no matter how many years go by

this is going to piss some straight people off but listen. gay/trans 18 year olds know more about what it means to be lgbt than cishet professors with graduate degrees who have studied it their whole lives do. we may not know everything judith fucking butler has written and we may have been deprived of learning the bulk of lgbt history but cishet people, no matter how many degrees, will never fully understand what it means to be lgbt. they just can’t.

And I believe a grading system must be abolished for there to be equal access to education, if a person isn’t proficient in a certain subject, they should not receive a failing grade, they should be given more chances to comprehend the material.

Grades are unnecessary. Of course we need to know how well someone understands certain material, but this should not harm their chances of furthering their education due to GPA records.

Equal access to education to me means that, if you keep going through learning what you care about, no matter how many times, once you finally pass you can move up, and learn that material, and so on.

Some people take longer to learn things, some people need to go over material multiple times to truly grasp the subjects they’re concerned with. This should not be penalized, this should not hinder people’s education.

If a person takes 40 years to be a proficient doctor … at the end of the day they’re still a proficient doctor, they just took longer to get there.

If someone never makes it through all of the material they needed to perform in a field they’re passionate about, at least they got to study and be around it, and can continue to be around it, because it’s something they enjoy.

You do not have to be good at something to want to learn about it. Learning should be encouraged, failure is inevitable in many circumstances, but that doesn’t mean people can’t grow from that, or enjoy every second of what they did learn.

Do not penalize people who want to learn, encourage them, allow them the space they need to fail and allow them the space they need to eventually succeed.

The Signs as Liminal Places
  • Aries: A rock concert bathroom, the walls are shaking from the bass.
  • Taurus: The White Castle drive-thru at night. The speaker is buzzing and no one is at the window. Your car lights aren't on anymore.
  • Gemini: Under a bridge while it's raining. The cars are rumbling overhead almost as loud as the thunder. It's not cold.
  • Cancer: The bedding section of a department store. Music doesn't make it this far, the only sound you hear is your hand running across a white duvet.
  • Leo: Your living room at four a.m. The sun is trying to rise but the mist outside is too thick. Your television is on but the sound was turned off hours ago.
  • Virgo: The first gas station on your personal road trip, a bell makes an unfamiliar ding as you walk in. There's nothing here that you need.
  • Libra: After the last movie of the night. The lights are shutting off in odd places of the theatre and you're still holding your 3-D glasses.
  • Scorpio: The door and window section at a hardware store. Old school music plays from far overhead making it muted but audible. The section checkout desk is empty.
  • Sagittarius: A small town laundry mat that should've been shut down years ago. You can hear pool balls rolling on a table as the owner plays alone.
  • Capricorn: A straight stretch on a road with no streetlights. You don't know how fast you're going and it doesn't matter-there hasn't been a soul in twenty miles.
  • Aquarius: The small airport where you catch your connecting flight. Every now and then you hear the wheels of a suitcase skate across the laminate. It's bright in the terminal but you can feel the darkness of night seeping through the glass.
  • Pisces: The brightly colored fun-center of Wal-mart. Every so many minutes a crane game begins playing on it's own.

I hope everyone who is realizing that they’re a lesbian in 2017 knows how many people support them and that they will always have a community. No matter how old you are or what your past relationships have been like, your lesbianism is good and real and only you can make decisions about where to go from there.

It can be scary, but I believe in you. This is going to be our year😘💖 ❤️️💕

Stardust!AU:

Lance has always felt like an outcast in the small town of Wall, always bullied for his strange marks and long ears that he tried so hard to hide in order to fit in. The only one who doesn’t seemed dazed by his appearance is his adoptive brother, Shiro, the one who found him near the wall. No matter how many times he had tried to ask him about where he came from Shiro never gave any answers. Lance only knew that he came from across the wall.

Is not until a star falls to the other side and the fate of his heart depends on finding it that he decides to go against the rules and cross the wall, trying not only to get the pretty jewel to his true love, Nyma, as a proposition of marriage, but also trying to find his lost sister, the one Shiro met so many years ago.

