ members…” The three of them groaned but then immediately smiled as they were ushered onto the set, “Here they are – GOT7’s Jackson, Mark, and Bambam!”

They walked across the stage and waved to the crowd, bowing to Alex before taking a seat on the plush sofa resting opposite his armchair, Jackson sitting between Bambam and Mark. The set was nice – small and spacious, giving it more of a living room feel than a stage.

“Hi boys, how are you?” Alex turned his thousand-watt smile on them. At their chorus of ‘Good’ he continued, “So, you have a new album in the works, correct?”

More promotions, Mark swallowed a sigh and sat back, letting his friends do all the talking.

He’d contented himself to dreaming about his bed, and it was only when Jackson nudged his shoulder that he snapped back to attention.

“Mark hyung is the only one,” Bambam said in response to some question Alex had asked.

“I’m the only…what?” he laughed to cover up his embarrassment for zoning out.

“The only one who might have plans for Valentine’s day,” Bambam finished with a naughty smile. Valentine’s Day? Why—

Oh wow. That was today. That’s what the vase of roses on the coffee table next to them was for. And the pink balloons hovering behind them. And their red outfits. In the midst of everything, Mark had forgotten all about the holiday.

“They’re just kidding,” he shook his head with a laugh. “There’s no one in my life right now.”

Alex raised a brow mischievously. “That’s not what I heard.”

Oh boy.

“You mentioned in an After School Club episode that your ideal type is Y/N,” Alex prompted.

Ah, there it was. It was Valentine’s Day, after all, and what decent host wasn’t going to bring up a hot topic like celebrity romance? “I did,” he smiled bashfully, picturing her. Y/N. An idol among idols. Her face was on thousands of websites and billboards, on posters and in magazines, and yet the image of her that came to mind and made him warm was completely different.

“That was a good episode,” a voice said from behind, and Mark felt the blood drain from his face as he and the members jerked their heads around to see—

Y/N. In the flesh. Standing half-hidden in the wings of the stage. At the sudden attention on her, she grinned and walked onto the set as the audience went wild. Bambam clapped a hand over his mouth, Jackson was in hysterics, and Mark…

Mark couldn’t seem to get his heart to restart.

The three of them watched as she bowed to Alex before coming over to the sofa, and Jackson half-knocked Bambam onto the floor in his hurry to make room for her. Laughing, Y/N settled in between Jackson and Mark. There wasn’t much space, so her bare thigh was pressed flush against his – and that was another thing. As part of her image, she was almost always dressed in all black, usually jeans and leather, but today she was in a red dress and tight denim jacket. And Mark was not unmoved.

“So, unless you’ve been living under a rock,” Alex addressed the audience, “you’ll know that this lovely young lady is none other than Y/L/N Y/N, the main rapper and vocalist of the popular girl group, 7/11.” Another cheer from the crowd, and Alex turned back to her. “Thank you for joining us today, Y/N.”

“How could I not?” she said with a sly look at Mark. He could feel his face burning as he ducked his head. Well…he was wide awake now. He’d figured there was a chance she would see the ASC video, but he’d never imagined this would be the result.

“Yeah, tell us about your reaction to finding out that you’re Mark’s type.”

Y/N nodded. “I called Jia, one of our other members, and I was like, ‘Jia-yah, there’s this cute boy who likes me!’”

Cute. Mark could feel Jackson looking at him smugly but all he could focus on was her. She’d called him cute.

“And what did Jia say?” Bambam asked eagerly.

“She told me to stop drunk-dialing her.” They all laughed at this, and Mark couldn’t help but marvel at her. This was the same girl who was as famous for her temper as her charm. Not a month went by where she wasn’t the front page of some tabloid, busted for a new bar brawl or gambling or getting wasted in public. The media called her a catastrophe, but man, did she clean up nice.

