night visions on top of the world

A noise at the trapdoor above the basement makes Luna snap to attention. If it’s the Manor’s house elf, Shiny, he’ll have food (and Luna is so hungry. She’s almost as hungry as she is cold), but if it’s not… Luna shudders. She’s no stranger, after a term at Hogwarts under the Carrows, to the Crutiatus Curse, but that Bellatrix woman doesn’t care about spilling blood.

To be safe, Luna draws back under the blanket she’d found folded next to her upon waking once - she doesn’t know if it had been morning or not - beneath a sack of apples and pumpkin juice. As far as she can tell, the other inhabitants of the basement are asleep. Olivander spends much of his time asleep, and she can’t hear Griphook cursing in the dark. Dean she’s not sure about.

The door swings open, and the light makes Luna blink. At its top, though, isn’t Shiny….or Bellatrix. Instead, Draco Malfoy, dressed in robes that remind Luna of Ravenclaw (oh goodness, her common room) stands, peering down at them. It must be Easter break.

She can’t read his intentions.

Part 1: Parties

I looked across the lush grounds of Prythian University, my cotton robe tucked tightly around the curves of my figure, and I sighed at the wonderfully gorgeous campus that swept across my view. Students walked along, talking together, backpacks strung over their shoulders and heavy books bound to their arms. Autumn kissed the trees that dotted the grounds, leaves collecting within the tracks of students’ footprints. The fall air caressed my skin blissfully and I closed my eyes.

It had been 6 months since I’d moved into Spring House. The six happiest months of my existence, probably.

On this day in music history: May 11, 1985 - “Crazy For You” by Madonna hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week, peaking at #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart on the same date, and #80 on the R&B singles chart on May 4, 1985. Written by John Bettis and Jon Lind, it is the second chart topping single for the pop music superstar from Rochester, MI. Songwriters Bettis (“Top Of The World, "Goodbye To Love”) and Lind (“Boogie Wonderland”, “Save The Best For Last”) are asked by Warner Bros film music executive Joel Sill if they write a song for a film being produced by Jon Peters and Peter Guber (“Batman”, “The Color Purple”) titled “Vision Quest” in early 1984. Producer Phil Ramone acts as the music supervisor for the film, and is responsible compiling the soundtrack album. Ramone hears “Crazy For You” and loves it immediately, knowing exactly who he wants to record the song. At the time, Madonna’s career is just beginning to take flight as her third single “Borderline” is climbing the charts. Known at the time only for her uptempo dance material, the songwriters are unsure of Madonna’s ability to sing a ballad. The track is produced by Madonna’s then boyfriend, club DJ and remixer John “Jellybean” Benitez. When Bettis and Lind attend the initial recording session for the song, they are disappointed at the outcome. Benitez brings in keyboardist and studio musician Rob Mounsey to write a new arrangement and they re-record the song. Everyone is pleased with the new version and it is included on the “Vision Quest” soundtrack album. Madonna also has a small role in the film as a night club singer, performing “Crazy For You” and “Gambler”. Released in February of 1985, as her second album “Like A Virgin” is riding high in the charts, the ballad is another major smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #55 on March 2, 1985, it climb to the top of the chart ten weeks later, unseating USA For Africa’s “We Are The World” from the top spot, after holding at number two for three weeks behind it. “Crazy” not only is Madonna’s second number one single in less than six months, it also helps broaden her audience and show another side of her musically that had not been previously seen. The single also earns Madonna a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in 1986. “Crazy For You” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.

Evan Hansen in Deadland AU

Jared got in good car as he took off his work hat annoyed.

“Where’s the Ketchup? Over there mam. I said mustard not ketchup. God why does everyone have to be so stupid?” Picking up his phone he was surprised to see several messages left by Evan. After everything he said to Jared why would he be calling him in the middle of the night? Clicking on the latest message he was greeted be Evan’s nervous voice.

“Hey, it’s Evan. Listen we need talk about the past few days, the whole Connor Project. I need to say I’m sorry. Can we talk at our tree in the orchard? I really wish you picked up.” The call abruptly ended leaving Jared even more confused. Why did Evan want to talk to him all of a sudden?

Evan climbed the familiar branches once again as tears ran down his face. He couldn’t do it, he couldn’t face the shame. What was he even thinking? Lying about Connor to the world, he should of known it would end horribly. He didn’t want to have to see his mom’s crying face again, the Murphys disappointed faces, Jared…he’s not surprised Jared didn’t come. Why would he? After what he said he couldn’t blame him.

His hand found the top branch as he managed to situate himself on the tree. Looking out at the night sky through his blurry vision he smiled. This time he couldn’t possibly mess up, hopefully they’d never find his body. He didn’t want his mom to have to see that. With that he let go of the branch and started to fall.

“Evan?” Jared looked around the orchard for his former friend. “I swear to God of you’re messing with me I will kill you.” That’s when his phone rang and he saw Alana’s face on screen. “Yello?”

“Jared have you seen Evan?”

“No, why?”

“His mom just called me-”

“Why’d she call you?”

“Not important, you need to find Evan.”

“Why are you panicking?”

“He left a note Jared.”

“So? He leaves a lot of notes.”

“Jared, it was a suicide note.”

“Wait, what?!”

Evan opened his eyes having not hit the ground and was instead greeted by darkness as he fell further.

‘This it’s hell isn’t it? I’m just going to keep falling forever…’ As if hearing him a voice called out into the abyss.

“Welcome to Deadland.”

“What?” That’s when he hit the ground, yet again arm first. Cringing from the expected pain he was surprised to not feel anything at all. Looking up he saw he was in a line of people slowly moving forward.

“W-where am I?” The man in front of him threw an annoyed look on Evan’s direction.

“Didn’t you hear the voice kid? You’re dead.”

'Oh,’ Evan thought looking around him, 'so this is what being dead feels like. It’s a lot less painful than I thought it be.’

Someone: are you okay?

What I say: yes
