no one in the history of ever

Look, you’re doing great. Fanfuckingtastic. Yea you have your ups and downs. But that’s expected. You’re making history. You are literally the first and last YOU this universe will ever see. No matter how much the universe expands. No matter how many lifeforms are out there. There has never been and never will be another you. Every breath you take is history in motion. Successes..failures…mistakes, etc. No one has the authority to tell you you’re living your life wrong. How would they know? There’s not other You’s to base a right or wrong way on. Just keep moving forward. Keep making history. You’re an anomaly.

i remember in senior yr of high school i got a new counselor and i went to her one day just to talk about general stuff and she was concerned about the fact that i had purposely gone down a level from “honors” to “advanced” in my social studies/history course and was like, you shouldnt not challenge yourself just to get an easy A. like 1, i was never good at history and never did well in it and this course happened to be government which bored the hell out of me but i was required to take it, 2 i went down a level to account for the fact that i was taking an AP course in the subject i actually wanted to go to college for and went up a level in english to try and get some college credits, and i didnt like, want to die from workload, and 3 i was also applying for and visiting many colleges at this point so my weekends consisted of driving to and from different colleges and writing essays. like honestly can people running schools let students fucking breathe for 2 seconds god forbid i make a mental health choice and go down to a lower level

//: LOADING HISTORY …

Things are seldom what they seem, of which you know this most of all. Your exterior is something to be nurtured; bright eyes and lips which are often half-moon. Yet, your interior - your heart - is adjacent to the hiss of a firecracker, to the roar as it detonates. You are the queen - the king and all which shall follow - of a revolution, seizing your title with one hand and crushing the mountainous stature of the Corporations in another. They have tried to tie your wrists as one, confined you behind thick iron bars, but no one has ever been capable of caging such a wild bird.

//: LOADING NOTES …

As my plan evolved, we strongly believed the role of a hacker was a necessity for the assignments I foresee, but what we truly craved - a manner of which seemed a rarity - was one so skilled. I had heard tales of this infamous candidate, watched as their revolution torched the cities until the powerful fell to their knees, and yet I did not imagine the individual behind this would be who I now see before me. I have my doubts, I will admit, but I have been assured by my supporters that this candidate is not one to be underestimated. I intend to see this for myself.

//: LOADING KNOWN ASSOCIATES …

  • NYENA - You never did imagine a connection so pure would flourish in the most arduous of situations, nor would you believe yourself to be so highly regarded by someone equally skilled. You are unsure of what may come of this, your work having stolen your heart long ago, but they are an individual you refuse to overlook so easily. They are a friend first, you tell yourself, and what comes of this will exist in the hands of time itself.
  • FOX - You can recall the initial moment in which you first met, their flesh mottled shades of purple and a hunger which mirrored your own in equal measure. They told you of their desperation, beat at their chest with a rage you would sculpt into use, and a passion all those within your revolution longed to desire. They were your protege, an individual you nurtured into the finest weapon and now they are by your side once more, prepared to withstand hell and back as if it is all you both have ever known.

Favorite character you’ve written?

ok, Melandra. She’s a, predictably enough, very snarky swordswoman for hire, who I basically put into dumb situations and see how she reacts; she also has one of my favorite lines ever: “‘I know,’ I said, as insouciantly as I could manage, which, considering how many soucis I was full of, was not very. She’s The Best, through considerable training and natural talent. She also went to the best university in the Free Cities (Go Arion Gryphons!), where she majored in history.

What’s your worldbuilding process like?

"That sounds cool, let’s think out the consequences of it”

Favorite fictional world?

