I was talking with two of my committee members

And one of them told me about a big government grant that the Forest County Potawatomis had gotten for language preservation and I was reading the proposal and there are about a dozen elders left amongst any of the bands who are first language fluent and it breaks my heart every time I think about it.

I knew the numbers were low but that low? Our tribe has lost so much.

I am learning our language, and it soothes the heartbreak I feel, but even if I learn it, who will I speak to?

Dear white people,

When you’re getting butthurt and defensive about getting called out for disrespecting the war bonnet or other American Indian traditions and imagery

Remember that I am mad because you have so thoroughly decimated my people and eradicated our culture that it is on the brink of disappearance.

How would you feel if you woke up one day and you were the last person who spoke English or whatever? That is a literal possibility for me. One day, when I am old, my passing could mark the end of Potawatomi fluency (assuming I attain fluency).
