Weekend Box Office: 'Kong: Skull Island' Scales $61M for No. 1 Finish
Overseas, the reboot debuts to $81.6 million for a global bow of $142.6 million; 'Logan' falls to No. 2 as it races past $150 million in the U.S.

Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island roared louder than expected in its North American box office debut, scaling $61 million from 3,846 theaters to beat Wolverine threequel Logan.

Kong hopes to restore the world’s most famous ape to glory and build a new film franchise, with a Kong v. Godzilla already in the works. The one major caveat: The movie, costing at least $185 million to make before a major marketing spend, will likely need to earn $500 million globally to land in the black.

Well, it’s time for some numbers, though I’m not sure how these figures are determined with Sunday so young.

Yesterday and today, all the BMW Hommage concept car are assembled and on display at the Concourso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este including the latest: The BMW 2002 Hommage.

The 2002 Homage will also make its North American debut at The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering this August.

Box-Office Preview: 'Fate of the Furious' Revs Engines for $110M-Plus U.S. Debut

Get ready for an octane-laced weekend at the box office.

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious - the eighth outing in the male-fueled action franchise - is projected to earn $110 million or more in its North American debut and north of $350 million globally. The last film, Furious 7, launched to a record-shattering $147.2 million domestically and $397 million globally in April 2015 following the tragic death of series lead Paul Walker.

All agree that Furious 7’s rousing start was fueled by those wanting to see the final title starring Walker, who died in a violent car crash in November 2013 during a hiatus from shooting.

Fate of the Furious could easily outperform prerelease tracking and has a shot at matching Furious 7’s global debut, thanks to China, where it also opens this weekend. Furious 7 debuted to $182 million in the Middle Kingdom on its way to earning $390 million.

The movie currently boasts an 80 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a franchise-best topping Furious 7 (79 percent).

Fate of the Furious begins racing out the gate Wednesday in a handful of foreign marks, followed by another wave Thursday. On Friday, it opens everywhere in North America, where it will get a berth in 4,304 theaters, the widest footprint in history for a non-summer tentpole.

Directed by F. Gary Gray in his franchise debut after helming Straight Outta Compton for Universal, Fate of the Furious once again stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell. Newcomers include Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren and Scott Eastwood. The story follows a villainous superhacker (Theron) who turns Diesel’s character against his crew.

Heralded for their diverse casts and globetrotting storylines, the Fast and Furious movies have collectively grossed more than $3.9 billion globally. Furious 7 was far and away the biggest earner and the only installment to cross $1 billion on its way to finishing its worldwide run with $1.516 billion.

Fate of the Furious certainly spooked the competition - there is no other movie opening nationwide this weekend.

Magnetic Press has announced the acquisition of ZAYA, by French author JD Morvan and Chinese illustrator Huang-Jei Wei, to be published for the first time in English this Summer. Originally published in French in three serialized volumes by Dargaud Editions, Magnetic Press’s edition will collect the complete series into an all-new, 224-page hardcover compilation for its North American debut.

ZAYA tells the story of a secret agent in the distant future who left her post to seek a normal life as an artist and mother. When a biomechanical threat destroys an orbiting colony station and former fellow agents start dying, she is called back into the field to find and stop the danger. Her investigation leads to many questions about her own past, filled with explosive revelations. This sci-fi action-mystery is told through breathtaking design and illustration by Huang-Jei Wei, known throughout the field for his bio-mechanical aesthetic and lushly painted artwork. The original series received a Silver honor from the 3rd International Manga Awards, granted by the Japan Foundation, established to honor and promote outstanding contributions to the art of Manga worldwide.

“ZAYA is an absolute feast – you can spend hours just soaking in the atmosphere and exquisite design work on every page,” says Magnetic Press’s Publisher, Mike Kennedy. “We cannot contain how excited we are to put this book in the hands of English-speaking readers for the first time!”

ZAYA was the brainchild of writer JD Morvan and Huang-Jei Wei, who wanted to establish an original style of “Franco-Chinese” Manga, combining characteristics of both aesthetics with a mutual love of Japanese speculative-sci-fi manga to form something wholly unique and remarkable. Wei’s first published work just out of school, YA SAN, earned him a rabid following, but it was ZAYA that established him as a sought-after artist among Asia’s great “conceptual mangaka”, including Katsuya Terada, Yasushi Nirasawa, and Range Murata.
