nights-oath

sapphic relationship aesthetics
  • luna/ginny: running through a field of flowers, kissing under the moonlight, flying through the wind on a sunny day, odd looks, wearing beautiful dresses at a ball, cloud watching during the day and stargazing at night.
  • clarke/lexa: practicing combat together, holding each other on a balcony all night until sunrise, swearing oaths, a scribbled drawing of your loved one sleeping, feeling secure for the first time.
  • parvati/lavender: soft whispers in your ear, walking through a foreign city together, trying on new fashion trends, walking through the hallways like you own the place, doing each other's makeup at sleepovers.
  • narcissa/lily: braiding flowers into one another's hair, fiercely protecting what you're passionate about, walking through a forest together, going to an elegant party hand-in-hand.
  • harley/ivy: jumping out of moving cars, stopping at your home for only hours at a time (and watering the plants), seeking adventure, cuddling each other for hours on end, running through a wild storm, taking risks.
  • lena/kara: holding hands in a big city, finding excuses to go to each other's workplace, escaping paparazzi, flirting with each other in the middle of meetings, going to each other's homes to watch movies and eat food, supporting each other.
  • daphne/pansy: sitting at the edge of a cliff together, being completely independent from one another but secretly being so dependent, judging others together, giving each other sly smiles, unleashing hell on anybody who hurts the her.
  • alex/maggie: making each other coffee on sunday mornings, watching the sunrise together, working on cases together with ease, teasing each other, falling asleep on her chest, threatening anybody who might hurt her, wearing her shirt.
  • amberle/eretria: climbing to the top of the tallest tree in a forest, endlessly jabbing at each other, fleeting vulnerable moments, sacrifices, kissing with only candlelight.
  • hannah/susan: baking cookies together in a cozy house, going to the farmer's market together, wearing floral dresses and button-ups, braiding each other's hair, basking in the sunlight.
  • clary/izzy: encouraging each other to wear daring clothes, training together, undying support and devotion, walking through the hallways because you know you own the place, holding each other under silk sheets, sunlight streaming through stained glass windows.
  • angelina/alicia: doing pushups together, defending each other, kissing each other after a game won, swimming in a bright blue lake together and laughing, complimenting each other.

Aemon: The Nights Watch take an oath because Love is the death of duty. If the day should ever come that your Lord Father had to choose between honor on the one hand and those he loved on the other what would he do?

Jon: He would do whatever was right.

Aemon: Lord stark was one man in a thousand. Most of us wouldn’t have the strength. What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms?Yet there comes a time in every man’s life when it is not easy, a day when he must choose.“

They really gave so many hints for Dany and having kids this year. It was crazy. The parallels for Jon having kids are not so many but with Dany they went overboard.

Actually there are many parallels for Jon too. Aside him being a Targaryen and all that.

When he entered the Night’s Watch he gave an oath.

“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory.I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Jon’s oath ended when he died. But if you break it down you get the parallels that always hinted where his story would go.

“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death.

It ended.

Part of him will always be a Night Watcher and a protector or the realm.

I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.”

He has Longclaw. The Long Night came. The darkness falls. Winter is here. He is gathering everyone. He is ready to fight. He is the shield that guards the realms of men. The sword in the darkness.

However he has pledged his life and honor now to the world, to the North and to Daenerys Targaryen by bending the knee and proclaiming her his Queen.

“I shall hold no lands.”

He has Winterfell. He is the Lord of Winterfell.

 “I shall wear no crowns”

He is King in the North.

“and win no glory.

He won the Battle of the Bastards. He is known now to be one of the greatest swordsmen alive. A resurrected legend for the free folk and the Night’s Watch.

What is left?

“I shall take no wife”

His sex scene with Daenerys was while there was a flashback of his parents giving their marital oaths in the wedding. And he initiated what happened between him and Dany.

Plus Littlefinger speaking of a marriage alliance and all that.

…father no children.

A tiny little hidden town with a single, very knightly Oath of Devotion paladin who’s too old and tired to be off hunting evil now but who teaches anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves. His most dedicated student is a wild handful of a girl, just trying to burn off her excess energy but who seems oddly drawn to his decorum and inner balance as the opposite of everything she is. He might have taken her as his trainee, but she’s wild and indecorous and doesn’t seem willing to yoke her temperament or to present herself as an example to others. They bicker constantly, though she progresses rapidly in what he has to teach her.

Then something happens- the forgotten village is stumbled upon by a bandit army, or a greedy necromancer, or a mass of goblins, and it is overrun. Off goes the paladin to the source of the trouble, leaving his students behind to hold the town. When nothing is heard from him and she sees her friends and cousins falling around her, something changes. She’s heard his oath a thousand times, and it’s always been nonsense to her. It’s still nonsense, but all of a sudden she feels like there’s something hidden away in its heart that means something.

Carrying her unconscious cousin over her shoulders to the makeshift infirmary she quietly swears to the listening night an oath that takes that hidden something and makes it everything, an oath she thinks is her own but is actually sounding from the heart of her land, older than her town and his order and even the river flowing down past her fields. She’ll learn that someday when she finds out there are others like her, and that the spirit of wood and field, guardian of her people, to whom she made that promise was listening, and that there is so much left for her to learn.

And they win. And she goes and finds him, exhausted and broken from his efforts, and brings him home. And she never tells him but he guesses, and he teaches her, and they bicker like he’s her own grandfather and she’s never what he wanted in a student but when he goes she’s there and promises to look after his people for him.