Draco, 8th year?? He needed to shake the war, and shake himself a bit. He decided to go into muggle London, because why not, everything else in his world was on its head. Then he saw it: the leather jacket. And well, wouldn’t that just piss off his dad, and everyone, and he needed to change. So he bought it. The smoking came along after. First it was after one too many drinks with Zabini. Then it became something that helped to fill the holes in his soul. But no matter how many drags he took, the smoke would always escape.

Until he went back to school. And shit, Harry must have done a double, triple, quadruple take seeing Draco sitting in an archway smoking, in a leather jacket with his hair hanging loosely around his face.

And maybe one day Harry took his Gryffindor courage and sat across from Draco. And Draco would sneer and tell The Chosen One that this wasn’t his Golden Throne, for Merlin sake could Draco just be in peace for once. But Harry wouldn’t leave because Draco’s voice lacked the usual venom. So they sat for a while. Day after day, which soon turned to weeks, and greetings turned to conversations, and insults turned to jokes.

The smoke still couldn’t fill the holes left in his soul, but maybe, just maybe, the small, warm seed of something else growing in his heart could.

And Harry would smile, because he felt it too.

Jeon Jungkook was someone nobody really understood. Everybody wanted to be with him, and nobody knew why. There wasn’t like there was anything good that came out of it. All of his old relationships were the exact same, it’s been that way since high school when you first met him. He would date the girl for a few weeks, and then break up with her. That was it.

Girls were attracted to the bad boy vibe he gave off. There was something about him that every girl wanted to tame, but none could. It didn’t matter how many hearts he broke, or what the girls said about him because in the end they would all have dated him again if they had the chance. And that was what made you so different.

After being his friend for three years, not once had you dated him or been in a romantic relationship with him.

Everyone was jealous of you, because you were the only girl he actively hung out with that he wasn’t dating at the time. Jungkook and you had become friends in high school and ended up going to the same college, and here you two were. You would watch him date several girls, and every time you would get jealous.

Sure, they thought that you being his friend was unfair. They thought that it wasn’t fair that you got to hang out with him all the time, apparently Jeon Jungkook was an object that was meant to be shared between everyone, and you weren’t allowed to even think about being close to him.

You didn’t like that idea. You didn’t like the whole bad boy vibe, you didn’t like the fact that he went around and broke the hearts of innocent girls, you didn’t like that he looked at everyone else that way except you. It was like there was something about you that just wasn’t appealing to him.

It hurt to know that, but you never said anything. You would never have traded being Jungkook’s friend for anything. Just being able to hang out with him and talk to him was good enough for you. It was torturous, but it was worth it. Jungkook had become someone he wasn’t, and you were the only one who got to see the real Jungkook.

When it was just the two of you hanging out in your dorm at night, he would tell you about his fears, his insecurities, his problems. The two of you would lay in bed and just talk for hours, nothing romantic or sexual about it. You would sometimes fall asleep and he would drape a blanket over you before making a bed on the floor and falling asleep. It was things like that that made you fall for your best friend.

Jungkook was someone nobody understood, except you.

fic prompt: Isak married even, a moment between Isak and his best buddy/man Jonas before the vows

“Man, I can’t believe you made it to twenty-four without learning how to tie a fucking tie. What the hell,” Jonas says, rolling his eyes. And it’s not like Isak can’t do it by himself—he’s just so nervous that his fingers had felt like lead. But he’s about to marry the love of his life, and that should be an excuse. Even always has this effect on him, no matter how many years they’ve spent together. It’ll be a dark day when the mere thought of Even doesn’t make Isak feel like a fumbling mess again, seventeen years old and learning what it felt like to fit in his own skin for the first time.

Isak takes a deep breath. He’d promised himself he wouldn’t get sentimental until the vows. Even’s no doubt going to be sappy as hell, and all Isak has is a sweaty index card tucked into his jacket. He’s written and rewritten them, but no words can ever capture all that Even means to him. Isak isn’t sure he even knows the full extent of it yet, not when they have years ahead to figure it out.

Jonas must sense his mood, because he chuckles as he puts the finishing touches on Isak’s tie. “Who would’ve guessed you’d be the first one out of all of us to get married?”

99% of my Magic: the Gathering collection has been stolen.

This is not a joke or a setup. I’m kinda bummed.

