plus there was some inspiration with elements of Anna Karenina but who’s counting
Kaz is a high standing count on the brink of obtaining a massive fortune and many a young woman in the gentry is poised to attain it with charm and seduction and brevity
He ignores most of them because he’s literally Mr. Darcy level taciturn when it comes to socializing
but people in his family (aka the Dregs) keep insisting that he needs to take up a suitable partner to have an heir to his empire of information and secrecy
meanwhile Inej is a noblewoman of the lowest rank who’s dragged along with multiple debutantes to a ball
her parents were fiercely against this, but Duchess Van Houden wasn’t the kind of woman you’d turn down and not expect a strike in the back
so Inej goes and is absolutely tormented by the highest ranking girl - Princess Dunyasha Lazarova - in every single hour of etiquette lessons
but Inej does enjoy the dancing lessons
unless Dunyasha happens to be her partner and the princess intentionally stomps on Inej’s feet with her white heels
so all of the girls are whispering who they’d set eyes on for their future husbands while Inej is just trying to untie some of the ribbons on her day dress because she can’t breathe
One girl whispers, “I hear Count Brekker will be there for a brief time.”
the girls all shiver and whisper strange stories about the count with heaping mounds of kruge and his dark gloves
but at the same time admire his piercing gaze and aloof attitude
“Well,” Inej cuts in. “If he’s who you say he is, the Princess will most certainly set her eyes for him.”
this sobers the girls up pretty quick and no more talk of the Count ensues
the night of the ball arrives and the girls are quickly loaded into carriages and set off to the Van Eck mansion, graciously lent by Baron Wylan Van Eck (Jan Van Eck can go choke)
the page announces the ladies’ names and titles one by one while Kaz, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, and Matthias see the girls enter the ballroom and curtsey to the top box where they’re seated
Kaz’s eyebrows rise when he sees the first girl with white hair and white everything, from the diamond diadem nestled in her head to the organza train trailing down her gown, who holds her head up with a terrible air of grace and beauty
when Dunyasha rises from her curtsey, a small smirk curves her lips upward, because she’s seen his expression and knows she’s piqued his interest
Jesper and Wylan are arguing over why Wylan let the Duchess sweep in with her girls in the first place because “those girls are trapped, Wy. You’re only tormenting them by allowing this and dangling the hope of a happily ever after in front of them.”
“This is one of their only chances of enjoying themselves, Jesper. The Duchess doesn’t let any of them out of her sight afterwards.”
Nina and Matthias are commenting on how miserable the girl who just entered - all dressed in black - looks
Nina makes a noise of sympathy, which catches Kaz’s attention
she nods toward the girl who’s drifting across the room, staying close to the walls and pillars so no one would dance with her
“Poor thing. At any rate, Wylan, I do believe there’s at least one girl that won’t be enjoying herself tonight.”
Katz’s gaze settles on the new girl who has no winning smile on her face, no ornaments in her hair
in fact, if she wasn’t wearing a glittering golden necklace, Kaz would have suspected she just came from a funeral
he sips at his flute of champagne and watches this anomaly of a debutante carefully
and it’s only been a few seconds before she swivels her head around to catch Kaz staring openly at her
This Wednesday we’re celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women on International Women’s Day. I’d like to use that as an opportunity to talk about a few of my favorite female characters in Young Adult books. Careful if you haven’t read these books because of possible spoilers.
Cather Avery (Fangirl)
Cather Avery and her twin sister Wren are starting college and Wren has announced she wants to discover college on her own, leaving an introvert Cath hiding out in her dorm, writing fan fiction. I really liked that Fangirl was about Cath as a character at first and everything else second. Cath is shy and introvert but she’s also sure of who she is and isn’t ashamed of that.
Madeline Whittier (Everything Everything)
Madeline has a rare illness which prevents her from leaving her house, but Maddy is a happy teenage girl. She reads a lot, takes classes online, has a friend in the form of her nurse. Despite the fact that she was missing out on so much in her life, she keeps being optimistic. It is impossible not to like her. Of course, she was also moody and curious. This curiosity eventually leads her to uncover a secret that will change everything for her.
Glory O’Brien (Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future)
One evening Glory and her best friend mix up beer with the remains of a bat (that is as weird as it sounds). Next thing they know they can see people’s pasts and futures. Glory becomes obsessed with the second civil war and decided to write down every piece of information she gathers from seeing people’s futures. I loved how Glory handled seeing the future. She questioned everything in her past and present; her future, the strange hippie community across the street and especially her mother’s suicide and what I means for her.
