female zinemakers wanted!

I am starting a zine feminist collective called Nadine alongside Jo Rosenthal, to promote women in independent publishing. Were named after the imaginary friend character from the 90s children’s cartoon, Arthur.

We will debut at the Independent Art Book Fair (September 16-18, 2016) and are looking for zines made by women to be displayed at our table. ALL PROFITS from our table will be donated to Henry Street Settlement: Third Street Women’s residence. Please share this notice with friends!

Email us at + if you would like to be apart of making women in the zine world more visible or know someone who would….. :)

Black Girls CODE introduces young girls of color to computer programming, mobile app development, robotics and other STEM fields, so the girls can learn how to build the tools they want to see in the world. The non-profit is a global organization, with chapters in Oakland, Calif., Atlanta, New York and even South Africa, with expansion to eight more cities planned for next year. Every chapter targets girls of color between the ages of 7 and 17, formative years for capturing the girls’ interest in STEM and building their self-confidence.

"Science is magic, and our girls are opening their eyes to the fact that they can learn to become the magicians,” says Bryant, who launched the company with a class of 12 girls.

But the reach of Black Girls CODE has grown exponentially in two years; the roster now exceeds 2,000 girls. Bryant was named one of the White House’s Champions for Change in the tech sector, and Black Girls Code was named one the “2012 Most Innovative Nonprofit.”

Richard Berman: if you see this man in public, please spit on him. If you serve him food ever in any restaurant, please do the people of the world a favor and defecate in it.
April 29, 2013

Yesterday we reblogged something from, which was criticizing (& representing straight-up lies) against the humane society. One reader was kind enough to inform us that HumaneWatch is one of the many misinformation projects of Richard Berman’s. All of the above organizations are various projects run by Berman and Company, paid for by the ruling class, intended to spread misinformation & lies for the benefit of the ruling class.

Richard Berman is a Washington, D.C.-based hired propagandist who uses front groups to defend his corporate clients against the public interest. Using his lobbying and consulting firm, Berman and Company, as a revenue vehicle for his activities, Berman runs at least 23 industry-funded projects, such as the Center for Union Facts, and holds 24 “positions” within these various entities.

Make a mental note of the above organizations and keep in mind these brands. Never reblog (like I did) Berman and Company’s propaganda.

It was suggested to me that Charity Navigator is an honest & useful tool for actually evaluating how charities are spending their money. Here’s their information on The Humane Society of the United States. They have a 4 star rating.

The information in that post against the humane society was wrong, but it got 800+ notes (and we contributed to that count in a big way). Please reblog this & do some more reading/post your own posts about the propaganda campaigns Richard Berman is running to combat the misinformation.

I’m sorry we posted the original post, but let’s not allow this opportunity to expose this terrible organization go to waste.

I’m reading vintage manga for charity!

Hi guys!  I’m doing everything I can to support my favorite charity, The Time In Children’s Arts Initiative.  Time In teaches opera through hands on art as well as literature through manga with entire classes of kids from 3 of NYC’s most underfunded schools.  Time In happens during the school day for a half-day every week, alternating weeks between studio time and gallery hops to NYC’s most fabulous galleries and museums.  The program keeps getting bigger, and next year, Time In kids will go all the way from Pre-K through the 5th grade, serving 800 kids!

In the pictures above, you can see some of the wonderful Time In Kids’ drawings of characters from Benjamin Britten’s opera of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and vintage-manga-inspired princesses of the sea from Rimsky-Korsakov‘s opera Sadko.

To help support this incredible organization, I’m doing a vintage manga charity-read!  I’m starting with the 9 manga in the first picture.  To help me out in my charity-reading quest, I would love it if you would donate as little or as much as you can.  I’ll be giving updates on every manga on the list.  Don’t be shy, every dollar counts!

Here are the manga:

Hensoukyoku by Takemiya Keiko

Warui Ko by Kimura Minori

Shiniseru Oujo no Tame no Kujakumai by Satou Shio

Green Carnation by Yamagishi Ryouko

Bara Gensou by Mizuno Hideko

Hey guys. If you’re a follower of mine, you know that I work at a ranch that has many beautiful horses, and we work on teaching kids to ride as well as training the horses through love and leadership. We have many students and summer camp kids that adore our horses, and we adore them. There are three of them pictured above (Scout, Rain, and Mona).

