Friends, Brothers and Fellow Citizens: We is united in a patriotic cause. The time has come when we must either make a stand or be downtrodden by the disciples of avarice and greediness. They wants it all, and when we comes to them they says we must take the papes at their own price or leave ’em. This ain’t no time to temporize. Is you all still with us in the cause?
(“Sure! Sure!”)
Well, then, we’ll go ahead with the warfare, same as we done yesterday. Let no guilty man escape. Lay for ’em and give it to ’em hot.

Telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn’t seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she ‘owes’ another person any type of physical affection when they’ve bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life,“ the piece reads.

It also offers insight from Girl Scouts’ developmental psychologist Dr. Andrea Bastiani Archibald, who says letting girls decide when and how to show affection, even to family members, can help with "setting physical boundaries and expecting them to be respected” even as they get older.

Millions of people have decided not to be sensitive. They have grown thick skins around themselves just to avoid being hurt by anybody. But it is at great cost. Nobody can hurt them, but nobody can make them happy either.

Forbidden Fruit (Le Fruit Défendu) by Auguste Toulmouche, 1865, illustrating how young women have always rebelled against having their access to knowledge policed.

Nineteenth-century French and British families kept a close eye on the literature allowed to pass into the hands of unmarried girls (married women were not automatically exempt, either). While Toulmouche’s painting garnered great acclaim for its aesthetic charms when it was exhibited at the Salon of 1865, a contemporary male art critic’s sour aside summed up the prevailing attitude to independent female minds:

“I do not approve of these silly girls; instead of searching forbidden pages for the knowledge that they lack, they would do better to leave tomorrow’s lover the pleasure of instructing them in the matters of which they are ignorant.” Paul Mantz quoted in Women Readers in French Painting 1870-1890 by Kathryn J. Brown.

Queen of Air and Darkness snippet

“I can’t do this.” Helen tried to keep her voice steady, but it was nearly impossible. She hoped the strain would be covered by the sound of the waves crashing below them, but Aline knew her too well. She could sense when Helen was upset, even when she was trying hard not to show it.

“Baby.” Aline moved closer, wrapping her arms around Helen, brushing her lips softly with her own. “You can. You can do anything.”

Helen relaxed into her wife’s arms. When she’d first met Aline she’d thought the other girl was taller than she was, but she’d realized later it was the way Aline held herself, arrow-straight. The Consul, her mother, held herself the same way, and with the same pride — not that either of them was arrogant, but the word seemed a shade closer to what Helen imagined than simple confidence. She remembered the first love note Aline had ever written her. The curves of your lips rewrite history. The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. Later, she’d found out it was an Oscar Wilde quote, and had said to Aline, smiling, You’ve got a lot of nerve.

Aline had looked back at her steadily. “I know. I do.”

They both had, always, and it had stood them in good stead. But this —

“This is different,” Helen said. “They don’t want me here –“

“They do want you here.”

“They barely know me,” Helen said. “That’s worse.”

what i love about aquarius

  • you can practically spot them from a mile away. they are so unique and have memorable personalities.
  • they always have some sort of cute or quirky habit. their interests may even seem uncharacteristic of themselves, but they are truly three dimensional people.
  • they may not smile as much as others, but when they do it’s so beautiful. i love to see them laugh and figure out their sense of humor.
  • sometimes it can be hard to follow their train of thought because they’re always thinking of something new. or they’ll expect you to understand obscure jokes. either way, it’s endearing.
  • similar to gemini, they’re a great friend to just fuck around with, but they can also be quite serious.
  • though they don’t seem like the most emotional partners, their deepest feelings come out through quiet acts, like touches or favors or gifts.
  • they seem deep and intimidating but let me tell you rn……..they have a guilty pleasure. probably reads x reader fic or unironically likes emo quotes from 2010
  • they do care about love. it can be hard to tell where you stand with them at times but if you like them, find the courage to say so. if they don’t like you, they won’t pretend to. sometimes you have to take initiative with this sign, but don’t come on too strong too soon.
  • once they are attatched, they will become very protective of you and pay attention to small details about you. because of this, they are great gift givers and romantics at heart.