"But wrt to Robb, there is legal precedent for his will. The Night’s Watch has released men from their vows in the past." When was this?

Ok already! Given the flood of anon asks, I’ll answer. So the evidence for this is as follows:

“Jon is a brother of the Night’s Watch, sworn to take no wife and hold no lands. Those who take the black serve for life.”
“So do the knights of the Kingsguard. That did not stop the Lannisters from stripping the white cloaks from Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Boros Blount when they had no more use for them. If I send the Watch a hundred men in Jon’s place, I’ll wager they find some way to release him from his vows…”

“Not unless he’s legitimized by a royal decree,” said Robb. “There is more precedent for that than for releasing a Sworn Brother from his oath.” (Cat V, ASOS)

Granny: Is there any chance that Jon could be released from his oaths of the nightwatch?

George_RR_Martin: The great council would have released Aemon from his maester’s oath, so I suppose it would be possible. With an appropriate authority. (Source)

Let’s break this down:

  •  Robb’s comment that “If I send the Watch a hundred men in Jon’s place, I’ll wager they find some way to release him from his vows” suggests to me that there is some process for the Watch to release someone from their vows in extraordinary circumstances.
  • Likewise, Robb’s comment that there is more precedent for legitimizing bastards than there is from releasing someone from their oath suggests to me that there is some, but very little, precedent for releasing someone from their vows.
  • GRRM’s response to the question about Jon, and keep in mind this question is being asked after ACOK came out but before ASOS came out, suggests to me that the “appropriate authority” can release Jon from his vows. Now, the authority in question could be many things: the Lord Commander, the Brothers voting as a whole, a king’s decree, etc.

Also, I remember GRRM talking about it on some HBO video, an Inside the Episode or History and Lore, where he said that it had happened but they don’t like doing it, but I couldn’t find what I was looking for.

The Oath of the Stage Manager’s Watch

The house is open, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until the last cast member has left the theatre. I shall take no breaks, answer no texts, check no Tumblr. I shall wear no color and receive no applause. I will live and caffeinate at my post. I am the glow-tape in the darkness. I am the watcher in the booth. I am the shield that guards the realm of actors. I pledge my life and honor to the theatre, for this show and for all shows of the run.

i am falling unawares for you and i know it’s trouble. i have never once broken any heart except my own and i promised it once i would keep it safe, whispered it softly to sleep as it beat as though it were about to forget how. that night i swore an oath, signed an agreement that feelings are too fragile to be worth it; that i am too fragile to be worth it. but my love remembers.

it remembers laugh lines and dark eyes and the curve of your back as you sat on the window seat, a vintage book clutched in your palms as your eyes skittered about the page as though you weren’t sure where the words ended and the world began. it remembers hating you for a while and then hating myself when it realised i was looking too long, seeing your sighs echoed everywhere, in song lyrics and film scenes that have nothing to do with you but everything to do with us. it remembers the brush of your fingertips on my cheek as you whisked away an eyelash that held my every last hope. it remembers feeling too much and the fear of never feeling anything again.

i know it’s trouble. i know you shouldn’t have eyes like that, shouldn’t laugh like that, shouldn’t look at me like that. you’ll hurt me. i know you will. but i’d give anything to remember not minding.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Premiere Event Guards the Realm of Men From Spoilers

It’s not every day that one is asked to swear an oath, but at the Season 7 premiere event for “Game of Thrones,” Jon Snow himself swore in numerous Westerosi fans into the Night’s Watch.

“Lords, ladies, wildings, bastards, and CAA agents,” the voice of Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, addressed the audience at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “We must swear our sacred oath: Night gathers, and now our watch begins. I shall take no photos, hold no phones, spread no rumors on social media. I am the shield that guards the realm of men from spoilers. I pledge my life and honor to tonight’s watch, for this night and all the nights to come… until Sunday.”

Naturally, Jon Snow couldn’t have the last word, and Rose Leslie, the voice of  Jon’s wilding lover Ygritte, capped off the announcement with, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.”

The clever spoiler warning preceded the night’s main event, a screening of the Season 7 premiere. But before the episode got underway, series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss had another treat in store.

Benioff explained that over six years ago, the first season of “Game of Thrones” had finished shooting, but they had yet to find a composer. Their music supervisor Evyen Klean had recommended Ramin Djawadi as the best in the business. Unfortunately, Djawadi was in such high demand that he was too busy for the HBO fantasy series and had to turn the offer down.

“We groveled and begged until he couldn’t take it any more and finally said yes,” explained co-creator Dan Weiss. “Now, the single-most recognizable part of the show may not be any character or creature or Kit Harington’s hair, but Ramin’s music. It’s impossible to overstate the importance of his score to this show. So here tonight at Disney Concert Hall, we all have the privilege of hearing one of the world’s greatest film composers and loveliest human beings conduct his own music. So without any further delay, we would like to introduce our friend, Ramin Djawadi and the ‘Game of Thrones’ orchestra.”

The orchestra played three numbers along to accompany “Game of Thrones” images on the screen. The numbers included the main titles theme song, “Light of the Seven” (which was heard over the stellar opening sequence in Season 6’s finale when Cersei sets the Sept of Baelor ablaze) and an additional number that included a choir.

It was an auditory treat that was the perfect appetizer for the main event, the Season 7 premiere screening itself. But since IndieWire took the sacred oath, we cannot reveal any spoilers about what we saw. Suffice it to say that men lived or died, dragons flew, and revenge was served cold.