Alex was having a great time either way, apparently. “What’s your ideal type then?” he asked her. “We already know Mark’s. Jackson likes healthy girls, and Bambam likes a girl with a pretty smile. What do you look for, Y/N?”

“Oh, a heartbeat, usually.” She shrugged, pleased at their second round of laughter. “I don’t know, really. I don’t think I’m girlfriend material, so I don’t give it a lot of thought. And c’mon, which parents are going to approve of me for their son?”

“Aw, you’re not a bad person,” Jackson said, and she shot him an amused look.

“I didn’t say I was bad. I’m just not good. There’s a difference.” Mark watched her carefully cool expression with intrigue.

“I’m sure that’s true,” Alex said quickly, clearly hoping to regain control of the conversation before they crossed into controversial territory. Teenagers loved Y/N’s rebellious, screw-the-rules attitude, but their parents were less than happy to patronize her and her group’s music. “Anyway, I was hoping we could end our show with a little Valentine’s day game.”

Dammit. Mark plastered a smile on his face to hide his apprehension. A game? Not only was he going to have to do something most likely embarrassing, but he would have to do it in front of Y/N. “You all remember the Kiss The Radio event GOT7 did in 2016, yes? The one where the members put on lipstick and kissed Bambam?”

Mark felt his stomach drop. Where was Alex going with this? They nodded, and he continued. “Right. I was thinking we could do something similar – the GOT7 members will put on some lipstick again but instead of Bambam, they’ll give Y/N a kiss and one of these roses,” he gestures to the vase. “And then she’ll consider of all of you and choose one member to be her valentine.”

Before Mark could die of horror and excitement, Y/N raised her hand. “I have a suggestion,” she said, and Alex nodded in encouragement. “Since the boys have already done this, why don’t we switch it up a bit? I’ll give them a kiss and a flower, and they can decide amongst themselves who will be my valentine. Maybe rock, paper, scissors or something,” she chuckled.

“Oh, I like it!” he clapped, and Mark felt a fluttering in his stomach. To be kissed by Y/N…

The four of them stood up as she began to prepare. She was handed a tube of liptstick from a PA, and as she walked over to the camera to use its reflection as a mirror, Jackson elbowed Mark playfully. “I should take a leaf out of your book and tell girls I like them during interviews,” he smirked.

When Y/N was done, smacking her lips at the excited audience, she came back and plucked three roses from the vase, one pink, one red, and one white. That’s when I Like You stared playing in the background, and after pausing to sniff the flowers, she turned to the boys with a gleam in her eyes.

It was time to begin.

The GOT7 members lined up at the center of the stage, and Y/N made her way casually to Bambam first.

“Hi Bambam,” she dimpled, holding the roses behind her back. She looked like a shy schoolgirl.

“Hey,” he tried to say coolly, but he just sounded flustered. With an affectionate smile, she offered him the white rose and he accepted it, grinning nervously. But there was an uncharacteristic softness in Y/N’s eyes as she touched his face, and it seemed to put him at ease as she pulled him down to place a kiss on his forehead. Bambam looked like he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after she let him go, and she chuckled.

When Y/N stepped towards Jackson, however, her entire demeanor shifted. Mark watched with fascination – and something else – as she tilted her head back and stared up at him from beneath hooded eyes, a lazy smile on her face as she playfully dangled the pink rose in front of him. Jackson took the rose with a squeal – which was abruptly cut off when Y/N tore her jacket off, threw it on the ground, and yanked Jackson into her arms before pecking him on the cheek. When she released him, he collapsed dramatically on the ground in a heap, earning a laugh from the audience.

And then it was Mark’s turn. His heart pounded behind his ribcage as she moved into his bubble of space. Somehow, up close, she was even lovelier, and Mark fought the urge to brush her hair back and hold her close until whatever rage was driving her reckless behavior faded. Instead, he just beamed down at her as she shyly held out the red rose. His eyes never left hers as he took it, and then her hands, surprisingly cool for the hot weather, were on his face. Gentle, she was so gentle, as if she was afraid she would break him. Y/N stretched up on her tiptoes, and for the briefest second that also felt like an eternity, her lips hovered over his.

