not outspoken

zen with a normally reserved s/o who after being away for a couple of days greets him with a kiss on his mouthplate and a tender hug

You practically thrummed with excitement as you made your way home, eager to see your boyfriend again. A smile threatened to spread across your face despite how unlikely it was.

You opened the door and you heard the chime of his Orbs coming closer, as soon as you saw him you just rushed forward with your arms outstretched.

You pressed your lips against his mouth plate and he gave a small noise of surprise. Your nose nuzzled against the metal and your arms slid around his back. Your hands tenderly pulled him close, revelling in his closeness.

“What brought this on?” he asked, returning the hug eagerly but was confused by your outspoken affection.

“I missed you,” your voice was soft and he just pulled you closer, giving you the affection you missed.

i’m just really so very thankful to Katie. god she’s made me cry, for a much better reason than the rest of them did the last two days.

even though she wasn’t completely in a outspoken rage, cuz.. professional adult human person. i do wanna believe she did chat with them abt the affects they caused during that mtv interview. it seemed from that one clip floating around she did try talk with jeremy POSSIBLY. and now, this is definitely 100% assumption. but after that mtv one, all the other interviews looked like there was a tension? that tv line one was most visibly telling with katie. while on the couch, sitting as far away as possible, her shutting down what chris said earlier and bringing up the singing thing (”i brought it back to reality, do you guys want to start singing again?”) and Odette seemingly giving support towards Katie with the shoulder touch.

she’s been so so supportive to the people she’s met who’ve brought up supercorp. she’s always been outspoken in believing we can interpret things how we like since day one. and interviews after she just seemed very done. you can just feel her love for her fans and how valid and important they are to her, and her career tbh. she seems highly aware and respectful of fans and fandom type stuff. i mean, she’s a nerd of course.

like i know people on the outside want to believe we’re all disappointed and angry bcuz some people yelled how a ship won’t be canon. but it was really above that. it was that they mocked lgbt people for wanting to find representation and happiness in a pairing. katie is one that would understand that, from her multiple lgbt roles and an understanding of fans/fandom.

i just love katie so much and i hope someone will tell her how much of what she did, after what the rest of the cast did, helped people. it honestly lifted a little weight of my heavy heart.

It’s day one of Gemsona Week 2017! To kick things off, I’m doing the Famethyst Prompt for my Lapis Lazuli. These are Lapis’ fellow former Lapis Lazulis under White Diamond’s leadership before he rebelled.

Chest Lapis/”Chester”: Condescending, know-it-all Lapis, leader of the group.

Forehead Lapis/”Forrest”: Quiet, intelligent follower. Heavily dislikes Chester.

Shoulder Lapis/”Sherry”: Elegant, snobby, outspoken. Previously in a one-sided romance with Lapis before hating him as a rebel.

Gemsona Week 2017

Prompts for GW 2017

A concept:
A group of high schoolers go exploring on bikes after school lets out. They find a place that seems like any old abandoned site on the outside, but once they’re inside, they find out that they’ve managed to step through a portal that brings them to a place with loads of junk and a few broken magical items. Inside they uncover a mirror, in which a girl is trapped on the other side. The group makes it their mission to find out who trapped the girl and why. In the end, it’s an member of an inorganic alien race, and out of anger and spite, the main antagonist traps the most outspoken member behind the mirror as well. Grief-stricken, one of the friends in the group ends up taking home the mirror and keeping it in their old treehouse away from their snooping parents. This friend has feelings for the leader trapped in the mirror, and is heartbroken when they find that the leader, oblivious to their friend’s feelings towards them has taken to the girl in the mirror. Out of jealousy, the friend tosses the mirror when they witness the leader counseling the girl in the mirror, who is struck with guilt about getting someone else trapped. The mirror cracks, and the pair in the mirror find their way out. Slowly, the girl begins to open up about her past, and how she got into the situation. The group learns that she also possesses the power of Reanimation.

1st House - your Ascendant, your worldwide persona

Aries Ascendant - outspoken and very sensitive. They are called warriors of the zodiac and for a good reason. They always fight to the end for the cause they believe in and will do everything what it takes to win (literally). They are really smart and inventive. They like to instigate things and cause drama. They never take your advices. Honest and stubborn. They tend to take things to their heart (except advices) and they easily get offended. They crave romance and true love but they are way more shy about those things than people think. They really can get shy in love! But they want to be always considered strong so it is hard to see that side of them. They have a tendency to delete people from their life too fast, without giving it a second thought. Strong minded. Helpful. Sassy. They easily get jealous of others.

