When I was in school (elementary and secondary) we never got taught anything about the bad side of Canadian history. It was always how we had the underground railroad and we were equity angels compared to Americans. 1/?
And so now I’m in university and I’m only just now hearing about all this segregation history. I didn’t know we had slaves in Canada, because it was never taught to me or my peers. I didnt know about segregation, or the KKK. 2/?
I think this speaks to the fact that we dont update our textbooks on the nitty gritty Canadian history that has the bad and the good. I really hope in the future that this is reformed and kids know the past well enough to avoid making their mistakes.