And then she moved higher to kiss his nose.

The audience might have been cheering, but Mark couldn’t hear over the ringing in his ears as she drew away. Unlike him, Y/N didn’t look flustered or excited or affected at all. She just looked…exhausted. But the smile never left her face.

Before Jackson, Bambam, or Alex could say anything, Mark hesitantly reached for her hand, and she gave it with surprise.

“Y/N…” he tried not to sound like a nervous twelve-year-old, “will you be my valentine?”

She looked at him, really looked at him, and then with the most heartbreaking smile, she said, “Yes.” But it wasn’t her smile or her answer that broke his heart – it was her eyes.

Because her eyes were saying no.

“Hello?” You answered; trying to sound casual and like you didn’t just have an emotional and sexual roller coaster.

“Hey! I sent you like a thousand gazillion messages.” Taehyung says over the phone cheerfully. “Are you ready? We’re like 5 minutes away.” It never failed to amaze you how quickly Taehyung could recover from an awkward situation, like when you rejected his hug or flat out denied his requests or jokes.

“Oh, uh, shit.” You say. You should really learn how to keep your thoughts to yourself. Jimin gets up from the couch and strolls casually to the kitchen, buttoning his jeans as he does.

“Isn’t she ready?” You hear a softer voice ask and peg it as Jungkook’s.

“So you’re not ready?” Taehyung asks you.

“Not- not exactly?” You say nervously.

“Tell her we’re not in a rush, we can wait.” Jungkook says. Is he always this sweet?

“Ok, that’s fine. We don’t mind waiting.” Taehyung repeats to you. “We’re like a block away, though. Can you open for us?”

“Oh, about that. I’m not home.” You start nibbling at your nails, feeling sorry even though you didn’t want to go to this party in the first place.

“Where is she?” Jungkook sounds curious but not at all annoyed.

“Where are you?” Taehyung, the middleman and the one who is clearly not driving, asks.

“At Jimin’s.” You knew you didn’t need to give directions. Taehyung knows the way.

“Jim- never mind. Just try be ready.” He says briskly and hangs up. What’s up with this guy?

Pairing: Lin-Manuel Miranda x reader

Warnings: some angst my dudes, also kissing

“Wait!” Lin called after you as you ran from the stage, ignoring Alex’s confused shouting.

You ran through the backstage, thankful you knew where you were going. The tears you had barely blinked back before  were now running freely down your face and blurring your vision. It had felt so right to be in Lin’s arms, kissing him, seeing adoration in his eyes to match yours.

As Vanessa, you had let out all your frustration and anger about him leaving to London. You had asked him to stay, kissed him, and realised you were too late. How were you supposed to move on after that?

You heard Lin’s footsteps behind you and, turning the corner, opened the first door you found and slipped inside, hoping he’d walk past. You closed the door quietly and turned to see what room you were hiding in.

It was Lin’s dressing room.

You swore silently. His dressing room looked personal- more than yours, certainly. He had photos of his parents, of the original Hamilton cast, and from the old In the Heights days. There was one of him and Karen out together, both grinning with their sunglasses perched atop their heads. There was one of him and the Hamilton cast at his last performance. You and the rest of the ensemble were standing on chairs, grinning and giving the cast bunny ears. You smiled fondly, feeling nostalgic for simpler times.

Lin had a couch in his dressing room, clothes draped over one end. You sat down on it heavily and figured you could take a moment to compose yourself before you had to be back onstage for the Finale.

You took a deep breath and leaned back, closing your eyes. You would have to talk to Lin, you realized, but not now. And without telling him how you really felt. You would go back to being Eliza opposite Javi and try to forget about Lin. It sounded like a reasonable plan when you thought it out.

And a plan that was promptly shot to smithereens when Lin walked in the door, stilling when he saw you.