The ranch is a non-profit rescue center, and more than 75% of our horses are donated because they need a home. We have many horses that were considered useless or homeless for a while, and the ranch has turned them around and gotten them healthy again, and they turned out to be the most loving, kindest animals that I’ve ever seen. We have 33 of them.

The people who work there are the kindest and most accepting people I’ve ever met, and we constantly get kids with social and/or mental disabilities that thrive and take on our horses as their own therapist.

However, this summer, they didn’t make enough money. Not enough kids signed up. They’re $3,000 in debt, and on top of that, they have a couple of sick horses that desperately need help from the vet (for instance, Blanca, a sweet white pony, has cancer that needs to be removed). If that wasn’t bad enough, $1,000 was stolen from them recently. It takes a LOT of money to feed 33 horses, and in the winter time, it costs even more. They really need donations right now.

I can’t stand the thought of them having to go under. If they get any more in debt, we have to start giving away our horses and separating them from their herds and the ranch’s owner, Claudia, who has tirelessly worked with her family to keep the ranch in order and keep the rescues (both human and horse) coming in. But now, she needs your help.

If you could spare even the smallest amount of money, please, PLEASE go here. They need it desperately, and they don’t need a whole lot of money. Donations of any kind are accepted and needed, so please go!!

I’ve seen tumblr get people surgeries and out of abusive households and donate enough to keep small non-profits or rescue centers up and running, and right now, their ranch and rescue center needs help. Every single one of those horses and Claudia’s family are my family now, and we desperately need help. I hate it when people do this, and I never thought I’d say this, but PLEASE reblog this post. Even if you can’t donate, maybe someone else can.

Happy Holidays from the otter boys at the Aquarium of the Bay! You can help give the otters new gifts this holiday season - like toys, treats, or even new blankets - when you make a donation to Aquarium of the Bay. For every $150 we raise, Ryer, Baxter, and Shasta will get a new present! And I will be sure to document every gift given. Make a donation today!
You can even ear mark your donation for a specific otter… Ryer. haha.

For those who want to support autistic advocacy groups

Please do not donate to Autism Speaks. I know their name shows up in a lot of places, but they do not support autistic people:

  • Autism Speaks will only use 3% of its funding on supports for autistic people

  • They use April’s Autism Awareness Month status to spread damaging “awareness” through their misrepresentation and prejudiced rhetoric, rather than acceptance

  • They include no autistic people in senior leadership positions, seek a “cure” that most autistic people do not want, and have repeatedly ignored autistic voices on the matter.

I am Hilary Lavenderwhisp, Wiccan and artist. I am the creator of Gaia’s Children, a non profit organization that hopes to provide Wiccan and Pagan youth with emotional, spiritual, and educational support. We provide a safe haven for these youths who are not being supported by their families because of their religious beliefs. We hope to raise awareness between youths and families of the positivity of their choice of converting to Paganism and Wicca.

To achieve this, I want to provide an emotional support email. We are hoping to team up with covens around the world to partner with our organization to help youths in their area. We also one day want to provide safe places to shelter Pagan youths and provide them with resources, such as youth meetings, family counseling, Sabbat celebrations, Wiccan history lectures, nature appreciation summer camps, and so much more.

At the moment, only the ground work is being laid out. Any advice, ideas, and criticism is much appreciated.

Is Occupy Wall Street outperforming the Red Cross in hurricane relief?

November 4, 2012

In Sunset Park, a predominantly Mexican and Chinese neighborhood in South Brooklyn, St. Jacobi’s Church was one of the go-to hubs for people who wanted to donate food, clothing, and warm blankets or volunteer help other New Yorkers who were still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  On Saturday, Ethan Murphy, one of the people heading the kitchen operation, estimated they would prepare and send out 10,000 meals to people in need. Thousands and thousands of pounds of clothes were being sorted, labeled, and distributed, and valuable supplies like heaters and generators were being loaded up in cars to be taken out to the Rockaways, Staten Island and other places in need.  However, this well-oiled operation wasn’t organized by the Red Cross, New York Cares, or some other well-established volunteer group. This massive effort was the handiwork of none other than Occupy Wall Street—the effort is known as Occupy Sandy.

