not sam and dean though

The future - and it is showing us this loud and clear

This episode was amazing. After flailing and basically shouting all day I am so happy and so excited that I joined tumblr - the quality of posts today has been excellent, both humorous and inciteful and I LOVE YOU ALL :)

I hope its ok I’m going to tag a few great posts in this to reference as I don’t want to go over stuff other people have already meta-d about so excellently!

This episode, titled the future, seems to me to be Dabb basically telling us what he wants for the next part of the show, the “better way” that he wants to take it.

So here are my main bullet points that I will expand on a little below and link those excellent posts to where relevant:

A. Sam

Sam is clearly portrayed again, recurrently as the researcher, the “brains” of the operation (before you say ‘Dean is so clever though!’ I’m just pointing out Sam’s love of the scholarly side of things and how this is where he fits). Sam’s endgame must now be to head up the MoL/hunter network in this respect.

B. Sam and Dean

They work so well as a team here, Sam putting a tracker in Cas’s phone while he’s distracted by Dean, researching v whatever Dean was doing (maybe making a pining mixtape along the lines of “all by myself” and “I miss you” “please come home”, BUT they are shown as different people, with different interests, skills and relationships - with Cas for example, & not codependent. Again hammering this home in this episode. THANK YOU DABB, GLYNN & BERENS.

C. THE RECURRING AND CONSISTENT NARRATIVE OF DESTIEL.

This whole episode is one big love fest. We went from one ‘wow I can’t believe they just did that!’ to the next to the next with hardly enough time for us to catch out breath! WHAT WAS THIS EPISODE?!

OK, so we have :

1. My Romeo & Juliet / Gaze up Trope Balcony Meta.

2. The Mixtape Meta, another EXPLICIT romantic trope by @drsilverfish.

3. The Dean “keep it” parallels, the first one that came to my mind was Arwen (another human+ / eternal being who decided to relinquish immortality couple):

Aragon: this belongs to you.
Arwen: keep it, it was a gift… it is mine to give to whom I will, like my heart.

But also all the other ‘gift’ tropes, the standard romantic trope that when a couple breaks up you return the gifts…. I think Cas wasn’t sure he was going to be forgiven, after Dean’s outburst in the war room, so he goes to return the cassette, but Dean does forgive him nearly instantaneously, which actually makes it even worse that he has to steal the colt straight after…

5. The difference between Sastiel and Destiel again emphasised, more and more this season. I don’t think I even have to detail this, just, basically the whole episode shows this.

6. This magnificent gifset by @magnificent-winged-beast which shows the difference between Dean’s angst at actually watching the colt get destroyed and the potential killing of Cas…

Slight aside - Performing!Dean.

This magnificent gifset that shows Dean’s facade coming down, he doesn’t even attempt to make it sound less ‘gay’ when he tells Sam that Cas came to his room, played him and took the colt from his secret hiding place under his pillow, he even looks down before he says it like he KNOWS how it is going to sound but says it anyway.

source: @yourfavoritedirector.

And Sam doesn’t even flinch. YES THANK YOU DABB, GLYNN & BERENS!

4. SO…WHY is Dean still doing everything he did for Cas during this episode and still defending him to Sam even though he appeared pissed and Cas repeatedly betrayed him?

Well, in 12x12 Cas said “I love you”, clearly understood by Dean (and Sam to be directed at Dean). There was no real reciprocation though from Dean, other than Dean family-zoning him and Sam’s fantastic “we are doing this for you, Cas”.

So regarding Dean, Cas is hurt and believes it isn’t reciprocated. Now Dean is pissed and still using the WE card at every turn, so what is a celestial being to do? Cas assumes this is the end, that there is no hope, he returns the mixed tape. BUT Dean says no keep it, this is NOT the end.

Cas understands that this is therefore not the end, but it is complicated. He explains that he wanted to “come back with a win for you…. for myself”. He wants this for Dean and for himself, this is very important, everything he is doing now and in the future is NOT all about Dean, there is his own agency and morality involved here too.

For Cas, when it comes to it, he wants this reciprocation of his love of course, but right now he has bigger fish to fry and really he wants to protect Sam and Dean and save the world

Now, going back to the “what the hell is wrong with you man?” followed by an awkward silence…. and where Cas then goes to return the gift. Yes, Cas feels that he has said his piece in 12x12 and is rebuffed, but meanwhile Dean is struggling with what Cas has said and everything else that is going on. He has a lot on his plate, not only Cas but his own personal history, his deep seated issues that he is clearly working on this season (see all the performing!Dean facade crumbling meta going around), his issues around his mother, the BMoL, Lucifer, the nephilim…. I mean that is a lot for an emotionally healthy person let a lone DEAN WINCHESTER.