Imagination vs Speculation

Fiction has two modes: the imaginative and the speculative. The mode that has to do with pure, unbridled invention and the mode that tries to think logically about rules and consequences. So the imaginative parts of Lord of the Rings have to do with the whole-cloth contrivance of things that don’t exist: ents, hobbits, dwarves. The speculative parts have to do with how, given the rules of Tolkien’s universe, his characters might behave. What would it take for a homebody hobbit to leave home? This principle goes for stories that lack ‘fantastic’ elements as well. The imaginative part of Huckleberry Finn is Huck and Jim and their life circumstances. The speculative part is what it might take for Huck and Jim to bond and run away. Imagination is Jim finding a dead body. Speculation is Jim preventing Huck from seeing it.

(That good speculation requires a good imagination is a given. But it is still different, for my purposes, from the act of creating something from nothing.)

In order for speculation to be concerned with what might happen though, it has to be concerned with what is. Every act of speculation speaks as much about what rules a writer thinks govern a fictional world as it does about how those rules might manifest. And if a writer is trying to speculate about how reality could go, as many writers are, then they are proposing hypotheses about the way reality is. In a third season storyline of The Wire, for example, the show imagines that Baltimore establishes a zone for the legal use and exchange of drugs. It then speculates how the government, police, and citizens would react—revealing general principles about what motivates these people and why.

But fiction is weird. Fiction usually isn’t concerned with either a fictional reality or a real reality—but both, simultaneously. So in a satirical movie like Election, the story is at once attempting to distill a supposedly real phenomenon (what happens when unscrupulous people butt up against cowards and innocents) and be consistent within a necessarily heightened movie reality. Which means that fiction, in order to feel ‘correct,’ has to scan according to both realities. If you don’t think that automatons of ambition exist, or you don’t think that they succeed in the end, or you think using Tracy Flick to depict that kind of person puts unrepresentative blame on the heads of teenage girls—the speculation doesn’t track for you. On the other hand, based on what the movie establishes about Tracy Flick, we would also consider it ‘illogical’ or bad speculation if she suddenly behaved selflessly.

Interestingly, the more metaphorical or satirical a work is—in other words, the more it is attempting to have meaning—the more, I would argue, it becomes concerned with ‘real’ reality. The more, that is, its implications about reality affect whether or not it works. If I’m watching Transformers, it doesn’t actually matter that much whether it makes sense that a giant alien robot would pal around with a teenage kid. Because Transformers isn’t trying to claim much about reality.* But if I’m watching a production of Rhinoceros, it sure as hell matters whether I think fascistic impulses exist, or whether they colonize people in the absurd, virulent way Rhinoceros depicts. It matters less whether Rhinoceros establishes complicated rules for its fictional world. Though it should be (and is) self-consistent.

*(Insofar as Transformers is trying to distill a reality, one might claim it is trying to distill what a certain attitude or fantasy looks like. So it is consistent with the reality of the terms of that fantasy—cars, heroism, hot girls— rather than whether or not that fantasy is especially likely to happen. “If I were trying to make the perfect heterosexual boy fantasy movie, what would I include? In other words, what is the perfect heterosexual boy fantasy movie? What defines a heterosexual boy?” In a thoughtless execution of the het boy fantasy genre—XXX? Crank? I don’t know—this kind of consistency would matter even less.)

What am I getting at? I want to set aside the definition of ‘speculative fiction’ that acts as a euphemism for science fiction. And I want to examine what makes good or bad speculative fiction, and what counts as ‘speculative fiction’ in the first place. Right now, the terms ‘science fiction’ and ‘speculative fiction’ are a confusing conflation of three different genres:

1. Fantasy with tech or futuristic trappings. Star Wars, Transformers.

2. Speculation about the consequences of a scenario that doesn’t exist (a technological innovation, a social innovation, a crazy circumstance). Looper, A Handmaid’s Tale, Asimov, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Contact.

3. A technology or a fantastic setting as a metaphor for a real world phenomenon. The Forever War, Metamorphosis, Frankenstein, Xenogenesis.

There are good and bad executions of all of these genres. And of course they tend to overlap. But in order to talk about whether a given work is failing or succeeding, we have to talk about which realities the works are trying to make claims about (or take as a given), and therefore whether or not the claims are accurate or convincingly depicted.

The first category mostly only needs to scan according to its fictional reality. When this kind of story makes a claim about real reality, it usually tends to be a claim about human emotion or human values (what is tragic, what is virtuous, what is cool). The questions you ask about Star Wars are things like “Is this fun?” or “Does it make sense that Luke is sad here?” The last category, in turn, mostly needs to scan according to its real reality. Something like Xenogenesis makes you ask questions like “Is this effectively evoking the conflicted, shell-shocked experience of cultural assimilation?” Frankenstein is more of a story about hubris rather than a story primarily about the actual consequences of reanimating the dead. Stories in this category can be tremendously complex on the narrative level, and care about being consistent and exciting on that level, but the speculation part tends to exist primarily in the service of a concept rather than itself.

I think of it this way: speculation in service of a concept will be closed, rather than open. The Wire’s Hamsterdam storyline is open because there was no way it really had to go, other than the way that the writers thought logically sprang from the state of Baltimore’s citizens and civic institutions. But something like District 9 is trying to convey a pre-established position about the mechanics of prejudice and othering. District 9 is more effective if its narrative logic is sound, but there was also no way District 9’s plot was going to depict any fallout from alien contact other than xenophobia. Top-down rather than bottom-up storytelling. Evidence-based versus theory-based. This isn’t inherently a good or bad thing, for the record, just a distinct difference in genre. In metaphorical stories, the logic of something is considered more or less known to the author; the problem is how to get other people to internalize the logic.

True speculative fiction (category 2) and true narrative fiction (category 1) seem to resemble each other more than they do metaphorical fiction (category 3) because they both take the bottom-up approach. What is something like a sitcom (situational comedy) other than putting characters in a scenario and asking what will happen? Beyond approach, what Friends and Star Wars and Game of Thrones and Isaac Asimov all have in common is a curious paucity of thematic content (that is: it’s difficult to say what they are “about”), but not in a bad way. Extremely hard speculation like The Wire tends to not be terribly thematic because theme requires a certain amount of artistic control that epistemically honest speculation doesn’t lend itself to. When works of hard speculation are thematic, and when they’re good, they seem to mostly lend themselves towards themes about the complexity of systems. Which makes perfect sense. Hard speculation is also different from “hard science fiction” that mostly applies its hardness to its setting and not to its narrative. Only occasionally, like in things like The Silmarillion, does a hard worldbuilding story understand that its worldbuilding is the story and put the focus there accordingly.

All this said, most works of speculation are in-between things. Things like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Brazil or Her or Children of Men or Contact or Snowpiercer. Eternal Sunshine is fairly honest speculation about how people would use a memory-altering technology, but the only reason the story proposes that technology is to explore things about romantic relationships. Most stories, in other words, choose their speculation in a thematically pointed way, even if they’re not transparently allegorical.

The thing I want to figure out is why the way that something like Eternal Sunshine speculates thematically is so much better than the way that something like Her does, despite the fact that they have similar subject matter and approach. While both pure narrative and pure metaphor and pure speculation can all, to a certain extent, get away with ignoring one or both of the above, blended works seem to ignore the other categories at their peril. The absolute worst executions I can think of are the metaphorical stories that are undermined by a refusal to speculate. Stories that have such a poor understanding of consequences or such a lack of curiosity about them that it ruins the metaphorical and literary power of the reality they are trying to convey (see: what it means for a work of art to take itself seriously). A good metaphor will not simplify reality, but will open it up, and this is impossible to do without a good understanding of what reality is (or a respect for the fact that understanding reality is overwhelmingly difficult).

Works like Her and Snowpiercer seem weak to me because their artistic reach extends their grasp, but in a lazy way rather than a forgivably ambitious way. They imagine overly wholesale fictional circumstances: all the people fall in love with their computers, all of society is trapped on this train. These are huge statements about the pervasiveness of both loneliness and the stratification of society, yet neither of them are convincing on the individual character or narrative level, and so their huge claims fall flat. Theodore mostly seems to be lonely because he’s an almost inhumanly stunted person. I found myself wishing the movie were just a simple story about an individual in the real world that falls for a catfisher. Similarly, I felt that Snowpiercer would almost be more convincing as a story set in an actually oppressively stratified country. Those “realistic” stories would be less symbolic, but far richer. Although movies like The Matrix and Children of Men also have overly ambitious speculative conceits, both put considerable effort towards the complexity and excitingness of their narratives and also make much smaller claims about reality. The Matrix is a metaphor for a more generic feeling of unreality and aimlessness, while Children of Men tries to be a thriller in a speculative circumstance, but makes few sweeping, moral claims about society that it has to prove. Poor speculation, in other words, takes its ideas as “given” and uses metaphor as a kind of autotune to conceal a lack of work.

Sango saw her work-friend walking towards the building they worked in. She could have been smiling and calling her to go inside with her, but this time it was not possible. Kagome, the cute, sweet, honest and decent woman that had been her desk mate and best friend from work for the last year was now walking beside him.

Sango’s big chocolate eyes narrowed as she stared at him. He was not the drop-dead gorgeous type. Neither had he the best character or disposition—that she knew from experience. What did Kagome see in him to betray the man she had loved for more than a decade? A man that—before she met HIM—was the center of her life, along with their two sons.

Shaking her head, Sango saw them stop just before reaching the building’s door. After he whispered something into her ear and she giggled, he pulled her to the bush line until they were hidden by the myriad of green leaves. By the look on his face and the blush on her cheeks, Sango knew what they had been doing.

‘Iron Fist’ deserves to flunk out of the TV dojo: EW review

Marvel’s Iron Fist isn’t just the wimpiest punch ever thrown by the world’s mightiest superhero factory. The new Netflix binge swings and misses so bad that it spins itself around and slaps itself silly with a weirdly flaccid hand. But even that might be generous. “Swing and a miss” implies effort. Iron Fist — devoid of vision, lacking in executional chops — barely even tries. It assumes its own marvelousness and proceeds tediously from there, offering few satisfactions for any possible audience. The media was only given six of the season’s 13 episodes for review, but I was snoozing after two and ready to check out after three. This is yellow belt drama that deserves to flunk out of the TV dojo.

The biggest problem with Iron Fist might be the property itself. With all due respect to character’s creators, comic book legends Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, Iron Fist, at least in my humble opinion, just isn’t all that interesting, and the show’s creator and exec producer, Scott Buck (Dexter), and his team fail to unlock any hidden potential or enhance the material to convince me otherwise. The storytelling formula they’ve been given doesn’t do them any favors, either. Iron Fist introduces its protagonist with the kind of season-long origin story common to Netflix-Marvel shows, in which an adult with extraordinary abilities and painful backstory works out issues and slowly develops a costumed vigilante identity. Daredevil forged the mold. Jessica Jones perfected it. Luke Cage did it well. Iron Fist just does it, lazily going through the motions like a bored tai chi artist.

Iron Fist has been described over the years as Iron Man with martial arts, but the series is a wannabe Batman Begins and a few other things, too, stretched way too thin. Danny Rand (Finn Jones from Game of Thrones) is an orphan who lost his billionaire parents when they all crashed in a suspicious plane accident in the Far East. Found and raised by monks who reside in a wintry Brigadoon known as K’un-Lun, Danny spent his formative years learning a mystic type of martial arts. Along the way, he acquired and honed a magical stroke of channeled chi called the Iron Fist, which causes his balled hand to Flame On! and obliterate anything with Hulk Smash! force.

