BCM Gunfighter History : Travis Haley

An Exercise in Compromise

Hanging in my office, is a clone of the rifle I carried on two combat tours(Iraq and Liberia). It’s a reminder of where I came from, where I stand today, where I am going and why I am going there.

While serving in 2nd Force Reconnaissance in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, my unit started seeing radical advances in small arms and light weaponry via the SOPMOD program. Suddenly, carbines could quickly be fine tuned for specific missions by mounting night vision systems, laser aiming devices, weapon lights and red dot optics to the 1913 Picatinny Rail Systems on the upper receiver and handguard.

These technologies opened up whole new tactics, techniques and procedures that could be employed to prosecute our mission of specialized reconnaissance, ambush and direct action raids.

Despite the additional capabilities the SOPMOD program delivered, opinions were sharply divided on the program. Some saw these tools as a burden, adding a lot of “crap” that would only increase the amount of weight our Marines carried on mission for little tangible benefit. A maxed out M4 could run up to 14 pounds, but we didn’t need every component for every mission.

The SOPMOD accessory package that my platoon ended up running included almost two pounds of weight in mounting interfaces alone. When I challenged this, I got a typical Marine Corps answer, “Because that’s what you are issued, now quit asking irrelevant questions Too Speed.” (Too Speed was my call sign)

I couldn’t accept that answer. It was an institutional answer that repeated a party line and the lives of my teammates were, and will always be, more important than not rocking the boat.

After some trial and error, the first mod I made was to ditch the Surefire M951 Weapon Light and replace it with a Surefire 6P in a shotgun tube light mount that I scored at a sporting goods shop near base. After swapping the 6P tail cap for the M951 remote switch assembly, I then ran the tape switch on the left side of the 203 so activating the light wouldn’t impact my weapons manipulation.

Getting a weapon light in tight with a rail and shaving weight off the interface was something I would spend the next 10 years fiddling with before I had a eureka moment and Haley Strategic Partners released the Thorntail Adaptive Series of light mounts, currently in use by military, security contractors and law enforcement worldwide.

This time was a defining moment for me, as it was when I first started tweaking and eventually building original components for my platoon based on the unique requirements of our missions. These experiences of shaving weight, improving ergonomics and finding a balance between capability and utility, would drive the development of so many of the components I have commercialized in my post-service career.

Colt M4 with 14.5” Barrel
Colt M203 40 mm Grenade Launcher
Knights Armament RAS Handguard
PEQ-2 IR Aiming Laser
Surefire Classic 6P with a custom “Simply Dynamic” mount
Boone & Packer Redi-Mag
Simply Dynamic Multi-Mission Sling (commercialized by Magpul as the MS3)

Prior to the invasion of Iraq, Force was trained up for both Green Side(reconnaissance) and Black Side(direct action) missions, with the assumption we would be tasked to one or the other. However, when we entered Iraq, our platoon found ourselves doing a combination of both at the same time. Force Recon is a special operations unit that prepares the battlespace and gathers intelligence for the MAGTF(Marine Air Ground Task Force) and then prosecutes specialized targets as directed.

With a few days under our belts, the entire platoon started striping gear and mags, looking for that perfect balance of speed, utility and capability. If you can’t move, you can’t be effective. Most of the Marines went from 13 rifle magazines to between five or six. I ended up with four on my vest and two taped together on my carbine with riggers tape and offset with a stick.

Force Recon ran low signature loads outs, often working out of vehicles(mil and civilian), and running a double mag on the carbine meant I had 60 rounds at the ready. When I saw the “Redi-Mag” in a copy of Shotgun News, I ordered it and had it delivered to me overseas. Despite the weight, the Redi-Mag was more versatile than the old riggers tape and stick, and cut my carbine reloads to sub one second.

I no longer run a Redi-Mag because there are so many excellent belt mounted magazine pouches available today, that I can reload at almost the exact speed as from a Redi-Mag. That said, you will sometimes find them on my house and car guns, as I do not expect to be kitting up if someone breaks into my house or I find myself engaged with an active shooter around vehicles in the streets.