Melandra’s is my most…extensive, I guess; it’s super inconsistent because I created it over like four years and didn’t reread. Magic has like five different explanations. But: there is some effort towards linguistic diversity; the Free Cities themselves have character (Halling is an industrial town; Tierimar is a far northern port; Chavlis is a trading center); the explanations for magic are cool, if I ever bothered to standardize them. There’s some interesting history (the Aramathian Empire, which fell shortly before the discovery of magic, was Into education, so the populace is pretty literate; after the fall of the Empire, the Free Cities rejected larger government and all have different systems, though many of them use the same title, just with different powers); there are Western Barbarians - or well, there mostly are. The gods actually exist, because originally she was created to do a sort of Greek-flavored lesbian Brunhilde scene, and the woman she wakes is legitimately the daughter of the gods, which is annoying, but whatever; time travel works, but is strongly frowned upon by said gods.

Basically, it’s a huge mix of everything I thought was cool that day and wanted to put in; it’s a sandbox, and one I love to come back to.

louisa may alcott, w. h. auden, jane austen, james baldwin, charlotte brontë, lord byron, truman capote, willa cather, emily dickinson, e. m. forster, langston hughes, christopher isherwood, henry james, federico garcía lorca, christopher marlowe, herman melville, edna st. vincent millay, wilfred owen, marcel proust, mary renault, arthur rimbaud, siegfried sassoon, william shakespeare, gertrude stein, alfred lord tennyson, henry david thoreau, walt whitman, oscar wilde, tennessee williams, virginia woolf

what do all these beloved classic authors have in common? that’s right. none of them were straight. not a one. every single author on this list experienced same-gender romantic attraction during their lives. literary tradition is a hundred times more queer than what your high school english class would ever let you know

You know what I’m excited about?

Pauline is a super important character in Nintendo’s history. Though the story of Donkey Kong doesn’t seem like much today, the idea of an arcade game having characters with motivation and personality was incredibly novel at the time. Pauline represented a character struggle for Jumpman, and was a key part of the game’s appeal. However, ever since she got the short end of the stick. She started as a damsel in distress. She got replaced by Princess Peach. Her appearances were reduced to spin-offs, and not even the cast-oriented ones like Mario Party or Mario Kart. She was more of a weird historical figure than an active member of the Super Mario cast. But now?

Here she is. The Mayor of New Donk City, as influential as she is glamorous. Pauline’s office totally recontextualizes her absence from the main series. While Mario has been playing hero in the field, fighting for the Mushroom Kingdom and Princess Peach, Pauline has been doing it through legislation, making New Donk City better and improving the lives of potentially millions of people. Pauline’s not a princess, but she does lead. She’s just as much a hero as her Jumpman.

Ugh. Reading a whole lot of ‘queer history’ posts on Tumblr that are exclusively North American. Elsewhere in the world, we have a different history, a different lexicon and different experiences. I have a different experience of coming out 21 years ago than someone in the USA would. Our politics were slightly different here, and still are.

For example ‘queer’ is just a mainstream word here in Australia. Perhaps some very old people (I’m thinking my late grandma) may have used it to mean ‘strange’, but I only ever heard the word referring to people who weren’t of mainstream sexes, sexualities or genders. The first time I heard that it was a slur was when a teenager demanded that I stop using ‘a slur’ to identify myself on my own Tumblr.

I know Tumblr has a lot of US folks on it, but I think it’s important to remember that the USA is just one country, there are nearly 200 others. Your history is not everyone’s history. Your experience is not everyone’s experience. I will be respectful of your experiences where appropriate, but you also need to be respectful of mine. And that includes not trying to make me ashamed of the word that I use as my identity for any reason.

petrichordiak  asked:

can i hear more about the class you hijacked? (this doesnt have to be private)

I actually got out of bed just so I could go full rant about this on my  computer, so y’all buckle up (thank you for giving me this opportunity lololol)

Okay, so this happened about a year, maybe a year and a half ago. I’m gonna go ahead and make this one public for the benefit of those that didn’t follow me back then, if that’s cool.

Let me preface this by saying that I had taken literally every one of the professor’s classes before then. Partly because they were the only anthropology style class the uni offered, and partly because halfway through the second class I realized that literally everything was the same, except the books, which we never used. Even the assignments were the same, and I had perfected a system of how to do those quickly, easily, and last-minute, lol. So it was pretty much the definition of an easy A, and the prof liked me bc I was nice, actually listened to her even though I’d heard it all before, and didn’t rat her ass out for not actually teaching what she was supposed to, lol.

I should’ve known right there.

So when there was an opportunity to take a Native Americans in North America class with her, I jumped on it. I needed the hours, I obviously knew a lot on the subject already, and it would be another easy a, if history was anything to go by.

It became one of the most frustrating classes I have ever taken.

As always, the class started the same as the others. We started out learning about vocab and models. NBD, we’d get to specifics eventually, right?

Now there are about 16 to 18 weeks in your average semester.

By week 6 we had yet to learn anything about Native history. She’d assigned some reading about the moundbuilder’s archeological sites, but nothing about the modern day. Maybe she was just taking it slow, I thought, though I was bothered by her only talking about Natives in the past tense. But she’d told me in the first class I’d taken with her (years ago by now) that she was enrolled Native, so I didn’t call it out immediately.

We get to week 8, halfway through the semester, she hadn’t covered anything. No mention of treaties, modern movements for civil rights, AIM (American Indian Movement), the illegal overthrow of Hawai’i, buffalo kill offs, smallpox blankets, Chicago museum’s bullshit, NAGPRA (a law protecting grave sites and demanding the return of remains to their Nation by museums and sites, if the Nation will accept them (sometimes they allow the remains to be housed by the museum bc they’re typically more secure there, but that’s very rare)) beyond how it affected archeologists, the different regions, the language families, ghost dance, the flooding of lands by companies illegally, human zoos, RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS, THE FUCKING TRAIL OF TEARS, NOTHING.

Like your 4th grade history segment, as racist as it probably was, probably was more informative than this bitch was being, okay? And I was getting mad. Y’all know me. Native activism is a huge part of my life, and has been for years. Students were being allowed to say really racist shit unchecked. The prof wasn’t teaching jack. Misinformation was being spread, even by the prof.

It felt like even in a class dedicated to us, we didn’t matter. Our history didn’t matter.

I was fed up.

Then, she pissed me the absolute fuck off. She proceeded to spend the rest of the class talking about South America.

Now, our Indigenous family below the equator absolutely deserve to be discussed. They have so many issues that really, really need to be boosted and respected. We do not raise their voices often enough. But this was a class specifically about North America, and her reasoning for making it otherwise was racist in so many ways.

First, she changed the curriculum outside of its scope because she was “MORE INTERESTED IN SOUTH AMERICA, AND WOULD HAVE TO DO RESEARCH TO TALK ABOUT” the issues I was publicly demanding to know when she would cover. As if her personal interest and ignorance were more important than our lives.

(side note, it turns out she was lying about being enrolled and Native. Her white supremacist brother (not even kidding) had said that a Cherokee woman chief in Minnesota or some shit had enrolled them. I asked her if she meant Wilma Mankiller, the first modern female Cherokee chief. She said no, it was someone else, and in the late nineties, after Wilma would’ve no longer been Chief. I publicly called her out, and even another student jumped in to help, because there was no other woman Chief then, and there was no recognized Nation that far North. Her white supremacist brother had lied bc he felt othered while working near the Din’e on a job site, bc they didn’t include his racist ass, lol. So she’d lied her way into being allowed to teach a class she didn’t even know or care about. So at this point, I was fucking done with her, lol)

She also was showing us old propaganda films, and literally every group she discussed was being painted as ignorant, warlike savages by her and the materials. She even defended a man that intentionally exposed Indigenous peoples with no immunity to certain diseases to said diseases ‘just to see what would happen.’ She recommended his books, including ‘Noble Savages’ to us. I shouldn’t have to explain why that’s racist, lmao.