RELATED: Comic-Con 2016: See Portraits of Marvel Studios Stars

All of this hoo-ha is doled out in bits and drabs of flashback. Like all Marvel-Netflix shows, Iron Fist wants to be an adult-skewing neo-pulp urban crime serial, so it downplays the supernatural aspects as if terrified of them. Danny’s blazing balled fist? It’s used sparingly. (As usual, the connections to the broader Marvel Universe, with its thunder gods, sci-fi monsters and radioactive spider-men, are conspicuously minimized.) More so than any other Marvel series, the concept is beholden to the mandate of “the produceable premise,” and the producers have limited imagination for fulfilling it. Anyone wanting Fists of Fury in the City should table the expectation, and modern comics fanboys should abandon all hope of anything resembling the celebrated, stylish run of the comics treatment by Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and David Aja that leaned hard into the fantastical.

Iron Fist — which, like Daredevil, aspires to be one half workplace drama, one half action-adventure show — spends the first half of the season slooooooowly developing the first half of this hybrid personality. The series proper begins with Danny — presumed dead by the rest of the world — returning to New York to reclaim his life, fortune and place within the massive corporation started by his father and pursue his do-gooder destiny. In a refreshing change of pace, Danny is no dark knight, though his reverse negative formulation isn’t all that compelling. He’s an elevated man-child, light of spirit and movement, lit with a simpleton’s purity, a hippie-dippy Chauncey Gardener. He re-enters Manhattan on bare feet, gawking at skyscrapers; he shows up at Rand Industries naively expecting to be recognized and greeted like the prodigal son. This could be interesting and it should be funny, but the writing and directing don’t know how to make it so. Jones nails the earnestness, but that’s all he plays.

Danny, an overtly spiritual character, adheres to some form of generic, modulated Buddhism marked by a disinterest in worldly attachments (like, you know, shoes) and a remove from anger that doesn’t detach him from a want for justice. Some have criticized Iron First sight unseen for cultural appropriation, and they’re not wrong. The show validates the complaint by being both slavish and shy about Danny’s purely fantastical K’un-Lun origin story. The character has always been white in the comics, but who cares? Ultimately, I don’t see why Marvel couldn’t have cast Danny with an Asian actor.

The enlightened individual Danny has become contrasted with two childhood friends who initially present as antagonists, but really represent the people he needs to save: brother and sister Joy and Ward Meachum (The Following’s Jessica Stroup and Banshee’s Tom Pelphrey). They’re now soulless suits who manage Rand Industries on behalf of their puppet master pops, Harold Meachum (David Wenham), a ruthless, reclusive mystery man. He has a love interest — and, presumably, future partner in ass-kicking — in the form of Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick, also from Game of Thrones), a tough and lonely martial arts instructor. (Let me note here that all of these actors are very good, but their characters are skimpy and boring.)

Pacing issues hamper so many Netflix serials. In the Marvel shows, the lag hits around mid-season. Iron Fist is sluggish from the get-go. At first, Joy and Ward take Danny to be a crazy man and treat him as such: Episode 2 traps him in a psych ward, an idyll that immediately sidetracks the narrative when it should be settling into a premise. Eventually, the Meachums come to accept that Danny is Danny and begin to wrestle with the implications, which prods them to confront their own waywardness and set them on track to go from foes to allies. By episode 6, Iron Fist gets Danny into a suit and has him helping people — but it’s a three-piece business suit. His heroism consists of saving the soul of Rand Industries, from trying to make things right with a family devastated by Rand’s toxic pollution, to investigating a plot by Japanese ninja gangsters known as The Hand (introduced in Daredevil), to use the company as a mechanism to sell drugs in Manhattan.