Taurus Ascendant - protective and sexy. Their presence is not that intense like Scorpio but still they are visible and hard to miss. Very sensual people. Their sexiness is more subtle and their beauty is very earthy like. They go back and forth with being economical and  impulsive with spending money (they might buy things they think they need when they really don’t). They are argumentative and tend to instigate things. They are really protective of their surrendings and people. Generous with their time and money unless you make them doubt your intentions. They can be very cold, calculative and emotionally detached when they need to be.

Gemini Ascendant - funny and welcoming. They are very warm and always make people feel good with them. They will help you with opening up. They can be flighty and overly dramatic. Emotional people. They love diversity in every form. They love to learn new things and help other learn it too. Very helpful, they really want you to feel good around them. They do not want to negativity win over positivity. They can find hope and good in people everywhere. This does not mean that they are naive, no - they are very observant people and very smart. They need a lot of changes in their life. Freedom is their stability. They despise routine but they need it a little bit more in their life to keep their restlessness away from them.

Cancer Ascendant -  caring and proactive. They get things done. They are very emotionally and mentally strong. They really can get through a lot and stand still. Patient and caring, they treat their friends as their family members. They will always make sure that you will know how much they love you. They have good intuition and are people smart. They are creative and may appear more innocent that they really are. They will always encourage you to be better. They are very hard-working, they make sure to do things the best they can. Very goofy (when they feel comfortable with you). If you break their trust they will get very cold, logical and ruthless. They will call you out on the things you have done. They will never forget.

Leo Ascendant - generous and witty. Very loving and protective of their loved ones. The unique mix of softness and strength. The royal baby. They will rather die than let you win an argument. They tend to forget about their own worth and look for validation in the wrong places. They are very detail oriented about how they want to appear to the world (especially when it comes to their fashion choices). Creative, smart and devoted to their own art and style. They do not like changes and can be too much stubborn to admit that they need them. Very sensitive but they have amazing fighting spirit.

Virgo Ascendant - competent and charming. They are very sophisticated. Naturally smart, patient and observant. They have a lot of hidden charisma. They know how to act in social situations and keep their image clean. Creative. They are emotionally self-sufficent and they keep people at distance but they know how to appear friendly and welcoming. Other people may often come to them for their knowledge which they like to share. They usually have god complex and dislike when people act like they really know them. They like competent people. Meticulous and can be mean. They want to show the best of them to the world.

Libra Ascendant - thoughtful and intuitive. They care about justice and balance and they can easily sense when something is “off”. They are really good at finding solutions. Impartial, they look at two sides before judging. They are people smart and helpful. Emotionally strong but when things go wrong they rely more on logic than emotions. They can get cold and distant when they feel they cannot trust someone. Trust is really important for them. If you break your word to them they may forigve you but will never truly forget. They are stylish, aesthetically pleasing and easily make people like them. They can become the ultimate queen b. They get things done and they do not like to sit and wait for things to escalate.

Scorpio Ascendant - passionate and watchful. The infamous “mysterious and intense” ones. They definetely bring a lot to the table. They do not care much about others opinions but others tend to care about theirs. Beside the obvious sexiness, strong aura and intensity they have a lot of sensivity and thirst of knowledge inside of them. They like to discover secrets of the world and they are really good at it. They are careful and like to plan things. They observe people and rely on their instincts when judging them. They like to laugh with others and be more laid-back and goofy but only with those who gained their trust. They have strong convictions that they know how to defend. They are really caring and generous, they have this softness inside of them which they always choose not to show to the world. They are true fighters; they will not back down and run away from a fight but they really not aim to create everything into the battlefield. Ambitious, smart and really adventurous people.