Dean is trying to say / show how he feels he’s just rubbish at it, but he’s getting better!

“We?” “Yes dumbass, WE.” This is his forgiveness. And it is betrayed just moments later. But does this stop him trusting Cas again? NO.

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. For their dynamic, to show that they still do ultimately trust each other.

EVEN AFTER EVERYTHING DEAN STILL DEFENDS CAS TO SAM!

Oh, and I just need to add how desperate I am for Sam to turn to Dean soon and just say “No, Dean, this is between you and Cas, stop bringing me into this”. PLEASE I SWEAR I WILL BE GOOD! I mean, how repeated, consistent and out of place it was (I mean, not only to shippers, I think anyone would think it was out of place the way it was portrayed in their personal conversation in Dean’s room) - this has got to be addressed, no?!

 5. A better way

So. What does this mean moving forwards?

Well, firstly, I have moved from being 85% sure Destiel would be endgame to about 95% sure. Lets be real. This episode cements this. Whether you like it or not, it’s happening.

So, what is the better way?

Overall, it seems that Dabb wants to move things forwards. And his key points all season are Free Will, breaking from past repressions and negative influences, moving forwards with what the characters choose and want for their endgame and for sure now endgame Destiel.

I have in the past speculated about quite a lot of stuff, some right and some… still to be seen and some not right, but the overall arc speculation that I saw foreshadowed since early season 12 is RIGHT ON TRACK.

Now, the question is will Dabb go backwards and go to the old, standard SPN ways where probably Dean and Cas will be separated, Cas will be wrong again in his trust in the nephilim - it WILL be evil (rehash of s6 and s8) and he will need to be ‘broken’ from the mind control by Dean in a stronger crypt scene etc etc etc.

Or will he move forwards, onto a “better way”? Will we get another s11 ‘happy ending’? Where it appears all good but there is still stuff going on behind the scenes for s13… Or maybe a not so happy ending but that ultimately will be resolved happily?

Maybe the baby has it’s grace removed (so glad this is an option it was driving me insane that they hadn’t mentioned it by now!) OR it’s not evil at all! it’s the ANTI-anti-Christ, it chose Cas because he is Lucifer’s mirror in that he LOVES Humanity. I mean, the whole point of the show is agency, free will and not being forced to follow the result of your parentage / past ….especially this season with Sam and Dean’s arcs….

Maybe human!Cas, potential hunter Daddies, Cas staying at home calling Dean while he’s out on MOTW hunts with Sam being all “Dean there’s poop everywhere, I’m sorry it got on your favourite shirt, but please please come home this is so hard!” “OK babe, don’t worry, we’ll be back tomorrow, the case was a milk run!” when actually Dean nearly died and Sammy saved the day and…. etc because really? what are we supposed to think from that motel scene? With Cas smiling all cute and using the world “righteous” when talking about the kids future guardian?! (and Kelly survives if we are going to be extra nice).

Maybe Lucifer will die / be dealt with and it is the MoL that are the big bad next year…..aiding the overall future arc of TFW as leaders of the MoL/Hunter collaboration (Chuck I hope so).

Or will it be a mix of the two?

Well my money is on that it will be a mix….

DABB IS SHOWING US THE FUTURE Y’ALL. AND THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT.

One more thing I love about 12x19 is that it amplified that Cas’ arc is not just about Sam and Dean, even though it once again was about Cas doing everything to save them.

By now, Cas knows that he is welcome in the bunker and in the winchester’s lives. Dean has told him repeatedly that he is worried about him when he is gone. He has his own room and he knows he can always come back, even if Dean can be expected to be angry with him. (”I’m not angry. I’m worried.” and “We are fighting. We’re fighting for you.”)

Yet, he still thinks he has to protect the Winchesters at all costs, those costs including his relationship with them and his own live.

To know why one only has to look as far as these two quotes:

“I just keep failing again and again. When you were taken, I searched for months and I couldn’t find you. And I just wanted - I needed to come back here with a win for you and for myself.”

and

“I am not someone you should put your faith in.”

Cas lacks faith in himself. He has failed so many times now that he is desperate to prove to himself that his very existence is still warranted.

Cas has no problem with his faith in Dean and Sam and by now, I think he even knows what he didn’t at the start of the season, that they love him for himself, not for what he can do for them. The problem now is that he does not think he deserves that love. He has to prove that to himself - and to them.

Yes, Cas’ depression arc is still not over, but this time he at least knows that there are people who love him unconditionally, which makes this journey solely his own.

He has to find his own worth again to find his place in the world.

Which brings me to this conclusion: Thank you, Andrew Dabb (and Bobo Berrens and Meredith Glynn), for giving Cas a story arc that does not stand and fall with the Winchesters.

