not the rims people

no but people who don’t like pacific rim because it wasn’t logical or scientifically accurate like

yes

we know

we don’t care

it is an homage to that genre. the original godzilla was a dude clearly in a rubber suit stomping cardboard tokyo and we were supposed to just accept that. pacific rim is a movie where a government council sat around like “what are we gonna do about these giant aliens coming from the ocean?”

“let’s build equally giant robots to punch them in the face”

“yes perfect” and like, that was of course the logical response because it’s friggin cool

mako didn’t use the sword because she had to wait until the perfect cinematic moment to do so

this movie is a love letter to painfully dumb action movies, but it is also one of the smartest movies i’ve ever seen. it’s just telling a story in a different way. instead of having audience vehicle main character explain everything to us, the movie shows you a world and asks you to accept its premise, and then lets you discover the story yourself.

this movie glorifies platonic love and familial bonds, this movie is about how we as people are stronger together, that it’s not one lone hero guy who can save the world, but the unity of all of us. it’s about the sheer unmitigated gall of humanity- “fuck this noise, we’re canceling the apocalypse!” it’s about the stupid dumb loud optimism that looks at the world and wants it to better, demands it be better, and does so with fists of steel.

it’s bombast and noise and i love it to bits so shut up and sit down and let me enjoy my giant robots punching giant monsters in the face okay?

“It’s really about trying to tell the story with something else than the screenplay and the dialogue. When you’re dealing with a genre movie and you’re working with types, you need to deal with them and tell the story in a very simplified and very effective manner. And I try to do it with design, gestures and colours. These things are the things that I lay down in every movie and I hope people notice that they’re there.” - Guillermo del Toro

@miraculousfluffmonth day 31: I’m yours, forever

“Forever?”

“Forever.”

(And they lived happily ever after)

Anyway this month was super fun but I think the most important lesson I learned is that art takes up a lot of time if you let it lol. But again, all in good fun!

to be honest, i am never going to not love fury road. and i am never going to not love fury road for the exact same reason that i am never going to not love pacific rim: because they are movies that focus uncompromisingly on women and on the stories of women and do not pick at them or highlight their flaws or put them in conflict with other women so that the dudebros in the corner can yell “catfight!” and whistle.

pacific rim doesn’t pass the bechdel test of course, but it is still a movie where i can very readily believe that guillermo del toro asked somebody “do we really need a mildly attractive white boy who isn’t portayed as a sack of shit for the majority of the movie as a protagonist?” and some stuffy hollywood exec informed him that he had to have at least one so he sighed and picked charlie hunnam out of a lineup and informed him that his job was to stand there and look pretty with his shirt off and smile adoringly at rinko kikuchi whenever she was onscreen, which he did fantastically. also idris elba and a narrative centered around a found family featuring a black father and a japanese daughter that culminates in the kind of love so profound that the last words she says to him don’t even need to be translated for a non-japanese-speaking audience.

fury road is a movie that was edited by a woman because george miller literally did not fucking trust a man to do it justice, and even our beloved sad puppy protaganist still has his moment where we all yell at him to just let furiosa and the girls in the truck you miserable bastard you all want the same thing and then they turn an MRA into a feminist willing to die for the cause, and they put naked women on the screen without making me want to curl up inside and die, and killed women to show us how that made other women feel, and brought literal fucking hellfire down on the patriarchy to grind them into rubble. also, ALSO, the only reason this ridiculous fucking plan even worked in the end was because LITERAL CHILDREN and enslaved women lowered the platform and opened the floodgates to water, which is essentially the same as salvation when you live in a post-nuclear desert hellscape run by god-kings who waste thousands of gallons of gasoline just to track down their escaped sex slaves. also actual polynesian actresses in a movie set in australia. also a complete lack of rape scene or discussion of sex, crude or otherwise. also the person who everybody knows is the protag of fury road in the same way everyone knows mako is the protag of pacific rim even though the trailers will do their best to convince the MRAs otherwise is an amputee driven by the same immense boiler of screaming fury that i, as an abuse victim and as a feminist and as someone who has had friends go through way worse shit than i did, feel on a regular basis, and we don’t need to know the full story of what happened; we know that she was kidnapped, we know her mother is dead, we know that it’s probably been twenty years of literal hell for her, and we know that she is not above dying to save four girls who yell at her when she tries to kill someone that has been sent to bring them back to immortan joe.

this is not the wink wink nudge nudge feminism of joss “i quit twitter bc feminists were harassing me” whedon. these are movies that make me feel like they are opening floodgates to stories where megan fox can show up onscreen and be taken seriously instead of objectified, and lucy liu can play any damn character she wants in reboots of stories that used to just be about arrogant white boys, and laverne cox doesn’t have to be asked what her fucking crotch looks like before people can hold a conversation with her.

pacific rim and fury road, as colorful (literally, there is an entire post on this site about modern hollywood and it’s shitty, drained-of-color-to-feel-”gritty” movies) narratives about hope and love, actually make me, a decrepit, sarcastic husk of a human being, 1) cry about two people nodding at each other and touching foreheads, and 2) actually believe that our cinema will one day stop being such a white sausagefest.

movies that can do that are a big deal.

SW Pacific Rim AU (Kylux-centric): “The Resistance” is the last Shatterdome left standing in the struggle of humanity against the monsters of the deep; Kaijus. Marshall Leia Organa knows they’re the last hope and they will not surrender. She and her second in command, Hux, command the last talented pilots who have left. The skilful trio: Poe, Finn and Rey are the stars, their Jaeger of three. But they can not fight alone, forcing them to have to call the veteran pilots Han and Chewbacca. In the attack the monsters have become stronger and injured Solo. His son, Ben Solo (or better known on the base as Kylo Ren) is determined to fulfill his destiny, Kylo has the highest scores in the physical and mental tests, but his instability has made it incompatible with many applicants to be his co-pilot. Kylo is willing to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker who when his co-pilot Obi wan Kenobi crashed, his pride forced him to fly alone and destroy his body forcing him to wear a suit to keep him alive. Ren is willing to risk everything, but Leia will make a desperate move; she knows that Hux was an exceptional pilot with Phasma, although she died in one of the attacks years ago. She proposes them to challenge the drift compatible (and despite their rivalry) they manage to synchronize and be the new pilots of the “Starkiller”.

Welcome to the PacificWatch!AU \o/

1 / 2 / 3

I’m not the only one in on this - there’s a whole discord server dedicated to this AU haha, but basically it’s a mixture of Pacific Rim with the characters from Overwatch. And the main people we focus on is Gabriel/Reaper and Jack/Solder76.

They pilot a Jaeger together and during a battle they have an argument that breaks the bridge of the drift and they fall into the ocean. Jack resurfaces and Gabe falls into the Kaiju’s freshly dead body - getting super contaminated and deformed.

This is the reunion after Gabe finally comes back up and wrecks his way through the coast in search of Jack ;w;

A friend of mine actually wrote a wonderful little ficlet with this reunion, you should totally go read it~ http://archiveofourown.org/works/10590681

STOP CRYING ABOUT JOHN BOYEGA’S DANCING THING.

I don’t care about what another person or persons do.

It’s obviously consensual or that girl wouldn’t be doing that type of dance with him.

John Boyega and some girl grinding away in a Caribbean festival dance doesn’t mean shit.

It doesn’t matter to me if you’re a feminist or white or black or a celebrity or just an average person; He’s not degrading anyone, nobody did anything wrong.

I don’t care if it was Oscar Isaac or Mark Hamill or Daisy Ridley dancing in his place, it is a consensual mutual, albeit rather sexual, type dance between two adults. Nothing Wrong.

NOBODY DID ANYTHING WRONG IN THAT VIDEO.

STOP BEING OFFENDED FOR SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING!

It’s not a dance I would be personally comfortable enough to do, but that doesn’t mean it offends me and shouldn’t offend anyone else.

Unlike Godzilla, Pacific Rim doesn’t try to be serious even when it’s being serious. Characters have names like Stacker Pentecost and Hercules Hansen. The film requires you to believe that the best way to battle a giant monster is to build an even larger robot to fight that monster.

Much of the Act 2 drama derives from inter-pilot tension airlifted from the Val Kilmer scenes in Top Gun. It’s the polar opposite of the Godzilla school of drama, where everyone is a total professional who has absolutely no personal goal besides Saving The World. In Pacific Rim, Idris Elba is Rinko Kikuchi’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, and two of the last Giant Robot-pilots in the world frequently get into sneering fights over who’s the bigger badass, and Charlie Day is a scientist.

