In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.
Think twice before you say weather control is just a conspiracy
theory. Then ask yourself why Monsanto owns patents in Geo-engineering.
Weather undeniably affects food access and food costs. One glance at
maps across the globe reveals that food production areas are being
especially hard hit, and we are seeing prices rise accordingly. These
natural events can be exploited both by speculators and governments.
However, with the introduction of weather modification, invested in by
those such as Bill Gates and openly promoted by elite globalist think
tanks, concerns have been raised over the possibility that governments
could use weather as a deliberate weapon to create food wars.
Accusations have already been leveled charging exactly that. While some
might dismiss the various possibilities of “steering the weather” for
malevolent purposes as conspiracy, it is much more difficult to ignore
the 1996 document presented to the Air Force titled Owning the Weather
2025 (PDF), which explicitly states as a heading on page 10: Applying
Weather-modification to Military Operations. One key section states that
weather control could be virtual, as well as literal:
Offensive abilities could provide spoofing options to create virtual
weather in the enemy’s sensory and information systems, making it more
likely for them to make decisions producing results of our choosing
rather than theirs. It would also allow for the capability to mask or
disguise our weather-modification activities….Also key to the feasibility of such a system is the ability to model
the extremely complex nonlinear system of global weather in ways that
can accurately predict the outcome of changes in the influencing
variables….Conceivably, with enough lead time and the right conditions, you could get “made-to-order” weather. This would certainly be the ultimate endgame for anyone wishing to
use food as a weapon of control and profit. This possibility should not
be easily dismissed, but rather it warrants open-minded investigation
and research. ”If you control the food supply, you control the people” Henry Kissinger
Vietnam War Weather Modification – Operation Popeye
Geophysical Warfare — “Rainmakers.”
During the Vietnam Conflict, our warfighters needed a way to interdict
enemy traffic on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. “Project Popeye” helped answer
the call. China Lake adapted its cloud seeding technologies to enhance
rainfall thereby significantly deterring enemy activity on the trail.
This highly successful China Lake technology was also used in hurricane
abatement, fog control, and drought relief.

/ «[…] In order to make fundamental progress, we needed to introduce new physical concepts, such as deterministic chaos and Poincaré resonances, and new mathematical tools to turn these weaknesses into strengths. In our dialogue with nature, we transform what first appear as obstacles into original conceptual structures providing fresh insights into the relationship between the knower and the known. » Prigogine, I., The End of Certainty, pp. 188-189 /
Nonlinear Warfare - A New System of Political Control (2014)
A short film by Adam Curtis screened during Charlie Brooker’s review of 2014 on the BBC; shows the how deliberate undermining of peoples perception of the world, by manipulating the media and civil society, creates confusion and contradiction, undermining any opposition to existing power structures. This strategy has allowed quantitative easing to go almost unnoticed and unchallenged, even though it is the biggest transfer of wealth to the rich in recent documented history.

Of course the word chaos is used in rather a vague sense by a lot of writers, but in physics it means a particular phenomenon, namely that in a nonlinear system the outcome is often indefinitely, arbitrarily sensitive to tiny changes in the initial condition.

Today the network of relationships linking the human race to itself and to the rest of the biosphere is so complex that all aspects affect all others to an extraordinary degree. Someone should be studying the whole system, however crudely that has to be done, because no gluing together of partial studies of a complex nonlinear system can give a good idea of the behavior of the whole.