The M203 is a vital component to small and agile units, like Force, who operate in small units in semi and non-permissive settings. It becomes even more essential in worst case scenarios where the mission is compromised or the unit is outright ambushed by an enemy force.

We prepared for scenarios where 203s could be employed for a hasty breach, in instances where a short count/stack was not possible. Also, as a posturing tool to achieve immediate fire superiority in the face of an ambush. Finally, we practiced employing them to suppress fortified enemy positions in buildings by putting accurate fire through windows or open doors.

In fact, in the first gunfight I was involved in during OIF, I put this into practice, pumping 40mm HEDP(High Explosive Dual Purpose) rounds through windows of enemy positions 50 meters out. This fire created instant hate and discontent on target, where crew served weapons and M4s did not offer as much of an immediate positive effect. We had never trained to fire the M203 at such a close distance for safety reasons, but I held at the top of the window frame with my Aimpoint and the round went straight where I wanted it.

The MEUSOC 1911 has an almost legendary reputation among 1911 and handgun enthusiasts. One of the most high performance handguns ever built, the MEUSOC 1911 we ran was hand built by Marine Armorers from the Precision Weapons Section at MCBQ (Marine Corps Base Quantico). They fine tuned our 1911’s, hand selecting barrels, link pins, sear springs, ejectors, firing pin stops, mainspring housings and mainsprings. Slides were custom built by Springfield Armory with beavertail safeties and recoil spring guides by Ed Brown, Novak rear sights, Wilson Combat extractors + mag release buttons, and King’s Gun Works ambi thumb safeties.

Force ran the 1911 specifically in direct action raid or ambush missions. It was not a primary and would only come into play if our carbines had run dry or malfunctioned. We carried 10 round magazines with 230 Grain 45 ACP. More than enough to deal with any immediate situation and then refocus on the carbine to get it back into action.

On DRP(Deep Reconnaissance Patrol) Missions, I personally chose my Berretta M92, which was our only 9mm alternative at the time. The flatter trajectory at range of the 9mm and the larger magazine meant more bullets to deal with more problems in the event my carbine was down or permanently disabled.

When I later worked as a security contractor on Ambassador Bremmer’s detail with Blackwater, we would run Glock 17s. But in the end, the mission drives the gear. But more importantly, the mission drives the man.

When I first started making gear, I was doing it to help keep my guys alive. When I started my first company, Simply Dynamic Tactical, I wasn’t in it to get rich. I was doing it to pass on what I learned in combat and to provide tools that would stack the deck in the favor of the men and women who were going overseas or out on our streets as warfighters, law enforcement or private citizens.

Surviving war is an awesome responsibility. For those who have been in combat, you never forget the brothers you lost. When you are one of those who made it back, you carry a weight that is difficult to put into words. I was lucky to have known such great men in my life. I was lucky to have a second family closer than any people I will ever know.

As I approach the 5th year in business with Haley Strategic Partners, we have tried to bring this industry together and to stay focused on that one mission. Enable brave men and women to complete their missions as safely as possible. Through training, through gear and through mindset.

Stay Sharp and be safe,

Im really sick and tired

… of people claiming that the gun community / lobby groups are unnecessary since the government “doesnt care about passing gun laws.”

Lets ignore the ethical argument- im sure you all know where i stand on guns re: ethics and civil rights.

Here is the latest list of anti-gun legislation filed as a response to the Las Vegas tragedy since 10/1/2017:

U.S. House of Representatives

HR 3947 – Bans parts and accessories that increase the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm

HR 3962 – Bans online sales of ammunition

HR 3984 – Repeals the Lawful Protection in Commerce law that would allow lawsuits against FFL’s and manufacturers

HR 3986 – Would require the placement of tracking ID into ‘all’ firearms sold in America

HR 3987 – Would require a fee to purchase a firearm through NICS and use these monies to fund the CDC to conduct research on gun violence that was previously found to be biased by Congress

HR 3998 – Bans firearms for known or ‘suspected’ terrorists; note that there is process to being put on the terror watch list. It is entirely arbitrary and has no method of prevention or even notification to the subject.