I feel like there must have been a time, somewhere in the past decade, that Sam and Dean ended up doing rock paper scissors and then when they were about to throw, Dean whipped out the finger guns while Sam threw rock and then just smirked and said, “Colt—dusts anything,” all proud of himself.

And then somehow the game evolved and eventually they ended up playing Rock-Paper-Scissors-Colt-Lucifer-Sam Fucking Winchester or something. And obviously Lucifer trumps the Colt and but Sam Fucking Winchester overpowers Lucifer, so. And then eventually it’d just get way out of hand and they’d have to go back to the good old-fashioned way, but that wouldn’t keep either of them from throwing some random-ass thing every once in a while, just for kicks.

Many of you have pointed out that Dean sounds like a nagging wife and they bicker like a married couple. I completely agree.

But I also noticed something else. The camera work as soon as Cas enters. Notice that before this scene the camera was on both Sam AND Dean. When Sam spoke, the camera zoomed in on him and when Dean spoke the camera zoomed in on Dean.

But as soon as Cas enters the scene, the camera shifts the whole of its focus to Cas and Dean. Notice in the first GIF, Sam is speaking and yet the camera goes to Dean for a reaction shot. And in the fourth GIF, even though both Sam and Dean are in the frame, the camera focuses on Dean and appears blurry on Sam. As soon as Cas enters, the whole thing turns into an intense focused scene between Dean and Castiel, almost like they want us to think of a long lost couple reuniting when we see it.

And we are supposed to think that Destiel was not intended by anyone. Seriously?

This is really funny to me because this is probably a conversation Sam and Dean had many times over the years when Sam tries to convince Dean to eat healthy stuff and Dean’s like, “No way. Too much fiber is bad for you”.

And here, Sam can’t help but rub it in Dean’s face even though they are on a job. And Dean’s face is like the best part.

Why couldn’t you have left well enough alone? You were happy.
2.20 // What Is and What Should Never Be

When you suddenly get dean feels even though you’re a hard core Sam!girl???

3

Impala mugs. “Got Salt?” T-shirts. Supernatural posters as tall as Sam.

You were at a convention about your life, unnervingly accurate copies of you and the boys everywhere you looked, and nothing had ever freaked you out more. Though watching Sam and Dean squirm might just be worth powering through any potential embarrassment suffered on your part.

You pried your eyes away from the dumbfounded Winchesters when a squeaky-voiced girl appeared in front of you.

“Oh. My. Gosh. Your costumes are amazing, you guys look just like them!” You took a step back from the flannel-clad girl, watching as she walked up to the younger Winchester with an awe-struck look on her face. “He’s even the right height to be Sam!”

The shaggy-haired hunter scrunched up his face, clearly at a loss for words, though the girl seemed to get tired of him quickly enough and promptly turned her attention on you.

“And you guys make an awesome Dean and Y/N!” She clasped her hands in front of her chest, a wide grin spreading across her face. Then she leaned in with a conspiratorial smile. “I ship you two together, you know.”

If you’d had a drink you would have spit it out. Dean simply looked confused.

“You what us?” he asked, screwing up his face in confusion.

“I ship you!” she said excitedly. “You know, like a relationship? I think Y/N and Dean are just perfect for each other. And I know they both feel the same way, they just need to get over themselves and accept how they really feel!”

This time Dean understood her perfectly, if his mouth hanging open and the light flush spreading over his cheeks was any indication. You cast an exploratory look in his direction, smiling nervously at the eldest Winchester.

“Come on,” he said as he grabbed your hand, dragging you away from the girl and his brother. “I think we have some things to talk about.

You happily let him lead you away, out to the parking lot and to his beloved Impala.

Maybe these conventions weren’t so bad after all.

“Sammy?” Dean’s long hair is starting to curl as he sweats, and Sam tries not to think about how it would feel wrapped around his hand as he pulled it.

This is too fucked up. Too weird. And they will just have to find another way.

“I know, Dean.”

Seven Things About Supernatural: 12x12 - “Stuck In The Middle (With You)”

Okay, I joked about how concerned I was about having to write Thirty-Five Things About Supernatural because of the multiple PoV action, but now that I’ve seen the ep?  Y’all, we’re all going to be writing about this for a decade.  There is no way I can say everything I have to say in one post.  Pressure = gone.  Let’s do this.

  1. Supernatural as a show excels at the Concept Episode – like, it’s literally a signature thing that the show does – but sweet cuppin’ cakes, this ep is on a par with some of the bigger things Robbie Thompson was doing before his departure.  Davy Perez and Richard Speight Jr. fucking knocked my socks off so hard I no longer have socks.  Some of that is the joyful lack of restraint in bringing the Tarantino cliches, but they’re also doing it with a solid, substantial bit of story that has implications up and down the timeline.
  2. NEW LORE NEW LORE NEW LORE.  And it’s the good stuff, too.  The Princes of Hell are another Ancient Big Bad in the vein of Cain, but still recently active enough via Azazel that it’s not like, “HEY!  SURPRISE!”