If anyone in the western Washington (Tacoma, Seattle) area of the United States has any questions or information, please contact me privately. I have a list of high-profile cards for anyone who would like it. I am missing nine commander decks and one modern deck as well as Modern Masters Box pulls, and the approximate value of the stolen cards is $2,200.00 USD. A police report has been filed and I have contacted local game stores and the network therein.

Where do I even go from here? Nowhere, honestly. And that’s not such a bad thing. The cards were, well, they were just cards. Things. There’s only so much attachment I can have to them. But it was a decade of collecting, so many years of fun and community, and now it’s gone. I’m still kind of numb. It’s something to work through, and no matter how much I thought it wouldn’t happen to me, well, now it did.

I have a female character in her early twenties. How realistic would it be for her to be skilled (enough to hold her own against larger opponents) in hand to hand combat in under two years? If not, what would be realistic for her to master?

It’s realistic, sort of. There’s a few minor issues that don’t really fit together here, making it (at least seem) unrealistic as written.

Practical martial arts training intended to put someone into combat lasts far less than two years. You can learn effective hand to hand techniques that you can then apply in combat in an eight week course. If you’re coming out of the military or from a police background, your hand to hand training took, at most, a couple months. Then you go back every six months to a year, and update it, meaning you learn what others have developed to counter your training, and how to deal with their counters.

Practical training isn’t so much about spending years learning how to fight, as checking in often enough to see what’s changed. When you’re dealing with untrained opponents, it really doesn’t matter. Most people haven’t been in a fight since high school, and even basic police adapted Judo from the 70s will take them down.

As we’ve said many times before, most martial arts apply to larger foes without missing a beat. This is especially true of the adapted Judo/Jujitsu which forms the core of most American police and self-defense forms. This may be a difficult concept to wrap your head around, but it is far easier to put an opponent on the ground when they’re a foot taller, and a hundred pounds heavier, than the other way around.

Depending on how zealous they are about keeping their training up to date, someone who underwent training two years ago will have gone back four to six times, to update. They may have also elected to retake their training just to, “brush up.” Either way, we’re not talking about someone dedicating a lot of their life to this.

That said, if you’re talking about someone who signed up at a Dojo, and has been taking weekly classes, there’s no way to know what they’re trained to deal with. Some recreational schools will get into practical applications for their martial art, and offer it as an optional advanced class for their students. At that point, it’s entirely dependent on her instructor if she gets in (as an adult, these would probably be open to her if she wanted). It’s also, depressingly common for a martial arts school to offer, “self-defense,” classes that are just their normal curriculum with a different advertising hook. A class like this will not prepare your character for a self-defense situation.

For reference: If you’re taking a self defense class, and the discussion doesn’t include a serious discussion on situational awareness, and/or your instructor puts a lot of faith in your ability to overcome via superior force then you’re probably in the wrong place. Real self-defense training focuses on creating an opening so you can retreat to safety (if possible). It’s concerned with your ability to escape the situation and survive, not your ability to win a fight. Sticking around and dealing with an assailant is something you would only want to consider very situationally.

Also, in case it’s not clear, when I’m talking about Police adapted Judo, it is not the same martial art as Judo. It was derived from Judo after the Second World War, and the modern martial art still shares some techniques, but there have been substantial modifications to it, in order to produce something functional for combat. Judo itself is intended to be a sport martial art, and not something you’d take into combat.

There’s also no way to know exactly how fast the school moves its students through, and how quickly your character would advance. These are all dependant on human interactions and how quickly they learn and internalize techniques. In a more traditional school, two years is not a lot of time, but a modern Dojo may move a lot faster. It all comes down to the instructor’s preferences.

That said, recreational martial artists are not (usually) trained for combat. There’s a fundamental disconnect between how practical martial artists approach techniques, and how recreational ones do. They’re often studying the exact same techniques, but with different goals in mind. The recreational martial artist is learning to perform it, the practical one is learning to apply it. This might not sound important, or could come across as irrelevant trivia, it’s not. This is a large part of why practical training is so much faster. You’re learning how to do things to your opponent, not how to perform the techniques correctly.