Here’s some word spam about my jumbled thoughts about Life is Strange in general, and mainly the whole “Rachel in the Dark Room” thing. This may have already been covered but I’d like to share my thoughts if I can c:
Side(?) note here: Here’s what I’ve made of other episode titles:
Chrysalis - nothing much to do with photography. it’s just “the pupal stage of butterflies”. Obvious connection between the blue butterfly and the title that I don’t think I need to explain.
Out of Time - At first I thought this just linked with Max’s power faltering, however there are some connections between “Out of Time” and photography. I googled “Out of Time Photography” and one of the recommended searches was a company called “A Byte Out of Time”, which made me think a little more about perhaps an underlying message with this title - with photos being little pieces of time that are saved, which almost links in with Max’s most recent ability shown, the ability to jump to pieces of time that have been captured. (Although I’m probably overthinking it aha)
Chaos Theory is explained a tad by Chloe I believe, but it’s basically the “sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state” tl;dr one tiny thing changes a lot of things later on down the line, which is basically what the game is based on.
Polarized: A polarizing filter is placed in front of a camera to darken skies or change the light of a photograph. This could be something to do with changing things in the past, which is one of the top theories at this moment (you’d have to go back to the butterfly picture and have Chloe be killed) Perhaps, although very meh, the darkening of skies could be somewhat of a hint at the storm due to “wipe out Arcadia Bay”? I think this will be made more clear soon, as this could also be some sort of pun or similar based off of the fact that Max and Chloe’s father use/d Polaroid cameras.
Okay i’mma bold this because I think this makes a lot of sense wow Personally I think that Max will only be able to travel through photographs if they were taken with either a polaroid camera or with Chloe’s dad’s camera. More than likely just Chloe’s dad’s camera, as there was no real need for Chloe to give Max her dad’s camera, plot-wise. (Also less scenes would have to be made, as technically if you could jump into any picture you could spend weeks going through Max’s memorial wall) (Also although this would be cool and bring Chloe’s dad into this a lot more, the player wouldn’t be able to go back to the Butterfly picture, which contradicts a large+popular theory) Max could have been able to repair her camera, but she couldn’t, which says to me that the developers really wanted to either share the knowledge that Chloe’s dad also used a polaroid camera, or that perhaps said camera is important to the plot.
Side Note End
The general theory behind the “Dark Room” was that it was a party, the End of The World halloween party to be specific, but after a little misreading I think differently. Or at least the creators were trying to be sneaky (as usual) and put yet another underlying message in the episode title.
I was watching LiS theory videos when I saw on the thumbnail “DARK ROOM” written in caps with one word below the other and I suddenly clicked and read it as “Darkroom”. My mum works in a darkroom so I’ll be basing some of this on things she’s told me. A darkroom is a room that must be made completely pitch black to process photographic film or paper. After thinking a little about this, I’m thinking of Jefferson. He seems to specialise in Black and White photography, and after shooting a roll of film, you have to have it developed in a darkroom for printing (off the top of my head, it may be a different process) before using it. Of course, this isn’t enough to tie Jefferson in with this all, however evidence against him has made him my #1 suspect in the both Rachel Amber case and as the antagonist of this game. Surely the match between “Dark Room” and “Darkroom” is intentional! The game, after all, revolves around the mysterious world of photography and taking snapshots of the past and reliving them and such.
“RACHEL IN THE DARK ROOM RACHEL IN THE DARK ROOM” Is always shown in the subtitles as two words, yet I seem to recall that when Nathan wrote it, there was no real spacing between the words, so I’m really convincing myself about this whole Darkroom thing. Lots of people have been saying that Rachel’s been trapped in a dark room full of her own thoughts/time/memories, or trapped in time, but she could possibly be trapped in a camera or have the only memories of her (if she is missing at school) kept in Max’s memory or that of a camera, a roll of film? Perhaps all the clues to Rachel’s disappearance lie within a camera. Of course my first suspicion is Jefferson, who could/would definitely use a darkroom, used black and white cameras, knew Rachel, etc. I still think the whole thing’s a co-operation between Principle Wells, Nathan, Jefferson with possibly Nathan’s father “own[ing]” them and making them do as he pleases. Nathan almost seemed like he knew from experience that his father manipulates people, and the pressure put on him by his father if this turns out to be true could have worsened or caused mental stress to the poor kid.
tl;dr - Dark room = darkroom = Rachel being trapped somehow inside a Darkroom = Perhaps Jefferson????? black and white photography = oh my god the hidden clues in this game are amazing