Rose Hathaway (Vampire Academy-series)
Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir and thus fated to guard a Moroi. She’s determined to protect her best friend Lissa, a royal Moroi. Rose is sarcastic and insubordinate but she is fiercely loyal to Lissa. Over the course of the series Rose loves and loses Dimitri. The loss of him puts her friendship with Lissa and even her life at stake.
Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer trilogy and upcoming Shaw Confessions)
She has to power to kill people with a thought, but is she a villain? Throughout this trilogy, Mara tries to figure out what is happening with her. She means no harm, but around her people start dying under strange circumstances. She tries to understand her powers and is put in dangerous situations because of it. To get herself out of these situations she must use her power and questions who she is when she does.
Gwendolyn Shepard (Ruby Red)
Kerstin Gier gives us curious and funny heroines. These characteristics often put them in complicated situations. Take Gwendolyn, (Gwyneth in the US/UK editions) for example. She can travel through time but it isn’t nearly as fun as it sounds. She always taught her cousin would inherit the time travel gene, she isn’t ready to fulfill tasks that would take her across time. Yet, Gwendolyn uncovers the truth and stands her ground while taking on an ancient organization.
Shahrzad Al-Khayzuran (The Wrath and the Dawn)
She marries the Caliph, not to love him and be his bride, but to kill him. Khalid has had countless wives and has killed every one of them, including her best friend. But when Shahrzad finds out her husband is cursed she takes it upon herself to save him and their people. Shahrzad can come across as spoiled, but she also doesn’t take shit from anyone and doesn’t like to be told what to do.
Inej Ghafa & Nina Zenik (Six Of Crows)
Inej can climb the most impossible buildings. She grew up with loving parents but was separated from them and sold to a brothel. Her time there still causes her anxiety. Nina was a member of the second army in the Ravkan war. She’s a heartrender. Nina loves her power, she loves food and she loves Matthias, who is supposed to be her enemy, and she knows he loves her too. Nina is determined to show him Grisha aren’t evil like he has been told, to not only accept her but her kind as well. Inej and Nina are just as much a part of The Dregs as the boys and just as important for their mission.
Kestrel Trajan (The Winner’s trilogy)
As the general’s daughter Kestrel knows politics very well. She has always had a privileged life. When Valorians and Herrani’s go to war, Kestrel is put in a difficult position. Her people are in the wrong, but they are her people. Arin isn’t one of them. He’s her slave, the boy she’s in love with. She has to help his people. Kestrel is often put before terrible options but they are her only options and what do you choose when the outcome is bound to be horrible either way?
Verity (Code name Verity)
“Kiss me, Hardy. Kiss me, quick!” Well, if this book didn’t destroy me. Verity is captured by Nazi’s and tortured until she agrees to write down everything she knows - everything. The first half of the book is her confession, the second half is told from her best friend’s POV. Maddie and Verity are major friendship goals. Their story was so inspiring and completely heartbreaking at the same time.
Bianca (The DUFF)
The Designated Ugly Fat Friend is what Robbie calls Bianca, explaining that it isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a fact. Bianca tries to not let this bother her, but it does. She is the DUFF. Despite the fact that he hates Robbie the two of them start a friends-with-benefits relation, except for the “friends” part because they hate each other. The book discusses many others topics, such as friendship, neglect, alcoholism and divorce. Bianca uses the words ‘slut’ and ‘whore’ a lot throughout the book. In the end, she comes to a nice conclusion about these labels and ultimately it’s a good message. I would also recommend Kody’s other YA novels.
Linh Cinder (Cinder)
So far I’ve only read the first book in the Lunar Chronicles series, but it was enough to see that Cinder is bad-ass. She’s funny and sassy and the best mechanic in New Beijing. Instead of going to the Prince’ ball she’d rather use that opportunity to elope from her evil guardian. Things don’t go as planned when it’s discovered that Cinder is a Lunar, that she has powers, and that if the Lunar queen finds out, she will take Cinder to Luna and most likely kill her.
I really like the illogical/unconscious things that
Azazel did for Nina
I mean their first meeting. All he knew that she is a
weird girl that called him her trophy. Then he caught her in the air thinking that
she is Mugaro. What then? The knights pursue you, you don’t need any handicaps,
and the situation is already bad. What did Azazel? Being surprised, he dropped
Nina, but then without hesitations caught her again.