HR 3999 – Bans parts that increase the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm

HR 4018 – Institutes a ‘3’ day waiting period nationally for purchase of handgun

HR 4025 – Expands reporting of multiple firearms sales

HR 4052 – Would ‘ban’ possession and transfer of large capacity magazines (More than 10 rounds)

HR 4057 – Expansion of Prohibition for firearms ownership for being on the Terrorist Watch List

HR 4064 – Limits on sale of binary explosives (Tannerite, primarily- the most common reactive target compound in the US)

U.S. Senate

S. 1915 – Would require all firearms to be personalized for restricted access and use. This includes within the home for defense- if you buy a pistol for home defense, your wife cannot use it to fend off an attacker while you’re on a trip.

S. 1916 – Bans parts and accessories that increase the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm

S. 1923 – Expands background checks of firearms

S. 1939 – Repeals the Lawful Protection in Commerce law that would allow lawsuits against FFL’s and manufacturers

S. 1945 – Would ‘ban’ possession and transfer of large capacity magazines (More than 10 rounds)

Ive had people tell me i need to “chill out” about the gun stuff because it is a “nonissue.” this is untrue. Every day, more and more legislation is put forward that would unilaterally turn many upstanding american citizens into felons despite them having done nothing wrong. Every single day the government attempts to put forward bans and restrictions on one of our 10 most fundamental rights- bans and restriction that by DEFINITION include confiscation or mandatory forfeiture of personal property despite having done no crime.

Do not mistake the fact that laws like these have been beaten for the idea that the fight is over. It is purely by the combined efforts of the gun community as manifested through the various lobbying groups that we have held out.

So no, until the barrage ceases, im not going to put down my metaphorical shield and spear- im going to lock aegis with other gun advocates and stand fast under the arrows.

Which Path will you Choose - Round Two!

We’re baaaaaaack! Yes, friends, today marks the launch of everlark-your-own-adventure’s second choose your own adventure!

The rules and format will be the same as in our previous round, however this time each installment will be a bit longer, up to 2,000 words. Followers will have two days to vote on where the story goes next. Our volunteer authors will have five days to write the next part of the story based on your chosen direction. No fic will last more than 10 rounds.

did i ever tell u guys about the customer who talked my manager into giving them free diamond jewelry because they had been overcharged for something, drove back to the store after closing hours, got mad that we werent still open after clearly posted closing, came back again the next day, got the price adjusted plus the $5 cash legally required by the state of michigan when someone is overcharged, and were still mad because of how far away they live from the store

“we had to come all the way back here” well no you didnt HAVE to, you decided the $2 price discrepancy on your receipt was worth more to you than the $10 in gas for the round trip, and the fact that youre mad that we werent still open after closing is not my problem?

Around the World 100,000 Times

The International Space Station is a microgravity laboratory in which an international crew of six people live and work while traveling at a speed of five miles per second (or 17,500 miles per hour), orbiting Earth every 90 minutes.

Monday, May 16, marks the International Space Station’s 100,000th orbit!

That’s more than 2,643,342,240 miles traveled! Which is also like 10 round trips to Mars, OR nearly the distance to Neptune!

The space station has been in orbit for over 17 years, and during that time, over 1,922 research investigations have been performed. More than 1,200 scientific results publications have been produced as a result.

Important studies like the VEGGIE experiment, which is working to grow plants in microgravity, and the Twin’s Study, which is studying the impacts of microgravity on the human body, are helping us on our journey to Mars. Using this unique orbiting laboratory as a place to conduct research is helping us learn important things for future deep space missions.

There have even been 222 different people that have visited the space station. This includes the current crew that is working and living on orbit.