Sagittarius Ascendant - jovial and intense. They have strong, warm aura that that attracts others to them. They are extra about every aspect of their life. Bold, independent and sometimes a little bit intimidating. They make a conscious effort to be funny (they prefer things be kept this way) but they can get serious very fast and when they do they become scary. They have short temper and sharp tongue. They will not tolerate any baloney. They will scream about it to the world if they have to. They will make a fuss about something but five seconds later they will act like nothing happened. They prefer to look at the bigger picture but still will check every little detail. They really do not know how to deal with sadness inside of them so they choose to ignore it and keep themselves busy on something “more interesting” than negative feelings.

Capricorn Ascendant - bold and confrontational. They do not back down from a challenge an actually are more drama prone that they will admit. They are passionate and very emotional but they do not show it easily to the world. They are diligent and prefer to keep the image of  professionalists. Independent, sassy, curious and smart, they know how to handle things. They despise incompetence but they are more forgiving if this incompetence come from other people and not themselves. They like affection and compliments especially about achievements, less looks. They are constantly misunderstood and people try to simplify them to being heartless workaholics but they are way more complex. They tend to be more confident when they got older, they need some time to asset themselves in the world but when they do they become ultimate bosses.

Aquarius Ascendant - serious but charming. They are a unique blend of a social butterfly and strong individualist. They like people and spending time with them but they also need a lot of solitude. They often feel outcasted because of their contrasted personality and are considered weird. They are not weird - they are just unapologetic about who they are and you have to deal with it, whether you like what you see or not. Aquarius will not change anything about themselves to make things easier (even when they crave to be understood they will stand still with who they are)They are very curious and have many interests. They need some time to really open up but when they do you can see their passionate, vulnerable and caring side. They really like and need affection. They are smart and blunt. They appreciate unconventional forms of romance.

Pisces Ascendant - smart and incomparable. People see them as this weird, sad guys, who do not comprehend a normal human language. This is not true - they are complex and have many sides to them to show to the world. They easily get inspired by everything around them. They think they know how to blend in but the truth is that somehow they always stand out. They are intelligent, have unique sense of humour and way of looking at the world. They are brave, can get very argumentative when someone is talking about things they are passionate about. They can be both very logical and emotional, serious and goofy, loud and quiet. They are never one thing, they could never choose to be one.

Anyway yes if you’re white and very outspoken about racism and race-related issues, especially in fandom, it should be written somewhere on your blog that you’re white. Cause when it’s about these issues, your voice doesn’t have the same weight as ours, and one shouldn’t be mistaken for the other. Not to mention that some of you end up thinking that you’re so much better than the other whites and somehow immune to racism, which is not the case lol, and sometimes you need to be put back in your lane. Which is difficult to do when we’re not sure if you’re white or not.

No seriously! The two people Louis collaborated with: a non white man with a degree in women studies and a woman part of the LGBTQ community. Both supporters of gay rights, women rights, with charity projects and, to not forget, incredibly talented and outspoken. I'm so proud of Louis! And you know what also says a lot? Not only that Louis chose them but they also chose Louis!! If Louis was the man his team wanted us to believe he was Steve and Bebe wouldn't have worked him and love him so much!

I think that there’s misunderstanding of what “homophobia” is in this whole discourse...

Both Jeremy and Melissa have been outspoken about their support for LGBT rights and LGBT people and for the most part, what they’ve done is good and they understand the general idea of what LGBT people go through in their life… focus on “general idea”.

So, no! They aren’t homophobes in the “grab your pitchforks” kinda way. To non-LGBT people they are the best allies ever and for the most part they come across as really good allies to our community.

The thing is, homophobia runs deeper than that!

Believing and supporting gay marriage and gay people does not stop you from having homophobic actions.

What happened yesterday was a clear act of straight ignorance. That’s what I call it, “straight ignorance”. I’m not going to call them “raging homophobes” because I honestly don’t think they are. What I do think is that their understanding of the LGBT community, although better than most straight people I know, it’s still lacking. They are ignorant and that ignorance shown through in that little jamming session they had.

What they did was homophobic and incredibly disrespectful to fans but the reason it’s being hard for them to understand WHY that was homophobic is because their understanding of homophobia stops at the point where no one was screaming slurs and being blatantly obvious with their homophobia.

They don’t understand that homophobia can shine through heteronormative thoughts which was what that was. If it had been a relationship between a man and a woman that was not canon, the response would be “you never know”.

So, to wrap up what I think… I don’t think Melissa and Jeremy are homophobes, specially not “raging homophobes” as I’ve seen some people call them. I do think they are ignorant straight people who had an homophobic reaction.

The most concerning thing about this whole ordeal is not what happened in that interview but what happened after that interview… Jeremy could have taken that opportunity to learn what was wrong. Instead he decided that he is the one who knows what homophobia is when he had hundreds if not thousands of people telling him what was wrong with what happened. He took a hit to his “Ally pride” and decided that the best course of action was to defend himself instead of understanding what happened and what he should do going forward.

I’m afraid the only thing he learned from that was to keep his thoughts to himself instead of learning why what he said was wrong.

anonymous asked:

pride and prejudice wasn't written as a resistance to the patriarchy djdjfhdhsj what

i mean i’ve been staring at this message for a solid minute now pondering how to reply, trying to figure out how ro reply, but honestly it boils down to one question: have you read it?

because literally the prevalent theme of pride & prejudice as well as other works of Austen—perhaps most visibly, sense & sensibility—is the ironic social commentary on the degraded role of women, as subjected and dependent on the way of whether they would marry well as they used to be?

like, honestly, what did you think it was about? sure it has a romance in it, but it’s probably one of the the most politically designed and carried out romantical arcs in literature, as it relies not so much on mutual affection, but rather darcy aknowledging his fault of diminishing elizabeth as an intelligent human being. at first, we see him as quite obviously set upon taking her for granted and applying stereotypes; startled with her outspoken attitude and clueless as to why she would reject him. because it IS surprising, that’s the point, given the context of Austen’s novel, the commonly praised choice would be to accept not only darcy, but mr collins without another thought. what do you think is the reason mrs bennet was so distraught all the time? there was no way of securing the future of her daughters other than marriage, we hear it being repeated over and over again—they cannot inherit their father’s fortune.

and—good grief. that’s the romantic ‘main plot’ concerning darcy and elizabeth alone, because the whole point is that he changes his beliefs and acknowledges elizabeth as an equal in the end. darcy isn’t exceptional for being surly and broody, he’s exceptional because he listens and learns.

but all the rest? the whole arc of charlotte, and her unhappy and dull marriage to mr collins, and the stark contrast with elizabeth. charlotte is not WRONG, she does the only thing she knows for certain will allow her to live in a respectful way without becoming ‘a burden to her parents’. the arc of lydia, basing off her portrayal against wickham? even with all his debt, infamy and faults, wickham’s opinion is at no point more blemished than lydia’s. that’s the point, that’s reiteraring the original notion of the disparity between men and women in regency England. the radiating, stinging paternalistic attitude of mr collins towards elizabeth when he marries charlotte and TELLS her that she would probably get no better chance. his absolute belief—corresponding with darcy’s, and contrasted with the latter’s rehabilitation later on—that elizabeth has no choice but accept him.

and elizabeth herself—for all the composition and impeccable manners, she IS a controversial figure in the novel. take the scene when she’s bashed by lady catherine de bourgh, the ongoing commentary on her being too forward with her opinions, the continuous bashing coming from her mother—the lingering threat that lizzy’s ‘stubbornness’ will cause her much trouble and, above all, prevent her from securing both her and the other sisters from absolute poverty when their father dies.

and, just … of course it’s written subtly, it’s conveyed in elizabeth’s wit, in austen’s slightly ironic narrative. the problem with the situation of women is not EXPLICITLY named and stated. it’s not modern times where we’re accustomed to forward addressing of feminist issues. no: it’s shown. it is not only the consistent theme in her works, it’s the prevalent theme of them. i mean, come on, there’s tonnes and tonnes of books that were NOT written with a purpose of targeting partiarchy. fuck, there are much MORE of such books than there is of the latter kind. But to choose Pride & Prejudice specifically, a novel which became one of the most famous books in the world, renowned for e x a c t l y t h i s … i cannot comprehend. please, at least consider this: do you really think the purpose of austen writing p&p was writing a romance? really? why would it become so much of a literature landmark, then?

i don’t mean to be nasty and honestly, go and have your opinion, you’re perfectly entitled to it, but it does make me sad that a novel that is a witty, outsanding and one of a kind social commentary on the plight of women in a specific time period written by a woman IN the time period is turned into something as common as a novel with a romantic plot. that’s all.

Descendants 2

Descendants 2 had a lot of strong points but what this post is going to focus on is the character development in all of the characters.

Mal -

Obviously this movie focused a lot on Mal. She has grown a lot from the first movie but not in a healthy way. She developed some bad habits (spelling things and people) and developed some self image issues. This is a vast difference from our defiant and confident Mal from the first movie. While I don’t like the softer Mal that was shown, even closer to the end of the movie, I like that they explored these identity issues. By the end of the movie Mal has reconnected with her roots, her group and what made her want to change in the first place. I think it leaves us with a strong Mal with more room to grow in the right direction.

Evie -

THIS IS MY GIRL! Gonna be honest, I disliked her in the first movie cause she was a ditz but my girl has come a lonngggg way. Evie grew from a superficial girl into an incredibly smart, talented and confident lady. She has a booming design business and doesn’t take crap from anyone, and right beside her for these changes was her supportive boyfriend Doug. I love the dynamic they have because they are equal to each other, she is the strong one but he will still defend her to princes, he manages her business finances and supports her dreams. BUT she is not a dainty princess and he know he isn’t her “prince” but he is her knight. I will defend this ship with. My. Life. Also, she has a big heart and is fighting for the kids that she grew up with. She is going to be a great advocate for the isle.

Jay -

Jay came a long way from his rule breaking enthusiastic lifestyle. He even obeys the smallest (and more sexist) of rules. We also saw that he became less aggressive than before. It was curious to see him as a responsible captain, and it was very fitting. Through out the rest of the movie we got to see him step up as a leader when Mal was lacking or when something needed to be said. Like when everyone was arguing he calmed them down and when Mal and Evie were chatting about her hair, he took initiative to bring them together. Jay is a born leader and is doing the one thing his father, jafar, could not. Being successful and compassionate in a leadership position. In the end when he forfeits his title as captain to Lonnie(?) so she can join the team that is him doing what is best for the team. She is strong and they needed her. He sacrificed his title for the greater good and I hope that doesn’t go unnoticed.

Carlos -

Our shy boy came a long way as well. Carlos is a more outspoken and confident person. I don’t think he lacked confidence in the first movie but I believe he was more introverted, now we see a more open Carlos who stands his ground. For example, kicking Chad out of his room repeatedly. He is dismissing a prince and gives 0 cares. We also have a slight mention of how he programmed his 3D printer to have really cool hacks and such which references his special abilities with computers. Jay can be physical, Evie can be smart, Mal can be sly and Carlos can hack. This is important. Finally we see our boy finally ask Jane out. Tbh, I didn’t see it. BUT I am not against it. The little dorks make each other happy and they make each other stronger, for Carlos he has someone to protect and for Jane she has someone who makes her feel beautiful which is not to be under-estimated.

Jane -

Jane grew in a few notable ways. She became a more involved and outspoken person than the shy, squeaky girl from the first movie. Now she is coordinating big projects and making sure the schedule is kept to. BUT she is still insecure about herself and you can tell, even the way she thought Carlos wanted to go to the party as friends until he spelled it out for her is a sign of the insecurity. Carlos makes her feel beautiful and while that isn’t the best place to get a confidence boost it is still a wonderful development for a young girls self esteem to have someone like that.

Duke -

well, he/she learned English so that is pretty impressive.

Ben -

Ben was a goodie two-shoes in the first movie. While he developed a wicked streak in the second one, he NEVER abandoned his big heart, which is what truly makes him King Ben. He was trying to tackle the life struggles of ruling a kingdom, dealing with an engagement, helping the project areas and maintaining his grades. We know he had to quit his different sports teams because he didn’t have time, the time he spent with Mal dwindled to near nothing and we know he was overwhelmed. He never complained though. Ben is a strong character who is taking care of business and while he might not be the first to throw a punch he is powerful with words before fists, and he doesn’t let his girlfriend fight all his battles for him. In the end when he still trying to seek peace, preventing what could have been a catastrophic battle, he was doing his duty as a king. He put his life on the line. His biggest development in this movie was seeing the other side of things and understanding just how abused these kids were. It is one thing to hear about it and think you know, but he never really knew.  And Uma abusing his kindness and spelling him didn’t scare him away from continuing to seek justice for these kids. Ben is a good leader.