Gavin: What happens in the raps though is that, usually, you just pull entire paragraphs of lyrics out of your anus-

Michael: Yeah, that’s exactly where they come from, and I can never repeat them ever again because I make them up as I go.

Gavin: It’s a gift! And I just throw in the occasional word. But sometimes, I mess up because I start listening to what you’re saying. And it’s so long and I’m listening and I realise i’m not saying anything in the rap, so then I just yell.

Michael: Gavin does one of two things: He does either word or KACK-KACK-KACK-KA-KA-KACK-KA-KA-KA-KACK-KACK.

1. I wasn’t in love with you anymore, but god, this knocked the wind out of me.

2. You were just here.

3. You were just here.

4. Do you remember? The frozen food pressed to your shoulder, the way you shook with the knowledge of a barely avoided death?

5. My mouth. Yours.

6. I had been struggling with my old poems about you. You know, you were the first one I ever wrote. I had some questions for you, Cleveland. I suppose I don’t have them anymore.

7. It isn’t even seeing you kiss her that’s the problem. It’s that you share a table.

8. Maybe “wife” bothers me, too. I know how that word sounds, coming from you. Remember? Those long drives? Perhaps I still exist as your heart when you hit the road.

9. You still exist as mine when I hit the words.

10. I couldn’t read them aloud anymore, the poems. That old pain. It didn’t exist. We had chased it away with chocolate and cherries. Still, you occupy a shelf in the bright. In the cold .

11. You always have been impossibly careless with my heart. With my new lives, all of them.

12. There’s a Smiths song – if you were reading my texts I would send you it – it goes: and I’m not happy / and I’m not sad. I’m not sad, seeing you happy. She looks as full of light as I used to when you kissed me. I am glad for her. I know what you have to give.

13. It’s the loss of our friendship. More a removal. A reopened scar, from the last time. Remember, how we were friends? We’ve been so good at it. I can’t believe you won’t hear from me now. I couldn’t believe you wouldn’t hear from me, then. You know the words.

14. I just wanted to wish you well. I just. I just wanted to be what I always have been. Yours, in whatever form we decide.

15. Nearly two years since we met and you still find new ways to let me down. I think it impresses me more than it wounds.

16. You told me all about her, remember? We discovered we had both loved ghosts, since the last time you cried on my couch. Do you remember? The things that we allow to haunt us take root in the end. I need to change my sheets.

17. I wonder if I am the ghost now. The woman you never had the courage to keep. Do I haunt you, darling? I can hear your voice saying yes. Feel the reach of your arms as I spin out of them, laughing. Do I echo?

18. You kissed me like you used to, the last time. You will again, the next. You always do.

19. In a poem I never got the chance to read you, I said that you exist suspended in time. In flashes of white sheets. Bathed in orange light on the Golden Gate Bridge. Spinning me around on a cold February evening. One year ago today.

20. One year ago today, you laid next to me. We cried about something that doesn’t matter anymore. It didn’t matter then, either.

21. Do you remember the words? Of that last song at what we thought was the last breakfast. You sat me on your knee.

22. Your hands shook as you held me tight. I put my lips to your ear. Do you remember? The words. Say them with me.

23. In my own sick way / I’ll always stay true to you.

oh, shit, people actually asked me to follow up on Preaching The Good Word of A Functional Alignment System, okay

i hope you people know what you’re unleashing here

(whole thing prompted by this right here, notably including the tag #unpopular opinion: the definition of lawful and chaotic has been thoroughly twisted over the years since od&d)

So some of you (the ones who didn’t request this) might be wondering: “Alterz, why would you want to go back to the old alignment method? If people generally agree on the new alignment definitions then why confuse things by trying to change them? Is this just some old system nostalgia?”

Well 1) I’m too young by far for old system nostalgia but more importantly 2) people don’t? agree????? on the alignments???????