Did you know that the space station is the third brightest object in the sky? If you know when and where to look up, you can spot it on your own! Find out when and where to look up HERE

Fifty years ago citizens were not considered a threat. You could buy machine guns and dynamite at your local hardware store. Fast forward fifty years and our elected government considers us such a threat that we can’t be trusted with more than 10 rounds and fireworks. I have to ask what has changed in fifty years, the citizens or our government? Why would they think we are a threat. Why do they cripple our economy. Why do they tax us to death and pay people to do nothing. Why do they divide us racially and by gender to make us weak as a nation. Why do they dumb down our children and teach them all alike. Why do they legalize drugs and open our borders to anybody and anything that wants to come in. Why do they pass laws to destroy our families and marriages. Why do they want to cripple our military while at the same time build huge internal bureaucracies that arm themselves with billions of rounds of ammo, tanks, humvees, and high explosives. What will our beloved country be like in 10 more years. I doubt I will live that long but I feel sorry for the youth who really don’t know any different. May God bless them and protect us all from evil hearts.

Fever: A Luke Hemmings Fanfic Part 11

Part 10 recap

You’re on a plane back to London. Luke has to go back to playing shows there, and for the time being, you have nowhere to stay, so Luke insists you join them in London.

The whole 22-hour flight (and one stop), your mind is elsewhere. All you can think about is what to do, when to tell him? Or if to tell him at all? When you’re a few hours away from Heathrow, you turn to see Luke, heavily asleep next to you. He’s just as he used to be when you used to sleep in the same bed. His mouth hangs wide open, and he makes soft breathing sounds. You hate how he has no clue that you’re considering leaving him. of course, you’ve never really ever been on the same page, even both all the real problems happened between you two. You just wish that for once, Luke could tell there is something wrong.

Luke’s head jerks in his sleep and he jolts awake. He catches you watching him, and he smiles lazily. “Good morning. Have you slept at all?”

“No, I can’t fall asleep,” you reply. Your mind’s been running non-stop like a factory, smoke pouring out and all. He just continues to look at you with that horribly content smile on his face. Luke reaches over and pulls your hand into his. He brings it to his lips and kisses you.

“Are you excited to go to London? You get to see all the lads again. It’s been a while hasn’t it?”

“Yeah, not since the last time I saw you before you came there.”

“They’ll probably be just as excited as me to have you there. They lost you too when you left, you know.” Great, now if you leave Luke again, you won’t only be hurting him. You’ll be letting down the whole band too. Fuck. This isn’t really making it easier on you to do the right thing.

“Can’t wait to see them too,” you lie.

Luke holds your hand in his the rest of the way to Heathrow, and all through the airport. It’s not until you arrive at the London apartment they’ve rented that he lets go of your hand to retrieve his keys. They tinkle against the lock, almost like a bell, sounding a warning alarm, saying ‘turn back now before you become attached’.

The minute you’re through the door, it’s like you’re stepping back in time. Are you really the only person who has changed through all this? You look around and see the room is messy as it always is when the 5sos boys are involved. PS4 controllers lay on the floor near the flat screen TV, dirty cereal bowls sit on the marble kitchen counter, and suitcases are strewn about, losing their stuffing (boxers and band tees, and other guy things).

“MICHAEL! ASHTON! CALUM!” Luke calls out to the abnormally quiet house. He looks at his watch.  "Oh, shit,“ he says. "It’s still early, we’ve probably just woken them up.”

Sure enough, the three boys emerge from different rooms and stand at the top of the staircase, rubbing their eyes, their fluffy bedhead sticking up in all directions. But they wake up pretty quickly when they see it’s you.

“(y/n)??!!” They say at different times. They descend the stairs with twice as much energy as they had no more than 10 seconds ago. After their multiple rounds of spine-cracking, death-grip hugs, Ashton is the first to speak.

“What are you doing here?”

“We’ve made up,” Luke says triumphantly, not letting you answer.

A chorus of “are you serious???”’s and “that’s great!”’s ensues, followed by several more grizzly bear hugs.

“Guys, let her put her shit away,” Luke says, prying their hands off you. You follow him up the stairs and into one of the rooms. His stuff already dominates the room. “I thought you’d be fine with sleeping in here with me,” Luke shrugs. You nod, robotically. Breaking Luke’s heart again is going to be much harder than you expected. He already wants to sleep in the same bed again.