The scene at St. Jacobis on Saturday was friendly, orderly chaos.  Unlike other shelters that had stopped collecting donations or were looking for volunteers with special skills such as medical training, Occupy Sandy was ready to take anyone willing to help. A wide range of people pitched in, including a few small children making peanut butter sandwiches, but most volunteers were in their 20s and 30s. A large basement rec room had become a hive of vegetable chopping and clothes bagging. They held orientations throughout the day for new volunteers. One of the orientation leaders, Ian Horst, who has been involved with a local group called Occupy Sunset Park for the past year, says he was “totally blown away by the response” and the sheer numbers of people who showed up and wanted to help. He estimated that he’d given an orientation to 200 people in the previous hour.

By midday, a line stretched all the way down the block of people who’d already attended orientation and were waiting for rides to be dispatched to volunteer. Kiley Edgley and Eric Schneider had been waiting about 20 minutes and were toward the front of the line. Like several people I spoke to, the fact that this effort was being organized by the occupy movement wasn’t a motivating factor—they found out about the opportunity to volunteer online and just wanted to help.

So how did an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, best known as a leaderless movement that brought international attention to issues of economic injustice through the occupation of Zucotti Park in the financial district last year, become a leader in local hurricane relief efforts?  Ethan Murphy, who was helping organize the food at St. Jacobis and had been cooking for the occupy movement over the past year, explained there wasn’t any kind of official decision or declaration that occupiers would now try to help with the hurricane aftermath.  “This is what we do already, “ he explained: Build community, help neighbors, and create a world without the help of finance.  Horst said, “We know capitalism is broken, so we have already been focused on organizing to take care of our own [community] needs.” He sees Occupy Sandy as political ideas executed on a practical level.

As frustration grows around the city about the pace and effectiveness of the response from FEMA, and other government agencies and the Red Cross, I imagine both concerned New Yorkers and storm victims alike will remember who was out on the front lines.

A Merry-Go-Round That Turns The Power Of Play Into Electricity

The NonProfits - Safety tips on staying safe for women!

The Non Profits - Safety tips on staying safe for women!

“Tips on staying safe… for women”

The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

The three reasons women are easy targets for random acts of violence are:

1) Lack of Awareness - You MUST know where you are & what’s going on around you.

2) Body Language -
Keep your head up, swing your arms, stand straight up.

3) Wrong Place, Wrong Time -
DON’T walk alone in an alley, or drive in a bad neighborhood at night.

Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.) DON’T DO THIS!The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. This is a good reason to park away from big vans.

Look at the car parked on the drivers side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman towalk you backout. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (Better paranoid than dead.)

ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.) Do not get on an elevator if there is a weirdo already on there. (Of course bad men don’t always look bad.) Do not stand back in the corners of the elevator. Be near the front, by the doors, ready to get off or on. If you get on the elevator on the 25th floor, and the Boogie Man gets on the 22nd, get off when he gets on. Don’t ride the elevator with him if you are not comfortable.

If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! Police only make 4 of 10 shots when they are in range of 3-9 feet. This is due to stress. The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good looking,well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Pat Malone told us the story of his daughter, who came out of the mall and was walking to her car when she noticed 2 older ladies in front of her. Then she saw a police car come towards her with officers who said hello. She also noticed that all 8 handicap spots in the area were empty. As she neared her car, she saw a man a few rows over calling to her for help. He wanted her to close his passenger side door. He was sitting in the driver’s side, and said he was handicapped. He continued calling, until she turned and headed back to the mall, and then he began cursing at her. In the meantime, she wondered why he didn’t ask the 2 older ladies, or the policeman for help, and why he was not parked in any of the empty handicap spots. As she got back to the mall, two male friends of hers were exiting, and as she told them the story, and turned to point at the car, the man was getting out of the back seat into the front, and the car sped away. DON’T GET CAUGHT IN THIS TRAP.