A character who’s spent two years taking a martial art in a recreational capacity, may be able to handle an untrained opponent (it’s actually, fairly likely, assuming they don’t make any critical mistakes, which is also quite possible), but may face serious issues dealing with a trained opponent (this will depend entirely on what each character’s training focused on). Someone who has trained with a practical focus will be able to take on an untrained opponent (assuming they don’t make any major mistakes or misjudge the situation). Ironically, they’re also far more likely to attempt to avoid direct confrontation, and try to defuse the situation non-violently, than a trained recreational martial artist would.

So, your character’s been training for two years, and you want to know what she can tackle. If she was simply going to a Dojo twice a week, that’s not combat ready. That may not even be combat ready, if the Dojo’s “self-defense” class was run by the same instructors who believe their decade training in a sport martial art is good enough for “the streets.”

If your character’s been training with a cop, or ex-military, relative/friend/rando, or been in police sponsored self-defense classes, then two years is more than enough time to be able to deal with an opponent.

There’s an unrelated issue that Michi would be irked if I didn’t bring up. (We both started typing up radically different responses to this question.) Mastery a term that gets tossed around a lot in fiction. In martial arts, two years isn’t long enough to master anything. It’s not enough time to master the basics, it’s certainly not enough time to master advanced techniques. Mastery reflects a very high baseline of skill, and can easily take decades of dedicated training. A character can become proficient in elements of a martial art fairly quickly. That is to say, they can perform them correctly, and present a solid (or effective) technique. But, mastery, in this context, is a much higher bar to hit, and not one a character will reach within the first few years of starting a martial art.

There’s one last thing, “hold her own,” is a very difficult goal. Unarmed combat doesn’t tend to equalize out like this. You either win, lose, or wear each other out in fairly short order. Combat is extremely tiring, it’s part of why real self-defense tends to focus on creating an opening and escaping. Sticking around and trying to win a fight through attrition is a losing proposition for nearly everyone. Getting a good clean shot in on someone is usually enough to create the distance you need to escape. It’s not, “winning,” but, if all you need to do is retreat, that’s all you need. If you’re going to stick around, then the goal is to take your opponent down quickly and decisively. Unarmed combat doesn’t allow for protracted dueling the way Wuxia films present it.

The minute I saw this image a fic idea popped into my head - but in true me form it took 2 weeks to actually come together into anything. Unbeta’d and about 1100 words of fluff. Post CS wedding with a side of Captain Charming feels.

A Picture Tells a Thousand Words

For close to three hundred years, the memories of Killian Jones had been curated solely by the power of his mind. Highly reliable, of course, with impressive attention to detail - as he frequently reminded Henry when he shared tales of his past life with the young author.

(And he had yet to find the lad’s eye-rolling any reason not to continue.)

With such a power of recall, there seemed little chance any of the intimate details of the day he married Emma Swan would slip into the shadowed recesses, no matter how many dark curses or damned fairies were thrown at them.

Yet he found himself drawn again and again to the simple black frame that hung on the wall of their living room, a moment of utter bliss captured perfectly in the curve of their lips and the light in their eyes as they danced together for the first time as husband and wife. He had known many a treasure over his long years on the sea, but none of those would ever be more valuable than this image, he thought, lovingly tracing a finger along the contours of Emma’s face.

“You are going to wear a track in the glass, Killian, if you don’t stop doing that.”

Emma’s arms snaked around his waist, her chin coming to rest on his shoulder. Though he couldn’t see her face, he had no doubt of the smile she was wearing - yet another image firmly locked in place without need of a photograph.

“Of all the magic I have ever come across,”  he said, turning in her arms until their foreheads came to rest together, “I think these photographs are the most powerful of all. A single moment preserved in time and yet it tells so much more of the tale.”