“I’ll let you get situated and check out the house. Um, I’m just going to fill the guys in on–us,” Luke says. You stare at him, and he just nods once and closes the door behind you. Immediately, you reach for your cell phone. You find the number you’re looking for and make the call. You only call this person in drastic circumstances. They pick up after a few rings.

“(y/n)? sweetie? are you crying?” you hear the familiar comforting voice resonate from your speaker.

“No, but I’m pretty damn close,” you sniffle, feeling your eyes grow watery at the signal.

“Language, missy,” your mother scolds, and you just laugh on the other side.

“I don’t know what to do,” you whisper into the phone. You’ve never felt this lost in your own head before. You’ve always been the type to know what to do, that is, until Luke hijacked your life.

“Honey, you’re going to have to bring me up to speed on the situation.”

You recount the whole story from the point where you ran into Luke in London.

“…and now I’m here back in London with Luke. The thing is, I don’t know if that was the right choice, mum. I love Luke, but everything’s just become so complicated now and it’s all wrong. I’ve been thinking of going back home ever since I got on that plane with him.” You listen to your mother reply with her two cents. “Yeah, yeah, I know I shouldn’t have came here with him in the first place.”

You spin on your heels suddenly when you hear one of the guys burst through the door. Never could there exist a worst time for Calum to stumble in on your conversation.

“Sorry, I thought Luke was in here. Um, okay.” Cal scratches his head awkwardly.

Your thoughts swim in a whirlpool of terror. “Please don’t say anything to him!” You blurt.

“The only reason I’m not going to tell him is because I don’t want to get tangled up in your guys’ never-ending pile of shit you call a relationship.” He turns to leave the room, in turn leaving you with a rock in your gut.

“Cal–” you say, but he cuts you off.

“You both are so messed up.”

“Don’t you think we both know that!” You retort, your voice wavering in your throat. You want to yell, but you can’t let Luke here.

“You guys need to figure this out, because we’re all getting real sick of this. It’s past time to throw in the towel.”

“This has nothing to do with you. You have no right to tell us how to fix it,” you spit. Calum’s never been your favorite in the group, just because he can be a hot head sometimes and doesn’t know when to shut up.

“Bullshit, (y/n)! You know who had to try to convince Luke from not fucking up your relationship with Brad? You know who’s been trying to get Luke’s mind off of you this whole time? I have done more for the both of you than you with ever thank me for. So, stop giving me these sad excuses. Stay with Luke or go home. Those are the choices. Stop making it so fucking hard on yourself.” Calum slams the door behind him, and you hear a quiet string of curses from the other side before you hear him thudding down the stairs.

You sit on the bed. Your head throbs out of anger and confusion. You hate how right Calum is. You have two choices. Stay or go. That’s it. So why is it so damn hard to pick between the two?

“So what’ll it be?” You hear from the doorway.

You bring your face out of your hands to see Luke standing there. He’s heard it all, and you didn’t notice him there because you were too busy wallowing in your self pity. Well, he knows the same two choices exist. He’s repeated the ultimatum.

“Luke, I–”

“Go, (y/n).”

In the mens health competition did you know that the public voting only counts for 10%? I don't really think that is fair i dont know where the other 90% of the decision will come from but i think the public's voice should count for more than 10%

I just looked at the rules.

Advancement in the initial round of voting, the quarter finals, and the semi-finals is based 20% on votes and 80% on the judges, (Editors at Men’s Health). As they move through the voting process, finalists will participate in phone- and in-person interviews with the judges. The final decision will be made entirely by the judges.

They are looking for someone to represent their magazine, so I understand why it’s not all about the votes, but I agree that the voting should count for at least 50%.

Hopefully the editors at Men’s Health will recognize the value of having a trans man represent their magazine. Aydian is soooo far ahead in the poll. He’s in first with 42,600 votes. Second and third place have 9,400 and 3,700 votes each.

You can vote for Aydian here!