Lonnie -

In the first movie we never really got to explore her character. We saw that she wasn’t afraid of our lil’ villains and that she was still compassionate towards them but that was it. In this movie she is introduced as a threat. She is powerful and smart just like her mother, and she may be a love interest for Jay which is a perfect math. Talk about power couple, am I right?! I look forward to seeing more of her.

NEW CHARACTERS -

Uma -

You can see the results of abuse and bullying in her personality. All she is looking for is validation. This is the entire point of “Say my name”, she wants to be acknowledged. Her dwarf rats don’t really obey her, they still challenge her constantly and call her “Shrimpy”. While she has issues, there is room for change. I really hope Disney takes the opportunity to properly show kids/people how to interact with someone who comes from that abusive background.

Harry Hook -

Dang.. Uh, not gonna lie, I am so weak to this little out law. I was practically drooling over him, and when he tickled Ben my heart skipped a beat. I could ship that, I wont cause I will be lynched, but I could. I could see him being a bigger problem in the future. He has more of a cutthroat attitude than Uma and it is clear that him and Jay have bad blood. I hope we see much more of that delectable pirate. Gil - I bet you are one that gets to leave the isle. You don’t seem inherently bad, just kinda a dunce. Definitely room for improvement.

I hope some of y’all realise that a strong female character doesn’t have to be a likeable character and doesn’t have to kick ass and be feisty. Give me the spoilt brats who learn to grow under trying circumstances. Give me sweet and mild-mannered women whose minds and intelligence are their greatest weapons. I’m sick of seeing on people hating on characters like Sansa Stark because they don’t fit the generalised perception of what it means to be a “strong woman”. How about we stop leaning toward patriarchal definitions of strength and realise that there is plenty of strength in femininity? Give me a well-written absolute little shit of a character over a badly-written kickass warrior any day.

Mind officially blown.

The Revered Omega

I am a sucker for the headcanon / AU of a Revered Omega where the Omega is seen as some delgacy and should be treated like royalty.

  • These AU’s tend to have a low precentage of Omegas in their world.
  • Omegas would never be allowed to go anywehre without a Beta or Alpha accompanying them.
  • They tend to not be allowed jobs unless it’s family related.
  • Being mated to an Omega is an honor!
  • Suiters would shower them with gifts.
  • Parents tend to arrange their Omega child’s marriage.
  • These Omegas are usually not allowed to do any sports.
  • They probably tend private schools or are home schooled.
  • Their life is usually controlled by a parent figure.
  • These Omegas tend to be shy and soft spoken.
  • They can also be undeceive or uncaring of what to decide when given choices. Like, “Why should it matter? You’ll end up making the final decision anyways.”

But, I also like the idea of a Reverd Omega who is outspoken and a handful

  • They would always be running off to go see what is in a shop’s window.
  • Their Beta or Alpha care-taker is always sighing. Their job isn’t boring.
  • These Omega are always making new friends, no matter the dynamic.
  • They don’t like their dynamic stop them from wanting to work or doing activities that make them break a sweat.
  • Totally the type to sneak out of the house with their friends. Then they get grounded for two weeks.
  • They beg their parent’s to go to a public school.
  • They dress themselves, they start trends.
  • Some Alphas or Betas see this Omega as un-mate-able because this Omega is outspoken and not stereotypically submissive.
  • Arranged marriage? They think not!

can yall stop trying to act like the new wonder woman movie is ~progressive~ when the main character is literally played by an outspoken zionist… and even if she weren’t, movies with a white female lead are not at all newly progressive in 20 fucking 17

it is absolutely, hilariously astonishing to me how often i’m asked to provide a 25 page extensively sourced MLA formatted academic style paper about why i think pansy parkinson is a character worth discussing, but…here we are, i guess.

first thing’s first—

fanon pansy =/= canon pansy.

canon pansy =/= fanon pansy.

canon pansy is a one-dimensional bully with no discernible personality traits beyond “mean” and “myopic”. she’s villainized by the story. her primary function within the narrative is to follow draco malfoy around. she’s background noise. she giggles, and she shrieks, and she makes fun of harry & co. pansy parkinson is also a figurative dumping ground for an alarming number of awful, misogynistic, enormously unflattering stereotypes for female characters—her relationship with draco is depicted as at least partially one-sided, which makes her seem desperate; she has a tendency to mock other students for their physical appearances, which makes her seem insecure; and she’s likened, more than once, to a literal dog. literally. a dog.