So, for all these reasons, Pacific Rim is a movie that I’ve heard perfectly smart people describe as “stupid” or “silly.” The problem with this line of thinking is that, really, that every blockbuster is pretty “silly,” in the context of Things Adults Should Care About. Godzilla is not less stupid than Pacific Rim just because people frown more. […]

The difference, I think, is that Pacific Rim glories in its own silliness. There’s a flashback scene where Idris Elba rescues a little girl, and when he emerges from his giant robot, the sun shines upon him like he’s the catharsis in a biblical epic. There’s a moment when one giant robot swings an oil tanker like a sword. Then it grows a sword out of its wrist. Then it falls from space to earth.

There are real complaints to make about Pacific Rim, I guess, all of them fair and most of them pedantic. I know a lot of people who have issues with the story. (“Why didn’t they use the wrist-sword earlier?” is a popular one.) Conversely, I don’t really know anyone who minds the story in Godzilla, possibly because everything stupid that happens is prefaced by Frowning Watanabe saying “This is why the stupid thing that’s about to happen makes sense.” Godzilla wants so badly to make sense. Pacific Rim wants so badly for Ron Perlman to wear golden shoes.

okay but pacific rim is a really fucking great film and i hate the derision with which people are comparing it to the shape of water, crimson peak, and pan’s labyrinth

if you don’t understand that pacific rim is a film about love as much as it is a film about mecha punching kaiju, then maybe you’re not very good at understanding films

if you don’t understand what it’s trying to do then maybe 👏 it’s 👏 not 👏 for 👏 you

people dismissing pacific rim as a “popcorn movie” makes me so angry because that’s just… wrong and frankly ignorant of them

I learned something new tonight.

1. You can drive up to a mile on your rims without ruining them.

2. Let people help you.

Why are we so willing to help others, yet reluctant to ask for help.

My sweet parents drove down 20 minutes to where I was stranded, took me to the closest restaurant (In-and- Out yummy) so I could use the bathroom AND bought me a cheeseburger, so I wouldn’t be hungry while I waited the hour and forty-five minutes for roadside assistance to fix my tire.

I am grateful they did because there aren’t bushes available on the freeway for girls dying to hide behind. 😱 I am grateful for all those who made my night easier.

“Toner, serum, moisturizer, then sheet mask?”

“Doesn’t it go toner, serum, mask, and then moisturizer?”

You glance down to see Hoseok squinting at the item in question as though it holds the key to the universe of glowing skin. The bathroom of his one-bedroom apartment is fairly cramped, with hardly enough space for a fully grown man and his stack of frog-print towels which he insists on keeping piled in the corner, but you make do with the limited room by standing between his legs as he perches atop the bathtub rim.

“I’m pretty sure Jin said to use the mask first,” he muses almost to himself, “But then we’d have to wait too long for the essence to dry before putting on the cream…”

“You know what, it probably doesn’t matter,” you point out kindly, readjusting the clips holding back your bangs. “It’s all being slathered on the same place.”

He takes one final look at the instructions before pulling away. “Yeah, you’re right,” he decides, shaking his head. A flop of hair falls into his eyes and he absentmindedly pushes it back. Unlike your hairpins, Hoseok’s choice of accessory is a black headband, positioned carefully over his head to reveal an expanse of skin for the lotion’s taking. You can’t help but feel the warm rush of satisfaction (and perhaps the slightest hint of envy) at the sight of it. Jung Hoseok’s forehead, as is the rest of his glorious self, is simply too spectacular to put into words. “Jin’ll complain that I messed up his perfect routine again, but that’s okay. I’m pretty sure he just makes it up as he goes, anyway.”

Hey Holly! When you color your sketches with that marker (I don't know what it's called but you've used it in some videos) how do you know which parts to color and which to not? Do you not color the highlights? And the rest are shadows? Or do you not color the shadows?

Uhhhh it has to do with lighting, I dont always use marker for lighting, sometimes I just color it cause it looks cool but with lighting theres a couple things you have to keep in mind.

Lighting changes the look of a face and the mood of a drawing, generally the lighting most people use is Top, Bottom, Side, Front and Rim lighting. Back lighting is kind of unusual.

basically do studies of objects/people and move a light around them, eventually youll be able to kind of guess where the shadows will hit on a drawing.

Tip: Dont use top and side lighting at once.