I'm not disappointed that the album is RP and me being upset doesn't have anything to do with the boys & how hard they work but I was kind of shocked since I spent all of my money to buy this album($ extremely expensive in my country).I really would have appreciated it if bighit didn't have such an unfair marketing system that's built purely on the hype because now I legit have nothing left and as a consumer I deserved to be told certain things & just cuz I bought the album doesn't make it right

I understand how you feel, BigHit really should have clearly stated it was a repackage of WINGS rather than Supplementary Story.

but first I think things need to be cleared up before we start accusing BigHit of things. if we take a step back, bangtan was a tiny group with a tiny fanbase with a rather tiny company with not much of a footprint in the industry. so the concepts were simpler, there were fewer albums, fewer mvs, fewer teasers, fewer trailers. as BigHit and Bangtan grew, so did their fanbase. but the fans expected a certain quality when it came to their favourite group and BigHit always delivers.

but to be able to now have multiple M/Vs per album, long conceptual interlinking storylines, the sets and locations they have, the wardrobe, the camera/lighting/sound system, to get a better dance practice studio, to be able to provide bigger and better for the boys, and for the fans, and to be able to pay all the staff (producers, managers, stylists, etc etc etc) BigHit had to find a way to obviously make more money to continue providing fans with more elaborate works with every comeback.

remember when they had to borrow a managers car in the  I Need U M/V because they didn’t have enough money to rent one to film with? and now, we see them having enough money to not only blow up a car! but hire 50 backup dancers!

BigHit and BTS rely on sales of albums, fanmeets, fansigns, summer packages, seasons greetings, etc etc to be able to continue making more elaborate things for the fans. do you think they would have been able to have 7 different mini basically short film trailers to tease the new WINGS album a year ago? no, but they were able to now because of album sales.

the thing to remember is that BigHit & Bangtan are not asking you to buy every version of an album, it does not make you less of a fan if you buy only 1 or if you don’t buy a single one. but of course like anything there are those who will collect no matter what, no matter how many versions. I understand it sucks to have thought it was going to be a new album and having bought the previous versions for it to be only a repackage with a handful of new songs, but honestly this repackage doesn’t make it any less of an important album. epilogue was a repackage and in all honesty that repackage with those 3 new songs really helped bangtan further their success. this is a business so at the end of the day, yes they want the money and they will figure out ways of doing so, but also, you have to remember it is not done selfishly and for only gain for the company, but as a gain to put back into the boys, the boys success, and the fans invested interest of the group, as well as being able to find new fans by attracting them with their highly produced and detailed M/Vs

but I also kinda want to say that as much as BigHit should have labeled it a repackage, it was also very obvious that it was going to be a repackage because it was the continuation of WINGS. it was the ‘S’ we were missing, and I highly doubt they would have released a full new album for part of another album. there are many ways to look at it, but I think it’s important to understand why, as a company, BigHit is doing it this way

Everyone says you have the worst drivers. You know they’ve never left the state. You wonder how they know.

You leave cricket shaped offerings for the seagulls on the 24th of July. Last year your neighbors didn’t. You have new neighbors. You like them. You hope they do not make the same mistake.

The tourists come to visit the red rocks. The tourists come to visit the arches. The tourists come to visit Goblin Valley. The tourists come to visit Zion’s.  The tourists come to visit Temple Square. The tourists do not leave. You do not visit tourist attractions.

You do not go swimming in Utah Lake. Your friends invite you to a bonfire on the shore. You hear screams of those who ignored the warning. Your bonfire tuns into a vigil.

There is a teacher shortage, they say. There has always been a teacher shortage. You go into teaching. You are not engaged or newly married. You do not get hired. The only teachers are those who have been teaching since before your parents were their students. New teachers quit and do not go back. They say they weren’t cut out for teaching. They look over their shoulder as they say this. They are not seen again. There is a teacher shortage, they say.

You get invited to a wedding reception. You get invited to a wedding reception. You get invited to a wedding reception. There is a wedding reception every weekend. Your friends that get married promise they will keep in touch when you see them at the reception. They say they are happy. You dread the day when you will be forced to say the same things. Your friend group gets younger and younger and you pray you have been forgotten. You leave larger and larger offerings at the receptions

Everyone speaks an additional language. You do not know where they learned Tagalog. All you know is that when you asked last their eyes glazed over and they repeated memorized stories. They offer to teach you. You back away slowly.

You only eat casseroles. You do not know where they came from. You are afraid to ask. You ignore the bones you find.

Everyone you know comes from a small town you’ve never heard of. They never speak about it, no matter how many questions they are asked.

They say Park City is just through the canyon. Whenever you go looking for it you end up driving back into the valley through a different canyon.

East is toward the mountain, they tell you. You are confused. You are surrounded by mountains.