(rowling had a truly terrible habit of peppering the hp books with a lot of these villainous non-characters, who were almost always slytherins, and who were almost always described as either unattractive, unintelligent, or both. see: millicent bulstrode, who is jokingly suspected of being related to a troll. marcus flint, who cheats at quidditch, is held back multiple school years, and has appallingly bad teeth. crabbe & goyle, who are violent, overweight, and implied to need draco’s help with her homework in order to avoid flunking out.)

canon pansy is a poorly constructed caricature of a Mean Girl who readers are meant to find abhorrent. all the ingredients for a spectacularly unlikeable character are there. it’s like rowling had a checklist.

that said, pansy’s role as hermione’s social foil gives her slightly more of a personality than the majority of the other slytherins. pansy is shown to be friendly with blaise zabini, who is, canonically, arrogant and enigmatic and disdainful of draco malfoy. pansy wears a pink dress to the yule ball. she likes unicorns. she possesses leadership qualities—she’s a prefect, she has a “gang” of slytherin girls—and is, by virtue of that, at the very least an above average student. she’s loyal to the people she’s shown to be close to. she cries when draco is hurt. her political affiliations, parentage, and blood status are categorically unknown. we can assume she’s probably a pureblood, and that she chose not to fight against the death eater regime at hogwarts, but she wasn’t a death eater. her dialogue with draco and blaise zabini about the war in HPB was ambiguously supportive, at worst.

(important note—one of the major themes in the books is redemption. see: severus snape. regulus black. the malfoys. rowling’s world building was full of lofty, often convoluted metaphors for racism and homophobia, which had the unfortunate side-effect of humanizing a lot of actively, violently racist characters who would have otherwise been unpalatable to any reasonably self-aware reader. the notion that grand gestures of bravery and self-sacrifice are necessary for redemption—again, see: severus snape, regulus black, the malfoys—is, however, repulsive to me, especially when the argument of worthiness is centered on a teenage girl who has, canonically, spent her formative years hanging around actively, violently racist people. And that’s not even delving into the numerous instances of benign racism perpetrated by characters who aren’t vile slytherin blood supremacists. see: the weasleys. albus dumbledore. rufus scrimgeour. the text goes out of its way to emphasize that combating internalized prejudices is an ongoing battle that has to be consciously fought. it’s a choice. but i digress.)

canon pansy =/= fanon pansy.

fanon pansy =/= canon pansy.

i see a lot of discourse about pansy being an inappropriate “feminist icon"—she’s a bully, she’s mean to other girls, et cetera, et cetera—and the irony of passing that kind of judgment on a female character whose entire narrative existence is predicated on her ability to compare unfavorably to, you know, all the good female characters; it is staggering.

so.

look.

i have loved characters like hermione granger and ginny weasley and fleur delacour since i was a child. they are smart and brave and interesting and Not Like Other Girls. their flaws are considered socially acceptable. hermione is bossy and narrow-minded; but she’s also usually right. ginny is outspoken and reactionary and obstinate; but she’s also pretty and popular and good at sportball. fleur is vain and self-absorbed; but she’s also beautiful and brilliant and fiercely loyal.

Not. Like. Other. Girls.

not like pansy parkinson, for example, who is, almost unapologetically, exactly the kind of girl no one ever wants to be.

she likes pink. she giggles. she cries. she chases after a boy who, at best, seems mostly indifferent to her presence. she’s self-conscious enough about her nose that it’s a well-known sore spot for other students to maliciously poke at. i don’t think we ever get a description of what her voice sounds like, but i instinctively associate her with a high-pitched, nasally whine. she’s petty—see: her interview with rita skeeter in GoF—and she’s narcissistic—see: her stint with the inquisitorial squad—and she’s a cliché, of course, just not an especially creative one.

there are obvious, valid criticisms to be made about how people interact with characters like pansy parkinson. and draco malfoy. and severus snape. but there is a huge difference between blindly excusing or romanticizing those characters’ actions and making an effort to humanize them.

tl;dr

bad people are not bad characters.
