One aspect of Héctor’s character that I adore and have never brought up - which surprises me that it has taken me this long to mention it - is how he willingly takes responsibility for his mistakes.
When Imelda is chewing him out for how he left her and Coco alone and how he (supposedly) abandoned them, he doesn’t try to make an excuse for himself. At no point does he say things like “It wasn’t my fault, I was murdered!” or “I only wanted to make a name for myself!”
He fully acknowledges that he royally screwed up and that Imelda had every right to be angry with him.
And when she’s later apologizing (or comes close to apologizing, I dunno it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie) for believing he had deserted her and Coco, he’s still insisting that no, it was HIS fault for leaving in the first place.
I love that!
It would’ve been so easy for him to play the victim card, but he never did.
And even when he gets in an argument with someone (like this post perfectly points out), he’s always quick to apologize.
Really, his responses boil down to “I screwed up, I’m sorry, and I’m hoping you can forgive me, but I understand if you don’t right away.”
I like to think that Miguel wrote and composed Proud Corazon in honor of Héctor. Remembering how proud his great, great grandfather was of him after the talent competition and everything they went through together.
This is the first time and probably only time I’ll ever post a photo of me on tumblr but, um,,, i found Miguel’s jacket at the mall with Recuérdame/Remember Me on the back and I’ve never wanted anything more in my entire life. Let’s ignore the fact that I’m a 17 year old girl who fits perfectly into a jacket meant for 9/10 year olds