Why? He didn’t know
anything about dragon stuff. He didn’t have any idea how to use this girl. On
the contrary, he could leave her fall to confuse the knights.
Azazel and Nina were attacked by the knight’s dragons.
The flame was pretty near. What Azazel did? He pressed Nina’s head against
his chest to protect her from fire.
To protect just a random girl. And pretty sure,
he did it automatically without any thoughts.
Then a new episode. Such a big progress! Azazel was
ready to die and asked Nina to use her power for demon’s sake. Didn’t force her
to do it immediately and fight instead of him, nope, he said her to take Mugaro and go away. The rest will be her decision.
Then this cute fall! Azazel already protected Nina from fire, now he protected
her from the ground.
With all his terrible wounds, he didn’t let her to break
something. An unconscious help again.
What I try to say? Yeah, Azazel don’t understand for
now what is love. He is sure that he can easy control Nina’s feelings and
dragon transformation. He offers her an alliance that from Nina’s side sounds
like a confession. It’s clear Azazel wants to use her power.
However, he is ready
for the comprises he don’t force Nina to do something like he did before. He
offers his help to solve her love problem. Huh, a naive person. I think that
with the time Aza-nii will learn more about social skills and his bonds with
Nina will be important. In his eyes, she isn’t already just an instrument he is
grateful to her for saving his life. Remember he is a handsome tsundere demon
too, that’s why it’s not so easy for him to show his good sides. :D So I guess
we will have a lot of adorable moments with Azanina later~
Simon and Luna are stepbrothers and just arrived from Mexico to Argentina, they inmediatly friend Nina, but the power trio of the school gets really interested in this new squad.
A new country, a new school and a new life can be hard, and most for a teenager, but the things gets a little better when you have a stepbrother/bestfriend to help you to go throught all those changes, that is the case of Luna Valente and Simon Alvarez.
They are both from Mexico, her mother and his dad got married when she was 7 and he was 8, and since then they have been inseparable, and now that his dad got and increible job offer in Argentina they had to move there to finish school.
-It is one of the best schools in the continent, coming out from there would garantize you an entrance to a good university -Her mother was rambling while they were eating their breakfast
-Yes mom, you have told us that, like a hundred times since we knew we were coming -Luna told her amused by her mother worry
-I know, it’s just -Monica sighed- I just… don’t want you to feel bad about all these changes -She looked really worried
-Hey, Monica, don’t, we are going to be fine -Simón said giving her a reconforting smile
-Simon is right mom, as long as we stay together everythng will be fine -She said smiling widely and Monica couldn’t help but go to hug her children, other children would be complaining about how they had to let their friends, their teachers, Simon’s band, but they accepted the fact of moving out almost inmediatly even with a little excitement.
-Are you doing a group hug without me? -Miguel said leading into the kitchen to join their hug.
-Okay, I love our love, but Luna and I are going late to the first day of school -Simon said causing that the hug break.
The school was definitely bigger that their last one in Mexico, way too big for Luna’s taste.
-Did you bring the map dad gave us? -Simon asked to Luna who was seeing the building shocked
-Yes I did, I am sure I am going to need it -She said with open mouth
-I can walk you there -Simon offered himself
-No, I can go by myself, you need to go and look for your classroom too, won’t be any help if we both are late -Luna denied looking at the paper where she had her schedule
-You sure? -He asked looking her worried, he knew how good Luna was at getting lost
-Yeah, yeah, we’ll see us at the door in the break -She said without even looking at him and started to walk without taking her eyes out of the map her stepdad gave her, she was determinated to find her classroom by herself and she was sure she was going on the right way then suddenly she felt how she bumpet into something, better said someone, and she felt a pair of arms holding her avoiding that she fell into the ground.
-Wow, there are other ways to have my attention that trying to tackled me, you know? -The guy holding her said with a raspy boy that made her shriver, she stayed looking at his eyes, lost in them, she never thought that brown eyes could be that hypnotizing, but then she realized how close she was to him, a total strange.
-I…i am sorry. I was just trying to find my classroom -Luna said stuttering
-And where is this piccolina heading for? -He asked smiling taking the schedule she had in one of her hands -You need to go to the opposite side, turn left and the third room it is -He said confident handing her schedule again
-Th..thanks -She said still nervous -Ho…how did you called me? Piccolo?