All of this is to say that I was VERY fed up, she (and the class) was VERY racist, and she was going down.

Then her foolish self decided to assign a massive project where we were supposed to ‘teach the class’ about a Native subject (y i k e s, esp. since the class was full of non-Natives). Since I was Fed Up, I decided to skip the usual schooling on cultural appropriation to instead teach everyone (including her) about just a smattering of the important things she hadn’t even mentioned in passing. :)

What followed was a 33 page powerpoint.

Apologies for any inaccuracies, and blanket tw for slurs, racism, death, csa, torture, child abuse, etc etc etc

(I added all the regalia pics bc they made me happy and calmed me down, which I was gonna need. I set the presentation up as “Man, I sure had trouble deciding what to make my presentation about. Should I talk about X? Y? Z? This? That? This? And so on until I reached residential schools and Reconciliation as my discussion topic.)

I hope those gifs work. If not, they should be under my “Oka Crisis” tag, or “n i fn a history” and “n i fn a protests” tags. I also had decided early to use the Nations actual names where possible.

Oh look, a quick and easy way to make people realize THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T FUCKING REFER TO US AS SLURS, and here’s how to discuss the issue without being additionally harmful.

OH LOOK, SOURCES

#FreeLeonardPeltier

Getting progressively angrier at this point. The class is smart enough to stay silent.

#MMIW #NoMoreStolenSisters. Please bring them home. Whatever it takes.

Stayed on this slide juuust long enough to stare each person in class down.

Oh look, we’re finally hitting my actual topic. Again, shit’s about to get very heavy. Please read only if you can. I will not be glancing over these to check them rn, bc I can’t. I’m sharing just for y’all to see, and hopefully reblog to educate people.

I honestly wept as I worked on this part. I can’t read it again.

Calling it out.

AYUP. Canadians are so nice and their government isn’t problematic at all

There are survivors that are my age, and younger.

Not letting them forget that this isn’t just in the past. It still wounds us.

It still hurts. We’re still recovering.

I included resources for them, including the prof, to actually educate themselves, since our school sure as shit wasn’t going to do it.

A handful of my sources.

Anyways. I was done. So fucking done. She (the prof) still tried to guide the class back and pretend that it was acceptable that she hadn’t taught them anything. I didn’t let her. I reminded them all that the only reason that this was Canada focused was bc they’d just had the Truth and Reconciliation reports, whereas the US government hasn’t put any effort into assembling data on their atrocities. Go figure.

Anyways, happy #Canada150 everybody :)

OK to reblog.

The Signs as Beautiful Things in the Universe
  • Aries: Two galaxies colliding together, the arms of them tangling up creating a cascade of stars in a bright disarray
  • Taurus: Stardust compressing together to form a new star after years of its clouds making forms you can only hope to identify as shapes
  • Gemini: A light hole and a black hole next to each other, eating and creating spacetime all at once until you cannot tell what is destruction and what is creation anymore
  • Cancer: A solar flare that launches beyond its star system, the threads of an alien sun tangling outer planets as it dances throughout the universe
  • Leo: A storm on a planet with such a radically different atmosphere, that the rain is shaded rainbow and the clouds eternally colored sunset, this hurricane having lasted for over a thousand years
  • Virgo: Sitting atop a rogue planet which does not have a solar system to call home, watching the most perfect view of the stars that has ever been before it finally reaches a star, experiencing the first sunrise in this planet's three-billion year history
  • Libra: Sitting atop a moon that orbits a planet made of diamond, so when the sun lines up, it shines brighter than even galaxies
  • Scorpio: The planets of a system with over a thousand satellites align, seeing one of the few pieces of perfect symmetry in the universe
  • Sagittarius: Sitting on a planet where the rain is made of glass, the gravity being light enough so it won't hurt you when it lands, the sunset reflecting off each of the slow-falling pieces into a cascade of colors
  • Capricorn: Planets that orbit a black hole perfectly, moving slower than the rest of the universe but also meaning they last longer, allowing them to flourish for near eternity
  • Aquarius: Watching a meteor that's been travelling for eons so large it picks up smaller satellites along the way, travelling in an endless vortex across a thousand alien night skies
  • Pisces: The center of a point in the universe where colors unimaginable surround you, the stars highlighting cosmic dust that makes you feel like you're not watching clouds, but celestial titans with no form