And that’s a problem, because the whole point of the alignments is to give some rough guidelines on how any given character is likely to act. It should be inarguable. The very fact that people can have arguments over what an alignment is means that the system has failed.

If you look in the alignment section on the more recent D&D editions, they literally have to go into detail on each alignment to explain what each one means. Worse still, for a system theoretically set up as a gradient, the different alignments are basically buckets and it gets really confusing if a character doesn’t neatly fit into one of those buckets.

Some examples from characters I have actually played: a mercenary who I labeled as neutral because I could make equally compelling arguments for why he should be lawful neutral, chaotic neutral, neutral good, and neutral evil. A hermit who at any given time was chaotic neutral or neutral good, but could never reliably be described as chaotic good.

Under the system I’m about to provide you, the mercenary is inarguably chaotic neutral and the hermit is unambiguously lawful good. End of sentence, all cleared up.

Honestly I love how laid back the Camp Camp fandom’s shipping is. You can toss headcanons about almost any ship, and people will be like ‘huh, that’s kinda cute, never thought of that lol’

You ship Harrison and Neil?
You ship a science kid who can’t for the life of him figure out how Harrison can do all these tricks, with magic boy who’s quietly flattered Neil ‘has so much interest’ in him? You ship a relationship comprised solely of jealousy and anger until it slowly flip-flops into one-sided admiration and finally mutual love and begrudging respect? Sweet

You ship Harrison and Nerris?
They hate each other, but hell, all of us can see what a great match they’d be– if they aren’t one already. Two magic dorks playing D&D, playing pranks on each other and not being ashamed to take full credit for them, tripping the other just so they can catch them and hold them romantically in their arms (Harrison usually does this, but Nerris would jump off a bridge before letting herself be held romantically by Harrison). This is a ship waiting to flourish, and the only way it could possibly get better is if we could have an entire episode dedicated to their rivalry but end it on a note of mutual regret and apology and,,.. oh wait.

You ship Nerris and Nikki?
Sure! We can all picture the adventure girlfriends sneaking off into the woods, Nikki having the time of her life while Nerris won’t stop rolling perception checks. They probably climb trees and do all sorts of zany stuff together–Nerris is be considerably less able than Nikki, but like hell will admit it. Nikki finds her persistence adorable. Sometimes, she’ll give Nerris piggy back rides– Nerris likes to pretend she’s on a dragon, and Nikki doesn’t mind humoring her. They frequently fall asleep cuddled in Nerris’s cape.

You ship Nikki and Max?
That’s not a personal fave of mine, but hey, I can see it. They’d do all sorts of outdoorsy stuff together, Max always (and sarcastically) making sure she doesn’t pull some crazy shit that’ll land her in the hospital. Nikki, in return, would teach grouchy boy to live a little.

You ship Preston and Max?
Awesome, that’s one of my OTPs. Loud theater son x snarky little shit is a yes please. Preston probably falls for Max first, but is horrible at hiding it and finally confesses with a loud, cheesy soliloquy (Max agrees to go out with him only to shut him up, then proceeds to helplessly fall for him like an idiot.) Preston loves theater and Max likes movies, so at first there’s some arguing and affronted gasps, but they end up bonding over musicals. When Drama Boy gets too heated up over something, Max is quick to temper him, either verbally (‘Preston, calm down, jesus’) or physically (eyyyy). Getting 'too heated up’ for Preston can range from getting a really good play idea to remembering Nurf, and that’s a tough range to keep up with, but Max is up for the challenge. In exchange, Preston gets Max to open up more than anyone– for someone so self-centered, he is an excellent listener. He probably steals some of Max’s best quotes and puts them in his plays– Max always notices, but never says anything (he’s flattered lol)

The Camp Camp fandom doesn’t give a shit about shared screen time, or canon sexuality (probably cause it doesn’t exist), or anything. As long as the characters have potential chemistry and the shipper stays respectful, everyone’s chill with everything.

Except Maxvid.

We don’t talk about Maxvid.
