Just a few more poems and I’ll finally, conclusively be done with Montale. This is the pile that’s waiting for me next: plays and poetry by the Saint Lucian Derek Walcott.
************
Derek Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992
“for a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment”.
************
Unlike the poetry that I’ve been reading recently, Walcott writes directly in English, so I’m excited to be reading works that haven’t lost their force, flavor, and nuance after translation. It will also be interesting since I’ll be reading poetry by someone who actually lives in the Caribbean as I am reading novels and stories by García Marquez set in Central America. (Trivia: Walcott also paints and has done most of the book jacket artwork himself.)
************
The constant back and forth is my way of refreshing the mind, keeping it from going stale. Soon I’ll also be posting books by Philippine poets, writing in Filipino, as part of my many reading projects (not just because August is “Buwan ng Wika”/“Language Month”) and my set of books on Philippine folk literature. And yes, I’m still reading through Bienvenido Lumbera’s “Balaybay: Mga Tulang Lunot at Manibalang” (every poem there is a revelation).

#Nobel #nobelprize #nobelprizeinliterature #nobelrazam #svetlanaalexievich #nobel2015 #belarus #photooftheday #bestoftheday #instagood #instamood #литература #алексиевич #belnobel #беларусь (at Minsk, Belarus)

“Then, I don’t know why, but something inside me snapped. I started yelling at the top of my lungs, and I insulted him and told him not to waste his prayers on me. I grabbed him by the collar of his cassock. I was pouring out on him everything that was in my heart, cries of anger and cries of joy…” (From “The Stranger”)

Read Albert Camus’s “The Stranger” in 2001. It must have been the same year I also read Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” – both works as short as they are absurd and profound.
************
Then I must have moved on to “The Plague”, which is said to be the author’s best work. I was disappointed, and abandoned my plans to finish his other books in my shelf. Maybe it’s time to return to them. (Jeez, I even have my aunt’s student copy of “The Rebel”, which is even older than me!) Or maybe I should start on his philosophical essays…
