WONDER WOMAN Tracking for Solid $65M Box-Office Debut
Gal Gadot stars as the iconic female superhero in the movie, directed by Patty Jenkins.

Warner and DC’s Wonder Woman should command at least $65 million in its North American debut next month, according to early tracking.

That’s on par with the first outings in the Thor and Captain America franchises.

Wonder Woman is unchartered territory in that it’s the first female-led superhero movie from a major Hollywood studio. Gal Gadot stars in the title role, while Patty Jenkins directed.

Those with access to tracking say interest is strongest among males who are 25 and older, followed by females 25 and older. The good news for Warners is that the movie is appealing to younger males and females as well.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters June 2.

Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen and Elena Anaya also star.
Weekend Box Office: 'Kong: Skull Island' Scales $61M for No. 1 Finish
Overseas, the reboot debuts to $81.6 million for a global bow of $142.6 million; 'Logan' falls to No. 2 as it races past $150 million in the U.S.

Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island roared louder than expected in its North American box office debut, scaling $61 million from 3,846 theaters to beat Wolverine threequel Logan.

Kong hopes to restore the world’s most famous ape to glory and build a new film franchise, with a Kong v. Godzilla already in the works. The one major caveat: The movie, costing at least $185 million to make before a major marketing spend, will likely need to earn $500 million globally to land in the black.

Well, it’s time for some numbers, though I’m not sure how these figures are determined with Sunday so young.

Magnetic Press has announced the acquisition of ZAYA, by French author JD Morvan and Chinese illustrator Huang-Jei Wei, to be published for the first time in English this Summer. Originally published in French in three serialized volumes by Dargaud Editions, Magnetic Press’s edition will collect the complete series into an all-new, 224-page hardcover compilation for its North American debut.

ZAYA tells the story of a secret agent in the distant future who left her post to seek a normal life as an artist and mother. When a biomechanical threat destroys an orbiting colony station and former fellow agents start dying, she is called back into the field to find and stop the danger. Her investigation leads to many questions about her own past, filled with explosive revelations. This sci-fi action-mystery is told through breathtaking design and illustration by Huang-Jei Wei, known throughout the field for his bio-mechanical aesthetic and lushly painted artwork. The original series received a Silver honor from the 3rd International Manga Awards, granted by the Japan Foundation, established to honor and promote outstanding contributions to the art of Manga worldwide.

“ZAYA is an absolute feast – you can spend hours just soaking in the atmosphere and exquisite design work on every page,” says Magnetic Press’s Publisher, Mike Kennedy. “We cannot contain how excited we are to put this book in the hands of English-speaking readers for the first time!”

ZAYA was the brainchild of writer JD Morvan and Huang-Jei Wei, who wanted to establish an original style of “Franco-Chinese” Manga, combining characteristics of both aesthetics with a mutual love of Japanese speculative-sci-fi manga to form something wholly unique and remarkable. Wei’s first published work just out of school, YA SAN, earned him a rabid following, but it was ZAYA that established him as a sought-after artist among Asia’s great “conceptual mangaka”, including Katsuya Terada, Yasushi Nirasawa, and Range Murata.