I think Iron Fist wants to be some subversive scold of capitalism or secularism. Rand Industries is monolithic big business as super-villain — the Evil Corp. of Mr. Robot (but without any of the personality or true menace imbued by Michael Cristofer’s Phillip Pryce or Martin Wallstrom’s Tyrell Wellick) — with Danny functioning as a redemptive agent, facilitating change from within, not with subversive hacking but with his love-thy-neighbor conscience and atoning activism. I’m not going to dump on those values; I just wish they were played bolder and with more imagination.

The alt-New York that the Marvel-Netflix shows is interesting, at least in concept. You got Luke Cage up in Harlem participating in the redemption and reconstruction of a struggling community. You got Daredevil and Jessica Jones down in Hell’s Kitchen, looking out for the poor and for women and everyone who would exploit and prey upon them. Now, somewhat above them all but also among them, we have Danny, a billionaire suit with a heart of gold, exercising a liberal social conscience in the board room and on the streets. My theory about Marvel’s The Defenders — the forthcoming team-up show — is that it’ll be a superhero remake of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Whatever they do in The Defenders, whoever the heroes battle, I hope the fights are better than ones we get in Iron Fist. For starters, there aren’t many of them in the first six episodes. But the ones we get are shockingly lame, from the choreography to the performances to the way they are shot. They’re yoga fu.

I think the idea is that Danny is so disciplined in his technique, so mature about his use of violence, he can dispatch opponents with a minimum of moves and with the precise amount of force necessary for the situation. But the show’s ambition to produce an illusion of effortlessness results in fight scenes that look like no effort was put into them at all — as if they shot the dress rehearsal and moved on. All of this said, great fight scenes take time to produce, and in Hollywood, time costs money. I’ve often suspected that Marvel-Netflix shows are made on a tight budget, and it could be that Iron Fist is saving all its pennies for the second half of the season, which promises to have more action as conflicts start to boil, bad guys make their moves, and Danny moves into masked crime-fighter mode.

Yet I can’t say the first half of the season does anything to make me care enough to stick around and find out if I’m right. Iron Fist is pure kung-phooey. Make him number 100 on your list of TV super-guys. D

Iron Fist will be available for streaming Friday, March 17 on Netflix.

Caroline’s finally getting to voice an animated character (her dream!), but she didn’t know how much time and effort goes into it as a creative team. She’s paired with Klaus, who studies her character traits and facial movements to bring life to the screen.

“Hold still, please.”

Caroline fought the urge to fidget as the massive camera revolved around her, capturing her image from every possible angle. It was hard not to track the man operating the camera with her eyes. His attention to the placement of her freckles was almost invasive, but he was incredibly hot.

The brass curls were artfully mussed, just enough that Caroline wanted to run her fingers through them. And his lips, god, they were so pink-

She shook her head, hoping to get rid of whatever lusty demon had taken hold of thoughts. Really, it was her own fault for swearing off dating after Tyler moved out. A cleanse was standard breakup routine, but maybe three months was too long.

“I said to hold still,” Klaus snapped, though his hand was gentle as he gripped her chin. “If we don’t get the digital model right, I’ll have to start all over.”

Your first day at the ice cream shop, but guess who else works there…

It wasn’t like you at all to be late, but you found yourself in this exact predicament as you ran down the paved sidewalk towards the ice cream shop. One of those days you thought with certainty you set your alarm on your phone. Luckily you awoke just in time, throwing on a v-neck and some shorts you found on the floor before grabbing your sketch book. He said it was never busy, so you figured you’d have some time to kill during your shift.

What a great impression for your first day; you thought, huffing to blow the bangs out of your eyes. The bell above the door rang out as you entered. The smell of sweet sugar hit you immediately when you walked in. It brought on a sense of nostalgia, similar to walking into a candy store.

It was empty inside except for a single mans figure. He was leaning back in a seat reading, his feet set upon the table in front of him.

“You’re a tad late,” his voice called out from behind the book which hid his face.