-That is from an anime I think -Ha said laughing while scratching his head with a finger -I called you piccolina, fits you, I am Matteo by the way -He said leaning to kiss her cheek but she inmediatly pushed his face with one hand amused
-And what does that piccolina thing means? -She asked smiling while he stood up straight again smirking at her rejection
-You are going to have to find it out by yourself, piccolina -He said approaching teasingly -Are you going to tell me your name? -Then the bell rang telling them that it was time to go to their classes
-You are going to have to find it out by yourself, snob -She said winking an eye at him and walking at the direction he indicated her minutes before
She made it just seconds before the teacher walked in, she roammed the whole room with her eyes and sat in the closest chair that was empty, next to a girl with big glasses that was lost in her book.
Simón arrived to the classroom he had assigned and went to the only table that was completely empty, the other empty sit was next to a guy but he prefer to have a sit on his own that day, a couple of minutes after a blonde girl stood in front of him.
-That is my sit -Was the only thing the blonde one said
-Then sit -Simon said without a blink pointing at the chair next to him, she opened her eyes like if someone has said the worst thing to her
-You don’t get it, I sit alone, you can’t sit with me -She stated all serious, and that made Simon let a loud laugh out
-Are you being serious? Is this a teen movie and you are the mean girl or is this just a joke? -Simon said laughing still
-This is not a joke at all and I want my sit -She said getting to loud, at this point every body in the classroom was looking at them
-Ambar that is the only sit left, you know this is Matteo ‘s, so why don’t you calm and just sit -The guy that was sitting next to them with the other empty chair said to the girl
-That is not my problem Gastón, I need to sit -Ambar said mad at the guy and he just put his hands up in sign of surrender
-Then sit down right there miss Smith -The teacher that was just entering the classroom said forcing Ambar to sit next to Simón, she was frowning very mad but Simón instead was looking at her with the biggest smile amused of the whole situation, how is possible that after all she said he was still smiling, Ambar was sure she was going to hate that guy, but Simon was sure he would never let anyone to ruin his mood -Are you a new student? -The teacher asked to Simon
-Yes, I am Simón Alvarez -He said smiling big, why does he smile so bright? Ambar asked to herself, it was driving her crazy
-And new in the country as I can see for your accent -The teacher asked back and Simón just nodded in answer
-Well, welcome to the school as in out country, hope Miss Smith did a proper warm welcome to you -Te teacher pointed out sarcastic and Ambar just faked a smile to her
-She did a splendid job -He said teasing her, but then a guy rushed in the door dragging all the attention to him
-Mister Balsano, you are late -The teacher stated crossing her arms around her chest
-I am sorry, but I found a new girl that needed help finding her classroom and I just couldn’t let her get lost on her first day, I had to help her, it’s my nature, help the need -The guy said smirking standing on the door looking at the teacher
-Yes Mister Balsano, always so nice of you helping girls, just sit down, I am about to start the class -The teacher said and the guy just rushed sitting next to Gaston, the guy who just tried to help Simón from Ambar.
His last year in school seemed interesting, at least, Simon thought.
Imagine Erik Finding Out That You, His Young Daughter, Have Inherited His Powers
“Slow down, Erik, what are you on about?” Charles frowned through the phone.
“Y/N has- she’s- she’s like me, Charles!” Erik sputtered. He had you in one arm, and you were squirming in an attempt to ‘do the magic’ again. You had always been very enchanted by your father when he did little magic tricks with his metallokinesis to entertain you, and you were only concerned with your joy of possessing ‘the magic’ as well.
“NO, Y/N, no, no no, we do not do that with those!” Erik said quickly, moving the silverware you had begun to float out of your sight. He pulled the phone back over to his ear to hear what Charles had to say about it. It didn’t quite matter if he had moved the dangerous utensils; you had found something else to play with.
“Just bring her to the mansion, I’ll run a few simple tests I do with the students, she’ll be fine, Erik.”
“Alright, alright, I’ll bring her up in the morning,” Erik sighed. He hung up the phone with a breath of relief, only to look down at you.
“Papa, look!” you giggled; his old, worn Magneto helmet rested loosely over your head. Memories around that helmet flooded his mind, both good and bad. He had tried to hurt in that headpiece. He had tried to kill, and he had wanted to keep that part of his past far away from you.
However, looking down at the innocence in your eyes, he felt a spark of hope. Maybe, where he had become a symbol of hate, you could be one of hope.
