The Great Migration’s Impact on Modern Black Speech
On my dialect test, aside from correctly placing me in Chicago, the other areas I matched with Aurora and Rockford showed connections with the south, northern midwest (IL/MI/WI/MN/IA) and northeast (PA/NY) specifically along the Illinois Central/ various railroad corridor. This brought to mind the conversation I had with my parents about why black people from Chicago don’t talk like white people from Chicago. More often coming up when I meet strangers.
I’ve noticed that black people from Chicago and the surrounding area tend to have an faint southern tint to their speech and use southern synonyms for certain things. My paternal family’s ancestry is in the darker orange area in Mississippi (Jackson area). Fun fact: Around 70% of Black Chicago’s ancestry can be traced to Mississippi. Like many black southerners my grandparents took the train to Chicago during the 2nd Great Migration, which also stopped in Rockford and Aurora, or others either stopped in St’ Louis, kept going northward to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota or headed east to Detroit, Philly, NYC instead.

I'm starting babysitting soon and Idk how much to charge. Help?! I live in northern WI if that matgers
Location actually matters a lot in terms of payment for any job (cost of living, etc.) but especially for babysitting. In some areas (rural, mostly) you can charge as low as $5 even in this day & age, but compare that to $15 (or more) in places like NYC. The national average is about $10 an hour and is dependent on your area, but also on things like how long you’ve been babysitting for, the age of the children, whether or not you cook meals or drive them places, etc.