Between Two Lungs by caramelle/caramelkru

Cassian doesn’t exactly mean to, but as he’s coming up from his bow, he sort of accidentally on purpose makes eye contact with the young Erso heiress.

Her glance merely passes over him, and her face remains perfectly and diplomatically blank.

And yet, somehow, he instantly feels like he’s already managed to offend her.

The 10 Steps to Impeach a President

It won’t be easy to impeach Donald Trump. No president in American history has ever been convicted on articles of impeachment.

Only two presidents so far have been impeached by the House and had that impeachment go to the Senate for trial. The first was Andrew Johnson, in 1868, when the Senate came one vote short of convicting him. The next was 131 years later, in 1999, when Bill Clinton’s impeachment went to the Senate. 50 Senators voted to convict Clinton, 17 votes short of what was needed.

What about Richard Nixon? He resigned early in this process, before the House had even voted on articles of impeachment. And then his successor, who had been his vice president, Gerald Ford, gave Nixon a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes he might have committed against the United States while president.

This isn’t to say Trump couldn’t or won’t be impeached. Only that it’s a long and drawn-out process.

It all revolves around Article I Sections 2 and 3 of the Constitution, and rules in the House and the Senate implementing those provisions.

Step 1. It starts in the House Judiciary Committee, when a majority of the member vote in favor of what’s called an “inquiry of impeachment” resolution.

Step 2. That resolution goes to the full House of Representatives where a majority has to vote in favor. And then votes to authorize and fund a full investigation by the Judiciary Committee into whether sufficient grounds exist for impeachment.

Step 3. The House Judiciary Committee investigates. That investigation doesn’t have to be from scratch. It can rely on data and conclusions of other investigations undertaken by, say, the FBI.

Step 4: A majority of the Judiciary Committee members decides there are sufficient grounds for impeachment, and the Committee issues a “Resolution of Impeachment,” setting forth specific allegations of misconduct in one or more articles of impeachment.

Step 5: The full House then considers that Resolution and votes in favor of it – as a whole or on each article separately. The full House isn’t bound by the Committee’s work. The House may vote to impeach even if the Committee doesn’t recommend impeachment.

Step 6: The matter then goes to the Senate for a trial. The House’s Resolution of Impeachment becomes in effect the charges in this trial.

Step 7: The Senate issues a summons to the president, who is now effectively the defendant, informing him of the charges and the date by which he has to answer them. If the president chooses not to answer or appear, it’s as if he entered a “not guilty” plea.

Step 8 is the trial in the Senate. In that trial, those who are representing the House – that is, the prosecution – and counsel for the president, both make opening arguments. They then introduce evidence and put on witnesses as in any trial. Witnesses are subject to examination and cross-examination. The trial is presided over by the chief justice of the Supreme Court – who has the authority to rule on evidentiary questions or may put such questions to a vote of the Senate. The House managers and counsel for the president then make closing arguments.

Step 9: The Senate meets in closed session to deliberate.

Step 10: The Senate returns in open session to vote on whether to convict the president on the articles of impeachment. Conviction requires a two-thirds vote by the Senate. Conviction on one or more articles of impeachment results in removal from office. Such a conviction also disqualifies the now former president from holding any other public office. And it doesn’t bar additional legal proceedings against that former president, and punishment.

So there you have it–the 10 steps that must all take place to impeach the president.

It may come in handy.

  • Thalia: Perseus Jackson! *storms toward him, flickering blue sparks* What in the name of the gods were you THINKING?
  • Percy: *balls fists* I got the flag, Thalia! *shakes flag in her face* I saw a chance and I took it!