Spring never comes. Winter and Summer battle for three months. Summer eventually wins. You worry it won’t win next year and you will have to live through another year of winter.

You are prepared for a disaster. You are grateful the tourist sacrifices have kept the earthquake at bay, but you do not know how much longer the earthquake will be sated.

An Introduction to Viktuuri

The main fandom classics, and essential reading!

Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches by Reiya (197k) Explicit
‘…Of all the rivalries in the world of sports over the years, perhaps none has become so legendary as that of Russian figure skater Viktor Nikiforov and his rival, Japanese Yuuri Katsuki…’
A single event changes the course of Yuuri’s life, throwing him into a bitter rivalry with Viktor Nikiforov that spans across his entire skating career. But as the years go on, rivalry and hatred begin to develop into something very different and Yuuri doesn’t seem to be able to stay away, no matter how hard he tries.
Hatred and love are two sides of the same coin and even though everything changes, some things are still meant to be.
Comment: Absolutely legendary fic in the fandom, but be warned, its like wading through a sea of angst and feelings. So many feelings.

Masquerade by Ashida (54k) Explicit
“Just say the word.” came the whisper as Victor stepped close, behind them Yuuri was aware of guns out and at the ready, of confused men and questioned loyalties, here Victor was offering, and Yuuri was too selfish to say no.
“Ok.” Yuuri smiled as this game of masquerade came to an end, what would happen now, he didn’t know, he would probably die, his family would come after him and try to put a knife in his back or a bullet between his eyes, none of it mattered, because together they would fight, and the rest of the world would finally burn.

Excelsior by powerandpathos (77k (WIP)) Explicit
Yuuri wanted the reporters to leave knowing one thing: That he had found Viktor in a way that they had not; that Viktor was his in the same way that he was not theirs: utterly, entirely, completely.
Yuuri has won the Grand Prix, which was everything he thought he wanted. But for Yuuri, an end to skating could mean an end with Viktor, and when two female skaters approach them with an offer that could make them or break them, they are put to the test more than ever. Can they rise higher than they already have?

Ok I'm trying to keep hope, so what if Kara is really only getting with Mon-El so that she can deny and push down her feelings for Lena? Bc if not the idek what to think just I really hope that's all it is.

Oh honey, the Swan Queen fandom has been doing this for years, and it is a beautiful and clever and necessary coping mechanism. Here. Enjoy.

Alex calls for an emergency Sisters’ Night. In fact, she demands it.

And Kara is excited, because Rao, does she need to talk to Alex. And Rao, does she need to hear Alex talk, because so much is going on with Maggie, and with her lab work to find Jeremiah, and with J’onn missing M’gann, and with just… everything.

But even more than talking, Kara just wants to snuggle on the couch with her big sister.

So when Alex lets herself into her apartment and Maggie trails in apologetically behind her, Kara bristles.

She adjusts her glasses and she forces a smile. “Hey Maggie,” she strains, reminding herself sternly that Maggie has been through so much, that Maggie was just retraumatized, that Maggie is probably going to be her sister-in-law one day, so might as well start attending Sisters’ Nights now, right?

But Alex is throwing up her hands and taking Kara by the shoulders, because she knows her sister, and she knows the war that’s raging in her head, in her heart.

“So, Kara, I lied. I want to do Sisters’ Night, just you and me. Because Sisters’ Night will always just be for us. But, tomorrow. Not tonight. I lied, and I’m sorry about that, but I was afraid you’d tell us not to come over if I told you…”

Kara backs away from Alex and furrows her brow.

“If you told me what?”

“We’re worried about you, Kara,” Maggie chimes, and holds out a bag of potstickers that Kara hadn’t noticed before, and Kara snatches them with narrowed eyes and a suspicious glare.

She sits down with a grunt and begrudgingly nods her sister and her sister’s girlfriend to do the same. Alex and Maggie exchange a glance, and it’s like they can read each other’s minds, they work together so seamlessly.

Kara feels a stab of something like jealousy, but she knows it’s not about Alex. She’s purely happy for Alex. It’s about something else, something different. Something that she hopes against hope that Alex an Maggie aren’t going to try to make her talk about, because Rao, she doesn’t know how she can handle it if they do.

