Bruce’s hands nervously twitched and his intertwined fingers moved relentlessly, fighting the urge to remove and replace his glasses again as he had done at least ten times already.  He had been staring out the window for several minutes with no sound other than the quiet rhythm of his breathing, now calm again after the last round of questions asked had him feeling particularly emotional.

ok, i figured it was about time i made an actual psa on this, since this gif keeps going around unsourced and attached to incorrect info, and it’s getting me a little, ahem, exothermic.

it’s p-nitro aniline, and you can find the original video here. this is raw footage - not sped up at all! it’s well worth a watch just for the soundtrack too, in my opinion. really riles one up ready for an evening of mad science.

table sugar (sucrose) mixed with sulphuric acid does produce a very similar reaction. however, it’s far less violent, taking about a minute to kick off and quite a while to produce a ‘carbon snake’ of a decent length. you can see the procedure and reaction at normal speed here, or check out this (significantly sped up) gif of it:
