What’s the latest in NOW? One of Brazil’s most renowned living artists, Adriana Varejão is perhaps best known for her Azulejão or “big tile” paintings, ongoing since 1988. These highly inventive paintings, in plaster and oil paint on canvas, refer to azulejos, the square, painted terracotta tiles whose complex provenance connects Brazil with Portugal through trade and colonization. On the eve of her first exhibition in Rome, opening tomorrow night, October 1st, from 6–8pm CET, Gagosian director Louise Neri chats with Varejão about the evolution of the Azulejão series.
LOUISE NERI Your Azulejão or “big tile” paintings are unique in the history of contemporary art. How did they evolve?
ADRIANA VAREJÃO For many years, I have been deeply fascinated by the traditional blue and white tiles that decorate religious and secular historical buildings all over Portugal and Brazil. I wanted to reflect on this in my work as an artist. The tiles themselves prompted me to think about how to give my paintings an extreme physicality. I began by using thick layers of oil paint, then adding mass to the surface to simulate the quality of a ceramic tile.
LN Are there other inspirations beyond the azulejos?
AV In studying Chinese Song pottery of the eleventh century, I became fascinated by its characteristic surface cracks and the related philosophy. It is in these cracks that Chinese writing actually originates. It was oracular; at first people tried to codify the cracks in turtle shells. This is how the first Chinese pictograms came about. An entire aesthetic evolved from reading meaning into cracks, slowly becoming its own culture.
Inspired by this, I began by using thick layers of oil paint, then I started adding mass to simulate the quality of a cracked tile, working with slow-drying plaster and experimenting over time to achieve a cracked surface.
LN In your paintings, the cracks in a tile become something very physical, almost geological.
AV Yes, I developed this elaborate process of construction to provoke incidents, mapping the passage of time.
LN How long does it take for the surface to dry?
AV Up to one month. And I never know exactly how the surface will crack. It is fascinating, like the hand of an invisible artist at work—the same hand that makes the lines in your hand, the roots of the trees, lightning in the sky.

Eating animals and their products is not healthy for you, it’s not good to stuff your body with hormones. It is not good to drink puss filled milk which is meant allow a baby calf to grow into a full sized calf, you don’t need that in your body. You don’t need to be eating butter when there are SO many vegan alternatives that taste exactly the same. You don’t need to wear the skin of another creature. You don’t need to support the industries that are throwing male chicks into grinders alive. You don’t need to worry about protein when eating animals is giving you too much and there are options like leafy greens and beans and rice. You don’t need to eat the flesh of another creature, they make cruelty free “meats”. You don’t need to destroy the environment when on a vegan diet you can save 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square feet of forest, 20 lbs equivalent of CO2 EVERY DAY. You don’t need to kill dolphins and turtles as bicatch of overfishing. You don’t need to only love and support your cats and dogs when you can love and support every animals. You don’t need to turn a blind eye to cruelty.
You are strong, you have a mind that can think and process information, use it. Go vegan and make a difference.

One Direction star Niall Horan has reportedly signed a huge solo record deal, but it’s not with Syco boss Simon Cowell .
The 22-year-old, who has been exploring his golf business since the band went on a hiatus, has now reportedly followed in the footsteps of his bandmates Liam Payne and Harry Styles by inking a mega bucks deal.
An insider has claimed that Niall has landed a deal with Universal Music, who targeted him after their deal fell through with Harry.
“This will come as a real blow to Cowell who has been talking to Niall for months, wanting him to sign a deal with his label Syco,” a source told Daily Star Sunday.
“He made a number of big money offers to try and persuade Niall to sign up but, in the end, Universal came in and put even more money on the table. They’re chuffed to have got one over on Cowell and have taken one of 1D.”
Universal have reportedly been impressed by Niall’s solo efforts and were willing to fork out ‘whatever it took’ to seal the deal.
Niall is said to be “thrilled” at signing a solo deal, but it was only a matter of weeks ago that Cowell, 56, revealed he was hoping to make an announcement about Niall “soon”.
“I think they’re all gonna do great. Niall is the most loyal. We are expecting to announce something soon with him. I’ve always known he’s loyal,” Simon told People.
The X Factor boss “You know what, we’re talking to all of [the 1D guys] at the moment. You know what the great thing about these boys are, well not all of them, just most of them, they’re incredibly loyal. And you don’t always expect that. Niall, Harry, Louis are amazing.”
Meanwhile Niall has reportedly been “telling pals he is really excited about his new music and this solo deal”.
A representative from Syco has declined to comment on this story.