Plus, great shock factor for the characters AND the audience when Ramiel’s eyes go yellow.

Ramiel, like Azazel, appears in the Book of Enoch as a fallen angel.  Dagon is mentioned in Biblical literature as a deity among the Philistines, and is attested as early as the Bronze age (for those of us Watching While Pagan).  Asmodeus has a long pedigree as a demonic force – he’s a baddie in the Book of Tobit, for example – and is the only one of the four to also be among the seven classic Crown Princes of Hell in the Sixteenth Century stuff, which seems to be a frequent aesthetic influence on SPN generally.

This ep didn’t just leave the door open for Asmodeus and Dagon to join the party.  It handed them an engraved invitation with Kelly Kline and the Winchesters’ names on it.
  3. OKAY, BUT THE CROWLEY STUFF.  For an episode that I mostly failed to realize before air was a Crowley episode, there is a ton of character stuff happening with him here.

Gaining the crown, for example, more or less at the pleasure of the Princes?  It makes a lot of sense, and especially helps drive home how tenuous his position is.  It also clarifies a little how he came to a position that he does not love in its particulars, but clings to because the only thing worse than having it is not having it.

Which, given that Ramiel just got Winchestered on his watch, is a real possibility if Dagon and Asmodeus decide to get involved.  Which, given that Dagon is already interested in Kelly…well, there’s a reason Crowley wants the Colt back.  He broke the OTHER tool he’d need to do the job to save Cas.

(Cas who is “not a friend.”  Right, Crowley.  Yeah, there’s strategic value in keeping him around and the Winchesters happy/in your debt, but with two angry Princes, breaking Michael’s Lance is basically gambling with your life, and you don’t do that for someone you don’t have some attachment to.)

We also see that he’s rebuilding his position in Hell, and is at least making some attempt to put right his humiliation at Lucifer’s hands by turning the tables.  Which, given that this is Lucifer we’re talking about…well, I have concerns.  Especially because Crowley’s luck rarely runs smooth.
  4. But hey, Lucifer’s in a cage right now.  That’s good, right?  I mean, he’s probably not going to stay in there, because Lucifer is the dickest of dicks, and that whole Nephilim thing is going to come bite us all in the ass soon, but hey.  I’ll take it.
  5. So.  Mary.  Mary is in the process of learning (the hard way, and at great risk to herself and others) that Unilateral Choices Involving Secretive Deals With Douchebags is not the way to secure the greater good.  In fact, she’s sort of finding herself in Cas’ position from back in S6.  It’s a colossal breach of trust, which she struggles with in the final confrontation with Ramiel.

And, like Cas, she opts to press on in the belief that she can handle it, that her stab at this is going to be worth the hazard, that the ends are going to justify the means if she can hold out long enough.
  6. So just in case anybody missed it:

    A) Cas is family, both in Cas’ mind and on the Winchesters’ side.
    B) As in Sam and Dean won’t leave his side even though an Azazel-level baddie is getting ready to eject them from his barn.
    C) Mary even called him one of her boys.
    D) “I love you. I love all of you.”

Please excuse me while I weep openly.
  7. Okay, but did any of us expect Wally to survive this episode?  Because honestly, the lineup here was like a classic Star Trek away team, with four Named and Knowns accompanied by That Other Poor Bastard Who Isn’t Coming Home™.

Like, I took one look at the promo shots and was like, “there is no prayer circle big enough to save this man.”

    Poor Wally.

Bonus Thing:
I liked Mandy.  A lot.  She was snarky and she probably smelled delicious.  But I do have questions about why Cas didn’t spot her as a demon in the cafe.  I mean, I suppose it’s possible she’s not a meatsuit full-time, but it’s more usual for demons to stick around in the bodies they’ve claimed, and it makes a ton of sense for Crowley to have informants posted in the area around Ramiel’s farm so that he can help manage his end of the deal.  But yeah, if there’s a complaint to be made about this episode, this is mine.  Oh hey, never mind.  The demon I mistook for Mandy is actually Ronnie, who is played by an entirely different person. Mandy probably still smells delicious, and not at all like sulfur.

Bonus Thing #2:
OKAY BUT THE COLT.   THE COLT IS BACK.  THE COLT.  THE COLT THE COLT THE COLT.  So that’s neat.  Question, though: what’s with the lighting in the box?  Is the box illuminated?  Is the lighting diegetic (i.e. a real thing in the story world) or are we just having Pulp Fiction fun?  Time to tweet Davy Perez…