She tears into the potstickers and blinks. “So, what are you worried about?”

Maggie and Alex exchange that glance again, and Alex leans forward and puts her hand on Kara’s knee.

“Kara, you know I respect you. And I respect your judgment, and I respect your heart. I love what a big heart you have. It’s what makes you a hero. But Kara, I…”

“You’re getting with Mon-El, Little Danvers, even though you really kind of seem to hate him, and that’s… we’re worried about you, Kara. Not because we don’t think you can handle yourself, or because we don’t respect your decisions, but because I… we… we know what it’s like to be with someone because you feel like you have to, not because you really want to.”

Kara nearly chokes on a potsticker, and Alex thumps her back mechanically, her eyes fixed on her sister’s face.

“That’s ridiculous,” she splutters when she finally swallows. “I don’t feel like I have to do anything, I’m Supergirl, I – ”

“Well, Mon-El doesn’t seem to respect that, and you don’t seem to think he does, either.”

“I’ve never told you anything like – what are you talking about, I – ”

“Kara,” Maggie says, her voice soft and her voice full of understanding pain, mixed with the beginnings of ironic humor. “The entire DEO heard you yelling at him. And lemme tell you, for secret agents, your people are pretty terrible at, you know. Keeping secrets.”

Alex mock-glares at Maggie before leveling Kara with a look of significant concern.

“Oh please, Detective, it’s not like any of that was a secret. Kara was shouting what a misogynist, unsupportive, manipulative, disrespectful, gaslighting, mansplaining – ”

“Nice new vocab, Danvers.”

“Thanks babe, I’m trying.”

“Alex, I – ”

“Oh, I’m sorry Kara, did you want me to stop that list?” Alex’s tone, the way she’s caressing Kara’s face, is much softer than her words. “Because I don’t have to. I have more, and they all seem to have come from your mouth in one way or another – ”

“Alex – ”

“And I love you, Kara. I love you, more than anything, more than life itself, so here’s the thing I can’t understand: why are you throwing yourself at this guy when he spends every waking minute trying to stomp all over the powerful woman that you are? It would be like me actually going for Max Lord or something – ”

“You and Maxwell Lord were a thing?”

“Ew, god, no, which is exactly why I can’t understand what you’re thinking, Kara.”

“And she’s not blaming you, Little Danvers, no one’s angry at you – ”

“No, Maggie’s right, I’m not, I just – ”

“We’re just worried, Kara. Your sister loves you, and I’m growing to love you, a lot, and hell, even J’onn asked us – and believe you me, it was as awkward as it sounds – if we could talk to you to make sure you’re really okay, because this is… we’re worried about you, Kara. So are you? Okay?”

Maybe it’s something in Maggie’s soft eyes, or maybe it’s the way Alex is stroking her hair, or maybe it’s the way they’re both going through so much of their own struggles right now, but they’re making it a point to check in with her. Or maybe it’s all of it, everything, the way his hands were too fast and his tongue too eager, the way he’s an okay guy, she supposes, but as a wayward brother or something, not as a lover, but she was so worn down and she’s just so tired and maybe it’s everything, all of it, because Kara breaks.

She breaks into her sister’s arms and immediately she feels the walls of Alex’s love rise up around her, protecting her from all her enemies, protecting her from herself.

Immediately she hears Maggie kneel down in front of the sisters, in front of her Danvers girls, a hand on Alex’s knee and a hand hovering over the small of Kara’s back until Kara nods through her sobbing that Maggie can touch her, of course Maggie can touch her, because god it feels good to be held by two women who love her for exactly who she is, not for what they imagine her to be, what they wish she were.

“I’m so…” She gasps wildly for breath and Alex kisses her forehead, smoothes her hair, rocks her, rocks her, rocks her. “I’m so scared, Alex,” she chokes through her gasping, through her tears.

“Shhh, I know, it’s okay. I’ve got you, Kara. I love you, I love you, shhhhh. Cry it out, Kara, it’s okay, it’s okay. I’m here. I’m here, always. I’m here, I’m here, I’m here.”

Tears bite at Alex’s eyes, and she glances down across Kara’s body to meet Maggie’s, and she’s almost surprised to see tears gleaming in Maggie’s eyes, as well, and she knows it’s not the time, but she also knows, beyond doubt, that she’s in love with her.

