The artists and performers of The Miss Rockaway Armada shared a common vision to float down the Mississippi from Minneapolis to New Orleans, on rafts they made themselves out of salvaged materials, and in 2006 they made it a reality. Five years later, still driven by an urge to meet new people, learn new lessons, and “discover the vast, mysterious land we inhabit” while sharing their art, music, and performance, The Armada was in Philadelphia spreading ideas about sustainability and visions for transforming materials. While creating an exhibition of floating sculptures at the Philadelphia Art Alliance the group also found time to engage with the community while painting this fantastical vision on a wall running between North Broad and Watts Streets. @philartalliance@muralarts