Tips to saving your life, if you have gotten into a violent situation:
REACT IMMEDIATELY - If he abducts you in a parking lot, and is taking you to an abandoned area, DON’T LET HIM GET YOU TO THAT AREA. If you are driving, react immediately in the situation, and crash your car while still going 5 mph. If he’s driving, find the right time, and stick your fingers in his eyes. He must watch the road, so choose an unsuspecting time, and gouge him. It is your ONLY defense. While he is in shock, GET OUT. This sounds gross, but the alternative is worse if you do not act.

RESIST - Don’t go along with him: Run, if you are able: DON’T EVER GIVE UP! You DO NOT want to get to a crime scene.

Always keep your distance when walking past strangers on the street or in dark areas.

GET A CELL PHONE: There are packages for $19.95 a month that allow you to program only 911 into the dialing out program. (This is an alternative for parents who say it is too expensive for their kids to have a cell phone.)

BREAK DOWNS: Make every effort to avoid this by ALWAYS keeping your carin good working order. If your car breaks down:

LOCK YOUR DOORS. You better have a cell phone to call for help. If you don’t have a cell phone: (shame on you) keep a blanket, warm clothes, a pair of boots, and a flashlight in your car always, for emergencies.

If it’s noon on a business day, you may want to put your hazards on and walk to safety. If it’s 2 AM, put on your warm clothes, and walk to a lighted area. You are a perfect target if you are sitting in your car broken down. Predators search the highways for easy targets like you.

If you’re on a desolate road: walk away from the car (in your warm clothes) and go to some bushes, or some area AWAY from your vehicles. It will be cold, and uncomfortable, but you DO NOT want to stay in your car, and there are no psycho bogeymen waiting in the bushes who knew you were going to break down there and then.

Physical defenses that we can use against the violent predator: The EYES are the most vulnerable part of the body. Poke him there HARD. It may be your only window of opportunity.

The neck is also a vulnerable spot, but you MUST know where to grip, AND HAVE THE STRENGTH to cut off his breath. Punch him in the throat to cut off his air supply.

The last place is the KNEES. Everyone’s knees are very vulnerable, and a swift kick here will take anyone down. **** A cautionary note about these things. If you do not do these things right the first time, you are in trouble, because it will only anger the individual, and that anger will be TAKEN OUT ON YOU. I’m not saying don’t attempt them, it may be your only hope, but be forceful when you do.

If you are walking alone in the dark (which you shouldn’t be) and you find him following/chasing you: Scream “FIRE!” and not “help”; People don’t want to get involved when people yell “help” but “fire” draws attention because people are nosy. RUN!

Find an obstacle, such as a parked car, and run around it, like Ring Around the Rosie. This may sound silly, but over the years, 5 women have told Pat Malone that this SAVED THEIR LIVES. Your last hope is getting under the car. Once you are under there, there are tons of things to hold onto, and he will not be able to get you out and will not come under for you (most likely). Usually they give up by this point. The catch here is that YOU MUST PRACTICE GETTING UNDER THE CAR. You must have a plan (he will have one); know if you will be going on your back, front, from the side or back of the car. It must be practiced.

Never let yourself or anyone that you know be the “closer” in any type of business (bar, store, restaurant, gas station). Pat knew Danielle, who was a girl that just died from being shot point blank by some kids while she was closing at the local gas station. He talked with her the night before she died, and asked whether it ever scared her to close alone. She said, “Yes, but I’ll be allright, Pat. I’ll be all right.” She wasn’t. Our world is not as safe as we pretend that it is, and living in our fantasy worlds WILL get us in trouble, sooner or later. Pat Malone said again and again that the women who die EVERY MINUTE from violent crimes expected to go to bed tonight, and get up tomorrow. No one expects it,but we must be prepared and aware so that we HAVE A PLAN. BE PREPARED TO ACT! AND ACT HARD! HAVE A PLAN!

I would encourage you to pass this on to all women, not just your friends and family, but everybody. We all need to hear it. For you and to share with your family, especially the women.

I just wanted to share this–these are photos of kids from The Time In Children’s Arts Initiative, a non-profit program that I’m very involved with, who have done beautiful drawings inspired by Tezuka Osamu’s Phoenix (Early Works).  It’s a really amazing program.  If you’re interested, the link above tells all about it :-)