  • Percy: You had too many on you!
  • Thalia: Oh, so it's my fault?
  • Percy: I didn't say that.
  • Thalia: Argh! *pushes him, sending a shock through him that blows him ten feet backwards into the river*
  • Thalia: *pales* Sorry! I didn't mean to—
  • Percy: *ears roaring, angrily erupts a wave from river and blasts Thalia in the face, dousing her head to toe*

  • Chiron: Enough!
  • Thalia: *holds out spear* You want some, Seaweed Brain?
  • Percy: Bring it on, Pinecone Face!
  • Percy: *raises riptide*
  • Thalia: *yells, a blast of lightning comes down from the sky, hits her spear like a lightning rod, and slams into Percy's chest*
  • Percy: *is thrown back, clothes burning*
  • Chiron: Thalia! That is enough!
  • Percy: *stands up and wills entire creek to rise, swirling in a massive icy funnel cloud*
  • Chiron: Percy!
  • Percy: *prepares to hurl wave at Thalia, but sees the oracle emerging from the woods and the wave crashes back into the creek*

6-Month Update for Trump Voters

So after six months, has he delivered what he promised you?

1. He told you he’d repeal Obamacare and replace it with something “beautiful.” You bought it. But he didn’t repeal and he didn’t replace. (Just as well: His plan would have knocked at least 22 million off health insurance, including many of you.)

2. He told you he’d cut your taxes. You bought it. But tax “reform” is stalled. And if it ever moves, the only ones whose taxes will be cut are the wealthy.

3. He told you he’d invest $1 billion in our nation’ crumbling infrastructure. You bought it. But his infrastructure plan, which was really a giveaway to rich investors, is also stalled.

4. He said he’d clean the Washington swamp. You bought it. But he’s brought into his administration more billionaires, CEOs, and Wall Street moguls than in any administration in history, to make laws that will enrich their businesses, along with former lobbyists, lawyers and consultants who are crafting new policies for the same industries they recently worked for.

5. He said he’d use his business experience to whip the White House into shape. You bought it. But he created the most chaotic, dysfunctional, back-stabbing White House in modern history, in which no one is in charge.

6. He said he’d close “special interest loopholes that have been so good for Wall Street investors but unfair to American workers.“ You bought it. But he picked a Wall Street financier Stephen Schwarzman to run his strategic and policy forum, who compares closing those loopholes to Hitler’s invasion of Poland.

7. He told you he’d “bring down drug prices” by making deals with drug companies. You bought it. But now the White House says that promise is “inoperative.”

8. He said that on Day One he’d label China a “currency manipulator.” You bought it. But then he met with China’s president and declared "China is not a currency manipulator.”

9. He said he wouldn’t bomb Syria. You bought it. But then he bombed Syria.

10. He called Barack Obama “the vacationer-in-Chief” and accused him of playing more rounds of golf than Tiger Woods. He promised to never be the kind of president who took cushy vacations on the taxpayer’s dime, not when there was so much important work to be done. You bought it. But in his first 6 months he has spent more taxpayer money on vacations than Obama did in the first 3 years of his presidency. Not to mention all the money taxpayers are spending protecting his family, including his two sons who travel all over the world on Trump business.

11. He said he’d force companies to keep jobs in America. You believed him. But despite their promises, Carrier, Ford, GM, and the rest are shipping jobs to Mexico and China.

12. He said he’d create coal jobs. You believe him. He hasn’t. But here’s what he has done: Since 1965 a federal program called the Appalachian Regional Commission has spent $23 billion helping communities in coal states fund job retraining, reclaim land, and provide desperately needed social services. A.R.C. helped cut poverty rates almost in half, double the percentage of high-school graduates, and reduce infant mortality by two-thirds. Trump’s first proposed budget eliminates A.R.C.