Kara grabs at the back of Alex’s sweater and is forcibly reminded of when Cat grabbed at the back of Supergirl’s suit – her suit – and it’s suddenly all too much, suddenly all needs to come out, no matter how scared she is.

Suddenly, she knows she needs to dive.

“I didn’t want to, Alex, I didn’t want to because you were just coming out and I’ve taken so much from you, so much attention, for so many years, I didn’t want to do it again – ”

“Kara, it’s okay, everything’s okay. I’m not angry, I’m not going to be angry, but what… what are you talking about?”

Alex’s face is a map of compassionate confusion and Maggie’s face is a map of compassionate realization, and she glances at Alex because here we go again.

“I was in love with James, so… so in love with him,” Kara gasps, and Maggie nods slowly, and Alex just tries to keep up as she wipes Kara’s running nose with the tissue Maggie passes her.

“And kissing him was nice, it was… he was lovely, he is lovely, and I love him, I do, but it… it didn’t feel… ka-pow.”

Alex smiles uncomprehendingly but supportively, and Maggie smiles knowingly, and they both rub soothing circles onto Kara’s skin as she gathers the courage to continue.

“And I didn’t understand it, I didn’t have to words for it, but then… but then you came out and I was doing research, for you, and I found… I found out that you can be in love, straight love, but not want to have sex with men, be asexual towards men, even though you can be in love with them… and that you can… you can also… at the same time…”

She glances down at Maggie, and Maggie nods slowly at her, a small smile on her lips, because like sister like sister.

“You can also like girls. Women. Romantically. And even sexually.”

Comprehension starts to dawn on Alex’s face now, too, and she gets flashes of Kara spending so many nights crying when Cat left National City, of her terror when Livewire got loose again, because Livewire had tried, so hard, to kill Cat.

Of Kara adjusting her glasses a bit extra whenever Lena came up in conversation.

Of Kara steadfastly refusing to lose faith in Lena, even when everything looked, well, grim.

Of Kara’s desperation to find her. Of her more-than-just-everyday-heroics willingness to die for her. Of her beautifully, passionately written article vindicating her.

“Kara,” is all Alex says, all Alex can say, as she pulls her little sister in closer, closer, closer.

“I’m sorry, Alex,” Kara chokes, pushing back, pushing away, so she can look Alex in the face. “I don’t want to take attention away from your coming out, I don’t… I don’t even know what to label it all, I just know that I… I’m so scared that if I…”

“If you don’t throw yourself into the most easily available thing – if you don’t surrender to the guilt he’s putting you through – you’ll have to confront your feelings for Lena Luthor,” Maggie supplies softly, softly, because Kara is shaking so badly, and Maggie knows that look, knows when someone needs to hear the words before they can say them themselves, and sure enough, when Maggie says it, Kara stops trembling quite so much, and her tears become of the silent variety, and she nods, nods, nods.

“Please don’t be mad,” she whispers to Alex, and Alex does nothing but shake her head and kiss her face, tears and snot and all.

“Kara, listen to me. I need you to really listen, and I need…” She glances down at Maggie as she cups Kara’s cheeks in her hands, and Maggie gives her a small smile. “I need you to really hear me. I would never, ever, ever be mad at you for loving whoever you love. However you love them. Because whoever you love, and whatever kind of love it is, whatever kind of intimacy you want with them? That’s absolutely fine. It’s absolutely perfect. You’re absolutely fine. You’re absolutely perfect. And I would never be angry at you, or disappointed in you, or resentful toward you, for being who you are. I promise. Alright?”

Kara shudders and smiles and reaches for the last of the potstickers.

Alex chuckles and Maggie laughs and Kara chews with a bashful smile.

“Will you help me break up with him? I still care about him, as a person – ”

“We both will, Kara. Whatever you need.”

“You got it, Little Danvers.”

“And then… then maybe you can help me talk to Lena?”

Alex groans with a smile and Maggie laughs and puts both hands on Kara’s thighs as she stands up to slip onto her girlfriend’s mock-traumatized lap.

“Of course we will, Little Danvers. Of course we will.”
